No volveremos.

Staff polite on arrival (about 20:30), shown to a seat of our choice (there was only one other table occupied). Menu, bowl of prawn crackers. Good so far. Then "sorry, cash only" - usually alarm bells at that point but a visit to the local late-night store cash point resulted in some crisp £20 notes. Nobody asked if we wanted a drink. Staff just watched from a distance, disinterested. Then those plastic table cloths covered in what can only be described as cling-film. Yuck. 15 minutes studying the menu, still no offer of drinks or "are you ready to order?", we decided to take our crispy notes elsewhere. The menu comprises mostly of pages and pages of pictures and prices. Interesting selection, it has to be said, but very expensive, unless you stick to plain rice and traditional standard food. Staff did not seem to mind us leaving, even refusing my offer to pay for the prawn crackers. Looks like a struggling business and they seem to have no desire to make an effort. Shame, good venue but...sort out the customer service.

Having recently visited Chengdu in Sichuan, China. I was eager to visit this restaurant and try out the menu. Indeed it serves many non-western foods: intestines, kidney, chicken tongue etc including spicy hot pot. Having read the reviews I can see why the rating are either very good or awful! I chose to go native and had spicy pig intestines, fried tofu and bell peppers and bokchoy. £34 with Chinese tea included. The meal came quickly after the waiter double checked that we knew we were ordering intestines! It was tasty food and we enjoyed the Chinese tv in the background. However when my wife returned from the female toilets she was not impressed with the cleanliness. So how to score 4/5 for food and 2/5 for toilets gives an average 3/5. Would I go back again? Perhaps but there are another dozen Chinese restaurants to try out in Bath first. Perhaps if I have Chinese friends visiting this would be the place to take them.

While the food may be good, the attitude of the staff is very important and their behaviour was unacceptable. I loved the food the first time I visited the restaurant, but this was my second and last time to ever step into that place. -Disappointed customer

If it is authentic, and I mean authentic, Chinese food you are looking for in Bath then, for us, the Crown is as good as it probably gets.An excellent, if not somewhat extensive menu (complete with pictures) included dishes unlikely to be found on most Chinese restaurant menus, including the hotpot with options of meat, fish or combined, the tables, with their hobs and cooking facility built in, allow for this sociable style of dining and is rarely found outside China itself (this is the first time we have happened across such personally).Set in the former pub, of the same name, they have an amazing array of flora outside which could put a lot of parks and gardens to shame. It was a beautifully tended building and a lot of care has gone into making the exterior a prime and welcoming feature.Inside, it is light and bright and although the décor is quite simple the main focus is the food they serve and, as I mention above, their extensive menu.We opted for several dishes including the unusual duck tongue with chilli, which was rather on the hot side (we do like to go a bit off the wall and as traditional as we can and our culinary motto tends to be “when in Rome and all that”). The duck was a very good dish apart from the small bones in each tongue (who would have thought a tongue would have bones in, but ducks obviously do!), egg fried rice, soft battered prawns (prefer the crispy/tempura batter so not one for us to try again), baby cuttlefish which was very good and one of my personal favourites of the evening, sizzling beef (excellent) and Dan Dan noodles which were very tasty with the right amount of spice but were a bit messy to eat (or was that just us) due to their size and length - I think we had been expecting the vermicelli noodles but nonetheless this was a good additional course to rice for our meal. The restaurant has a small bar and wine selection but the prices were most reasonable.Overall, prices were very good and the portions substantial and the Crown is well worthy of a visit. We enjoyed an excellent meal with good service at a good price, what more could we ask for.Well worthy of a visit I am sure our first will not be our last and highly recommended.

The owners are very proud of serving food that is not the usual anglicised rubbish served up in supposed Chinese restaurants and we were delighted to let the owners choose what we ate. I first heard that this historic public house had been converted into an excellent Chinese restaurant from one of my Chinese PhD students. When I checked it out in December 2014 the food was amazing but the staff were still working out some kinks, for example when we asked if they had a wine list they waved one bottle each red & white from behind the bar and laughed with us. I dropped by the other day and they are beyond polished. All of their fantastic cuisine (except noodle & rice dishes) have been carefully photographed. The pub has been very carefully restored and is a fantastic space, with rooms upstairs. More than half the tables were occupied by Chinese patrons, one table with an elegant, trendy young American couple got a surfeit of dishes (I couldn't tell whether this was intentional, but they didn't seem to mind!) I was alone so just got some cold Sichuan noodles and a Tsing Tao beer -- even the bottled beer was fresher and nicer than you ever normally get in Europe, and the noodles were the first I've had in Europe with the proper novocaine Sichuan pepper experience! If you want trad English Chinese food, don't go here. That's like walking into a high-end French fish restaurant and wondering why you can't get deep-fried Mars bars like at the local chippy.

