The Crown and Kitchen in East Linton had good trip advisor reviews, so we decided to stay for 1 night on our journey to eastern Scotland. Although there is no car park, there was plenty of on street unlimited parking near to the Inn. All of the staff were friendly and welcoming, and we were shown to our beautiful contemporary room by a very helpful member of staff. Rooms are next door to the bar area, and so quiet. There was a wide choice of dishes for dinner, including fish and vegetarian options. Breakfast was very good. There were fresh berries and yoghurt and a range of cereals, as well as cooked options. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, and the whole place was well cared for, light and welcoming. We will stay again when we are in the area, and can recommend it without hesitation.

We had an overnight in the guest house, bite to eat in the bar and breakfast in the morning. Our room was clean, bright and nicely decorated. Coffee machine and tea shortbread etc. Bathroom was lovely, hot shower and freestanding bath. Bed was very comfortable, good quality linen and very comfy pillows. Food in the bar was decent, we had sides of Mac cheese, fries and broccoli. Breakfast was a feast, full veggie was well cooked and tasty, Fresh fruit, yogurt and granola as a lighter option. All the staff were brilliant, friendly, professional and really made our stay top notch.

Was in Edinburgh for the day and before heading home (Berwick) I phoned up and managed to get a table for four. The young waitress was polite, we ordered three beef dinners and a child’s sausage and chips. The sausage and chips were decent but the beef dinners were appalling, Yorkshire was tiny not much veg and seriously lacking in gravy. But the worst part was the beef still being alive on the plate, not pink but raw to point where the knife couldn’t cut it. We didn’t have anyone come over to ask if everything was okay, so called the young waitress over who was apologetic and totally understood our point of view. She did ask if we’d like anything in its place but we declined. We asked for the bill and rightly the three dinners were taken off. But the biggest issue is the fact no one in a senior position came over instead leaving it to the young waitress to deal with.

Really disappointed - we went for a family lunch on a Sunday afternoon, the place was fairly quiet and our main course took about 45 mins - 1 hour to arrive. We had to send back the fish and chips because it was soggy and greasy and they brought another one the exact same. The roast was very average with what seemed like frozen yorkshire pudding. We won’t be back

I really want to love this pub as it’s such a cracking spot with lovely atmosphere and a real classic and charming feel. However our last experience left us vowing only to ever return for drinks. Genuinely can’t fault any of the staff who are attentive and friendly. We visited back in November and had a pleasant but not particularly note worthy dinner (burgers and a pure). Though the crumble was actually awful. Tasteless and very watery. Our most recent January visit was for Sunday lunch with family. some starters were ‘forgotten’ two of the same starters had different portion sizes and things left off one but not the other. Then we all decided on a Sunday roast. I’m so sorry to say it was all cold and rather uninspiring. Barely there gravy, flat stone cold Yorkshire puddings. Veg portion was so small and again, stone cold. My father in law who is a butcher said the beef was very good and I agree very tasty. It was all just a bit, lack lustre. When one goes out for a roast you at least expect it to surpass what you can achieve at home. I really hope it finds it feet with the menu as it really is a true gem of a pub.

We went here for lunch as had heard good reviews from family. Unfortunately, it wasn’t great. The kids meals were ok (apart from the ‘mushy’ peas), but the adult meals were disappointing. In particular, the roasts were very average. Small portions, soggy roast potatoes and terrible Yorkshire puds. The real disaster was the deserts. The brownies were hard, the crumble was watery and tasteless and the sticky toffee pudding was borderline inedible. The ice cream was ok and the sorbet was good. In fairness, the bar lady reduced our bill without issue, but we left feeling very let down.

Popped in here for a drink and a bite to eat as we were staying locally. Bar was great with a great choice of beer and gin and great atmosphere. Decided to stay for a bite to eat - disaster. The dining room table where we sat had spider webs all over the back wall. Had I told my wife she would have passed out, discreetly moved to another table before she noticed. I ordered battered fish and chips with mushy peas. Chips were great, fish out the freezer and mushy peas were a disgrace, did not resemble mushy peas I have ever had. Even allowing for local variations they were as dry as a bone, totally inedible. Don’t be fooled by the photo’s, place could do with a deep clean and a new chef.

