The Devon Doorway in Wirral

I took my family for lunch last week. Service was slow and we were disappointed with the quality of the food. Brake brothers meat pie for nearly £19.00 is not good value! Dessert also disappointing. In addition the corner where we were sitting was disgustingly dirty. Really bad stains on the walls, rotting window frames and filthy wooden floor. We used to go quiet often but haven't been for a while, it's gone really down hill while prices have skyrocketed. Our bill was over £64 without a service charge for two of us. Two small sparking water Three coffees ( one was the coffee and small dessert offer ) Two mains One dessert 2/10 will not be going back in a hurry, there are so many good restaurants in Heswall now, they are going to have to up their game.

Slow service, barely cooked fish which tasted very odd.indifferent staff when we pointed this out.poor Choice on main menu, very expensive steaks. Won’t rush back…

Will be visiting anytime in the future, we will not be telling anyone else either

Had a fabulous evening! Every meal was delicious and cooked to perfection! We ordered the pork roast, beef roast and a fillet steak which were all delicious and everyone was happy! Starters of calamari and mushrooms on focaccia were equally delicious! Our server was Eloise who was the most loveliest girl and helped make our night more enjoyable! Eloise was so professional, helful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble for her! We look forward to visiting again soon!

Car park is not for the faint-hearted lol! The building looks beautiful, and the interior is cosy. Food is out of this world, delicious. Portions are ok. Service at the bar was fine. Dog friendly? 🤔. More sort of dogs allowed, but we don't really want them in there? It's getting colder now so we with small dogs prefer to eat in. We have 2 of the most well-behaved dogs on the planet. We we're told NO to having a small bowl of water for the dogs to drink from. We had to use the bowls outside. OK, I get it, health and safety, and all that. But FFS! Common sense people. Don't put the bowl where some idiot will trip over it. The lady told me fresh water was available outside, unfortunately the green algea in the water gave me the idea that it's not that fresh 😕. She wasn't happy that I asked her to clean the bowl. If they would of had some blue roll then I would of done it myself and refilled the bowl via the bib tap if she would of pointed this out. That was it, she had a dislike for me and our dogs immediately as she thought I was a pain in the leg! 😅. Overall, nice place but we won't go again unless we can get a dog sitter or it's summer and we can eat outside. Manager was a nice chap and listened to me outside "I hope?" I'm sure your the same as me if you have dogs. We want the pubs to stay open and we will frequent them and spend our cash, but please listen to what we need to make our visit a memorable one for the right reasons.

Perfect roast. Brilliant and very accommodating with the dog - you have to eat in the bar area but it’s really nice and comfortable and relaxing. Food delicious and nice range of drinks. Lovely friendly staff too.

Went on a Monday evening for the first time and the food was not as expensive as I thought it would be and the quality and service was very good. Starter was crab, 3.75/5 Main was lamb, 4/5 cooked perfectly Staff was very friendly Quite busy for a Monday night

Lovely Sunday lunch here yesterday, including sirloin steak for my wife and pork belly roast for me. Delicious! Very nice surroundings and excellent, courteous, hardworking staff too.

We had a lovely afternoon lunch at the Devon Doorway, Eloise who was our server was excellent and the meals by Luke and Mike were lovely.

Never again avoid at all cost moral was bad and made me feel uncomfortable the lady manager should be closed down

Visited Devon Doorway today 13th September 2024 and was very impressed with all aspects of food service and atmosphere. Always a place my mother enjoyed visiting over past several decades and I was totally impressed with today's offerings in every way. Thank you Libby Dave Luke and very pleasant manager. Ciao Ken

Georgia was a very pleasent server, nice food and drink

Malbec steak pie, contained gristle, & pastry was very dry & thick, not very nice.

I thought I would visit again as my last visit on Mother’s Day was very busy, so service was slow but my husband order was missed out so the rest of us were nearly finished by the time he got his. On my visiting yesterday I found service was still slow not attentive at all. After food was served no one came back to check everything was ok. My daughter’s order was ordered wrong but we kept it and tried it and it was good. I was wasn’t asked if I needed any more gravy top up. We ordered more drinks and had ask were they were. I’m sorry I will not be returning

Cheese burger was overcooked, never asked how I would like it cooked. High price for the 5 onion ring side. Waitress, however, was excellent. Pub atmosphere, but with restaurant price. Asked to move tables as it wasn't clear from website. As tables in the Bar you had to order directly from the bar, but the rest was table service but menu the same and the same price. Menu didn't have allergies on it , was expected to download an app to find out. Menu also no pound sign against the price, just a number. Not recommended

Lovely spot in the sun with a great atmosphere! Live music and warm welcome. Food was fresh, delicious and well presented.

