The Dog and Gun Inn in West Lancashire

We were a family group of eight adults and were seated in a comfortable area, with excellent service from Lisa. We ordered food, which was delivered freshly cooked and piping hot, with a delicious variety of vegatables, accompanying my gammon dish. Worth every penny.

Met up with family for lunch, the food was delicious, piping hot, I opted for salmon with chive mash, cream sauce and leeks, it was gorgeous and a perfect portion size. My mum had gammon & said it was the nicest she’s ever tasted & my hubby went for trio of sausages, could not fault anything. In addition to gorgeous food the staff are lovely & attentive & nothing is too much trouble. Lovely warm atmosphere. We will be returning soon.

We saw a board on the road into Ormskirk advertising the Dog and Gun Inn. The board is overgrown with foliage. However we found the Dog and Gun and tried it out. What a wonderful find. It was quiet when we first arrived but within hour an hour it was buzzing. We had the most fantastic food, three for two starters. We had 5 star service. Dishes we had were Pulled pork in cider, Nachos with fabulous cheese and pork, Autumnal vegetable soup with lovely bread, Lasagne with fresh salad and garlic bread and Minced beef pie with chips and peas. It was a great experience. People we didn't know chatted freely to us. The atmosphere was lovely. We loved it

First time here what a gem hubby and I had lite bites just enough for us very tasty, would certainly recommend this and we will be coming here again.

Food is a little above average but not worth the price. Starter very nice but had to ask for more bread (they acknowledged this is a common ccomplaint). Fish and chips was OK but fish dry and not that much of it. My local chippy does it better. Roast dinners decent but again portion sizes small and inconsistent. One of us had the full size and another had the lite bite but the only difference was two potatoes (£4 difference on menu) and the lite bite actually had more meat. Total for one sharer starter, three mains and 5 drinks = £71. Could eat the miller and carter for this. Service quite slow too. On a positive note, they serve cask ale which was excellent.

We ate here tonight to celebrate my birthday, along with our wonderful family. It was our first ever visit as my daughter and her boyfriend have just moved to the area. I must say everything was absolutely spot on, from the service to every single morsel of food. Well done to one and all, we will be back again very very soon.

Took my elderly mother, excellent food, lovely decor, and great staff. Monday night yet quite busy, very dog friendly, locals very friendly too. Will definitely be back

OH no what went wrong, roast dinner awful, cauliflower cheese a disaster...didn't complain because the staff were so lovely. Get a grip in the kitchen. We like the pub a lot...but recently not so grea. tSorry

Really enjoyed the meal. Service was a bit slow from entering the pub to eating it was about an hour. Food was well cooked and hot. Four of us were there for Sunday lunch and all ordered the lamb. It was £16.00 and I thought they could have been more generous with the lamb. All in all positive feedback.

We go here fairly regularly and it is a decent pub. Drinks always good staff always helpful and food OK if a tad overpriced. It is essentially basic pub grub that's prepared by nice but very young kitchen staff. Kids meals are about £8 which is a lot for basic fish fingers and chips. Adult meals are pricey too at about £16 for an underwhelming fish and chips (worth more like £10). Wouldn't go out of my way to visit but OK as a local option

Have visited the Dog several times during our holiday in this area and never been disappointed. Staff always extremely helpful, polite and efficient. Had a really nice meal there last week and the ambiance is just what you would like in such a venue. Will keep visiting while we are in the area.

Very impressed with the takeaway meal we ordered for lockdown Valentines' Day, one of the best Valentine's meals that we've had, including pre-lockdown meals. (We both had the featherblade steak for the main course). Even came with a complementary rose for Mrs K.Well done Dog and Gun!

Just had a takeaway roast dinner for 4 and the food was excellent. The veg was cooked perfectly and to think it had travelled ten minutes to us, so impressed. Kids meals x 2 which the kids loved and they are super fussy. Lots of food, cooked perfectly, super tasty and delivered to the door.Great value for money and Super friendly staff to top it all off! Couldn’t recommend this excellent service enough. A must

Lovely little pub, food is great quality and the staff are very friendly. Definitely recommend popping in for a bowl of scouse and a pint after walking the dog! They are so welcoming to pets too - there are water bowls and treats freely available on the bar, as well as a watering station outside for the summer months. Will definitely be going back when we can!

Had a flier a couple of days ago and ordered Sunday lunch roast beef and all trimmings. I collected it as I only live a couple of minutes away. Well served up in a box with gravy and a pint well done will definitely use again and recommend you try.

Just finished our takeaway Sunday lunch from here, we’ve tried a couple of places before but this was by far the best we’ve had. Couldn’t recommend it more

Went for a meal on Friday evening with my other half. I had the sea bass and it was Amazing.. couldn't fault it.....looked great and tasted even better. Well done to Tom who was exemplary with his service...and didn't stop all night. Also thanks to young Anna, it was a lovely evening.. in what are difficult times for us all. We went for tea last night and food was excellent. It’s a comfortable cosy but safe environment and the staff are friendly and efficient. Recommended for a bit of light relief in this difficult times.

