The Crooked Billet in Southend-on-Sea

ordered 2 starters both required dip. especially the crispy cauliflower bites and they neglected to put the dip in. Really disappointing.

Still an amazing place to visit, seafood shop next to you and fairly priced. An excellent place during the warmer weather 😀

Lovely lunch in a cosy setting with very friendly service from start to finish.

Just passing through, I popped in on a quiet Monday night hence only 3 stars on atmoshphere which I actually preferred, feeling a bit peckish. Lovely little pub, Had the CHICKEN, MUSHROOM AND CIDER Pie, which was Blooming well AWESOME! Will DEFINITELY be heading back there when back in the area.🙂

The food was very bad one of our friends had chicken and it was uncooked. My beef was so rare i could have given it the kiss of life

This picturesque place, the first you encounter in Old Leigh from the car-park, is always bustling with tourists, especially in the summer - so much so I’ve not actually popped in for quite some time until recently at Christmas and now a few times since based on our lovely experience. I’d forgotten what a great intimate friendly atmosphere it has, seemingly filled will locals as much as tourists and diners that clearly have reserved tables in advance. Outside there is an area that even in winter is busy with walkers and visitors. All the staff serving were quick and attentive, especially the lovely Alicia who made us feel very welcome on this and subsequent occasions. The food being delivered looked excellent as did the menu generally, so we will definitely be returning soon with friends to try that out too!

One of your workers, Alicia, was an absolutely amazing server, she was incredibly welcoming and polite and made sure that we was happy with everything all the way through our evening. It was the first time we had ever been to the Billet and we will absolutely be returning thanks to Alicia. If I could give more than 5 stars I would!!

Nice pub... small but full on..

I had a lovely time at the Crooked Billet with my family for lunch. The food was delicious and the service was fantastic, especially from Millie - she was fab! Love this pub, would highly recommend.

Great atmosphere and environment. Food was great got some bar snacks to share and the sticky chicken was my favourite. We where served by Millie who was extremely approachable and kind. definitely the right place to be when in old Leigh.

Walked down for a bite to eat and something to drink and was pleasantly surprised by some amazing company and fab live music! We were served by a lovely lady called Cerys and she was incredibly helpful and attentive and really made the night perfect :)

Consistently a proper pub to visit. Good beers and wine,nice menu,simple pub grub. Warm friendly atmosphere and a nice seat in the front window next to the bar makes it perfect.

We celebrated Burns Night at the Crooked Billet with Friends on Saturday night . Kerris and her staff went out of their way to make it a special evening . Sammie the piper certainly added to the atmosphere especially when she piped in the haggis. We will certainly be celebrating at the Crooked Billet again next year for Burns night

Lovely Pub. Atmosphere great, very friendly staff, tasty food. Cerys is so lovely, hardworking and all staff make you so welcome. You can tell they like working there. Janos, a waiter, what a nice man, pleasant, helpful and attentive, but not over the top. Burns night was a real hit. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the whole evening. Love the pub's atmosphere and character and good choice of drinks. But taco sharing platter we had was the worst we've ever had in a pub and it cost £11. A complete rip off at this price. lt truly was awful! Took it back and wasn't charged. Put off eating in there as chef was clueless!

The staff were so welcoming and helpful throughout our visit. We had a voucher with 50% of mains which was excellent value. We opted for the Roast Beef Sunday Lunch which was delicious. We noted when some other guests were ordering after us that the roast beef had run out , it clearly is a very popular choice so you may want to get extra in for the Sunday Roast option to avoid guests being disappointed. We will definitely be back again!!!.

Great location of this pub in a good location right at the sea front. Went there in January and had a good seat with overlooking the ocean. Charming service and good selection of ales.

Incredible staff so welcoming great place to go for drinks and atmosphere . Do not eat here. the food is awful so so bad and overpriced its inedible... Such a shame as its such a great place and as said the staff are lovely .. Got offered free drinks and pudding as the food was so terrible.. Not a one off as others has pre warned me. Oh dearie me - that was probably one of the worst meals I've ever had! Booked a special Christmas eve dinner in person about 3 months ago for my mum who was visiting - only to find that we weren't entitled for the Christmas Menu because we didn't ask for it when we booked (we weren't asked ... and our psychic skills are somewhat limited) The mushroom starter was slop, over-cooked & served on tough (microwaved?) bread The calamaris arrived after the other starter had finished - greasy and over salted and batter & seafood seemed to have parted company! Sea bass was inedible - arrived in a pool of grease-separated sauced - undercooked potatoes, over cooked prawn(s?) in the luke-warm greasy sauce. Broccoli was either raw or burnt and the seabass was a goyngy-maybe-cooked-or-not thing which I attemped one mouthfull of and cleared swiftly to the side of my plate. The waiting staff were very pleasant and attentive - but still charged us the full wacking total for our un-culinary experience!! I won't be eating here again - even though it's my local which is a shame- nor will I be recommending Was the chef off early? The presentation seemed very unprofessional - like an early GCSE experiment that had failed.

Friendly staff in a traditional pub . The beer is great and the food delicious and hot! If going in the evening be aware the kitchen closes at 8.30pm. Parking nearby is an easy walk. Looks lovely and festive in there atm.

