We had a lovely lunch in this small café. The chowder was delicious and the staff were friendly and efficient. They prefer payment by cash if possible. (They have a toilet for customer use, but it is at the back which is up a few steps.)

This café is located at the Square in the town centre. The interior is fairly narrow and long with a step at the halfway point where the counter sits opposite the cake selection. This arrangement made it difficult to try to browse the cake display (and ultimately pay) without finding yourself getting in the way of through-traffic so we resisted the temptation of the "goodies". Amongst items on the menu were soup, tacos, quiche and sandwiches or paninis with some quirky fillings. We both opted for the less quirky honey roast ham & cheddar cheese ciabatta (£7.95 each) which were heated and served with a little salad and some crisps. Although the place was quite busy at the time our food was brought out in good time and we thought it was tasty. By the time we added an Irn Bru and Diet Cola (suitably chilled) the bill came to £23.80 which we considered reasonable these days. The café is dog friendly to the extent that they actually have a menu for dogs and there were a few of the four-legged clients in the building during the time of our visit, including one belonging to friends who by chance were also passing through Kelso at the same time. They were seated at a table for two so unfortunately we couldn't join them. Staff were pleasant in our experience.

This is one of the worst experiences my wife as a disabled person of nearly 80 has ever experienced. We visited after noon on lst June and sat down at a table for 4 and was immediately told by an assistant if we could move to a table for 2 as it was business policy to keep tables for 4 for larger parties. The only free tables for 2 were up several steps and it was pointed out that my wife had a stick and was chronically disabled and would find the steps difficult. There were around 3-4 other larger tables vacant and nobody waiting for a table. It resulted in my wife and myself feeling totally humiliated with other customers looking on . This felt like discrimination towards a disabled person and resulted in us leaving. I fail to understand the attitude of this business and how they could treat anyone in such a deplorable manner. We have visited this business over the years on a number of occasions and we will not return. The result was a delicious meal in another establishment who were friendly and very accommodating to our needs. We did feel sorry for the young assistant who was just doing her job.

Seemed a nice place. Not busy so sat at a larger table away from others as we had a fidgety dog. We were asked (politely) if we would move to a table for two, even though there were several tables free and we only wanted a quick drink. Unfortunately the table was right at the back, near the kitchen and toilet - my least favourite place to sit! The constant stream of staff made the dog really fidgety so we drank up and left ASAP, The coffees and scones were lovely. We had planned to return for lunch but decided against it and drive home.

Tastefully decorated with a great menu and plenty of gluten free options. All in all, lovely food and friendly staff - highly recommended

Really disappointed! Having travelled to Kelso for a different purpose we decided to stop for a coffee and a bite to eat at one of Kelso's several coffee shops and eateries. On this occasion we chose an establishment called The Cream Chimneys which just happened to be adjacent to where I had parked the car. I should add that both myself and my partner are in our late 70s and have some mobility issues which we tend not to highlight! As it was 11.20am we were a bit early for lunch but still planning on having something a bit more substantial than a coffee and croissant! On entering The Cream Chimneys the place didn't seem that busy with only a few tables occupied. As we didn't want to sit in the middle of the service area and as the only table for 2 was located in the middle of the room and hadn't been cleared we chose one of several vacant tables for 4 around the perimeter. ( No signs asking patrons to please wait to be seated!) On looking at the menu which offered an excellent selection we noticed that there was also a " Dog Menu" ( a novel but nice touch!) which suggested that this was more than just a "dog friendly" establishment. We duly perused the menu and having decided on our order ( which amounted to a value in the region of £25) I was just about to go up to the service counter to place our order when we were approached by one of the staff/ management asking us if we would mind moving to a table for two as the table for 4 at which we were seated " MIGHT" just be needed by a party of 4 or larger ( should that situation ever arise) and they ( the management) wouldn't like to disappoint them!! As this was highly unlikely given the time of day and , given that there were at least 4 other vacant tables for 4 on the upper seating area, we at first agreed to move to a table for 2 then realising that this table was yet to be cleared and situated in the middle of the floor, changed our mind and decided to stay put. When I explained to the member of staff in question that we didn't wish to be seated at a table in the middle of the room and would like to remain seated where we were I was informed quite emphatically that this wasn't an option as it was management policy that parties of 2 could and would only be seated at tables for 2 in the interest of all potential parties of 4 or more being able to be accommodated. (Actually quite embarassing for both myself and the member of staff in question given the audience of the other customers!) Hardly a customer orientated policy where 2 actual customers willing to spend £25 + can be excluded on the pretext that their table might just be required for a larger party which had yet to manifest itself out of the mist of a still fairly quiet Kelso at 11.30a.m. on a cold, early March morning!! I explained to the staff/management member that there were a number of vacant tables still available and in any case we weren't planning on staying very long to which she replied that she was sorry but she wasn't the owner and it was the business policy that parties of 2 should only be served at tables for 2 so that larger parties of "potential" customers wouldn't be disappointed! I pointed out that this was hardly an astute business attitude and definitely not "customer friendly" so we wouldn't be giving them our business and we left to find another cafe/coffee bar that would appreciate our custom. Especially as this was still a very quiet time of year for the Scottish Borders tourism & hospitality industry. In all my years in hospitality I've never walked out of an establishment in these circumstances! Not a good advert for Kelso and not a good advert for the Scottish Tourism and Hospitalty industry. Proof of the pudding of how wrong The Cream Chimneys has got its business reasoning is that 2 other establishments in the same vicinity that we visited were both full and couldn't accommodate us. We finally did find an establishment that could offer us what we were looking for and which seemed to be appreciative of our custom! I should add that as a former Scottish Borders Tourism and Hospitality business advisor for 14 years I have rarely come across a situation where a business would rather have empty tables than accommodate customers whose numbers don't match their table sizes! We left The Cream Chimneys feeling insulted, indignant and offended and, similar to a number of similar reviews submitted within the last year, vowing never to return! I appreciate that this establishment does have many more 4/5 star reviews but do wonder how many of these can be attributed to the current owners. Had we been bone fide tourists from another part of the country or from abroad our experience may have given us a totally wrong impression of what Kelso hospitality is all about and have left us vowing never to return not just to The Cream Chimneys but to the Scottish Borders!! " A happy customer tells a friend; an unhappy customer tells the world" "The measure of success is not whether you have a tough problem to resolve but whether it is the same problem you had last year"

