The Devon Doorway in Wirral

Lovely food from chefs Graeme and Callum, with server Eloise pleasant and helpful. I found the Devon Doorway a very good choice for a meal out with my elderly parents.

This was an excellent meal really enjoyed the food the staff where so kind and friendly I would definitely come here again

Was last here 55 years ago so it's changed a bit. Good food, efficient service, keen prices and great atmosphere. Mustn't leave it another 55 years to visit again - but I do I've 420 miles away now!

Attention to detail is noticed and appreciated. Rinsing wine glasses with ice to give the glass a chill, smart touch. Just need pint glasses in the fridge for a 6* review!

Lovely surroundings, interior very comfortable. Very friendly and welcoming staff especially our server, Matt who was very attentive, polite and funny but maintaining a level of professionalism. The meal was delicious,especially the rib eye steaks which were cooked perfectly by chefs Jon and Gibbo. Really would recommend The Devon Doorway. Ample car parking at the rear and plenty of outside seating around the large firepit. Only criticism regarding the interior of the restaurant is the bright white spot lighting...just too much...but that's just personal choice I suppose. Overall, a great experience and will definitely visit again soon.

Didn't try the food, just a quick pint but atmosphere was nice, beer was fresh. Only issue was the outside heating didn't work and it was rather chilly but otherwise lovely spot. Edit: After receiving a VERY swift response I have upgraded this to a 5 star because THAT is impressive attention to detail. I look forward to my next visit!

Went for Sunday lunch on a very wet, windy & miserable day in January. It was so warm & cosy inside with the real fires burning & such beautiful decor. The staff were so lovely & attentive ! I had the beef roast & it was devine. Great pub & cannot wait to go back 😀

My three friends and I had a lovely lunch . The waitress was lovely friendly polite and adhered to our needs and requirements . She was customer focused well done to her. The food was lovely and good value for money The car park is small and tricky to navigate people hadn't parked very well which is not great when you are with folks who have mobility issues Other than that our food and experience was great and we had a lovely afternoon 😊

My wife and I had a great lunch today at The Devon Doorway. The food, as usual, was tasty and well presented. Eloise the server is a credit to the pub restaurant and the chefs today, Luke and Andy, prepared excellent dishes for us.

We booked a table in the restaurant for our Anniversary meal, on arrival the restaurant felt welcoming, Eloise was most charming as we checked in and were shown to our table, drinks arrived fairly quickly and orders taken with a smile. The meal was delicious, nothing left to waste. Drinks ordered as and when with efficiency. The whole experience was lovely, helped greatly by Eloise, the manager and her staff. Thank you for an excellent meal.

Latest review, 16th. January 2015. Another excellent lunch here. My lamb rump was delicious and my wife was very happy with her half chicken with honey sauce. Lovely service from Eloise and compliments to chefs Dave and Luke, whose food was certainly not luke warm….🤣 New review:- We had Saturday lunch here with our grandson and his girlfriend, a 3 course blowout! Once again, all the food was delicious, the service from our waitress, Hollie, was excellent and the Christmas decorations very effective and tasteful. Very enjoyable indeed. Previous review:- Lovely Sunday lunch here yesterday, including sirloin steak for my wife and pork belly roast for me. Delicious! Very nice surroundings and excellent, courteous, hardworking staff too.

Visited Devon Doorway today 13th September 2024 and was very impressed with all aspects of food service and atmosphere. Always a place my mother enjoyed visiting over past several decades and I was totally impressed with today's offerings in every way. Thank you Libby Dave Luke and very pleasant manager. Ciao Ken

What a fabulous experience for me and my daughters! The service was perfect thanks to our server Hollie and the food was amazing - thanks to Shon and Gibbo accommodating two very different tastes in my kids 😆 Love it here and well worth a visit!

