Steampunk Coffee in East Lothian

Great hot chocolate, happy staff, funky artwork by Ali Blevins plus vinyl, retro sounds and more seats upstairs. Super-quick service. Well priced. Perfect.

Delicious coffee and cakes actually made in the kitchen upstairs. Loved sitting by the big stove on a miserable day in February. We left laden with freshly ground coffee roasted on the premises Little gem in NB not to be missed

Haven’t been hear in a few years, and it has changed quite a bit in the interim. The upstairs area is gone, seems to be a music shop if I’m not mistaken. So you’re now left with only the downstairs area for sitting/eating, and I didn’t count seats but the tables seem fewer than before so it won’t take much to be standing room only. Still today was pretty cold / quiet overall so we had no trouble. Dog lovers are welcome here also which is a plus. My other half works (in part) as a barista in a London bakery, and the verdict on Steampunk coffee was middling. Not bad, but not great either. You also don’t get a choice in size, so you pay top London prices eg £3.40 for a regular size average tasting latte. Hot chocolate meanwhile does come with different size options. Weird huh. Our son is want too bowled over by his. I think the Medium size was £3.40 also. Interiors are interesting (and were even better when they utilised the upstairs area. Steampunk support local artists, showcasing works on their walls, which is a great gesture. Not tried other coffee spots in North Berwick, so can’t compare. If you are in the area it’s worth dropping by to check it out and admire the art whilst sipping a hot drink.

Really poor experience. Coffee is perfectly ok, but others do it better, and the croissant was basically raw. The place was dirty and cold. All in all it was a miss for me.

Our first visit to Steampunk, loved the setting and was dog friendly. Vegan option for cake which was very welcome. Coffee was good but not hot enough (I know this is a common theme with baristas) but my hot chocolate wasn't over hot either.......all the same we will be back next time we visit. The atmosphere was cosy and I loved the selection of coffee goods on sale.

Love this place. Really chilled atmosphere with excellent coffee and great cakes. The mocha is lovely as was the granola bar.

The coffee is amazing that's true BUT its not the best place if you have young kids/babies. No kid/baby friendly food or drink, no highchairs, no baby changing facilities. Great if you are a hipster with a laptop or a dog walker though. *(no option to say visited with you family so had to select teen option)

Very cool place with cool campervan outside and bike on wall etc. Sadly disappointed that they serve no food beyond cake and the place was very cold, I had to keep my coat on. Despite this though the coffee and vegan cake was amazing so if you just turn up your heating and offer a few filled rolls / soups then I’d be back!

I reaally loved ita ss they had food and wayer like not just cold water like hot browny water. and i was stuned as it was quit tasty amd it didn't buirn my mouf like kettle watwr dose. I reccomd this place to noobs and fortnite biginners but sweats and pro like mw should be dyning and that z\anzibar [plaace down da road. hashtag poggers coolbeamns fortnite sigma revioew. Photos on here completely misleading, serving counter now just a small thing and pretty basic seating only. None of the savoury options in photos, just coffee and a small selection of pre made (tiny, flat) cakes and cookies, with a stale one of each displayed to illustrate and choose from. And off-hand staff. Never been more disappointed with the reality of a coffee shop v. all the hype. Recommend not even trying to find this place but going to Bostock on the main high street instead. Much better, though not difficult to be.

We popped in here (based on a recommendation) for a takeout latte and hot spiced apple enroute to our boat trip around bass rock - and we weren’t disappointed. Lovely staff, good range of drinks and bakes and super welcoming of our dog too! Would recommend!

ive seen it all now , they weigh the scoop first then scoop the coffee then weigh it again measuring to the correct weight , then then screw on a thing to compact it then make the coffee then clean spout pour mlk in then its like pouring the milk in to make it nice ,as time slowly goes by and ques from , then you get to drink it , if you want a cake be early ,yes the coffee is good but to 99 per cent of folk its just a coffee inside i dont know what it is but everyones sitting with a laptop , there wasnt many seats and chairs this year so it fills up and hopefully those cyclists arent in taking up a seat hogging the place or a load of women and prams meeting for a cacle , oh and i did mention this to them , the place could do with a good cleaning ,shrubbery and a lick of paint but we do enjoy a coffee each day we pass , best going in the afternoon if you want peace

My favourite coffee place on the east coast. Have been going here for years on my visits. Beautiful location and awesome team with great ethos. Always have steampunk on rotation in my coffee cupboard at home. Delicious coffee and tasty sweet treats.