We went for lunch on a Wednesday, having just driven by and decided we were hungry; with little expectation. The service was quick and efficient and we were seated at a corner table. The wine was great a 1st cru Chablis. Rarely do we go to a restaurant and are spoilt for choice but there were at least 5 dishes I could shave happily eaten. It is not a huge menu but there were clear vegetarian and pescatarian options. We had crab and pate for starters, belly pork and scallops and lamb shank for main and the trio of desserts and poached pear. This food was truly exceptional and clearly fresh. The flavours and presentation felt like a Michelin star restaurant but with larger portions. We had coffee and an orange martini to finish our meal and again it was amazing. Ewan was our waiter and could not have been more attentive or courteous. The restaurant was quite busy but this did not detract from the service. We will definitely be going back. I have signed up for updates on their website and as a result have a free starter or pudding. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Compliments to the chef!

Very wide choice of food, I had a tasty duck salad. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. Nice comfortable surrounding and a good atmosphere.

Excellently prepared food (by Dave, on this occasion) from a good gastropub type menu, and a very friendly and efficient service (on this occasion by Katy)

Wonderful setting exceptional food.

Good good but food was rule warm on arrival. Dont think I'd go again based on weird comments I received upon leaving. I booked dog friendly dog section in bar area and was informed upon leaving that dog bowls are not allowed. Very odd that they class this area as dog friendly yet do not allow a water bowl to be used. No signage of this and no notification of this either. We were also leaving so what's the point in scolding/enforcing said rule at that point? Think it's best to just say you're not dog friendly if they can't have water. The bar area is unpleasant area to sit also, like a green house and constantly hear fire door slamming as soon as anyone goes to the toilet.

I have eaten at the Devon Doorway many times over the years. When I phoned on the 10th to book I was told you were too busy to handle the booking and would I use the website. When I arrived on a sunny Sunday lunch time the car park was only half full.. the lady at the door told me to sit on the right hand side of the inside front area. there was no one else there except an elderly man drinking alone at the bar. I was told that I could not have water for my dog inside the pub. Last time I visited I was given a dog mat, water and a treat for her. On the menu there were only three fish options and as I had eaten the Sea Bass and Fish and chips at the Chimney in Hooton I asked for two Salmon dishes and was told that was sold out and as I had already had the two other options a couple of days before and do not eat meat I had no option. This at 13.00 on Sunday!. I then looked at the wine list and saw that there were two white wines over 40 GBP and two below 30 GBP. The Chimney at Hooton, one of MBs pubs has a larger choice. As you could not offer me food, or drink or water for my dog I took my anticipated 150 GBP spend else where and will not return to the Devon. Same but judging my the half empty car park I am not alone

We had a lovely evening at the Devon Doorway. Sam the Manager is so welcoming and efficient in her role and has an excellent team on board. When you walk through the door and see them at work you feel assured of excellent service and attention and that is what we got. Our servers were Eloise and Elliot, both lovely young people who were so pleasant and helpful and a credit to their employers. The menu is interesting and varied to suit all appetites and cooked to perfection last night by Dave and Luke….our compliments to the Chefs! See you again soon!

Family of 12 went for Sunday lunch to celebrate the 99th birthday of a family member and the 98th birthday of one of her brothers and the 95th birthday of her other brother.. The food and service was . excellent

The trains were cancelled, the bus never turned up. I was feeling a bit fed up so decided to have some lunch while worked out how I was going to reach my destination. I’m so glad I went to the Devon Doorway, I was greeted with a smile had a pint and a lovely chicken and mozzarella sandwich. The lady who served me was so lovely even charged my phone for me as I was worried I didn’t have enough juice left for my ill fated journey. The experience put a smile back on my miserable face

Had a fabulous meal at Devon Doorway last Sunday, staff & food lovely, would advise customers to be careful when parking theirs cars the car park is terrible. 3 cars where damaged that day including my husband’s & sister in laws car Obviously not the fault of the restaurant but it’s not the best car park!!!

From the moment we walked in the door the staff were great. The food was delicious. It all tasted so fresh. The only thing I'd say is it was a bit expensive for the portion size.

Excellent food, went for the trio roast dinner and the dirty burger. It seems like a well maintained place and it was great to sit outside.

The roast dinner is fantastic and the service from our waitress Eloise made us feel very welcome. Definitely recommend the Devon Doorway.

Went for 1st time yesterday for lunch. Sat outside in beer garden.. lovely atmosphere . Food was totally delicious. And sicilia lemon tart was heavenly. Staff friendly and so helpful. Highly recommend and will be returning.