We tried a sweet and sour fish (so good), a dish with vegetables, lotus flowers and prawns; delicious pak choi with a garlic sauce and several meat dishes (which I don't eat but my companions loved). Upstairs is for food... and now downstairs has been redecorated for kareoke and parties. I think the Crown Inn chinese restaurant is a really special place - high end food in a very chinese style (which yes does include the TV on, but i don't understand Mandarin so it didn't bother me at all).

A quiet Wednesday one thought, how wrong could he be? After deciding to have a Chinese meal for our mid-week catch up, anticipation was high. Not since Dong Dong won gold in the trampoline event at the London Olympics had hopes been raised to such a level. The location was great and even had a car park. As we entered, there was a distinctly authentic feel to it. It was clean, nice interior and a warming welcome. So far so good! Menus were nicely laminated and a clear Chinese/English description was given for each dish. This was as good as it got. I ordered the uncontroversial spicy chicken with rice and my friend ordered the spare ribs with a side of noodles in a hot sauce. The food quality was terrible; we now know the literal meaning of the word spare. To make matters worse, a massive TV was on in the background with what I can only assume was the Chinese version of X Factor, definitely too loud for a restaurant. I am glad that the judging panel of that show wasn’t sat judging the food quality I was eating. I was surprised how expensive it was. You could get a very good meal in the centre of Bath with an armada of drinks for the same price. Without being too graphic there is no need for me to have colonic irrigation anymore as my body is totally empty. To anyone that has given this 5 stars, I must assume this to be a joke unless you have never had food outside the comfort of your own home.

I mean, why on earth would anyone order "sweet and sour pork" or any other anglicized-canto menu items that populate 90% of this nation's takeaways? Widen your palate and educate yourself on regional chinese cuisine...I can think of no better place in Bath to do that.I'd strongly recommend any of the North-eastern dishes or sichuanese dishes on the menu.

This place was awful. We ended up there as we couldn't find any parking and were desperate for a meal and this place had a car park. That was it's only good thing. We ordered from the expensive menu and waited for our food. First my noodles arrived without a main and before any of my husband's food. My noodles were also completely missing the vegetables you might think necessary on an order of 'noodles with mixed vegetables.'Eventually the rest of the food arrived with many issues. First the spare ribs were not sweet and sour but in a strange brown sauce. I questioned if they were the correct thing but was told they were. We'll not like any sweet and sour I've ever tasted! My husbands meal was so spicy he could barely eat it and he's not a wimp when it comes to spice! It was just tiny balls of fried chicken with hundreds of slices of chilli - nothing else! As I was eating, the chef marched out and took my noodles from under me without a word. After 5 minutes we questioned what was going on and were told that he was adding the veg. After another 5 minutes they still hadn't returned and we complained that I would be eating my side once the main was finished. They didn't really react at all! They offered us no reduction for the chaos and the food was served on chipped plastic plates. Yet we were still robbed of nearly £40 for 2 mains only! Don't go there!

We were having a weekend in Bath and as this was just round the corner decided to call in on a Friday night. Some of the staff looked a little relaxed in their attire and there were only a few other hardy eaters in attendance. The wise amongst you would say 'Leave Now!' but we were hungry and persevered. We were given menus by the denim clad waitress and opened them with eager anticipation. We were greeted by images of glossy meals and very small descriptions of the food itself. We decided to avoid the intestines (maybe the original delicacy was lost in translation) and go for a selection of three main courses.1. Sizzling Beef - This came sizzling away and initially was OK but once it cooled a little, the sauce took on a consistency of Ghostbusters slime.2. Crispy Battered Pork - This little gem managed to miss on 2 out of 2 of the descriptive elements. The batter was soggy and I don't even want to know what was inside but it didn't have the firmness of the pork that was expected. We actually asked them to remove this one from the bill as it was so bad.3. Chicken in Cashew Nuts - This was probably OK but by now our taste buds had gone into spring hibernation and we were ready to leaveNot a great experience although I was pleasantly surprised that we all remained in good health the following day.