Steampunk, probably like so many places, have tried very hard in difficult times to provide some kind of cafe service. And they have succeeded in the main. Their coffee is simply excellent. It is worth every penny. Long may they continue.

Came here kind of by accident when I was dropped in North Berwick on a bus tour from Edinburgh, and this café really made my day!!! Also an on-site roastery that makes delicious single origin roasts. Very spacious yet cosy atmosphere inside, and also outdoor...

Love their coffee and chilling outside but boy, their prices are high! It would be great if they offered a little more on the menu. Despite this a nice sot to stop and get your caffeine fix😋

We have been regular visitors here since it first opened and used to love coming here, however we were extremely disappointed today. Staff were unhelpful and unfriendly, the coffee was poor and not warm. Poor atmosphere. We won’t be back and sadly wouldn’t recommend.

Stopped in whilst on my bike. Amazing coffee. Flat white and espresso. Staff were friendly and helpful. Filled up my bottles. Some good sweet treats available as well. Would definitely recommend and will be back!

This not your usual coffee stop as the decor was quirky and a one off. Additionally the coffee was superb and we had a lovely seat outside.

Had read good things so my level of expectation was high. Aesthetically the place was great, exactly as expected, however the coffee was bitter and worse still lukewarm. Luke warm is a good way to describe the reception and customer service too. Staff fell short...

A small and quaint coffee stop. Limited seating indoors but plenty of space outdoors. Coffee was good, although not quiet as hot as some we sampled on our recent tour. Interesting "steampunk" machines to keep the conversations flowing.

This review is based on pop up in Edinburgh old Laura Ashley. Had always wanted to try this and last time in North berwick I did not make it. I need to say.....hated the coffee today. I never leave coffee and had to leave.V disappointed.

Disappointing visit today..warm coffee..they had cake but couldn't see it..cold room..not welcoming by the staff..toilets un clean (cobwebs) We have always been regular visitors and love to support local businesses but today the funky vibes and quirky environment had disappeared.

Bohemian interior, it looks like they have gone for the steampunk look… a little too much. Service was polite and quick but customers hogging tables on laptops and reading books so a dire shortage of seats and tables. Not one of them offered their spare...

Delicious coffee that put a pep in my step after a rough week and the brownies are lush. The neighbours are quiet too so highly recommend a visit if your in North Berwick.

Visited the steampunk coffee and found service good and coffee and hot chocolates also good. Would highly recommend the place. Drinks and food and not eaten in at this time so are more of a takeaway or sitting in the seating area which is fine...

The Banana Cake we had along with the coffee was every bit a treat. I would recommend this place to visit if you are in North Berwick.

The size of the cups were unreal for the money! Tiny. Very expensive coffee! Much better value in other places round north Berwick. Staff were friendly though.

Over priced coffee as quality was very poor no taste really, it was a small paper cup which I couldn’t finish, had it been drinkable I would have been disappointed by the measly size for the extortionate cost.

Takeaway from here as Covid regs allowing only outdoors seating , though apparently you can work upstairs with your laptop. Coffee was soòoooooo good that I went back to buy some coffee beans which were ground for filter . Had some banana cake too ,...

Called for coffee and thoroughly enjoyed it, quite a distinct liquorice flavour. Returned a couple of days later as we were staying locally and enjoyed it so much. Friendly and efficient service. Would highly recommend.

Two days ago bought an oat milk latte to take away and it was the best I’ve ever had. The coffee tasted beautiful and it was so creamy!! Will definitely be going back for some more. Also - the Brownie is incredible.