When in doubt go to the Devin Doorway. I’m basing this review on two separate occasions I went here. 1). Was with my family, my sister had come home for a quick visit. I meanwhile had just finished work at Hotel Chocolat, Cheshire Oak, Outlet Village. Having managed to put a smile on every customers face. On my way home I got told by mum mother that she, sis and father were having dinner at the Devin Doorway. I agreed to attend. When I arrived I could hear the music playing, at first I’d thought it was the radio but then people pointed out the singer inside the building. She played Adele, Jack Johnson, John Denver etc. We enjoyed the atmosphere as did every one of the customers. 2). The second time was with my girlfriend. We hadn’t seen each over in a while so we agreed to have a nice romantic dinner. We were served by the incredibly kind Elliot and were treated to a lovely starter - Halloumi fries. And a wonderful main- Cod and Chunky Chips for me and for my partner (being vegetarian) a vegetarian meal (I think it was a panzanella salad). We spent the evening talking about how are jobs we’re going, how we were doing at our activities and then finally we discussed my huge success at promoting my art cushions in a competition I have entered. I have had many fond memories at Devin Doorway. The food and drinks are a tad pricey but these days what isn’t.

Very poor service by both Manager and Staff on night. Arrived at 20.05 as booked table. Was met by female staff who was miserable . Did not even say good evening. Just picked up menus and plonked them on nearest table. If she had looked it would have told her we asked for restuarant table. Did not ask if we wanted drinks.. Waited 15 minutes before being asked by Manager if wanted drinks and placed food order at same time. After 40 minutes and seeing that other persons were being served who had come in after us we raised concern with young lad who wasnt interested. Manager stated our order in had fell off !! in kitchen. After another 10 minutes now nearly 9.00pm we had starter and 5 minutes later main meal. Not very good service. Manager kept saying what do you want me to do!! . We are only human and errors happen. Not even a sincere apology. We had just travelled 190 miles from Peterborough -have ate in your pub before - food always good and normally service also - but looks like new manager and staff need training in customer service. Food delicious as always but experience has put us off going back. Have spoken to other persons who say the same about the service at the moment.

It was a nice time to visit, lots of tables taken and the atmosphere was warm. Thought the tables and chairs could do with an update/clean but main areas were welcoming. I didn't visit the bathroom so I cannot comment on that. Service was extremely good, Libby was polite, professional and quick to take our order. We enjoyed our food by chef Dave and I could imagine bringing friends with us another time for a visit.

Friendly staff and nice surroundings. We were recommended this pub when we were staying at the local Premier inn. Food was tasty and gastro pub like. Everyone in the pub was happily tucking into their food and appeared not bothered by the Euros however the pub put the football on by the bar quite close to our table. This changed the whole pleasant atmosphere of the pub and we quickly paid the bill and left.

Went for a cheeky early doors 3 course meal for £23ish per head. Very nice, fresh and well cooked with decent portions. Service was friendly and fast. Will go back to sample their main menu happily.

Only had a drink , sat outside in the sun

It is expensive but what makes it worse is the service and timing of the food. If you like drinking cold tea & cold breakfast and paying £24 for a single breakfast with extra tost +2 tea that is the place not to enjoy your morning. We arrived at 9:30 and the place still wasnt ready told us to wait but served people come after us. So they do not know how to host at all. Even I warned them that everything was cold they just ignore me. The timing is everything when you are serving food, you may served tea early but be willing to top ut up if the food is delayed. The butter that come with extra toast was melted to a liquid form. Only thing was hot was the sorry looking sausage that shows that all the food waited at least 15 minutes for this sausage to cook. I had to eat this lukewarm breakfast so fast I did not enjoy it, actually made me feel sick and there was no hot to tea to wash it down. Worse place ever.

We booked a table on fathers day, we had the fathers day menu. The choice was very good as was the atmosphere in there. The only thing and this is the only thing I had to ask for salt as there wasn't any on the table when I got it, it was faulty and put pepper all-over my dinner (I don't like pepper) so that did put a mark on my experience. That is the reason for the 3 starts.

We had our first meal at the Devon Doorway and we were very impressed. Both the food and service were excellent, and good value. The only negatives were the tight car park and small table. We will definitely return in the future.

I’ve always loved the Devon Doorway! The staff are lovely, the food is top notch, and the place has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. On my most recent visit I was looked after by Alex, Ewan and Anna, who all went above and beyond to make my visit special and enjoyable. My main meal and dessert were both absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. I chose sea bass, followed by sticky toffee pudding with rum. The sea bass was beautiful, and the sticky toffee pudding was the best I’ve ever had. I could really taste the rum! My thanks to the chefs, Dave and Andy. Thank you all, and I look forward to my next visit. Food: 5/5 | Service: 5/5 | Atmosphere: 5/5

Great food, friendly and efficient staff

I had the rib eye steak with scallops, and my husband's had the port steak with scallops. Because I am pregnant, I had to go with super super well done steak, but the steak was still good, not too dried. My husband liked his food too!! We were sitting outside. Even though the restaurant is located on the roundabout, it is still nice. It was just hard to make a right turn on roundabout because of many cars coming to that direction. Overall, recommended restaurant 😄

Really clean even the toilets, staff really helpful and good service.

