The Devon Doorway in Wirral

Looked for a gastro-pub to take my mum for Aussie Mother’s Day. Found this gem in Heswall. Sunday lunch, not too crowded. The food was well presented and very delicious. A Sunday must try is the roast trio. We were offered sides but they serve sizes were generous and glad we declined. Otherwise we would not have been able to sample the desserts selection.

Superb food and service, Florie and Ollie were great hosts and we throughly enjoyed our meal at the Devon Doorway!

We decided to revisit the Devon Doorway in Heswall after a long time away – not for any particular reason, we just hadn’t been in a while. On arrival, the welcome felt rather cold, almost as if our presence was an inconvenience. However, it quickly became clear that the team were working hard and under pressure. That said, we experienced service from several different staff members, despite the restaurant being quiet with only one other table occupied, which suggested the team could benefit from clearer direction to help them work more efficiently and feel less rushed. Once seated, we ordered drinks and went straight into our food order – one beef roast, one chicken roast, one beef duo roast, and a pizza. The food arrived in good time, which was appreciated. Unfortunately, not all the dishes lived up to expectations. The pizza and accompanying fries were tasty and well received. However, the roast dinners were a bit of a mixed bag. The chicken and the sliced blade of beef were both enjoyable, but the sirloin served with the duo was disappointing – mostly fat and overcooked to the point it resembled a burnt end. The roast vegetables were also underwhelming, particularly the parsnips, which left us wondering if they’d been near a pan at all. That said, the gravy was good, and we were grateful to be able to request an extra jug. The venue itself is lovely, with a lot of potential, but the experience fell short of what it could be. With the restaurant only half full on a Sunday afternoon, I hope a bit more focus on food quality and team coordination will help the Devon Doorway shine again – it certainly has the foundations to be a great local spot.

We went here for a family meal and were served by Helen. The food was excellent, so much so that we had 3 courses! Which is as good a testament as any to not wanting a good meal to finish!! Helen was a brilliant help and a breath of fresh air. She served with a smile and a lightness that I know is often so hard to maintain with long hours on your feet in a very busy restaurant. Nothing was too much work for her and she perfected the balance between attentive and allowing us to enjoy. What an asset she is. Thank you so much Helen and the Devon Doorway, we will be back!!

First impressions as you walk in is of a upmarket restaurant and we were suprosed by how quiet it was in a Sunday lunch time. Staff were very attentive and could not be faulted. The food (sunday roast) however let the place down. Portions were large but the vegetables were all hard. Had to ask for extra gravy which the servers came back with very quickly. Such a shame as it looks a lovely restaurant

Good gourmet pub, great food had good menu with plenty of seafood and meat. Very friendly and efficient staff.

Dissapointed, food was not the quality I expected had to complain, but was rectified quickly, not a good experience so will not visit again.

We were very happily surprised to have 3 course meal where every course was fresh and tasty as each other. Well done to Graeme, the chef today. The food was homemade and served by Eloise who was pleasant and professional. The atmosphere was great too, even for an early ebony meal.

Me and my girlfriend absolutely love it here from the live music to the aesthetics and the food every single aspect is top notch. We use this restaurant to celebrate any big achievements between the two of us and often stay at the premier inn near by to make a night of it purely cause of how much we love it at Devon’s doorway. The staff are pleasant and welcoming and the food is just spot on I would 100% recommend their scallops and you have to try their cocktails

Had a lovely wedding reception here for my partner's daughter. The staff (especially Ollie) where very attentive and very polite. Food was delicious, hot and very filling. Cocktails were lush. What I would advise is that the staff learn how to do a liquor coffee... We asked for 2 calypso coffees (Tia Maria)... They don't do Tia Maria, so apparently used an alternative. I can assure you, what we received were not liqueur coffees... They were lattes at best. No liquor.. no black coffee with floating fresh cream. These were the only let down of the day.. everything else was just lovely.

We came for a family Easter meal, the food was excellent, Dave and Graeme make a belter roast! The service was incredible, Eloise was friendly and attentive. All around a great afternoon!

Yet another winning visit to probably a top 3 pub restaurant in Heswall. We always get great service and food. Grace looked after us well, and we wanted for nothing. The pub with its lights and thatched roof looks great, and welcoming the ambience is friendly and it's a well used pub restaurant always busy which speaks volumes for the continued quality of service and food visit after visit. A favourite of ours we will be back.

This is a lovely restaurant, well presented with helpful and attentive staff. The food was absolutely delicious, all credit to our chefs Jon and Luke. Each of the party of four had three courses, wine and cocktails along the way, they were beautifully presented with just enough time between courses. Our waiter Ollie was extremely helpful when explaining the options and dishes and each course was served with a smile and an exceptional eye for detail. This waiter was professional and helpful throughout the whole evening. Overall a lovely pleasant Easter night out with friends and good dining. I would recommend this place highly.

