The Cross Inn in Caerphilly

Visited the Cross Inn with my brother for lunch. It was the second day of reopening and it showed with no hygiene rating. there was a wedding party in the lounge so had to eat in the bar which was no problem, the bar wasn't very clean the toilets didn't have any toilet roll. We ordered the Steak pie and mash with veg was told the gravy was extra. We got instant mash and side salad, my brother who as been a chef for 30 years asked about the veg and told them that the gravy was water and granules, he refused to pay the extra. The waitress said she would get some peas ordered but we refused as we would have eaten the rest before it arrived. The only thing nice was the pie loads of meat and enough gravy. We have eaten there a year ago with others of our family which prompted us to return. This as changed our minds.

Visited this very well known valley pub earlier this year! Quite a welcome change from the horrible Harp Inn, where I had frequented some months before The last time I had visited this pub, was about 20 years ago when I lived in Penpedairheol. Having moved back to the area after living in Cardiff, thought that a visit to sample the food and spend some time alone would be good. I wasn’t wrong. The Cross Inn is still a pleasant pub to visit, with good surroundings. The bar area was very tidy, and although not busy, still had a friendly air, with great bar staff. The lounge area is nice, well seated and comfortable Nicely decorated. I ordered steak and chips, rare steak. This was done to perfection. The onion rings were extremely pleasing. One criticism, and that was the time it took to receive the meal once ordered. It was above an average waiting time. This was the only flaw, in what was a good night. It will not be another 20 years before visiting again. A BIG WELL DONE!!

3 course meal for 14 , very good. Good hole cooked food served in a timely manor. Recommend. The roast dinner is excellent. Good home atmosphere pub.

it was a family birday meal food was good service was great staff were great will defo visit again the place was lovley and clean and the seating was nice and priviate.

16 of us ate Sunday lunch here for my son’s 18th birthday last week. The staff were amazing and the food was tasty. They couldn’t have been more accommodating, allowing me to decorate in advance and bring a cake. I’ve eaten here before and the standard was the same for 3 people and 16. If you’re looking for somewhere to eat on a Sunday, this is the place.

Visited here for some ‘pub grub’ after previous visits have been 100%. However this was not the case today. Ordered lasagne for main and couldn’t eat it. Dry, no sauce and microwaved as top was boiling and middle was cold. (Took one bite) Chips on both meals were greasy and cold, onion rings were ok however the side of garlic bread was dreadful- wouldn’t return. After telling the waitress who didn’t offer anything and only gave a half hearted apology, we went to pay. After paying the lady asked how our meal was... after explaining again that I didn’t eat it, the was an offer of “if you had said something, I would have given you another”. No one came to see how we were getting on when we were eating. I could understand if the pub was busy however there were 3 tables eating. I wouldn’t recommend eating here.

one off the worse places i have been for a meal in a long time ,the place was as cold as the food the chips looked like they had the potatoe sucked out off them ,i had preorderd a rib eye steak it was as tough as old boots the peas where hard and cold ,not a place i will return to !!!!

I am staying nearby for a week and The Cross Inn was recommended as a place to go. We were not disappointed. The girl behind the bar was brilliant. She has a delightful personality and as the only person behind the bar was kept busy. The meal was excellent. A medium rump steak was ordered and it was cooked to perfection. Also we had chicken and chorizo pie. The portions are so generous that only 1 pudding was ordered. Cinnamon waffle dessert. Definitely a pub to return to. Thank you for a good value for money meal.

Went to The Cross Inn this evening as a party of 4 for a birthday meal. They were quite busy when we arrived, with another party of 16 or more, who were also celebrating a birthday. The staff although a bit rushed, were still very friendly and had time for a chat, while taking our orders and service was very good. The menu was quite varied with good choice from starters to desserts. The food was also very good and decent portions, which is always a good thing for me, as I love my food lol. I know everyone’s tastes and expectations are different, but in my opinion, I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes going out to eat, to visit The Cross Inn. G White

We come here quite regular. Staff are always friendly. Nice food. We alway order the same starters and mains when we come by now they all ready know what we want.