Can't believe how well the Dog and Gun have coped during the coronavirus crisis. We were so worried we might lose our little gem of a local but they have worked so hard to keep it going. The quality of the food and drink is so good and such good value, and the staff are so friendly and helpful. Can't praise everyone too much. Just shows what you can achieve with imagination and the right attitude. Well done and big thanks to you all !

We visit the Dog and Gun at least once a week . Lovely atmosphere always receive a warm welcome from the friendly staff . Have had lots of meals and have never been disappointed also used them for takeaways during lock down food always arrived on time and piping hot .So lucky to have this lovely pub as our local

I had several deliveries during Lockdown, all very welcome and piping hot. I have since visited the pub, during walks, and enjoyed a very tasty Sunday roast and , on another occasion, the fish and chips. I was looked after by efficient and friendly waiters. Will return.

Lovely little pub. Food excellent. Very tasty and hot. Wine excellent and the young man who served us was lovely. We have been several times and it hasn’t disappointed. Sunday lunch was piping hot and full of flavour and the choice of two sizes was great. Would have liked the roast potatoes to be a little more crispy but otherwise it was perfect. Will be going again.

We decided last minute not to cook and to have a Sunday roast out. The Dog and Gun were able to fit us in, thankfully - and COVID regulations were met whilst we were there, paper menus given out that you filled in yourself and gave into the bar.I was delighted that there was a light bite Sunday roast on offer as well as a full size!! I had a light bite roast (which was plenty), my husband and daughter had full size and my son had a chicken burger. All meals were amazing, well presented and tasty!! There is also a takeaway service - check out their Facebook page for details.All in all, the menu has plenty of choice for all tastebuds, the staff are attentive and professional, and the venue is a delight. Bit of a mixed bag here tonight, party of 8, 50% ok, 50% below par. Steaks, very poor, beef burger tough; steak pie tasteless; fish, halloumi burgers, fine. Room for improvement.

We went here last week (on a Tuesday- eat out to help out). What a lovely place it is- the staff were friendly (and wearing ppe!), food was delicious and was served in a timely manner. Plenty of distance between tables, hand sanitiser, diner contact details taken etc. Will definitely be returning, not just because the food was lively but we all felt safe and secure there. Lastly I have to say the prawns pil pil in particular was top restaurant standard!

We stopped here for a couple of pints when out on the bikes. There is outdoor seating and they have fresh water for dogs a good pit stop when out cycling or walking

First visit to this lovely traditional country pub. Good menu to meet all tastes at competaive prices. Good range of beers andwine with a warm welocme and good serive. We will defenatly call in again when we are next in the area.

We spent valentines evening here after spotting the offer of 2 x 3 course meals and glass of prosecco for £50.00. We wouldn't normally go out for valentines, but its on our doorstop so we thought we'd give it a go. Cosy, warm welcoming pub, really busy which is always good to see. We had halloumi and a pate to start, a tomahawk steak to share and a knickerbocker glory and cheesecake to finish. It was all delicious - exceeded our expectations for a set menu, really good! Staff were lovely, tables set out with roses and petals and love hearts - they'd really gone to some effort. We had a lovely evening and the steak was fantastic, melt in the mouth! We will be back! Only improvement I could make would be a little more choice on the wine list - maybe not just new world wines - but I'm nitpicking now!! Thank you for a lovely evening.

On a busy and noisy Saturday night over Christmas we sat down as a family group for a meal. This small country pub has been transformed into a busy eatery, with large screens in every room. On the night in question they displayed a revolving slideshow of dishes and recent live performers, though on quieter nights no doubt sport would be featured. There is nowhere to hide from these other than outside, where the inevitable smokers add to the 'atmosphere'. Years ago local farmers met in this quiet beer-friendly pub; now the tattooed classes hold sway.Of the half-dozen or so meals we had - all different - there were no complaints. It's the sort of food found almost everywhere in similar pubs, mirroring menus provided any of the big catering companies, and inevitably footnoted with legalese caveats about what may be present in foods (almost everything, it seems). They state that meat is supplied by a well thought of local butcher, which is welcome. One of our party ordered 'King Prawn Linguine' which arrived, not with linguine, but basic spaghetti and lashings of chopped tomatoes rather than the 'cherry tomatoes' promised. Nonetheless it was tasty. Vegans get short shrift here, and if you are vegetarian there are currently three choices: mushroom on toast, halloumi (starter AND main!) or go elsewhere.