Eloise was exceptional - great family meal - nothing too much trouble. Steak was a great recommendation, although I’d switch the onions for tomatoes next time.

Huge kudos to chefs Jon, Luke, and Graeme – they know how to fill a plate with passion. But what truly elevated our evening was the exceptional service, especially from our host Mia. She was nothing short of amazing – incredibly helpful, genuinely enthusiastic, and her food recommendations were spot on. Mia’s outgoing personality and radiant smile lit up the room, making us feel right at home. You could tell she absolutely loves what she does, and her energy is contagious. In short, The Devon Doorway delivers on every front – outstanding food, a welcoming vibe, and top-tier service. Thanks to Mia, Jon, Luke, and Graeme for making our visit so special. Truly an all around amazing place. We came in and were waited on my Penny. The chefs were John and Luke. Let me tell you…to say everything was spot on is such a massive understatement. The vibe was chill but lively. Everyone was great. They had live music playing and the vocalist Natalie is insane. Sounds like it’s pre-recorded. The food is second to none. The roast we had was top notch. Nothing was dry, everything was perfectly done. You truly would have to break out a labcoat and a magnifying glass to find an issue. If you haven’t been here before, it’s well worth a drive from wherever you’re coming from.

I was ignored when waiting to be seated, the waitress addressed the couple behind me before realising their mistake and apologised. Wine a tad expensive but food seemed appropriate ly priced. The reason for the low rating was my duo of pork dish was cold. I don't mean not piping hot or not warm enough but cold. This included the gravy. This meant rather than melting pork belly fat, it was cold. The pork fillet, cold, probable would have been fine if served immediately, but it was cold and dry. Staff DID offer to order again or something different to be fair. Having gone straight to the main with no starter, waiting over half an hour, I ate it as was ravenously hungry but with no great enjoyment. The meal was taken off the bill so would consider going back. Just very upset as if brought to table as chef intended I expect would have been delicious!!!!

Absolutely love the Devon Doorway- our go to for nice food. Particularly like Sunday afternoons with the live music. We went yesterday for a Sunday roast and it was brilliant. The roast potatoes were gorgeous- not many places do a decent roast potato, but the Devon Doorway does. I had the roast pork and it was cooked to perfection. Our waiters Ollie and Matt were excellent, really professional, attentive and checked we had everything we needed a few times. We've already booked for Christmas dinner here because it's so good, why have the hassle of cooking at home.

Lovely place with a great menu- so many delicious sounding options, its hard to choose! We came on a Monday lunchtime. Service was excellent (thank you, Ollie! ) We ordered the beef carpaccio, crab,prawn and chorizo linguine and the fish cakes. The house salad was a refreshing change from the usual and had apple, sapphire and grains (I think it may have been a version of their superfood salad). Desserts are great too- recommend the lemon tart and the rhubarb crumble, although (to nit pick) the custard needs work. All in all, a fab lunch!

Great food, all four of us gave Dave the chef a big thumbs up. Servers Jaz and Matt offered just the right amount of service without becoming intrusive.

Good service and an excellent starter. However, please avoid the main course fish and chips. The chips are good but the fish was so salty my throat was still dry the day after. The fish was awful to eat but I cannot fault the bar/waiting staff and the venue.

Dinner for a birthday. Served by a lovely waitress Jaz who was very friendly and helpful. Food was absolutely beautiful. We had mains and desert. I had the Salmon off the special menu and Creme Brulee. My friend had the lamb and the apple tart. Lovely coffee to finish. Atmosphere is lovely. Cosy and relaxed. Definitely recommend.

We had just walked the Wirral Way, so wanted something close, lovely pub with an eye catching menu, just a short walk from the centre. We arrived unannounced on a Saturday evening, it felt quiet as we approached but it was really busy with a nice vibe, thankfully they managed to fit us in. We both had the seafood Linguine accompanied by garlic bread and it was very nice, a good range of beers too, the waitress was really nice but a little nervous as it was her first night.

The food was amazing and staff were attentive and friendly. We will definitely be coming back!

We had a fantastic experience at The Devon Doorway. From the moment we walked through the door, we were warmly welcomed, and our server Eloise was exceptional. She was attentive, friendly, and made our dining experience even better. The food was absolutely delicious – every dish was perfectly cooked and full of flavour. Highly recommend this place for a wonderful meal and great service!

We were served by Eloise and Matt Davies who were lovely and welcoming and made sure that everything we needed was catered too. Our drinks and food came out quickly and were lovely!!! Couldn’t recommend these 2 enough and will definitely be coming back !!!

I have worked away and ate in so many different pubs but this one is above them all. Really good menu and offers for great value. The food is impeccable and the service is fantastic. The place even smells nice when you walk in, I highly recommend it the staff and owners have obviously worked very hard to make it the way it is.

We had an excellent Valentines meal, well cooked and excellent choices.

Was last here 55 years ago so it's changed a bit. Good food, efficient service, keen prices and great atmosphere. Mustn't leave it another 55 years to visit again - but I do I've 420 miles away now!