Visited with my husband & stepson for a coffee since they have safely opened for takeaway. I have been following them on Instagram and really impressed by their ethics so was keen to support this local business - esp as the owner has been kind...

We went in for a takeaway coffee today, I asked for a decaff coffee and when the server handed it over, he announced the coffee sarcastically (not sure why?) I asked him it was decaff and he said No, I said I can’t drink caffeinated coffee, then I don’t know what happened as there was no apology and no communication from him.Fast forward to the second coffee getting plonked down in front of me, I asked it was decaff and which point he seemed to explode. There were a few lines coming out of his mouth, but I couldn’t believe the rudeness of him and couldn’t hear everything due to his facemask. I did hear something along the lines of ‘what is it with people coming out of lockdown’ I asked what he meant by this remark and he stated, ‘you were rude’. What? Rude for asking for my coffee to be made a certain way for health reasons, rude for accepting that I wasn’t allowed to pour my own milk into my coffee (and btw they didn’t ask if I wanted dairy-free which would have been great). When I tried to speak with him about this, he shouted over me, calling out the next customer order and totally ignored what I tried to say.Very strange Goddamn rude behaviour, why are these people in a customer-facing role if they can’t be fagged to be nice to customers? I have supported Steampunk for years, but this is the last. I recommend you get rid of that guy if you want to keep your customers!BTW Pret a Manger have learned lessons and now label all their coffee cups with a sticker that clearly states ‘decaff’ as soon as it's ordered. Great idea as it gives customers like me comfort that it’s decaff and confirmation that you’ve actually listened to my request. I will never drink Steampunk coffee again.

Pity Corona Virus has robbed us of The Steampunk Coffee House. Best place in North Berwick for coffee and lunch. The staff are great and the place is unique in design. An interior designers dream come to reality.

Dropped in here and had some coffee with a cheese toastie and a Raspberry and white chocolate brownie. Only one word to describe this - Excellent. We will be back. By the way the staff were great.

Industrial setting, wide selection of vegan sweet treats and savouries, dog friendly and still the absolute best coffee I have ever had!

Was recommended to go here and was disappointed with the service. Travelling from Canada and expected a warm/ decent Scottish welcome. First girl I see, who worked there, I said hi to her and she ignored me. The male employee working was friendly. Then my husband and I said thank you when they were clearing dishes for us and no response from the girl, also when we left we turned and both said thank you and both girls ignored us. Left a bitter taste after a good coffee.

You think you’ve tried all the cheese toasties going, from your travels and ventures across the world, then you land here. Cheesy joy in a sandwich! And the coffee is wonderful 🙌🏼

Really well designed place. Friendly staff. Up to date decor and cool vibe. As it was rammed, we were lucky to get a table. Dog friendly downstairs. Coffee is decent (which you’d expect as they brew it on site) and carrot cake was up to standard. Enjoyed seeing all of the homemade and seasonal things on the menu. Would pop in again.

The coffee here is the best, but unfortunately the servings are small and the chairs here are very uncomfortable. They have gone for the shabby chic look, but a bit of foam on these chairs wouldn't go amiss! Also, if you're a little hard of hearing, it will be a problem in this cafe as it is very echoey and noisy if there are lots of people there.

Have been to Steampunk on many occasions for early morning coffee. While the coffee is the priority here, for me, the barn feel to the place, the log fire on a cold day and excellent staff all make this a must to visit for coffee. I used to enjoy the odd tables and chairs that have now been replaced by more modern tables etc, but I understand why they were updated. It is very popular and can get busy; be early. Croissants, cinnamon buns and granola bars are excellent too. All made on site. Great place. Love it.

Recent visit. Staff up there own backside. Full of themselves getting a bit grubby. Just wanted ordinary coffees but was looked at as tho I was from the moon. No more steampunk for us. So precocious

Loved Steampunk coffee when I lived in Edinburgh. I always made sure to visit when I went to North Berwick. Loved the coffee and atmosphere, upstairs has a view of a beautiful graveyard - very charming! Was not a huge fan of the food but they had good vegan options.