Just had a 28 oz mixed grill and it was absolute perfect ! Everything was cooked superb,My other half had a gammon and it was cooked to her exact liking ! Staff very friendly and a lovely log fire burning in the background! 100% recommend to anyone. Will definitely be going back.

Had a lovely family meal here, the food was brilliant we couldn’t fault it, the young girl on the bar was very friendly and couldn’t help us enough, nothing was a problem! We will definitely be returning soon! Thanks again for a lovely warming visit!

Came for a valentines meal! The young girl on the bar was extremely helpful with my fussy boyfriend when discussing lager. Will deffinitely be back!

Food is amazing and the staff are very helpfull and polite..I eat here alot it's my favourite place to eat..I bring all my friends and family here..defiantly worth going here

Visited The Cross for a family meal, food was excellent. We were served by Lucy, she was lovely and very friendly and welcoming. Landlady was also lovely. Cosy, clean pub with great food and staff. We will definitely be back!!

I've had quite a few meals up here like the Cabonara, T-Bone Steak, Prawn Cocktail and loads more. I've never been disappointed. The T-Bone Steak was both times cooked to perfection, with fresh salad and freshly cut potatoes which they turned into chips for me. The bar staff are brilliant also, I asked if they served a certain type of wine but they said no but then said they had a replacement, which I also loved. Would highly recommend, also they open to dogs which all the dogs are soo adorable and friendly. Such a brilliant stop-off place, the new owners have certainly maintained the new area.

My wife and I went to the cross for a mixed grill as in the past they have been ok, unfortunately this time the food was not of a good standard as it was served Luke warm so we complained and sent the food back, which normally would be ok , but the attitude of the staff was so disparaging there was no appolagie any way we sat waiting and waiting for our food, and when I asked how long it would be they said they had to get there orders out first.

Called in for a bar meal as it was one of my sisters birthday. To say I was disgusted is putting it mildly! Freezing cold in there, no lights on when we walked in! Asked for menus- given to me reluctantly! We chose our meals & went to the bar to order- customer service big fat zero! No change in the til. Meal came - another trip to the bar to request cutlery - all the while the huffing & puffing carried on! Now for the meal! Shocking doesn't begin to describe it- caJun chicken (gave itself up) faggots peas & chips- ditto, chicken in cheese & leek sauce- ditto!! Obviously this food was left from (easily) the day before!! The next part of the scenario was an even bigger joke - did we want dessert as the kitchen was closing "no thanks but we'll have coffee please" coffee machines broken!! OMG what a disappointment, this pub used to be one of the best in the area! If it hadn't been my sisters birtday heads would have rolled but I didn't want to ruin her day - that's a laugh it was a treat for her birthday & her favourite place as she had her engagement party there!definitely off my Christmas card list!! Don't waste your money folks!!

Never do negative reviews but this has really annoyed me. Arrived at the Cross Inn at 1pm for a cheap and cheerful birthday lunch with my sisters. Sticky tables, no heating (it was rainy and quite cold) and very unenthusiastic bar staff. The food was unremarkable and not very fresh, and when we tried to order a coffee at the end of our meal (mainly to warm up!) we were told the coffee machine was broken. This was after we;d been asked if we would be ordering desserts as the kitchen was closing. We then decided to finish our drinks and leave as the staff were making it quite clear that they wanted us to go (lots of huffing & puffing, clattering etc) I've always loved the Cross and I was bitterly disappointed in the service, the food and the fact that the staff couldn't even be bothered to turn the heating on or stick a log on the fire! I've never felt so unwelcome anywhere in my life. I've never seen the place empty before and now I know why. Awful experience.

