When we arrived at the pub at 6.00 last Thursday evening for a meal we were the only people in the restaurant, we placed our order to a lady in a fleece!!!! Not very professional, we placed our order starters & main course, we waited 45 mins for the meal to arrive, when it arrived it was our main course no starters my husband said to the the young lad where was our starters!!!! He said he didn't know we ordered starters did we still want them we said yes he came back & told us they had not been ordered, he took the main meal back & we asked him not to keep the meal warm & we don't want it to be heated up, another long wait for starters to come prawn cocktail was disgusting it was served on a limp dark lettuce leaf. After another long wait main meal arrived the sirloin steak meal I ordered was not very nice the steak was very light in colour it did not look like a steak & it was tasteless also the chips were frozen thin cut chips, think on we were the only People in the restaurant so they were not rushed of there feet. The ambiance of the pub could be better it is not a very good advert to see the double wall lights bulbs with only one bulb working in all of them!!! I wonder if they are short of money as it looks like they cutting down on funds which is not a very good advert for the customers. This pub was a great pub years ago & it looks like it is struggling, needs something done with the ambiance & better served meal!!!! This pub could lend itself of being a great pub with good meals!!!

Ordered fish and chips..quite expensive and i was served frozen chips and a huge amount of batter with little actual fish..very greasy and a lot of flies flying around the tables..when you pay that kind of money you expect home made chips and a decent portion of fish...won't be going back

While staying local we decided to have our evening meal st the Crown. The pub was quiet except for what I expect were a few locals . The pub is what I would call more of a local in the style of decoration with a nice area with an open fire in it. The service was okay but not what I would call friendly. The food was home made and very tasty. As the pub was quiet could not judge it's atmosphere . Would I go here again ? Probably not .

We were stopping nearby and our host recommended several other places so when I looked at the reviews for here I was surprised it wasn't on our list. I phoned up to book us a table for later that evening (it was a Saturday and we expected it would be busy). Very friendly response on the phone. Easy to find. Found parking across the road easily. Very welcoming on arrival. Had a chat with barman and people at the bar were chatty. Sophie, who served us our food, was very amiable. Wine was alright for the price- I would've paid more for a better Chardonnay. The food was delicious. We waited a bit for it but no longer than you'd expect for freshly cooked food being made to order. I love pizzas; I eat them a lot. This was delicious: very cheesy and lovely soft, squidgy base. Warren had the fish burger and was equally impressed with his. We've mentioned how good it was to the place we were staying. She mentioned a change of hands. I hope she gives it a try. £40 for a bottle of wine and two main courses (and my lunch the next day- I honestly could not eat it all- see photo). Would definitely visit for food and friendly atmosphere. Double thumbs up, guys and hi to the staff working on Saturday night (Sophie, man at bar and whoever made our yummy food!)

Four adults and a dog were brilliantly taken care of in this lovely, unspoilt pub. Tucked away off the main road but easily accessible from Grange over Sands to the south and Windermere to the north. Excellent pub food. Fish and chips fit to erase the memories of more recent disasters and a pie with proper beef, gravy and crust. Altogether great experience. Try not to miss this one if you're in the Cartmel area and want a break from the rarified atmosphere! Usual prices. Big portions. ***** service from friendly staff.

Dropped in with friends and kids on boxing Day for a snack and drinks. Staff unwelcoming and rude, obviously didn't want our custom. My wife and son are Coeliacs so need gluten free food, staff said they did gf options but clearly didn't have a clue and, in fact, there was pretty much nothing gf available other than salad. The pub itself is really nice, it's local to me but this was the first time I've ever been in and I won't be rushing back. It's closed down in the past a couple of times and if they don't get their act together it'll be closing down again soon...

We visited this pub 3 times while staying locally at a holiday rental. It was only a couple of minutes walk from our holiday rental, so very handy for a quick pint or two!On each occasion we visited I can't say the staff were very friendly, certainly not rude, but then again not very welcoming, more interested in chatting to one another. The drinks were good but the food in my opinion was only average and a little pricey for what you get. The chips which came with many dishes were not nice at all. Also you really need to book ahead, not sure why though as each time we visited without a booking the restaurant area was almost empty but they still insisted on a booking, on one occasion we were told the earliest available table was in two hours, in the meantime the restaurant was almost empty for the next hour or so. I can only assume they were short on Kitchen staff at the time and trying to manage things.