The Cream Chimneys is a popular, must-visit for lunch, light snacks or coffee n’ cake, famous for both its traditional menu and imaginative specials board. The friendly, professional service isn’t only enjoyed by humans, but extends to our four-legged furry friends (and the occasional duck - check out their Insta!). There is even a doggy menu! On my latest visit, the haggis focaccia caught my eye on the specials menu and delivered everything it promised, combining a Mediterranean staple with beautiful Scottish flavours. My friend had the locally sourced salmon fillet on a bed of salad. Delicious! Lovely ambiance with quirky Scottish decor and even an offering of high-quality gifts sampling a range of local crafts for you to buy. Situated in the middle of town with ample free parking nearby, this is a must-stop for any local or visitor to Kelso. Great place for family visits, catching up with friends or even small business meetings. And, last but not least, all very reasonably priced. Highly recommended!

We tried this place on our last morning as on other days it simply did not open early enough for us. A pity as we were staying in a guest house without breakfast nearby.Excellent range of cakes, good coffee and there was an excellent vibe about the place. Also there was reasonable room in the place and did not feel hemmed in. Took a little while to pay as it was busy - would suggest that this is the kind of place to come relax, chat and catch up with old friends, so if in a rush other options may be better. At the back there were craft items to purchase, not cheap but some very nice quality products.Just a pity it doesn't open a wee bit earlier.

Cute little cafe with lovely cakes, but the owners need to be a little stricter when it comes to other peoples dogs!Today we were in and one dog was barking quite nastily at any other dog coming in - causing one woman a big fright when walking in. Another lady brought her dog in and then gave it a raw cows bone with meat still attached to eat on the floor! Obviously this dog then got protective of its bone so growled at Piper the cafe owners dog...While I understand that it is the pet-owners responsibility to look after their own pets, I think the cafe owners when seeing something that isn't right, should say something!Piper - the cafe owners dog does have the tendency to get her tail in your coffee or cakes if you're sitting at the low table, so make sure you get one of the higher ones!

We were shown to a table and then ignored for 10 - 15 minutes. We had only popped in for what we intended to be a quick coffee and cake before continuing our journey. A simple acknowledgement such as 'I'll be with you shortly' would have been appreciated, but instead the waitress/owner made it a priority to clear tables rather than take our order. The coffee and cake was fine when it eventually arrived, but by that time we just wanted to be on our way. Another negative point was the presence of a large resident dog stretched out on the floor creating a tripping hazard for anyone trying to go up the steps to the counter or the toilets. Not a place we'd return to.

Excellent, unusual snack food - vegan and Asian soups particularly tasty. Home-made scones to die for. Friendly family-run, welcoming to dogs. Cosy atmosphere, lovely coffee. Prime location in Kelso Square opposite Town Hall. Mustn’t miss.