We enjoyed a nice lunch at this establishment 5 years ago and were meeting up with a cousin who was enroute to the Highlands, so we looked forward to another nice meal. How wrong we were. My husband and I had fish and chips, mainly because there was little else on the menu so not much choice. We waited 45 minutes although they were not busy and when the food arrived I could not believe my eyes. Most of the chips on my plate were tiny and black and burnt. They looked like they had been floating around in the fryer for weeks and were dredged up to fill my plate. The fish was soggy and very pale and the mushy peas were completely dried out and looked like they had been around for a few days. I gave a chip to our dog and she spat it out. That's saying something! My husband's chips looked better than mine (his must have been out first) but his fish had batter that you could not cut or bite it was so hard. My cousin had a vegetarian option of a Small Meal of tomato and mozzerella which looked ok but he would not have said anything as we were paying. The staff were pleasant enough and the coffee was ok. Glad to see they had a proper espresso machine and not a 'bean to cup'. Not sure what beans they used, probably not speciality but it was good enough even by our standards. We will not be back.......

We usually stop in North Berwick when travelling to Northumberland but en route had googled gastric pubs near by and the Crown and Kitchen looked perfect ….and it was. Despite being Easter Sunday they were able to accommodate us for lunch without a booking. We both had the Pie of the Day, which was chicken and leek and was delish! The staff were friendly and the bar area was welcoming and traditional. There looked to be an extensive beer garden which we’ll be perfect in a sunny day. We had the best time of our lives when we stayed 6 months ago in Cottage #2 but this time we stayed in cottage #3... where to begin? The smoke detectors were hanging off the ceiling or missing, there were brown stains on the ceiling, it has half of the 'luxuries' cottage 2 has but is the same price, there was tea stains down the front of the cabinets, there was an issue with a double booking incident which was very confusing for all those involved including the hotel staff. we were then billed for an extra night. when i phoned to speak to reception - obviously disgruntled - i was told i have phoned in the hump and should just phone back later and that we must've caused the damages and why didn't we tell them sooner we had an issue. And he cant control other people its not his fault if someone else tried to walk into our cottage as he assured them they were cottage #4 but the customers who were confused had spoken to another member of staff who assured them they were #3.I told them i would happily pay some of the bill but not all due to all the inconveniences and incorrect bill and was told the police would be phoned. He got rather aggressive and sarky on the phone which was making my temper rise even further, instead of trying to come to a calm agreeable outcome where both parties are happy. I was told his system doesn't make mistakes only to then be told it had and he will phone me back when he has sorted it.Long story short complete and utter let down from last time, will never be returning, we were given a mobile number and they knew exactly when we would be checking in, then when settling bill they complained that we phoned them asking to have someone let my pregnant bride into the cottage because he was getting an injection at the time. However i must admit when he phoned back both himself and I had calmed down he was very polite and sincere about hoping we had a good wedding and we agreed on the payment to be made but didn't address any other issues any further. After his return call i am a lot less disgruntled but still will not be hurrying back ( which im sure they will be happy about)

The lobster thermidore was beautiful and the attention to detail with the salad/chips was lovely. The pub itself has a nice atmosphere. The food was ok although the portion sizes were quite small. The main issue is the service, which can only be described as terrible. The waitress that initially served us was extremely good but could simply not keep up with the restaurants demand which is of course not her fault. After an hour of waiting for a member of staff to come to our table for desserts we decided to call it a night. We then had to go and find a member of staff and ask for the bill. Again after no one came to our table we paid the bill and left. After just leaving the bar a member of staff came running up to us in the street telling us that our bill had not been paid! I would suggest in future that before approaching people in this manner that the actual table with the bill on it has been checked! As I explained to the lady in the street, the cash is with the bill on the table had they checked.Overall a poor experience unfortunately.

Cheesecake for dessert then cheeseboard to finish. Great beers & wines & the service was excellent. My husband and I stayed here for one Saturday night only prior to two nights on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. The gentlemen on the 'phone when I booked was excellent. We were met at the Bar by a very friendly young female member of staff who offered us bottled water and showed us to our room. It was called The Wynd and overlooked the little square at the front of the building. The room is decorated in a trendy dark grey with a massive bed, period piece of furniture, two French-style bedside cabinets, an extremely large sofa (perhaps sofa bed) and an odd IKEA wardrobe that seemed out of place. However, we did know this was a new room open to guests so I am sure they have other ideas. The ambience and service downstairs in the next door pub/restaurant was lovely. Cosy and friendly with many locals coming in and out. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a drink on the outdoor terrace and had planned to go to our room again before dinner but we enjoyed the atmosphere so sat on. We then gave our table to another family and stayed put at a table near the bar which we really enjoyed. The food was fabulous and piping hot. Nice wine too. At breakfast another couple mentioned they were on an online deal which I was sorry I did not know about (same price we paid for our room only sadly) that included dinner with their room rate. The breakfast was superb and we had a really friendly staff member at checkout. All in all, a really lovely stay and we would love to return one day. A really friendly place.