Spent 2 nights in High Newton and decided to try the Crown Inn for dinner. It was good enough that we went back for our second night, too, which is not something we would usually do, preferring to try somewhere new. The Morris dancers were entertaining the first night. The food was tasty, and plentiful. I enjoyed my lasagne and my husband had the fish platter, which he was delighted with, commenting it was the best smoked salmon he'd ever had and the rest was delicious, also. The portions were large, so no room for dessert. The only downside was the time waiting between ordering and being served the meal. On the second night, we were earlier though the time to get the meal was not much less. I had the haddock and chips and again, a huge portion. Good value for money, friendly staff and a taste of the strawberry and rhubarb cider was interesting. I could get used to it. I would go back in a heartbeat.

My husband and I were just out on a Sunday drive & feeling hungry. We saw signs from the main road for The Crown Country Inn and decided to follow unsure of what we would find. We came to a beautiful pub, it didn't have its own car park but this wasn't a problem as there were plenty of spaces available nearby. Upon entering the pub we were greeted warmly by the lovely man behind the bar. I ordered the lamb dinner, my husband ordered the beef. We eventually after a bit of deliberation took our seat in the window seats near the roaring open fire, perfect on a cold, rainy winters day. The atmosphere was lovely, the locals were friendly, the food was tasty and of good quality & the staff were attentive and hospitable. I would happily eat here again & have no hesitation in recommending it. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.

It started well. We were shown to our table by a polite young man in a friendly and professional manner. The menus and drinks arrived promptly. After this it went down hill. It took 35 minutes for the starters to arrive. We received an apology for the delay- fair enough. Unfortunately it then took another half hour plus from our starter plates being taken away to get our main courses. I should add that the pub was very quiet - about one quarter full. I dread to think how long we would have waited if the pub had been busy. There was only one person at the front of house- and I wonder how many there were in the kitchen. It was clearly understaffed. If the food had been exceptional, we might have forgiven these sins-- but the food was average- not terrible, but not great either. I would not go back and cannot understand how it got a Certificate of Excellence.

We chanced on here to stop for a late lunch on our journey back home from The Lakes. There was plenty of seating outside but we decided to sit in the window seat inside, which is done in an olde worlde style. The food took a while to come but it was worth waiting for. Cumberland sausages, mash and veg with proper real onion gravy. Fish and chips with crispy batter, thick chips and homemade tartare sauce. Big portions. Decent range of real ales including local ones too.A very minor comment would be that the mushy peas were slightly luminous and not chip-shop style - perhaps worth sourcing a different supplier. They still tasted pretty good though! The food was better than I was expecting for a typical pub lunch, definitely restaurant quality. Therefore I'd recommend stopping for lunch or dinner here!

A largish group of us ate here this week. The menu is quite limited, particularly in the dessert arena. Steak and ale pie was good, as was the gammon and egg. Very reasonable prices. Nice people serving. Awkward for disabled, not that easy to get in with a mobility scooter, and the corridor to the toilet was too narrow, we had problems with that. But generally, yes, try this out, a nice place to eat

The Crown marks one of the rare occasions where we have enjoyed ourselves so much that we have gone back again on the very next night. Barely half a mile's stroll from our B&B, it ticked all the right boxes: great local ales, warm welcome, lovely food, and plenty of table space for us to play cards. The landlord is something of a wideboy and past master at trying to make it sound as if he's rushed off his feet when there are only eight patrons in the bar, but he's backed up by an excellent chef who produced a great lasagne and terrific rump steak. Little touches like local rocket in the salad, and good seasoning on the chips (awesome chips, by the way) were not overlooked. For starters, both nights, we both had the homemade pate, which is as big an endorsement as I can give it.The atmosphere is a winner. Neither a 'locals pub' nor a restaurant-pub, it is dog-friendly, biker-friendly and tourist-friendly. We felt thoroughly at home and I could have spent many happy evenings with the well-cellared local pale ales.High Newton is a lovely village now that the A590 has been bypassed and doesn't go right through the middle. But you should definitely take the old road and go and find the Crown for a great evening.

Good for those traveling from afar, plenty of nooks and crannies to tuck yourself away and enjoy your pint. There is a god selection of beers and the food is good quality, even if the menu is a little boring (usual pub food with a fancy title). There is a large restaurant area and a total of 3 fires in the pub so come winter you should be able to find a warm spot to put your feet up if you've been hiking in the area. No car park, so best place is to park next to the railings directly across from the main door, usually plenty of space. Pub is also a BnB, rooms are well presented and have good facilities, large TV, nice bathroom ect.