What a great asset to north berwick - great staff / great coffee and food. Somewhat hard to believe a venue this big doesn’t have baby changing in its large bathrooms or even a single highchair.

I have visited this place many times and the food is good, rooms look funky if a bit cold and the coffee is usually good. Today my coffee was undrinkable, table sticky, room cold and my husbands croissant was served flattened within an inch of its life -weird! Disappointing.

Lovely, quirky little coffee house with an upstairs too. The coffee was excellent and I had a gorgeous orange cake which was moist and light. Great decor and love that they allow dogs downstairs.

Steampunk is a great place for a good coffee and offers good cakes and snacks. Funky decor inside and great toilets. The soups are good and staff are friendly.

Visited here for a morning coffee with my husband and baby son - very friendly and accommodating staff and nice food and coffee. Highly recommend. The server was very helpful with food allergy queries and also offered to loan towels for us to change our son since they didn't have a dedicated baby change. Very impressed with the service.

Stopped here for lunch, dog friendly indoors and out and we chose to sit outdoors, in a sort of courtyard as it was sunny.Enjoyed our cheese toastie which had some sort of chilli addition - very tasty! Decor is quite quirky, do visit the loos!!

We ordered the bagel with chocolate hazelnut spread and a cream cheese brownie...they were sooo tasty. The flavour of the coffee was really nice (we love a good coffee). I highly recommend.

We always come here for coffee in North Berwick. The coffee is amazing and so is the hot chocolate. I had vegan banana bread which was incredible and my family had other cakes which they raved about. They always have a good range of foods for all dietary requirements, which is so handy. The staff are always super keen to help and with a pleasant and positive attitude. Dogs are welcome. Love this place.

Can't recommend Steampunk enough. Just great coffee roasted in a Probart on site, not like the chains who do very good coffee these days, just a whole lot better. Freshly cooked snack both savoury & sweet. Loved the toast topped with mushrooms, pesto, pine kernels & parmesan shavings. We ate outside but could have eaten inside either downstairs or on the mezzanine. Wish this was our local.

I visited Stempunk Coffee just a couple of weeks ago with my wife nd the experience was pleasant. It is one of this places where the coffee is good and the local atmosphere made the rest. We discovered this place via TripAdvisor and we very much enjoyed sitting outside in a warm-ish day in a table with mainly just local adults sharing the terrace with us. The place is dog friendly too and it seems to be popular with the cycling community as there were two good size groups of cyclist enjoying different beverages and what looked like nice cakes and pastries.

Friendly service, industrial decoration, delicious cakes. Amazing coffee. Little bit pricey, but worth it!

Lovely staff, cool decor and most importantly the nicest coffee I've had in a long long time. The long black was so rich and rounded it almost tasted like chocolate. Absolute dream.

We were very impressed with the coffee at this cafe. It is a little tucked away, behind the main shopping street, but is well worth investigating. The cafe is spacious with plenty of seating upstairs as well as downstairs and outside. I loved the pipes that were used for the water tap, all in a circle to emphasise the steam theme. Staff were very friendly.

The coffee is incredible, the prices are very reasonable. The cookies are absolutely fantastic. God atmosphere.

I have been visiting steampunk since it opened. It’s a great excuse for a day trip to North Berwick and walk along the beach, followed up with THE best coffee you can get.

We regularly come to steampunk when in North Berwick. The coffee.is always great and the brownies and other cakes are delicious. The courtyard outside is a real suntrap on a sunny day and is a great place to sit outside and enjoy cake and a coffee. We usually have our dogs with us and they are welcome both outside and downstairs inside the coffee shop which adds to the appeal. Overall highly recommended.

Was recommended this cafe by a friend, and it lived up to its expectations. We had coffees & cakes in this quirky cafe that is worth a visit.