This used to be my favourite place to go while visiting friends but my last visit was the worse ever, new owners rude, service terrible one of the waiters running up and down the stairs 3 times to tell us that what we had ordered wasn't available, when our orders finally came one was missing when we asked how long it would be the waiter went away only to come back with a desert so 4 of us were eating our mains while the other had no choice but to eat her desert before her starter. Shocking never seen such a lovely little pub been run down so quickly .

Me and few friends, all local, were having a few drinks and while looking for English mustard got accused by the landlord of stealing them. After saying we were going too be staying for food and that is why i was looking at what sauces they had she just made some arrogant basically i don't care if you're going too eat here or not comment,we quickly left... erm never again, at least not while she is running the place into the ground. Used too be extremely busy lively pub but has gone total opposite way, the resaons are pretty obvious why.

New chef started brilliant steaks and freshly made steak and ale pie and freshly battered cod with real chips. Also have a lovely garden.

Food portion has halved in size to what is normally served but same price charged. Daughters meal was not what we asked for. food was not as advertised on menu and sons food was like rubber. Will not be going back. Waste of money!!!!!!!!!

Having visited with my family today it was byfar the worse customer service I have ever experienced. While it is understandable she was annoyed her staff had not turned up it was totally unacceptable or professional to be so abrupt and rude to paying customers huffing and puffing and shouting out she wanted to scream!! We left our meals barely eaten as the atmosphere was non existent and the food well below par. Will never return again.

A rude landlord, food, well to call it food would be an insult to real food, and please try not to complain because they look at you as if you were sent by the government to steal their money. NO feedback is welcome and it gets a little intimidating when you try and complain. My advice is to keep driving till you reach a civilized pub

One of our favourite places for a lunchtime meal with friends. It never fails to deliver on the quality or quantity of the food, and there is a fair selection of beers and other drinks. My particular favourite is the gammon steak.

A very cold day booked restaurant , but the wind blowing off sea making it very cold. The staff couldn’t be more helpful and advised us to sit in a very cosy corner in the bar

Its been a few years since I last visited this pub and last nights meal was beautiful, we called in last minute, staff were very friendly and welcoming in this cosy oldie worldly pub. We choose cod and chips which was amazing, the chips were proper handmade ones not the frozen rubbish you normally get in places then the battered cod was cooked to perfection, batter so light and crispy it was the nicest I've had in months. Portions massive and presentation beautiful... well done Cross Inn will definitely be back to try your Sunday lunches.

We recently booked a table at a local pub/restaurant (The Cross Inn). It's a very cosy place with an abundance of character. My wife and I decided to go for a lamb dinner at only £6.50.

Make sure your hungry great food large portions in a warm and friendly atmosphere with real chips not frozen would definitely recommend this establishment.

Went last night with a party of eight. Had told everyone how amazing the cod and chips were last time I visited. Six of us had them . All agreed chips were like homemade and the cod was tasty and the batter crunchy. So many times batter can be soft and greasy but this was excellent. I cleared my plate. The other two in my party had the chicken and they said it was excellent. This is pub food at its best. I will be back again and again.

Gonna keep this short, average pub food, expensive for the quality. Better places to go in the area. God was slow also considering it was not busy.

Vine aquí para el almuerzo con algunos colegas viviendo el momento y no me decepcionó. Todos pedimos el filete de cordero acuñada y estaba delicioso. El servicio era bueno y los precios no están mal. Mucho espacio de aparcamiento. Volveré.

El 7 de febrero visitó ayer con mi madre y mi hija. Excelente servicio de comida. Todo era precioso y fresco. Aunque tuve que era preciosa chaqueta fritas esponjosas y mi mam y mi hija tenía patatas fritas fue bonito ver los chips no congelados real! Sin duda volveremos pronto!

Fuimos para una comida familiar antes de decir adiós y volver al extranjero. Comidas de buena calidad a precios asequibles. Caseras y deliciosas comidas y 8 por 65 libras ganga! !