Odd one this the food good but the staff reception is poor. We visited on Sunday to be told there was a 30 minutes wait as they were busy. The restaurant was empty and the bar about 6 tables only had two seated tables. So as this is the only place to eat we waited. I believe some people should work in bars and others shouldn't, the person who greets you and serves you are the face of a pub the food may be good but if the service isn't guess which one gets a reaction.

Stayed locally in the village and went to the pub for an evening meal. Was fairly quiet so probably just locals as off the beaten track. Prices are quite expensive for what you get but the food is very good. Not sure if we got the quality they normally provide as we arrive there are 8.30pm to be told that the kitchen shuts at 9pm so only limited choice from the menu. Beware if you order a steak as you literally get steak and chips. You would expect a bit of salad and maybe some home made onion rings but it was literally steak and chips. We were showed to the table but they forgot we were there until a nice waitress came to ask if we had ordered. No Sunday roast available either. It's as though they cater for day trade and not late evening even on a bank holiday Sunday. Unfortunately there was a group of loud drunken people who were staying at the pub so we moved down to the front with other people. A nice place but quite expensive for what you get.

Some of the (senior) staff didn't seem bothered about serving us, even though we were the only ones standing at the bar and, what we took to be the management, had phones pressed to their ears or were sat reading or on engrossed in their iPads. Everything seemed too much trouble, (except for the young lady who attended to us at breakfast), and although booking a specific room nearly two months BEFORE our visit, we got a smaller room with no wardrobe or drawers of ANY nature (Room 6). Our complaint was investigated but we were told the room we wanted (and had specifically booked) was occupied. Although an offer was made to move us in to it for one night, then back out again for the 3rd night. We declined! The restaurant was over-priced and seemed to be aimed at the top end of the market, where us poor 'coupon' holders were treated as a mild annoyance... something that had to be "put up with" was the feeling we were left with :(We were on a three Nights stay and wished it had been one!

We dined here twice while on holiday in High Newton. Both times we really enjoyed the delicious food that was served to us. Clearly a lot of time and effort goes into producing such wonderful starters, mains and desserts. We also enjoyed the comfortable surroundings and relaxed atmosphere and could not fault the service we received. Definitely worth a visit for anyone passing through High Newton.

Nice choice of food, average about £13 for a main course. Check what vegetables come with your meal or you may be left a bit peckish. Sides to top you up are £2.50. Better than your average pub grub, would happily eat at the Crown again.

Met friends here for a drink and had an hour chatting at the bar with great staff and friendly locals. We had a table in the restaurant booked for two but it was soon changed to a four even though they were busy. We had snacks, starters and main courses all of which were great. This is a lovely pub, not far from Cartmel and definitely worth a visit. Special mention to Abe, bar manager, who's really polite and professional.

3 of us came for Sunday lunch on a cold, wet summer's day. The log fire was burning and staff were welcoming. We ordered 2 roast beef dinners and an a la carte meal. The food was excellent. There was so much beef, perfectly cooked. Lovely vegetables . The puddings were tasty too. Our only criticism was that we asked for generous custard and were amazed that this was added as an extra to the bill: this has never happened in any restaurant or pub before.

Booked for 6 p.m on Friday evening and arrived about 5 min early. Just seemed disorganised: would have been better to be asked to sit in the bar with a drink until they were ready. As it was, the wine list was being changed and it was a bit hit and miss trying to sort out a bottle of wine. Then we were given menus and after we had ordered they were writing up the specials, so we weren't given the option of ordering them. Thought the menu was a bit limited. Service was fine, but can imagine it would slow down as they got busier. It was o.k but could have been good.

6 of us visited here for my mums birthday dinner. We booked a table for 8pm and were seated near to that time. After 30 minutes we asked if we could order wine and food, another 20 minutes later we ordered! The pub doesn't have many tables but they clearly couldn't cope with the amount of staff they had. 1 hour and 30 minutes after being seated our starters arrived! By this time we were starving! There were no nibbles, bread or anything put out considering our wait! The food is ok but nothing I would rush back to have again! I had the shepherds pie which although tasty is fully loaded with meat and barely any potato topping or sides of vegetables. My husband had the lamb and cockle pudding which was served as pudding covered in gravy! No vegetables on the side. All in all, the good was ok but extremely expensive for what you got. Side dishes need to be included for the prices! The staff were slow and there was no apology at all for us having to wait! I would not return as there are many better places to eat in the area.