Whilst walking round Kelso we noticed a dog in the entrance of the coffee shop. That is Piper (retriever) aged 6 who lives there so we popped in. We each had a nice coffee and a very tasty Empire biscuit. Cakes etc can be chosen from the 'Table of Temptation' A nice ambience to the cafe that also sells leather goods etc - apparently they won the Best New Business in Scotland award in 2018.

My son has a dairy allergy so the offer of quality dairy free cake was perfect!!!!! Lunch was delicious and service was just right, attentive when needed but without feeling intrusive. We will definitely be back

Stopped for coffee and cake one morning. The coffee was very good. And the cakes are all home made and quite delicious. Must go again!

Wayne and Jane (and of course Piper) are the perfect hosts for the best coffee shop in Kelso. The toastie was packed with luscious tasty cheese and Mrs Jolly’s cream scone was equally delicious. As a avid coffee lover the brew was sensational giving great strength and body, just right. Check out the fantastic arts and crafts too.... We’ll definitely be back again!!!

Popped in for lunch on our way to Lucker. Lovely quaint tea shop which offered simple lunches. Choice of a couple of soups and sandwiches, toasties, wraps and paninis. There is a list of fillings to choose from. We opted for Honey Chilli Chicken Panini and Chilli Cheese Toastie. These came with a lovely fresh salad and coleslaw, With 2 glasses of milk and a pot of tea the bill came to just unter £20. There were some lovely cakes and scones on offer but we didn't try them this time. Dogs are welcome and there is a resident one. However he wasn't there when we visited

Visiting Scotland for the first time. Found this great little cafe in Kelso. Very welcoming and friendly including our very large GSD x Husky. Definitely recommend to anyone in the area. Great drinks range and ice cream enjoyed too.

Super place to stop for coffee and cake. I usually get a window seat and it's especially interesting to look out at the market when it's on. Don't have a dog but they are very welcome at this location.

Easy place to meet friends and enjoy coffee. Scones are always fresh coffee also. They do have a dig, so not everyone’s choice.

Popped in for lunch with Nico our dog after a walk at nearby Bowmont Forest. Piper the golden retriever who is employed there as meeter and greeter ignored us but the people who work for her, Wayne and Jane, provided excellent food and friendly service. This is now on our list of places to return to next time we are in Kelso.

This was my first time here and I was not disappointed, very friendly and warm welcome. The food was amazing I had the tomato and basil soup along side a gluten free toastie. I was very happy at the amount of gluten free options they have. I also had a peach and almond cake to finish off which was simply delicious. If you go here honestly try this!!! You won’t be disappointed. I don’t usually go to cafes/ restaurants solo but I was in kelso and felt peckish and was recommended to come here by archie Hume at A.HUME. Very good recommendation. I will be back

Just had a delicious lunch here with the best bowl of soup I think I've ever had. I can't recommend this place highly enough... Friendly welcome, quirky surroundings and all home made food, the bread included. Worth a visit to the town for the food alone! Thanks for having us... If we're in the area again, we'll be back!!!

Had been looking forward to my visit made specifically to try this place out. Noone else in except the numerous staff all talking away happily to each other. After looking at menu which looked fabulous I went up to order as none of staff looked vaguely interested in taking my order. No sit down we will come to you. I sat and waited and the place started to fill. 3 other tables came in and someone came from behind the counter to clear dirty dishes that had been on a table when I went in. Finally someone came to serve me and I commented on my wait to which I was given a story about the coffee machine not working which was why staff were chatting. Hmmmmn really. Then as of course luck would have it they were out of the very thing I was there to have. I will give them another chance another day as the menu was interesting but the service was shockingly bad especially if they then are having to tell people no coffee! Zero recognition of interaction with customers and I speak as someone with a long hospitality career. Great location great menu but lacking in customer connection.

We were staying next door at the Crown Inn to attend a wedding in the area however commencement of their lunch service was leaving us tight for time so we popped in here instead in the knowledge we’d get a decent snack. The stairs may be a challenge for the less able however it’s worth the effort as the produce served is very good. We both ordered quiche which was served with salad, coleslaw, crisps and a Balsamic dressing (£6.50). I’m not usually too keen on Balsamic however I used some from the small pot provided separately and it turned out to be fine. The quiche itself was very good. We had coffee (£3) and tea (£2.80) which were very good too but since we were a bit pushed for time we had tray bakes as takeaway - Millionaire Shortbread for my wife and a slice of Aero Mint for myself. Both priced at £3.50 they went down well with a coffee the following day when we were back home! Service on this occasion by the two young females serving was pleasant and efficient. Overall cost for lunch was a reasonable £25.80.