I'm a regular here, always have a good meal which are plentiful and tasty, lovely pint whilst waiting. staff are always polite n pleasant . love going here.

We popped in here after a mid week visit to Penallta Park. The food is standard pub grub but what it lacks in gastro quality it makes up for with quantity. The staff are friendly and the service prompt and prices very reasonable. We didn't have it but I was looking quite enviously at the curry on the next table so I may have to return to give it a try.

Been here on a number of times and had various meals.The hunters chicken is so tasty and is my favourite.As for the Sunday lunches they to are delicious. Never a bad point to find and the staff are great too.

Booked for a table of eleven to celebrate a double birthday. Our order was taken on the night and our meals arrived very quickly. Everyone enjoyed the food and we would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone . Thanks to the staff and chef. Fabulous!

I came here for a family meal and now I won't go anywhere else! The food was excellent and my steak was cooked perfectly. The staff were so friendly and welcoming and also extremely helpful to a family member with strange eating habits/dietary requirements. I have already and will continue to recommend this place to everyone!! Absolutely loved it and will 100% be back!

Been here a few times as a friend recommended it , decided to take my nan there as she wanted to go somewhere local & our food was lovely, the price is unreal its worth more to be honest! The staff were so nice & we got raffle tickets there & by chance i put my mobile number on them both, got home & honestly by the time we got back i had a missed call from the pub & they even left a voicemail to inform me my nan had left her purse up there but they noticed straight away & put it away safe for her she was so worried as it had her bus pass, cash & her bank cards in it & her house keys! I couldn't of been more great full that they had even went out of their way & used their heads to get hold of me! I was baffled thinking how they had my number haha! But yes i couldn't of been more thankful , highly recommend keep it up guys

I enjoyed my meal here very much indeed, all good quality produce, home made chips the steak I had was best Iv had in a long time literally cooked to perfection.. Would definately return as great food, friendly informative staff, I could not decide what to order the lady at the bar talked me through a few the dishes on the menu how they were prepared etc even told me where the steak came from, which I was so greatful for, u don't seem to get this personable service at the bigger chains, it was a delightful visit and will return very soon to try a few more of the dishes A*

Best food I have had in a long time! Went with 10 other of my friends for my birthday every meal out the same time every meal boiling hot and every meal perfect! Not one fault! Lovely staff so helpful Bar is good to have a drink inThe place all in all is the best to go to!

Since moving in to this area, have now visited and eaten at this establishment four times with my Wife and I, also with friends. The food is excellent and competitively priced. The atmosphere and ambience of the Inn is very cosy with an open fire separating the dining areas. The staff are very friendly and obliging. great food, great atmosphere! in essence a great little inn to spend the evening.

We didn't book and we're lucky to get a table for lunch. Full menu with plenty of choice all at reasonable prices. Served very quickly and unlike many pubs they came to the table for your order and you didn't have to pay before you ate. The food arrived pipping hot and cooked perfectly, real home made chips and my gammon was cooked really well and was very large. I can't fault the service or food. The pub is a little cold, but in all fairness it is very old and they really do have lots if heating on. Spotlessly clean as well.Worth a little trip out especially if you are visiting Llancaiach Fawr Manor House as the pub is just up the hill from this enchanting Manor.

We keep going back here purely for the food which is good value for money. They serve proper home made gravy and chips too! The staff are mostly very friendly and there is an excellent selection of wine. You need to book for Sunday lunch as it's so popular. It's great having somewhere like this close by. They serve excellent mid week meals too...if you like gammon, you're in for a treat.

Always a friendly welcome, with consistently excellent food, representing good value for money. The seating area is clean and cosy, with tables that are just the right size.The facilities are always spotlessly clean, with ample car parking. Overall, a fantastic place for a nice meal out. I can highly recommend everything on the menu.