Attention to detail is noticed and appreciated. Rinsing wine glasses with ice to give the glass a chill, smart touch. Just need pint glasses in the fridge for a 6* review!

Lovely surroundings, interior very comfortable. Very friendly and welcoming staff especially our server, Matt who was very attentive, polite and funny but maintaining a level of professionalism. The meal was delicious,especially the rib eye steaks which were cooked perfectly by chefs Jon and Gibbo. Really would recommend The Devon Doorway. Ample car parking at the rear and plenty of outside seating around the large firepit. Only criticism regarding the interior of the restaurant is the bright white spot lighting...just too much...but that's just personal choice I suppose. Overall, a great experience and will definitely visit again soon.

Didn't try the food, just a quick pint but atmosphere was nice, beer was fresh. Only issue was the outside heating didn't work and it was rather chilly but otherwise lovely spot. Edit: After receiving a VERY swift response I have upgraded this to a 5 star because THAT is impressive attention to detail. I look forward to my next visit!

Went for Sunday lunch on a very wet, windy & miserable day in January. It was so warm & cosy inside with the real fires burning & such beautiful decor. The staff were so lovely & attentive ! I had the beef roast & it was devine. Great pub & cannot wait to go back 😀

My three friends and I had a lovely lunch . The waitress was lovely friendly polite and adhered to our needs and requirements . She was customer focused well done to her. The food was lovely and good value for money The car park is small and tricky to navigate people hadn't parked very well which is not great when you are with folks who have mobility issues Other than that our food and experience was great and we had a lovely afternoon 😊

Once again, all the food was delicious, the service from our waitress, Hollie, was excellent and the Christmas decorations very effective and tasteful. Very enjoyable indeed. Previous review:- Lovely Sunday lunch here yesterday, including sirloin steak for my wife and pork belly roast for me. Delicious! Very nice surroundings and excellent, courteous, hardworking staff too.

We booked a table in the restaurant for our Anniversary meal, on arrival the restaurant felt welcoming, Eloise was most charming as we checked in and were shown to our table, drinks arrived fairly quickly and orders taken with a smile. The meal was delicious, nothing left to waste. Drinks ordered as and when with efficiency. The whole experience was lovely, helped greatly by Eloise, the manager and her staff. Thank you for an excellent meal.

Visited Devon Doorway today 13th September 2024 and was very impressed with all aspects of food service and atmosphere. Always a place my mother enjoyed visiting over past several decades and I was totally impressed with today's offerings in every way. Thank you Libby Dave Luke and very pleasant manager. Ciao Ken

What a fabulous experience for me and my daughters! The service was perfect thanks to our server Hollie and the food was amazing - thanks to Shon and Gibbo accommodating two very different tastes in my kids 😆 Love it here and well worth a visit!

We visited I was surprised how good the food was. Better than Gusto the week before. This place isn’t cheap but good food and atmosphere with a singer on which was a nice surprise. Eloise served us, lovely and friendly. Complements to the chefs Graeme & Andy

I ordered fish and chips. Miniscule amount of chips (that I could count on one hand). Fish was also small and tasteless. After waiting 15 minutes to be asked if I would like a further drink, I waited at least a further 10 minutes for it to arrive. Very underwhelmed by the whole experience

We've been to the Devon doorway on many occasions the food is always excellent and the staff are always very attentive and friendly the server on this occasion was Ollie and he lived up to our expectations very well very knowledgeable and courteous

Great food, lovely festive atmosphere and good value. We made a last minute reservation and despite it being hectic on arrival we were seated quickly. The decoration was modern and well lit to counter the wooden accents and historic nature of the building. Three courses were all exquisite and left us feeling full but not stuffed. The wine was a good match and the mini dessert and cocktail combo finished the evening perfectly. Staff were friendly and attentive and took care of everything. I've been wanting to visit here for years and will not leave it so long to return.

Premier inn didn't have space to serve me (1 person) cause I didn't book, 2 days in a row got a seat in this pub, food is brilliant, staff are extremely helpful and lovley.

Katy and Sam where fantastic in helping my wife with options regarding her intolerance, and its refreshing to see staff knowledgeable in this area. Food was fantastic and a big thanks to Dave and Graeme the chefs on the day. All in all, a pleasurable midafternoon lunch which was made all the more pleasurable by Katy and Sam. Thank you both.

Jaz is awesome. Looked after our group really well. Great with our kids and fun banter with the adults! The food was the best we've had here so far as well! I had the Hake special and my partner has the turkey roast. Couldn't below succulent both dishes were. Place is on the up for sure. Can't wait to bring my family back here. My husband and daughter had a lovely meal, I booked them in as I was working and they absolutely loved it, I was very jealous!! Both dishes they had were lovely. My husband had the seabass and our daughter had the burger, both were full of flavour and the staff were amazing, so welcoming, friendly and attentive. We'll all be back very soon. Cheers!