Good pub and location, but on the pricier side

4 of us met for a drink and a chat. Nice bar area without any music. Fair choice of inexpensive ales, wine and spirits. Nice ambience

I had my baby shower here and it was perfect! Marco, Elliot, El and Fran were so so helpful and made my day feel special and calm. They took care of the food and it was no issue that we had guests who were gluten free. All of my guests loved the food and couldn’t believe how much food we got! So thank you to Jon and Luke the chefs. Perfect place and the most perfect day!

Really great space for my birthday! We had a bigger party so reordered the food, The kids wanted to change and asked politely, services was incredible and changed the food to match the others (probably our fault), food was given promptly, fresh and delicious! Recommend for anyone! Clean facilities and a grwat welcome from the bar!

I went for my Birthday with my Sister and Brother In Law. At first it was not a pleasant experience due to one lone male who was obviously 'off his head on something'. He was shouting and using disgusting and violent language (to several people on his phone) he was sat on the next table to us. He told the bar staff that he had just been hit by a car. Whilst I think he should have never have been allowed to sit down with a drink, the staff acted to get him removed. One of the male members of staff repeatedly and calmly asked him to leave. It took quite a while, and I did feel scared and intimidated. Everyone in the restaurant was very quiet as he could be heard all over the building. I think one of the diners called the police at one stage, but I didn't see them arrive. One of the staff said they had called back to the police to advise that this individual had now left. They also phoned the Clegg Arms to advise them to be on guard against this nutter ! After that, everything returned to normal and I really enjoyed the night. The food and drinks were delicious and Grace who served us was so lovely and attentive. She even apologised for the bad experience by way of a Birthday treat of Chocolate Brownie, Berries, Edible flowers and Happy B'day written in Chocolate Sauce. It was such a nice touch and made me feel very special. The chefs were Dave and Andy and the food was absolutely spot on. Special thanks too to the male (tall guy) member of staff who really was very brave and professional in his approach to this awful man.

Good environment, lovely staff and the food was okay but bit pricey for what it is. However, the service was very slow. We had to wait for some between starters and the mains course. The staff were laying cutleries for the following day whilst there were customers waiting for either bills or to order further.

Great service and lovely pub food with a cosy atmosphere

We visited here while in the area for food. Having never frequented a PCP before, we couldn’t have been more impressed. The food and service was absolutely outstanding. I had the scallops to start and a ribeye for the main. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the steak is one of the best I’ve ever had. The ambience in the site, the excellent quality points driven by the lovely GM , and the friendly guests made this an absolutely fab evening. Thank you so much to Sam, Fran and Ewan for your wonderful hospitality. Also to the back of house team for cooking such amazing food. We couldn’t recommend this premium pub enough. Had a lovely meal with the wife and two children under 8 recently. The staff were really friendly and helpful and service was outstanding. Food delicious, especially the pizza. Only slight downside was the overall price as it wasn't cheap. But that's the cost of living these days.

Our first time but definitely won't be our last. Fabulous food, wine and staff. Thankyou, we had a wonderful evening.

What a great meal today, strangely today I had the vegan option. The celeriac steak, which whilst it was a delicious dish, it was less of a steak and more of a chunk I embellished it with a side of mac and cheese. Starters were the sticky chicken and the goats cheese. SWMBO had the linguine for main. I finished with a Sicilian lemon tart. It has been a good while since we were last here, but we have never had a bad meal here.

Had a wonderful trio of roasts with all the trimmings plus cauliflower cheese and limitless gravy! Excellent quality and very filling. We were served by Grace who was very friendly and really helpful, a real credit to the Devon Doorway.

This was such a lovely place drove past it many times saying we must try it, so we finally did and it didn’t disappoint. The food was so tasty and the staff were so friendly. Our server Fran was lovely and nothing was too much , our chefs Jon and Graeme cooked my husband’s steak exactly how he likes it . Will definitely be making a return visit x

Wow, just wow the food here is always amazing but this roast dinner was something else, so glad this is my local it’s worth every penny and the cocktails are divine 😍would highly recommend service is so fast and the staff are lovely thanks to Dave for our lovely roast dinner and Penny our lovely server! We got the roast duo of beef and the beef rib was so tender 😍😍😍the gravy is amazing too wow I’m amazed. The cocktail was a pineapple margarita it was insanely good 😍

Brilliant from start to finish, we arrived and were shown promptly to our table by one of the managers. Not sure of her name but she was very friendly and welcoming. Grace our server was fantastic, couldn't fault her, she was friendly, knowledgable and we didn't wait for anything. Drinks topped up regularly and food arrived fast and it was all delicious. We had a selection of roast dinners, all of them were great. Thanks so much to Grace and all the staff, we'll be back soon! 10/10......Oh and the live singer in the bar area was great too.