Very disappointed,treated badly apparently fish has increased in price after we were assured ours wouldn't as we had paid deposit at that price,when i complained on paying balance for 20 people i was told we could have it at the ordered price and that the £1.47 would be taken out of the waitress's pay that took our deposit,we wont be returning there again if this is how they treat their staff and customers,needless to say I paid the increased amount .

Food was of an ok standard. Not much to write home about but on the other hand not that bad. Restaurant itself is very dated and a little cold and empty. Toilets were a complete let down, no light bulbs, broken toilet seats and toilet roll holders. Staff ok but no enthusiasm or go in them. No atmosphere at all..

Always eat here for family meals they have no problem with us nice food nice people and a great price

Came to Wales to visit the mother in law and she brought us to this lovely pub for some food. She had not been for 14yrs since previous owners and the food on Saturday was lovely, we had steak chips salad with waffle for pudding coming again next time we're here:)))

Popped in Saturday afternoon with my Wife and Mother. The food was excellent and the service was fast. Staff are very friendly and the menu is very reasonably priced.

Often visit here on a Sunday when I can't be bothered to make a cooked dinner and the food and decor of this place always takes me back to my childhood when I used to have a dinner at my Grandparents.First of all - Don't expect too much of the place, it is a no-frills type establishment and not the most proffesional of outfits but it does hit the spot with its sunday lunch. Proper Gravy, loads of meat (chicken, beef or lamb) and the veg (particularly the cabbage) is great. Roasties are a bit naff unfortunately but overall a real proper home made dinner that has a lot of fans locally.You will need to book ahead if you plan on going there on a Sunday, they also do takeaway dinners which are also popular for those who can't get out and about too easliy.

Adoramos a comida! Comemos frango assado com batatas fritas e ervilhas cozidas. Excelente porção! Recomendo!

OMG ! Called in for a drink with family one afternoon. Waited for service for ten mins to be faced with the most rudest person with a huge attitude . Was not allowed to stay in lounge as there were at max 6 people eating, two of them were in dirty work clothes. Was sent in bar that was covered in dust due to building work going on. Asked for white wine with ice and she wanted to serve it in a j20 glass WOW this place was going from bad to worse.Don't know if this person owned this pub but however she needs training on how to greet people and treat people. Recommend she starts with the basic A SMILE.TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE.

The real chips were lush however the tin peas, frozen garlic bread and pre cooked steak pie were a let down. This place has potential but sadly at this point in time a defect chef is lacking.

Lovely pub grub in nice surroundings. Would have given a 5* review only i was told that i couldnt have a cup of tea as it would have to be made upstairs but i could have a coffee from the machine, however on standing next to the machine there was a button that said tea?

Our family visited The Cross Inn this past weekend. The menu has a varied selection so we all chose different meals - Chicken Tikka Masala, Steak Pie, Plaice, Cajun Chicken and Liver & Onions. All the food was well cooked and tasty, the home made chips were excellent and the desserts were also delicious. The staff are friendly and it was very cosy sat near the log burner. The five of us had two courses and including soft drinks it cost £60. Excellent value. Thanks

This week's quest for the perfect roast took us to The Cross Inn.. lovely pub with friendly staff... we were shown to our table and our order was taken .. didnt have to wait very long at all for our food.. options were beef .. lamb .. chicken.. i opted for the beef as i feel you always judge a good sunday dinner by the way the beef is cooked... It was absolutely delicious. The meal came all plated up ready and we had beef, roast potato, boiled potatoes, yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots and cabbage.. plenty of gravy. It was so tasty it tasted like a proper old fashioned cooked dinner you would get at your grandmother's house. It only cost £5.50 which i thought was brilliant. Will definitely be going back her again as we really enjoyed every mouthfull.