5 of us came to dine here for an early new years eve family meal. Wasn't too busy and the food came out quickly. My mums main meal was sent back as she couldn't eat it but the staff were very prompt in returning it to the kitchen and replacing it. It was offered to either refund or for a new meal.

I think this is now my fourth visit to the dog and gun since it re opened after renovations.i mentioned in my last post how cold it was! Yet here we are on December 23 with no heating on again! A member of staff stated it was an issue with a radiator we were sat next to, however I touched another 2 radiators which were stone cold to touch and once again log burners not alight ( although this may of still not be remedied since my last visit) I find it disgraceful that I’m expected to pay for my drinks and dinner and have to consume with my coat on! I noticed at least 3 other patrons with their coats on! So it would seem it isn’t just me! I would like an explanation please and would like you to consider how you can improve my customer experience which I have now given you several chances to improve. Not much festive spirit it would seem here! I await your reply with anticipation. Many thanks jayne

This is my 3rd visit since the pub has new management and whilst lovely inside once again no heating on resulting in myself and other customers having to wear our coats ! Not and enticing advertisement ! I checked the radiators which were stone cold to touch and 2 log burners in situ but not lit!

Very dog friendly pub. Had a meal Tuesday 2 courses for £10. Food was very nice and plenty of it. We had carrot and coriander soup which was served in a warmed bowl on a platter with freshly baked bread. Lovely. Mains were cottage pie, chips, green beans and broccoli and my partner had fish and chips. Both fabulous. Dining plates and food were served hot and the food was freshly made. The staff were excellent in their service and very friendly and welcoming. Dog and Gun host a variety of pub events - live music, quiz night/play your cards right but as yet we have not sampled these events but have heard they are dry good.

Went here on Tuesday evening, we had a really nice meal, and then joined in quiz night with a couple of ladies that we had been chatting to. The staff were a delight, charming and courteous, they were all young and couldn't do enough for you. Food was fresh and really generous portions. Have been for lunch a couple of months ago and had an equally pleasant experience, would highly recommend. Will definetely be going again.

Great food and lovely staff. Dog friendly too. My only constructive criticism would be- it would have been so much nicer if veg were served on a separate dish. Found it quite over facing to be heaped onto the plate!!

We went to the dog and gun for the Tuesday 2 courses for £10. The meal was lovely, very good sizes and the staff were so kind and helpful, the children's meal was lovely and fresh and my daughter really enjoyed it. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and is very welcoming. We will definately go back and would recommend to family and friends.

4th visit here .Amazing . My husband says have the fish risotto. I say have anything, you won’t be disappointed.

Having not been to the dog and gun for a couple of years I am very impressed with the transformation of the premises. Whilst it was always a nice friendly pub the new owners have transformed the building itself and provide a very reasonable and interesting menu. Will be back soon

This place has transformed from being awful to being a really nice place to spend time. The staff appeared to be new and still finding their way around the menus and process. It was good and might be great next time we visit but right now I think it’s a work in progress for the team there.

We have been twice and everyone had a fantastic meal and the service is great. My wife and had the sea bass risotto and if you're a fish lover then give that a try - its brilliant. They serve real ale and it's a friendly place. Will definitely be our new local from now on.

Visited here 21st September with 13 family members including two small babies. We had an amazing night, could not fault anything. Service was great, food amazing we were all served at the same time. Made to feel very welcome, nothing was too much trouble, the staff are so nice. Well done to all concerned we will definitely be back

We all opted for a main dish, I had the sea bass which was delightful and my friend opted for the pie of the week which was steak and ale which went down very well. The ale was perfect as well, always nice to wash down good food with a nice beverage

Went in last night for a quick drink on our way home, we had been in a couple of times before since it was taken over by Marston's.Ordered the same round as the last times pint of Hobgoblin and a large sauvignon blanc.the girl serving seemed to be a little confused with the till menu and asked me for £9.90,I queried the price saying last time I paid £7 something, she then tried again and came up with £8.40 I just paid.still not sure whether or not it was right or not,not sure I'll bother going back,not the price just the lack of explanation.

A cracker of a place! Great food, nice wines, good ale on draught and bottled. Good music (not too loud!) Great value. I can't fault it!

We are new to the area and found this place today, staff mega friendly, pub lovely and clean - menu has a good variety - food was fabulous - large portions and a credit to the chef, Would definitely recommend and will definitely be returning.

Greeted and made welcome and seated at a clean table. Good choice on menu order taken promptly. Meal served piping hot without delay. Very friendly bar staff and waitress. Would recommend the fish pie. Will certainly eat there again. Good value.