We visited I was surprised how good the food was. Better than Gusto the week before. This place isn’t cheap but good food and atmosphere with a singer on which was a nice surprise. Eloise served us, lovely and friendly. Complements to the chefs Graeme & Andy

I ordered fish and chips. Miniscule amount of chips (that I could count on one hand). Fish was also small and tasteless. After waiting 15 minutes to be asked if I would like a further drink, I waited at least a further 10 minutes for it to arrive. Very underwhelmed by the whole experience

We've been to the Devon doorway on many occasions the food is always excellent and the staff are always very attentive and friendly the server on this occasion was Ollie and he lived up to our expectations very well very knowledgeable and courteous

Great food, lovely festive atmosphere and good value. We made a last minute reservation and despite it being hectic on arrival we were seated quickly. The decoration was modern and well lit to counter the wooden accents and historic nature of the building. Three courses were all exquisite and left us feeling full but not stuffed. The wine was a good match and the mini dessert and cocktail combo finished the evening perfectly. Staff were friendly and attentive and took care of everything. I've been wanting to visit here for years and will not leave it so long to return.

Premier inn didn't have space to serve me (1 person) cause I didn't book, 2 days in a row got a seat in this pub, food is brilliant, staff are extremely helpful and lovley.

Katy and Sam where fantastic in helping my wife with options regarding her intolerance, and its refreshing to see staff knowledgeable in this area. Food was fantastic and a big thanks to Dave and Graeme the chefs on the day. All in all, a pleasurable midafternoon lunch which was made all the more pleasurable by Katy and Sam. Thank you both.

Good atmosphere, service and food.

Jaz is awesome. Looked after our group really well. Great with our kids and fun banter with the adults! The food was the best we've had here so far as well! I had the Hake special and my partner has the turkey roast. Couldn't below succulent both dishes were. Place is on the up for sure. Can't wait to bring my family back here. My husband and daughter had a lovely meal, I booked them in as I was working and they absolutely loved it, I was very jealous!! Both dishes they had were lovely. My husband had the seabass and our daughter had the burger, both were full of flavour and the staff were amazing, so welcoming, friendly and attentive. We'll all be back very soon. Cheers!

Excellent food and service, costs a little bit more but worth it

Well I have driven past this pub for years. Thank goodness we went in!!! Really nicely decorated and a roaring fire going. We were greeted and seated quickly. Our drinks order taken and bought over. Once we decided on food we probably only waited 15 mins or so until our food came. Wow. hot delicious and so beautifully presented. I chose belly pork and my hubby chose the cod. We also ordered some onion rings which were amazing. All the food was seasoned well. I didn't add any salt or pepper. I ate every morsel on my plate. The tartar sauce with the fish was delicious and the batter crispy. The cod flaked and was pure white. Really lovely. We will be back. Cannot believe i haven't been here before! Katy served us as well as a man who bought our drinks over. Well done Devon Doorway. You now have 2 more regular customers

Visited for the first time, and it was amazing! The atmosphere is cozy, and the food was absolutely delicious. A big shoutout to Jay, who was so helpful and friendly throughout—he really made us feel welcome and took great care of us. Definitely planning to come back soon. Highly recommend!

Disappointed with the food considering the prices. Not very hot and meat in steak pie was so tough my mum in law couldn’t cut through it. In fairness she was offered an alternative meal but given the time we had already waited for our meals we didn’t take that option. The pork belly had the taste of stale frozen meat and was mostly fat. I accept pork belly is fatty but one small slice? The veg and gravy was tasty but overall I dont feel the food is worthy of the price tag. Service was ok. Won’t be coming again- disappointed as the place looks lovely. Complaint dealt with satisfactorily.

First visit. Great choice of food. Very friendly & welcoming hosts explained different dining options. Jazz looked after us and was fab! Was super busy but still plenty of parking. 2 reasons for dropping a star which hopefully will be useful feedback. Pastry on steak pie was over baked. Filling was superb. And the music choice & volume was not suitable for dining. Had to shout to each other to be heard.

Lovely pub nice big pub, service was quick and the girls were very friendly, beer was excellent, toilets were great and very clean, it was my first visit as I was visiting.

I have never been to this lovely looking old pub before,but have drove past it many times over the years,with it's Thatched Roof,it's a Beautiful building to look at, really nice and stylish interior inside as we walked in ,very friendly bar staff and we was served straight away at the bar, we had a quick drink then we was seated at our table,our waitress was a lovely young lady named Eloise,very polite she was too,i ordered the Steak and Ale Pie,and my wife ordered the Belly Pork,both our meals were amazing,the Pie was full of flavour,and plenty of Steak in it as well,my wife said she was very impressed with her meal ,after our meal we ordered our puddings,i got the white chocolate creme brulee, and my wife got the Apple tart,and as with our mains they were also delicious,so credit too the chefs Jon V and Jon J,i would happily come back here again and recommend if your in the area you pop in and try this Beautiful Pub.