Menu vast - not a good sign - it has to be all frozen or pre-cooked.6pm visit - 2 x mixed grill 20 oz ?? - 1 butterflied sea bass, 1 children's sausage, smileys, peas. Sea bass was not butterflied and pan fried with crispy skin as it should have been - if you cannot pan fry with crispy skin take it off!!! It was a farmed, defrosted gutted fish and cooked with slimy skin, the plate was cold - this came with peas , potatoes that were chucked on the plate, a table spoon of salad and 2 pats of butter, that did not melt on the potato as it was so cold - to be fair I was hungry and the taste was fine.Children's meal was DEEP FRIED SMILEYS ( smileys were ordered as the only option otherwise was chips and we thought at least the potato product would be cooked in the oven). The sausages were awful they were the very cheapest you can get and cooked very greasy! Deep fried??? Loads of peas though! All on a VERY HOT plate?? Why? Okay - children's meals £2.99 - lets have them at £4.99 with more veg and BETTER quality oven cooked products please. Why no pasta for children? This is not a cafe, its a pub restaurant Okay this pub may cater for people it has coming in regularly, but then keep the awful children's food for those who want it but offer something better as well? Maybe offer 1/3 portions of main menu at 1/3 price? We went here on the evening we visited as a lunchtime visit months ago previous had been positive.The mixed grills x 2 - a MIXED bag of meat - one plate not too bad but the other had the grisly bony lamb (what cut? who knows?), seemed better sausages than the children's meal .... but why? Onion rings - no - egg - no - black pudding - No - mushrooms - no.....Desserts - ha ha - remember the old Beefeater days when the sundaes were in a plastic container in a glass container .... here we are back to the 80's not worth £3.50! To be fair though the brownie was great with loads of cream!Good friendly service if a little slow....given the very very few people eating at that time. We were asked 3 times if we were ok -but what do you say when you haven't finished your meal you are in a small area and the bar staff are not responsible for the food?

This little restaurant has a brillent cook that cooks excellently but the only downfall was the menu dont have lamb chops which was upsetting I had to have a chicken and bacon pasta salad which was really nice and tasty but was looking farward to lamb.

We chose the Cross Inn as a venue to celebrate my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary, we were a party of 18. Due to the size of the party, I arranged to pick menus up beforehand and give orders the day before, this worked a treat. All meals were brought out within 40 minutes of arriving, this was ideal as they waited for us to settle and get organised before asking if we were ready for our meals. Out of the 18 of us there wasn't one complaint about the meals - everyone was happy, and believe me, if someone didn't like it or had anything to say, they would have said it. Portion sizes are more than ample, nice friendly staff. If I was very picky, I'd have liked to have seen the menu online or at least have had an electronic copy emailed. We will be definitely be going back in the near future

I visited The Cross Inn with my husband, we decided to have a drink along with a meal. I chose plaice and chips my husband the roast chicken and chips, the meal was brought in a reasonable time and it looked delicious, there were also peas, onion rings and a small side salad with it at no extra cost . After our meal we had a lager that too was enjoyable.The Cross is a small friendly place, lovely staff, the landlord and landlady are so nice, the place was spotless and it as a lovely log burner which is so warm and cosy.They also do delicious Sunday roast dinners at a reasonable price as of the meals we chose they too were a reasonable price. I enjoyed my time at The Cross very cosy and relaxing.

Very friendly staff from the bar, waitresses and kitchen staff. Food and service you cannot fault. Sunday lunch has always been busy but the staff have been wonderful into their service.

Have not been here for about 8 years, heard good reports about the recent meals, unfortunately slightly disappointed, not a disaster, there were some good points as well. Bad points: slow service considering only 10 in there, no mushrooms, onion rings or egg with my mixed grill and gristly meat,hot sauce tasted like a hot gravy (odd taste!).The wife had a Tesco style shop bought steak pie with little flavour but had some nice meat in there. Good points: daughter had a cracking gammon, Chips were awesome and prices were reasonable.We will call again and hopefully find an improvement. Friendly staff

you'll need a big appetite as the food portions are very generous in the cross. The steaks are cooked to perfection and they are accompanied by real chips, perfect!!!!