Having arrived on time and been shown to our table we then waited 20 minutes to be given a menu and to order drinks. When we did eventually order food it took an inordinate time to arrive. After about half an hour we were told that the order had not gone through to the kitchen. They communicate with the kitchen via tablet computers and get no acknowledgement of receipt. God knows why - it would be easier and more efficient to take the order through to the kitchen. In fairness we were given a free drink as an apology, but it didn't really make up for the fact that we had to wait over an hour to get anything to eat.The menu was sparse - no indication of where ingredients came from, whether the meat was local etc. The only vegetarian main course - on what was up to then the hottest day of the year - was cheese and leek pie with puff pastry and boiled potatoes. There were no salad main courses, and only one fish - breaded plaice with chips and peas, which I had - it was OK, but no better than the average pub.I will say that the starters we had - mushroom soup and crab cakes - were excellent. The beers were also great. No idea about desserts, we'd been there too long to bother by then. They really need to buck their ideas up and serve some more adventurous vegetarian options. There's no excuse these days for the only veggie dish to be boring cheese and leek pie. This used to be a regular dining place under the old management, but I fear it'll be a long time before we venture back after this experience.

I find the previous comment difficult to believe as it is nothing like what we have experienced.Despite residing in The Southern Lake District good quality Sunday lunches are difficult to find.We have been 3 times during the last month, a mid week evening, a Saturday night and today for Sunday Lunch. On each occasion we were welcomed and Adam nod staff were extremely helpful. The chef was originally at The Pig and Whistle Cartmel where Simon Rogan had an input. The food is varied with flair and the roast beef today was cooked to perfection with 3 vegetables and crispy roast potatoes and tasty Yorkshire Pudding. At under £11 this is tremendous value for money. There is also the normal well priced menu, great choice of wines and 4 real ales.We were fortunate today as there was the beer festival and groups playing.Well worth a visit and highly recommended

Admittedly we arrived without a reservation (which I fully accept means we run the risk of not getting a table). There are however ways to ensure a return visit - being brusque and offhand about our lack of reservation is not one of them. Thanks though go to the waitress who did her best to sort us out despite her managers obvious lack of interest.

On arrival you notice the warm and friendly atmosphere within the pubic bar, after ordering drinks we were shown to our table in the restaurant which is quirky and set out very nicely with plenty of room between tables. The meals we ordered were very good, my wife had a goats cheese starter followed by the burger, my daughter bread and balsamic/oil followed by a steak and I opted for the scotch egg followed by the lamb and cockle suet pudding both of which I would highly recommend. It was obvious the food is freshly prepared and cooked (no portion control here, bring a hearty appetite). Finally staff were very attentive without being overbearing, all in all well worth a visit.

Our normal pub in this area of the world was the Pig and Whistle in Cartmel. However after Simon Rogan relinquished the lease, the staff disbanded, which was a shame because Gareth's cooking was quite simply some of the best high end gastropub food I have tasted. So I was very happy to find out that Gareth, along with Adam from the Pig, had re-located to The Crown, and my wife and I decided to pay them a visit, a £10 taxi ride each way from Cartmel. On arrival the man bar area was packed, yet the staff behind the bar were quite adept and serving and moving onto the next customer. There is plenty of seating in the main bar area, with bay windows overlooking the village. There is a beer garden at the back, it's a bit small and split on two levels. However, Adam explained the plans he has to open the area up, with an outdoor bar and uplighting the rock face, I suspect in the summer months this will look spectacular. So we sat in the beer garden and with the setting sun enjoyed some of Gareth's scotch eggs served with a spicy brown sauce ... there aren't many dishes I would travel miles to have, nor indeed say they are the best of their genre, but Gareth's eggs ticks both boxes. Even my wife, who normally can't stand either scotch eggs or brown sauce, absolutely adores the ones Gareth makes. After a couple of rounds of scotch eggs we went inside to the dining room. This is neatly laid out with a lounge at one end to retire to after your meal. There was one lady managing the entire restaurant (with an assistant), she handled a full restaurant with more courteous efficiency than comparable restaurants with three staff. Whatever she's being paid it's not enough. For my starter I had the duck terrine with brioche. The duck was superb, a good depth of flavour yet without being stodgy. The only thing I would say is that the amount of duck is more than the amount of brioche provided, it needed another piece of brioche (which was bought over for me). Then onto the main course, a brisket with a beautifully rich sauce, complete with seasonal vegetables. It was clear that Gareth's cooking had gone up a notch from the Pig and Whistle.Once we had finished our dinner, we sat in the lounge area enjoying the remainder of our drinks until the taxi arrived. It was a bit of a trek from where we were staying, but I would come back here without hestitation. And not just for the scotch eggs.