Went here for lunch with a friend through the week - it has been done up lovely and we were really looking forward to it however the lunch menu was very limited and the service was awful! We were served by a young blonde lady and she was so miserable! We both ordered the chicken and bacon sandwich it was so bland - asked for brown Brad and French fries and thick cut chips came so asked to change - the waitress wasn’t apologetic just took it back then when it came back it was on white bread?! Couldn’t be bothered asking to change it again so left it. Wasn’t asked if we would like more drinks felt like we were forgotten about then when we left just got ignored. Costs absolutely nothing to be polite - really disappointed as we live local and thought this could be our new go to place! Won’t be returning such a shame.

Called into the Dog and Gun today for the first time in 8 years. Wow is all I can say. Lovely friendly atmosphere, very clean and food is excellent. Pub is dog friendly with complimentary treats for four legged friends. I highly recommend this place. They do breakfast on Saturday mornings only at present.

So, recently moved to the area and have found one gastro pubby type place (apart from the barn at moor hall), anyway this was a fab little find absolutely great lamb Sunday roast, staff were lovely and so reasonably priced!!! Few little hiccups with the bill and things but easily sorted. One other thing think maybe a salad of some sort should be in the starter selection Sunday menu, (goats cheese etc) all in all lovely little place

Just visited the Dog and Gun, long lane Aughton for Sunday lunch, couldn't fault either the service or the food.The pub has undergone some changes in the past but is now right on tract. Definitely recommend

First time here and was very impressed today. Lovely pub with very nice polite young lady behind the bar who was very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Drinks very nice and reasonable but was particularly impressed with the food. Sizzler was great value for money, very tasty and a struggle to eat everything (though my husband finished it off). He was also very impressed with his food and it’s definitely somewhere we’ll return to try other choices on the menu. Well done Dog & Gun!!

We went to the Dog& Gun recently for the first time since it's refurbishment. What a change! The ambience was great, the food was good and all the staff were friendly, courteous and efficient, in particular Emma who served us our meal and drinks. This was the first of many visits for us.

Hopefully a one off but we ate here as a family and ordered Starters, Mains, drinks for all. Food arrived promptly, although we did have to chase up on a forgotten starter. There was no follow up to ask how our meal was, or if we needed anymore drinks. Upon going to the bar I was then left to wait what seemed an eternity for a Pint (note to guy in white T Shirt behind the bar) be aware of your waiting customers & try to smile. It doesn’t cost anything. After finishing our meal we then had to ask for the dessert menu. After 20 minutes and nobody coming to take our order, we then had to ask. Only to be told the chef wouldn’t be ready for another 10minutes. Whilst I appreciate places can often get busy, just a little polite acknowledgement wouldn’t go amiss. It appears that young, inexperienced staff were on duty.

Just visited the newly refurbished pub and had a very warm welcome from Sean and a lovely waitress. Food for 7 and we all enjoyed our choices. Reasonable prices, hot food and served with a smile. Definitely will return and will spread the word. Keep up the good work.

It has been many years since we ate here. We had heard it had New management and the food was good. The food is better than good it's great. The place is absolutely spotlessly clean which means a lot to me as I am fussy when it comes to cleanliness. The menu is not vast but adequate. I had the steak and my husband had fish and chips absolutely fab. The chips are to die for. Highly recommended.

The Dog and Gun has been a counry pub in my backyard for many years but under it's new ownership it has leapt forward from a pub for locals and farm workers, to become a gastro-pub of note. The menu is simple yet attractive, comprehensive but affordable. Sunday Lunch we had was excellent. Tasty and varied. The dining area is limited with maybe 20 covers max but the time we went there were just 3 groups in, and that was sufficient to give a good atmosphere. The bar and lounge area have benefitted from a recent make over and on Friday and Saturday live music is provided. Well worth a visit!

Just visited theDog and Gun pub on Long Lane in Aughton tonight. This was our local for many years but not so for the last 5 years. The management at the time ran this pub into the ground. Marsdens the brewery have invested in the pub and refurbished it beautifully without detracting from the country inn that it always was .Put in 2 new mangers Sean and his business partner an excellent chef and bar staff and the future is bright for the pub.We had a very good meal , cooked beautifully and served in a timely manner.Staff all very friendly and attentive and excellent live music on Friday and Saturday night.The future is now great for our local .

Called in for lunch and couldn't believe the difference in the place afyer it's been taken over. Lovely interior still with olde world charm. Great lunch, very reasonably priced and beautifully presented. Will definitely be back.

New management have brought a refreshing buzz to the Inn. We had a great evening. The food is excellent, well priced, and we really enjoyed our steaks which were cooked to perfection. Family friendly too with a kids menu.Staff are warm and welcoming and a great choice of drinks. The refurbishment and live music at weekends has made such a positive difference.

Visited recently with family as we’d heard about the new refurb and new food menu...we weren’t disappointed! The food was absolutely amazing and staff couldn’t have been more attentive and friendly! We will certainly be back! Especially love the live music during the weekend, amazing atmosphere!