I have visited before many times, but not in the last 4 years. We visited for lunch, and from our greeting we felt very welcome. Service was brilliant with much care taken in ensuring one of our groups intolerance was checked and double-checked with the kitchen. The food was as good, if not better than the last time I visited, and the lunch menu had plenty of variety at a good price point with excellent quality of ingredients. The tables are well spaced apart from others, and the attention to all these details made our lunch experience so enjoyable.

Love The Belly pork and took advantage of my birthday offer. Very quiet for Wednesday but staff very attentive and friendly.

I took my family for lunch last week. Service was slow and we were disappointed with the quality of the food. Brake brothers meat pie for nearly £19.00 is not good value! Dessert also disappointing. In addition the corner where we were sitting was disgustingly dirty. Really bad stains on the walls, rotting window frames and filthy wooden floor. We used to go quiet often but haven't been for a while, it's gone really down hill while prices have skyrocketed. Our bill was over £64 without a service charge for two of us. Two small sparking water Three coffees ( one was the coffee and small dessert offer ) Two mains One dessert 2/10 will not be going back in a hurry, there are so many good restaurants in Heswall now, they are going to have to up their game.

Had a fabulous evening! Every meal was delicious and cooked to perfection! We ordered the pork roast, beef roast and a fillet steak which were all delicious and everyone was happy! Starters of calamari and mushrooms on focaccia were equally delicious! Our server was Eloise who was the most loveliest girl and helped make our night more enjoyable! Eloise was so professional, helful and friendly, and nothing was too much trouble for her! We look forward to visiting again soon!

Car park is not for the faint-hearted lol! The building looks beautiful, and the interior is cosy. Food is out of this world, delicious. Portions are ok. Service at the bar was fine. Dog friendly? 🤔. More sort of dogs allowed, but we don't really want them in there? It's getting colder now so we with small dogs prefer to eat in. We have 2 of the most well-behaved dogs on the planet. We we're told NO to having a small bowl of water for the dogs to drink from. We had to use the bowls outside. OK, I get it, health and safety, and all that. But FFS! Common sense people. Don't put the bowl where some idiot will trip over it. The lady told me fresh water was available outside, unfortunately the green algea in the water gave me the idea that it's not that fresh 😕. She wasn't happy that I asked her to clean the bowl. If they would of had some blue roll then I would of done it myself and refilled the bowl via the bib tap if she would of pointed this out. That was it, she had a dislike for me and our dogs immediately as she thought I was a pain in the leg! 😅. Overall, nice place but we won't go again unless we can get a dog sitter or it's summer and we can eat outside. Manager was a nice chap and listened to me outside "I hope?" I'm sure your the same as me if you have dogs. We want the pubs to stay open and we will frequent them and spend our cash, but please listen to what we need to make our visit a memorable one for the right reasons.

Perfect roast. Brilliant and very accommodating with the dog - you have to eat in the bar area but it’s really nice and comfortable and relaxing. Food delicious and nice range of drinks. Lovely friendly staff too.

Went on a Monday evening for the first time and the food was not as expensive as I thought it would be and the quality and service was very good. Starter was crab, 3.75/5 Main was lamb, 4/5 cooked perfectly Staff was very friendly Quite busy for a Monday night

Never again avoid at all cost moral was bad and made me feel uncomfortable the lady manager should be closed down

Malbec steak pie, contained gristle, & pastry was very dry & thick, not very nice.

I thought I would visit again as my last visit on Mother’s Day was very busy, so service was slow but my husband order was missed out so the rest of us were nearly finished by the time he got his. On my visiting yesterday I found service was still slow not attentive at all. After food was served no one came back to check everything was ok. My daughter’s order was ordered wrong but we kept it and tried it and it was good. I was wasn’t asked if I needed any more gravy top up. We ordered more drinks and had ask were they were. I’m sorry I will not be returning

Cheese burger was overcooked, never asked how I would like it cooked. High price for the 5 onion ring side. Waitress, however, was excellent. Pub atmosphere, but with restaurant price. Asked to move tables as it wasn't clear from website. As tables in the Bar you had to order directly from the bar, but the rest was table service but menu the same and the same price. Menu didn't have allergies on it , was expected to download an app to find out. Menu also no pound sign against the price, just a number. Not recommended

Lovely spot in the sun with a great atmosphere! Live music and warm welcome. Food was fresh, delicious and well presented.