Or first visit to this pub. We slipped in for a couple of drinks prior to dinner at my mother's house in East Linton. There was only one cask ale available which was a bit of a disappointment for me personally as I prefer cask to craft/keg most of the time. You probably won't be surprised to hear that I like my old town pubs to be cosy, traditional and 'pubby' too. The Crown is not this. What it is is a light and airily modern bar with cheery staff and a great array of drinks. It has attracted a youngish up-market crowd of amiable coves and boozers and prompted my wife to say that this is exactly how she likes her pubs to be. It's great. Whilst not entirely to my own taste, I can see that The Crown and Kitchen is performing an important role for the community and I can't wait for the next opportunity to sample their excellent IPA.

Chatting to the friendly locals on the Saturday night made it even more enjoyable. Will definitely be back.

Some of my family members had lunch here (my wife and I had been before. This is a great place with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Excellent lunch menu and specials of the day too. We were very well looked after by the attentive staff. I would highly recommend The Crown and Kitchen - the deal for over 60s at 30%! was fantastic. We all ate very well and were very happy.

One of our party required gluten free food and was delighted to find plenty of choice on the menu. Others found the menu offered some unusual choices eg the vegetarian skirlie dumplings which were very tasty and highly recommended.

Went the Friday before Valentines on a Groupon Deal stayed in the Clocktower Room which was very big and the decor was very modern bed amazingly comfortable (and im very fussy) and the Bathroom had a (Roll top Bath) (wish we had stayed longer so I could try the bath) The Shower very big and powerful was the best i have ever tried the place was a so luxurious complete with candles to give that extra romantic touch and even wine glasses in the room as well as tea tunnocks teacakes and a coffee machine and of course toiletries. The accommodation consists of 4 rooms 3 with ensuites and one has a separate private bathroom they are actually next door to the pub and our room overlooked the clocktower and village square hence the name there was a separate large private lounge area for guests the only downfall is that there were quite few stairs up so im not sure a person who has a mobility problem or would be able to access the rooms the staff were excellent an nothing was to much trouble the food was excellent and cocktails even more so the young lady who served us breakfast was a delight and had a lovely chat whilst waiting the breakfast very nice and a good sized portion I had the Waffles and Bacon and my husband a Scottish cooked breakfast even we didnt need food all day this place is a wee gem and would recommend that you dont take my word but try it for yourselfs excellent night away lovely wee village

We recently had Sunday Lunch at this hotel, and it left a lot, an awful lot, to be desired! My wife had the roast beef, which was old and tough. It was served with roast potatoes which were old, tasteless and looked liked they had come from a frozen bag ,Aunt Betty's, although in saying that we sometimes use Aunt Betty's at home, and they are quite good. The Yorkshire Pudding was like a flat pancake (let's hope there were no Yorkshire people in. I had a Salmon Steak, which was a bit dry, but edible, not like the roast beef. This was also served with Roast Potatoes and Yorkshire Pudding! My son returned my wife's hardly eaten lunch, and suggested they look for a different chef!

We went with the family as a party of 6, including two children, for lunch, after The New Year. The restaurant/pub is friendly, welcoming and warm, with log fires in each room. Lunch was a pleasure with a vairied menu, together with Children's menus and specialities of the day. The staff was friendly, helpful and flexible - allowing shared adult dishes/starters between the children and facilitating a cut-down adult adult main course for one of the children, instead of thechildren's menu option. What was on offer varied between traditional 'pub grub' (Fish and chips etc) to quite imaginative venison or fish dishes all well presented and by the look of the paltes at the end, very appreciated - the plates were empty! For myself I enjoyed a very pleasnt cold shin of beef (potted) with good bread starter, followed by a to be recommended, smoked haddock on celeriac mash, with spinach, accompanied by a crispy boiled egg and a pleasant sauce. Desserts were very popular and the plum and apple crumble with custard and ice cream (my choice) was beautiful. The wines and beers (the latter in our case, non-alcoholic) were good. The staff were attentive and very helpful and lunch was allowed to be a leisurely affair, without being rushed in any way. The restaurant was busy with several young families and it seems popular with parents with small children and I have to say that the behaviour levels of all the children was exemplary and in no way detracted from a pleasant experience. The restaurant is well worth a visit and I can recommend it for good food - not spectacular or dramtic, but imaginative, if you want something slightly off piste, or traditional if you so desire. At a cost of £185 all told for six healthy eaters, including drinks and coffees, it represents good value all round and I would recommend it both for food and atmosphere.

Dropped in recently for lunch with a friend. What an absolute gem of a place! Staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was outstanding. I had a real job deciding what to have but I'm glad I chose the stovies (if you don't know what this is, look it up). As you may know this is most typically a Scottish home cooked dish and I guess most people are going to say it'll never be as good as Mum used to make. I'd agree with that but in the 40+ years since I left home this is by far the closest anyone's ever got, Trust me, I really can't give any higher recommendation. And you get 30% off if you're over 60! Best find in a very very long time.