Impromptu visit with my partner. After a stroll along the coastal path from Westcliff on a chilly and sunny day, this was the perfect sanctuary to warm the cockles of our hearts. The pub is cosy with a log fire and the pie and vegetable meals we chose from the menu, tasty and filling. The charming young lady who greeted us with a warm welcome, was also the perfect waitress. She really was a star and a real asset to any catering establishment. Bravo!

We went here and sat outside in the summer, the food was superb. This week with our two dogs, we came again and asked if the dogs were welcome in the bar and they said it was fine. My husband had the haddock and chips, sadly this time the batter was soft and tasteless. I ordered 2 sausages for the dogs. After half an hour I had to ask the bar staff twice where they were and each time, they said they are coming. How long does cooking 2 sausages. In the end we just walked out, paying for something we never received. So we went to the fab Sara’s tea room,. Never had anything like this at Saras or the Peterboat. Very disappointed this time especially one dinner and a wine costing £40 😔

Today we came for lunch after paddleboarding and we had the best leek and potato soup ever served by the charming Bethan. Happy to come back regularly.

Visited the Crooked billet in Leigh on Sea, Essex for Sunday lunch. Very disappointed especially at £20pp. The beef (2 slices) was dry and rubbery. The potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were obviously purchased frozen. The veg was hard, barely cooked. The only perfectly cooked item was the broccoli. Did complain to the server who apologised and offered a free dessert.

Came in with some Friends to have a catch up and food! I went on the recommendation that Bethan gave me which was the nicholsons burger! All I can say is it did not disappoint, Bethan our server was amazing and very knowledgeable

Came to the billet for lunch with friends and was greeted by Cerys who immediately made us feel welcome. Cerys explained that there was recently a new menu introduced and told us about the wide variety of items available. My friend and I both had the steak sandwich which was exactly at described if not better. Would definitely recommend and will be back for a family gathering in the near future. Thank you Cerys!

Went for lunch we were greeted by a member of staff and shown to our table with a lovely view of the estuary. I had fish and chips that was cooked perfectly and the presentation was really good, my friend had the steak pie she said it was very tasty and filling and the food was served fresh and hot..so perfect food and lovely staff

Really like the venue and have previously visited and enjoyed the pub. Unfortunately the service was way below par on this visit. I myself sorted out menus for my table. Our server was slow and inattentive despite it being fairly quiet. When we were finally able to flag down our waiter to order food, we were then told a fair few items weren’t available on the menu anymore- mainly half of the vegetarian options. It was really quite disappointing as the place had been booked for a big family occasion and I’m afraid we won’t be returning in future.

Looking at the website we were led to believe that you served a lovely roast dinner on a Sunday. We booked a table for 5 of us and realised once we were there that you don't cook roast in the summer. So we looked at the menu and chose other meals. Even though we enjoyed the food, we still felt disappointed that there was no roast. It wasn't made clear on the website. We also saw lovely photos of roast and a good review on how good it was. Hopefully in future you will state in big bold letters NO ROAST IN THE SUMMER.

A great place to take Family from Oz on a rainy lunchtime. A massive thank you to Griff and other staff who were friendly and attentive. We all enjoyed the Steak Ale pie. Family from Oz enjoyed the quiantness of the pub.

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone, I went here with my family for lunch and the food was lovely and it came out quickly. Griffin always had a smile on his face and came over checking on us seeing how our food was and that.

I come with my family for Father's day, with beautiful sunshine we sat in the garden area, it is a very lovely place, and staff are great, Griffin was brilliant, really lovely and helpful. Thank you, look forward to coming back.

We came for lunch after a 5 mile walk. We were impressed by the selection of 5 real ales. The food was delicious. My dad had the fish and chips and I had the fish goujon sandwich . The portions were generous. The staff were friendly and attentive, despite being quite busy.

Bar food is brilliant. The loaded chips, bone less chicken with chilli dip. Don't get me started on the haddock goujons fan bloody static. And the staff a pretty good. Love you guys.

Rudest bar staff I have ever come across. I asked for music to be turned down (not off) and was called a s**t by barman. Music was then turned up even louder. Will never go there again.

Completely humiliated by the lady serving. I waited in the restaurant trying to get some kind of acknowledgement. When eventually did get eye contact was completely ignored. Waited a bit longer, walked into the other bar and she just ignored me again. I know I'm not a regular but felt most unwelcome. Am moving in the area but disappointed as wanted it to be my local.

My favourite pub in old Leigh for sure. Amazing atmosphere and the staff are excellent, friendly and quick to serve. Dog friendly too which makes a world of difference to us. Love the fact they rotate the ales on offer and you can get a great pint of guinness in there too. Food is good value too. Thank you !!

Lovely haddock and chips as always, atmosphere lovely and staff always looking after us. We had a selection of the Bar snacks which looked massive portions and full of flavour.

Oh dear, we went on the SHANTY DAY , the music was dreadful, the singers were like the waking dead , one ol boy looked like uncle albert after 20 pints of rum .Definately would not return

A very busy venue but well worth visiting.

We came for a Bank Holiday Saturday afternoon. There were singers in the outside area. It was lively and crowded, the music was nice and the service was fast enough.

Very busy bar, that said we, did go on a sunny Bank Holiday Saturday. Beer was okay, music was good but we couldn't get close to hear it properly. Sandflies / Blackfish are a nuisance,!