Prawn crackers had obviously been put in the bowl a good hour or two previously as they were a bit soft. Pricing makes no sense: £2.80 for a pint, but £9.80 for a bowl of greens?? Generally very expensive for bland food swimming in oil. Even the soup had fat solids floating in it once it started to cool down. I've driven past this restaurant many times thinking "We must try it sometime" and last night was the night. (It was to be the first and last time). What a disappointment. There were about 4 other tables occupied by Chinese people which, as another reviewer said, we took to be a good sign. However, the group that left as we sat down had left half their food. We subsequently realised why..... The remaining tables also appeared to be family or friends.Firstly, the prawn crackers were stale. (At this point, we should have left, but thought we'd give it a chance. Big mistake). The menu was also expensive and range of dishes on offer 'unusual' shall we say. I ordered Sweet and Sour Pork, as their 'special version' of this dish, in a "vinegar sauce" didn't appeal. My husband ordered seabass. My tough Sweet and Sour Pork DID, strangely, have an overriding taste of vinegar (despite being the conventional version) and my husband's seabass arrived with a red chill hanging out of it's mouth - revolting! Was this to represent a tongue perhaps?? Artistically, NOT GOOD!! Whether the chef had had an accident with a bottle of the orange sauce that was intended for my pork (but which was instead served brown), I don't know - but it arrived smothered and literally "SWIMMING" in the stuff. My husband made his way through it to the fish, because he was hungry. I left virtually my whole meal. The staff looked at us, muttering to each other, but no one came to ask us if there was a problem with the meal or, needless to say, if everything was ok with our meals.... Even the Jasmine tea tasted stale and weak and was served in cups that were too hot to hold. No options of set menus, by the way, and the menu is littered with spelling mistakes. There was the occasional "Prawn" on the menu but unless there is another fish I haven't heard of, most of the prawn dishes are spelt "Prown". What a disappointment, also, to find not a single duck dish on the menu. Then came the bill. Still no question "Did you enjoy your meal?" of course. It was patently clear, I hadn't, but I was still presented with the full bill of £35.00 for the seabass, pork, and rice (not worth commenting upon) and jasmine tea. The staff proceeded to dispute that there was anything wrong with my food, after asking the chef to taste it. At that point I said I was not going to get into an argument with them and left, feeling totally ripped off. We appeared to be the only customers at this point, so left. The atmosphere and service in the "restaurant" is dreadful. It is, quite simply, my worse experience of dining in a Chinese Restaurant. I can now drive past having satisfied my curiosity, wondering how long, given the number of wonderful restaurants we have in Bath - Chinese/Thai cuisine included -, it will survive.

We went few times at the Crown Inn. The place is crowded with mostly Chinese students and this is already a good sign. Food is good, quite pricey but large portions. Most dishes are full of oil and chillies (too much) but very tasty and well prepared. Service is quite poor. In our last visit the steamed rice was too soft and very overcooked. My bowl smelled disturbingly ammonia. We ordered and they brought on the table a wonderfully perfumed sizzling peeper beef. We started enjoying the dish when the waiter came to clean the nearby table and we were overwhelmed by a strong smell of citrus disinfectant...Food is good but there is large room for improvement especially considering that prices are those of restaurant with much better and more professional service

In Bath, where most restaurants are packed, The Crown was empty and there is a good reason why. The 'staff' had no notion of the role of a waiter, shabby and dressed in inappropriate leather jacket. Food was quick but then it would be when the basis was ready prepared frozen lumps or 'pork with cabbage' composed of ready cooked rashers of streaky bacon swimming in oil. As for the atmosphere, lugging mattresses up and down the stairs and constant hoovering in a boringly furnished room wasn't what I look for when I go out. Cartons of cleaning fluid dotted around the place didn't inspire either. Also, my table had loose wiring to a table plate warmer pad. At the end of the meal we were shown a scruffy piece of paper which was written in Chinese and told how much the meal cost, and finally, when paying the bill, the man quite directly looked at the pin number as we paid.

This was the only place open near our close-by 2 night house rental. It turned out to be well-prepared and delicious Chinese food. Most of the clientele were Chinese or non-Chinese locals. Definitely not a tourist spot, but good food in nice surroundings.

I'm ambivalent about writing this review because, if I'm honest, I'd rather this place be kept somewhat secret. It was certainly an unexpected find (in the recently refurbished Crown Inn in Bathwick) Put simply, Bath is extremely fortunate to have a place like this. The food is excellent. The owners are from North East China (I forget which city) which clearly influences the cooking. However the menu also extends to more familiar Sichuanese and Cantonese dishes. It's not the cheapest place to eat but frankly it's the ONLY place you'll find authentic cooking of this kind in the UK outside of London.