First time visit for a special occasion & it proved the perfect choice in every way. We were in the clock tower room which was lovely & the bathroom was a delight with the best shower in a hotel ever. We somehow managed 3 courses each for our evening meal in the restaurant & each course was delicious, well presented & tasty. We then enjoyed a few cocktails in the busy bar. Breakfast in the morning was exceptional & cooked to order. We'd like to say a special thanks to all the staff who were so friendly & helpful : from Col who greeted us warmly on our arrival, our lovely waitress on her first shift ,the friendly bar staff to the girl who served breakfast.

We had a superb dinner in this restaurant. We were greeted in a friendly way and shown to our table in a very pleasant room with the tables attractively set up. The menu looked very attractive, particularly the starters which made it a very difficult choice. The Mackerel Pate or the Goats Cheese and Fig Salad - a difficult choice but I couldn't have done any better with the Goats Cheese salad which was as attractive in appearance as it was delicious to eat. Again the main courses all looked good. There was Fish and Chips, Cod Loin, Swordfish, two different steaks etc. The Ribeye Steak with chips, mushrooms, tomatoes and a choice of sauces was delicious, tender and done just the way I like it. Despite these two courses being top quality, I think the star of the meal was the chocolate mousse - dark chocolate ice cream, shortbread pieces and milk chocolate mousse. The house wine was Cabernet Sauvignon which was very reasonably priced at £3.10 for a small glass. Service was good, the staff were attentive and I thought it was a truly outstanding meal which I'll remember for a long time. I'd be very disappointed if, when I go back, they don't have the chocolate mousse on the menu!

Last time we were there we were asked to leave after half an hour with the excuse that the table we were using was booked. When we were seated they did not mention anything about the table being booked. The place was completely empty and they could have asked us to move to another table. I think the real reason was because we were not discussing in English. Great disappointment.

Staff friendly and attentive on arrival. The menu seems to have a huge choice of dishes but some of them are very poorly thought out and executed. In terms of a healthy, balanced meal which is tasty and better than something you would make at home, failed miserably. I chose ox cheek terrine to start. The terrine was nicely presented but lacked any flavour - it really could have been any meat. It came with a mixed salad containing too many different things and lots of raw onion - much too strong for what should have been a delicate leafy salad to enhance the flavour of the meat.

Visited on a Monday evening for dinner. Waited about 10-15 minutes before anyone even spoke to us. Asked if we wanted to eat in the pub or restaurant, we decided on the restaurant, so we were taken through and given a table, only 1 other table (of 6) dining. Menu very minimalistic. Starters arrived after 10 mins, again very minimalistic, but then....... after 35 mins staff obviously noticed that we did not have our mains , attempted to pacify us with “would you like more drinks”, to which I replied “No, we would like our food!”, but at least another 10 minutes later, food arrived (it was only steaks). Very disappointed

Had a meal with friends here last night. Have visited before and was keen to go back. However, we were not all able to have the main we ordered as they had run out. Not all the mains came out at the same time, slow to clear tables and take desert orders. Ended up taking the bill to the bar as no one came to get payment. Pity as we had been looking forward to our night out.

Me and my partner dropped in for a quick drink. Not great selection, no Stella Artois and only Magners cider so opted for a French martini (£4) and a pint of Tennents (£3.75). Bar staff were very friendly and welcoming. Was a selection of soars games available. The beer garden is lovely, plenty of picnic tables and plants. Dogs are welcome and there were a couple milling around. If in the area for longer would definitely go back.

Went along to the Wednesday evening steak night. Menu not clearly stating what was on offer with the steaks - which no longer offer chicken and pork as an alternative to beef. Also the menu steaks are not the same as the Steak night specials - no mushrooms and no vine tomatoes. Poorly explained! Ribeye is a £3 supplement and sauces also an extra £3. The basic cost has risen from £25 to £28.

We visited Lucas on Sun 25 Aug and 30 Aug frequently attend here on both occasions I had to return my main course as they were both barely warm 1 was pizza the other mushroom pasta the waitress was apologetic and said this would get heated up in the microwave. Another couple who were sitting at the next table had to wait an eternity for their meals we had our main course & our dessert before the couples meal arrived as they had already asked waitress where it was and was told kitchen was busy the couple had been more than patient. I am unsure if the chef has been changed the food seems to be not to the usual standard. Not once has the waitresses when having your meal if everything is ok! This should come as standard.. very disappointed. Therefore after another disappointing visit today it will be sone considerable tine or not at all when we will be back.