Nice surroundings but rather bland & basic cheese toastie for £5 arrived with no garnish ....no nothing. Request for sauces met with indifference.... only relish available was from staff informing me of this.... Verdict : disappointing & rather pleased with itself

Loved this place - dogs accepted, vegan stuff to eat and excellent coffee. Sat upstairs on a wobbly old chair at a tired old table and loved every minute!

Nice coffee shop and restaurant but it does get very busy. There is plenty of chairs and tables and you can sit and watch the staff fulfilling orders.

I went in to buy coffee for a gift - asked for assistance with coffee choice. Every question I asked got a 'don't know ' answer - this was not helpful as this is suppose to be their area of expertise !!! will be going to the local deli in future.

This is a great example of how to take a former industrial building and turn it into a cool, creative cafe. The food offering is simple (soup, bagels, toasties and cakes) but everything is good quality and very fresh. The coffee is all roasted at the venue and just brilliant. There are two levels for seating (with lots of room upstairs) and you can get coffee to go. Lastly, it's dog friendly - which makes a pleasant change!

Visiting North Berwick and met up with our daughter and her dog. Streampunk is conveniently located just off the Main Street in the heart of the town. Lovely tomato and cashew soup with fresh artisan bread and a delicious cheese toastie. Good customer welcome and prompt service to our outside table. Went back for a carry out of tray bakes with the granola slice especially good. Would recommend and definitely go back here again.

Great coffee, good choice of food (2 cakes suitable for vegans, AND plant milks - yay!) and friendly fast service. Really nice and worth seeking out as it's just off the main street.

One of the places to go in North Berwick this restaurant is quirky, serves great coffee and good food and the loft tables and courtyard stood out. Seen better views than the ancient cemetery from the courtyard but it was very Marcus Aurelius and encouraged me to consider some of his philosophies.

The venue itself is quite cool and the upstairs stove was great on a cold day outside.

Lovely lunch in this fabulous place. Excellent vegan options, soup was delicious & piping hot, aubergine & tomato, not a combination I would have thought of but will definitely be making that myself. The bagel with vegan cheese & roasted veg was very tasty indeed.

Lovely funky place with a great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staff, gorgeous food, brilliant views, a real fire, and quite literally the best coffee I've ever had. There was a great selection of imaginative vegetarian and vegan rolls, sandwiches and baked goods. I love soup but rarely order it when eating out, because almost invariably it is bland and/or over-salted. Today's soup was lentil and coconut which, again, I would normally stay away from because, although I love coconut in savoury dishes, they can be cloyingly rich. This soup was perfectly judged: big flavour with just a touch of coconut. How could lentil and coconut taste light and refreshing rather than heavy and rib-sticking? It must be because the chef who made it is a genius. The baked goods - we bought too many - were bold and richly chocolately but not very sweet: perfection!

This is a unique coffe experience. Also try the great food made on the premises. In the summer a great area to sit outdoors and enjoy Steampunk’s fine coffee !

Popped in for a coffee and light lunch. Delighted with the coffee which was excellent and the soup and toasted sandwich arrived promptly and were very tasty. Busy place and obviously a popular pitstop fro cyclists. A much needed piece of the 21st Century in North Berwick.

Coffee is excellent., cake was very tasty. There appears to be as many dogs in the coffee shop as humans. As I have a dog allergy it is not great , as the area is also used to roast coffee beans not a good idea to have dogs in the area of food and beverage preparation.

I came in at lunchtime on a miserably wet day and was thoroughly cheered up by a filling soup which came with a savoury scone. I then a cappuccino and an excellent flapjack. It's not cheap, but it's not that expensive for good quality food which has a vegetarian/vegan vibe. Another customer came in with two very wet dogs, who were given old coffee sacks to lie on - for their comfort, not the cafe's floors.

Limited choice of food / drink, mostly aimed at vegetarian and vegans. The coffee is roasted in the premises and was nice. This place is OK if you like something a bit 'hippy' but not ideal for normal families on a budget.