We were in Bath for a couple of days and saw this place by chance. I thought it was a pub till I saw "Chinese food". We went in not sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. It seemed fairly busy but we managed to get a table. We ordered a few dishes which came out piping hot and tasty. As we were there, the restaurant got more and more busier. Prices were reasonable and lots of authentic Chinese dishes on the menu. Would definitely go back if we were in the area again!

We were looking for something to eat as it was quite late. We saw the sign from the street and saw it was Chinese and decided to give it a try as the reviews were positive. They were friendly despite the late hour and food was delivered quickly and freshly cooked. The portions were a very decent size and the food was excellent. The food seems to be very authentic and you should be careful when ordering. We ordered two dishes and the mandarin beef was fantastic. The other dish was also fresh but unfortunately not too my taste but it smelled good and looked amazing.

I rarely eat Chinese food in the UK as it is invariably drowned in MSG and bears no resemblance to the real thing. At The Crown we at last have proper Chinese food in Bath - probably thanks to the large numbers of Chinese students here. If you're not familiar with the real thing you may find the menu a little hard to interpret, but if you ask the staff they can help you - or just be adventurous! Wine doesn't appear on the menu but they do have some. Highly recommended and good value.

My husband and I went for a meal here a few weeks ago and we both agreed that it was not only the worst Chinese meal we had ever eaten, it was also probably the worst food and service we have encountered anywhere. The owner made no attempt to explain the menu which was in Chinese. So with much difficulty we managed to order our food. The restaurant was filling up with people, mostly Chinese. A good sign! We waited one hour and 10 minutes before the food came. Dishes were streaming from the kitchen in the meantime, heading for the tables of Chinese people who had arrived after us. When our food finally arrived, the order was incorrect so we sent part of it back. Most of the food we ordered was extremely salty and of poor quality I could not eat one of my dishes.I refused to pay for all of it. The Waitress informed the owner who glanced over at us and shrugged while tuning his back on us. I payed £40 for an abysmal meal and felt I had been robbed. The owner obviously did not care and appeared totally unconcerned as his restaurant was filled with what appeared to be Students from Bath University with wealthy parents. It appeared that large quantities of untouched food had been left on their tables. My disappointment with the food was compounded by the attitude of the restauranteur. Two other tables next to us suffered the same fate that evening, commenting on the poor service and inedible food.

3.5 stars overall - but rounded up to four. We ordered bbq ribs, crispy fried beef, egg fried rice, plain rice, chicken chow mein and sweet and sour chicken balls. I supplemented the meal with my own slow cooked pork in a 5-spice sauce. This is a basic Chinese takeaway that seems to be doing ok as a business. I’ve moved house recently and this is now my nearest takeaway. I’ve been driving past it for years and always wondered what it was like. Now I know. It is a basic takeaway doing the standard stuff. Not terrible but not fine dining. The one star reviews are just as unrealistic as the five star reviews in my opinion. The ribs were fine. Tender enough and sauce not too overpowering. Not as tough as I’ve had from other takeaways in Bath recently, so a thumbs up, overall. Sweet and sour chicken balls was the standard bits of chicken battered and deep fried and served with a pot of luminous bright red gloopy sauce. No vegetables were harmed (or used even) in the making of this dish. Separate sauce is appreciated - chicken still crispy. A classic of old school takeaways. It was what I expected and I wasn’t disappointed. The crispy shredded beef was for my daughter. Not much beef compared to the batter in this one. (I’ve had similar before, so I think this is the style of this dish.) And because it was served in the sauce in a sealed container it had no great chance of being crispy when I’d got the food home, despite being close by. I’ve had better but this wasn’t as terrible as made out in other reviews. Chicken chow mein was a generous portion. Salty but not too bad. I would have liked the option of some Chinese leaf / Pak Choi - or some broccoli or something, but this might not be that sort of takeaway! Staff seemed friendly. Got some free prawn crackers and a calendar. Freebies always go down well. All served on time, and hot enough. Not too expensive nor would you expect it to be. The best dish I ate was the slow cooked Chinese style pork. Oh hang on. I cooked that, sorry! Overall this was fine, as expected and I will be back, especially as I’m close by now.

Really lovely Chinese! Cash only. Was hesitant cause of past reviews not being very frequent but it hit the nail on the head. Mums request for her birthday and she was happy as Larry (: Had mainly vegetable dishes but she said the duck and black bean was super good