We went for lunch on a Wednesday, having just driven by and decided we were hungry; with little expectation. The service was quick and efficient and we were seated at a corner table. The wine was great a 1st cru Chablis. Rarely do we go to a restaurant and are spoilt for choice but there were at least 5 dishes I could shave happily eaten. It is not a huge menu but there were clear vegetarian and pescatarian options. We had crab and pate for starters, belly pork and scallops and lamb shank for main and the trio of desserts and poached pear. This food was truly exceptional and clearly fresh. The flavours and presentation felt like a Michelin star restaurant but with larger portions. We had coffee and an orange martini to finish our meal and again it was amazing. Ewan was our waiter and could not have been more attentive or courteous. The restaurant was quite busy but this did not detract from the service. We will definitely be going back. I have signed up for updates on their website and as a result have a free starter or pudding. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Compliments to the chef!

Very wide choice of food, I had a tasty duck salad. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. Nice comfortable surrounding and a good atmosphere.

Wonderful setting exceptional food.

Good good but food was rule warm on arrival. Dont think I'd go again based on weird comments I received upon leaving. I booked dog friendly dog section in bar area and was informed upon leaving that dog bowls are not allowed. Very odd that they class this area as dog friendly yet do not allow a water bowl to be used. No signage of this and no notification of this either. We were also leaving so what's the point in scolding/enforcing said rule at that point? Think it's best to just say you're not dog friendly if they can't have water. The bar area is unpleasant area to sit also, like a green house and constantly hear fire door slamming as soon as anyone goes to the toilet.

We had a lovely evening at the Devon Doorway. Sam the Manager is so welcoming and efficient in her role and has an excellent team on board. When you walk through the door and see them at work you feel assured of excellent service and attention and that is what we got. Our servers were Eloise and Elliot, both lovely young people who were so pleasant and helpful and a credit to their employers. The menu is interesting and varied to suit all appetites and cooked to perfection last night by Dave and Luke….our compliments to the Chefs! See you again soon!

I have eaten at the Devon Doorway many times over the years. When I phoned on the 10th to book I was told you were too busy to handle the booking and would I use the website. When I arrived on a sunny Sunday lunch time the car park was only half full.. the lady at the door told me to sit on the right hand side of the inside front area. there was no one else there except an elderly man drinking alone at the bar. I was told that I could not have water for my dog inside the pub. Last time I visited I was given a dog mat, water and a treat for her. On the menu there were only three fish options and as I had eaten the Sea Bass and Fish and chips at the Chimney in Hooton I asked for two Salmon dishes and was told that was sold out and as I had already had the two other options a couple of days before and do not eat meat I had no option. This at 13.00 on Sunday!. I then looked at the wine list and saw that there were two white wines over 40 GBP and two below 30 GBP. The Chimney at Hooton, one of MBs pubs has a larger choice. As you could not offer me food, or drink or water for my dog I took my anticipated 150 GBP spend else where and will not return to the Devon. Same but judging my the half empty car park I am not alone

Family of 12 went for Sunday lunch to celebrate the 99th birthday of a family member and the 98th birthday of one of her brothers and the 95th birthday of her other brother.. The food and service was . excellent

The trains were cancelled, the bus never turned up. I was feeling a bit fed up so decided to have some lunch while worked out how I was going to reach my destination. I’m so glad I went to the Devon Doorway, I was greeted with a smile had a pint and a lovely chicken and mozzarella sandwich. The lady who served me was so lovely even charged my phone for me as I was worried I didn’t have enough juice left for my ill fated journey. The experience put a smile back on my miserable face

Had a fabulous meal at Devon Doorway last Sunday, staff & food lovely, would advise customers to be careful when parking theirs cars the car park is terrible. 3 cars where damaged that day including my husband’s & sister in laws car Obviously not the fault of the restaurant but it’s not the best car park!!!