We arrived and decided to book a table for dinner at the hotel, the staff were exceptionally friendly, the young lad working behind the bar was very polite, knowledgeable on the beers and pleasant. The girls/women staff were also so helpful and polite, when we asked for a glass for our bottled wheat beers, she brought over a selection of glasses for us, which she didn't have to but it was very considerate as particular beer drinkers like us prefer specific glasses. The food was absolutely delicious, all of it flawless, good choice for veggies too, by far the best 3 course meal I've had overall. Partner had the honey roast pork belly, black pudding fritter and caramelised apple to start and it was cooked perfectly, and I had salt baked beets, goats cheese, toasted walnuts and watercress pesto. Then my partner had the steak which was again perfectly cooked, very juicy and a good sized portion! I had the lamb and black pudding 'tattie pot' which was new to me, but was a delicious stew, with pickled red cabbage, i didn't expect it to blow me away when I ordered it but I savoured every mouthful by the end.We finished with the sticky date pudding with hot sticky toffee sauce and salted caramel ice cream, which was a dream, moist snd delicious! And we shared the cheeseboard, which had the most delicious cheese we've ever had on it, just as a cheery on top of the fab meal. The beers were of excellent quality, especially the Lakeland Blonde, kept cool and tasted well kept.Additionally, our room was so cosy and comfy, some may say it's abit small, but we thought it was ideal for coming back to if you're going on Lakeland walks or hikes, very warm and soft bed and a big TV. Perfect for couples!! Woke up refreshed, had a beautiful fry up whilst admiring the fells next to us. 10/10, couldn't recommend it more. Thank you to the manager and staff for looking after us so well.

Went here for a birthday treat. It took several days to even get through on the 'phone to book but there was no need we were the only people eating in the restaurant. And I am not surprised. My so called 'home made' burger cost £12.95 and was served cold, while a pizza took an hour to make and serve and was a very thin poorly mad thing. All in all the food was far to expensive, we waited over an hour to get it and then it was nothing very special. Drinks are not cheap either and service was by the barman whose finger nails were dirty and who paid us little attention. NOT recommended.

We enjoyed an evening here on St George's night where there was a great folk band playing traditional musical instruments. Opting just for a snack we had the homemade scotch eggs and lamb skewers. Nice taste. And good value. Good ambient lighting with the candles on the tables. Great pint and glass of wine. The lady serving the food was excellent and she informed us that they were in the process of reestablishing the pub under new management.

We were part of a pre-booked group of 24 on Easter Sunday 2015. We had seen a menu and had pre-ordered our selections; unfortunately the menu changed on the day before and we had to alter our selection on the day. The food when it arrived had very small portions (I had a homity pie which though very nice was about 5 inches in diameter and was topped with about 5 on the vine tomatoes cooked) In this nor in any other selections were we offered any second vegetables and only after querying it we were offered, rather grudgingly, some peas. For the pie we were charged £12.50. The sweet menu arrived and out of about seven selections only three were available; again a wait ensued and when the selections arrived the portions were small, cost £6.50. We didn't bother with coffee!! I cannot comment on the price of wines but as far as I'm aware no one in the group partook. I tried to buy fruit juice but none was available and had to settle for a weak cordial. All in all what was expected to be good meal out with friends was very disappointing!

We used to use this pub most weekends between March and October and always experienced a warm welcome and great food. Pub has changed hands, food is very ordinary and there was a very long wait, despite the fact that there was only one other table occupied. We will go elsewhere for the rest of the season. What a shame!

Barmaid wanted £36. I said, "£36 for two puddings and a pint and a half?" She immediately reconsidered. "It's £29.50.". She printed me a receipt and said, "You asked for extra custard. Life isn't free, sir." I had indeed asked for extra custard, for which I had only been charged a pound. But obviously, people who query bar bills in the Lakes are regarded as the lowest form of scroungers.
