Loved it. Laid back overnight stop traveling south from Edinburgh. Exceptional hosts, nothing too much trouble. The honesty bar was a revelation. Snug & a friendly place for fellow travellers to sit & chat.

We had a great stay. Our room was very great. The Breakfast was amazing and the service also. Curt and Susie are so nice. We really enjoyed our stay and would stay here again. It takes around 50 minutes to the airport. Around Eatlston are some nice things to visit, like castles. The coast ist also close.

I stayed at the Red Lion for 2 nights while visiting family in the area a couple of weeks ago. The owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome, the room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast delicious. I will definitely be back to stay soon, thank you so much

The Red Lion, Earlston is a hidden gem on the Scottish Borders. The hosts Susie and Curt cannot do enough to make your stay the best posssible experience. The rooms are spotlessly clean, the beds super comfortable and the showers spacious. The dining room/bar is unique, totally original and charming. We ate there both evenings, although bringing in a takeaway from the village Fish and Chip shop or local Thai is allowable. The food is restaurant standard with a choice to suit virtually all tastes: the halloumi skewers, filet steak, braised steak, vegetable frittata, meat pie, creamy mash and the tastiest chips ever were delicious. Breakfast is a continental buffet with home made scones, cereals, yogurts, a selection of breads and crumpets but a full Scottish can be pre ordered, with haggis of course. The real stars, however, are Susie and Curt, they are the ones who give The Red Lion its charm and make it what it is - staying there is a must, you will not be disappointed.

I deleted my earlier review as not aware of the facts. Going by the reply to my review and talking to the locals. This looks like a bed and breakfast that does evening meals and opens the bar to residents only. Correct me if I am wrong I remember this being a normal pub that did good food for everyone

The best place! What a huge amount of effort Susie and Curt put into this place. The rooms are amazing - spotlessly clean, huge comfy bed, lovely shower. And the friendliest hosts, even down to Hugo the dog. Thanks for a fab stay - see you again soon.

My wife , myself and 8 year old Grandaughter spent one night here so we could break up our journey on our way to Kelso . What a pity it wasn't longer . From the second we arrived the hosts could not have been nicer. We booked a meal as we were arriving early evening. Braised steak for us and Chicken For our Grandaughter. The food was fantastic. Proper home made old fashioned grub. Afterwards we spent some time in the extremely cosy lounge . Absolutely nothing was too much trouble for Susie and Curt. The level of service was like nothing we have experienced before. We stayed in the large family room which like everywhere was immaculately clean and had a great sleep in the comfortable bed . I would highly recommend The Red Lion to anyone visiting this beautiful area. Only I'm not shouting too loud in case you book when we want to return.

We enjoyed our meal at the Red Lion (recommended by our B&B hosts), enjoying butternut squash and coconut soup and fish and chips (it was Friday). It was a pleasant place to eat (except for the 1980s pop music perhaps).

We needed to break our journey on our way to our holiday let and this pub fitted the bill perfectly. Easy parking right at the centre, a friendly welcome from the staff. Our order for a light lunch was swiftly taken and served without much delay, which was what we needed. Food was good. There was also a group of people at another table before us, but we were served first, which we appreciated, rather than having to wait for their much more complex order to be dealt with. The staff were helpful in answering a question about the locality. I would gladly eat here again if in the area.

This little hotel was a joy to stay at. Our room was larger than expected and lovely and cool considering it was June. We were on a trip down memory lane and a fact finding mission about my Aunt and so glad we chose this hotel. Bedlinen was crisp and clean and the room seemed to have been recently redecorated. Nothing was too much trouble for the hosts. The breakfasts were superb. Best sausages we've ever tasted. I will be back with my daughters to explore the exceptionally friendly town that is Earlston. I'll also bring back the coathangers we accidently took with us - apologies!!! Anna Thomason and Tom Thompson

I fell and hurt my knee in the street and hobbled into this bar to ask if I could wash the grit from my palms. I discovered that my knee was bleeding and went into the bar to ask for a plaster! Well they were so lovely and gave me antiseptic cream and Craig bandaged up my knee! I cannot thank them enough. And will return to have a drink in there next time and maybe some bar food! Thank you Caitlin for being so kind too!

Stayed here for three nights B and B, decided not to eat here because of the look of the place! We had a 'superior' which was OK for the money. The room was not cleaned properly each day. It's a pub and as we were on the front we had to listen to the load rubbish people talk about until after midnight. We also had to keep the windows closed to keep the smoke out. Earlston has seen better days, Melrose is nicer. There was absolutely no interaction with the staff, they had on dirty T shirts and jeans. It seems that the previous tenants have moved on. We would not go back.

Good food, although not an overly varied menu, but good helpings and worth the wait, It isn't micro-waved . I visited on a Saturday night having pre-booked a table a week in advance. Just 2 female staff running the bar and tables. Clearly short-staffed as I was not told about the specials blackboard, not told where to sit for the table I reserved and wasn't asked if I enjoyed the meal or if I wanted a sweet. All normal pub etiquette, but I wasn't bothered as it was a good meal and I could see both women were rushed off their feet. The locals have no manners and hog the bar area, but I would return.

Read my hotel review which was a combination hotel-restaurant review. We arrived late and as the owner spent 30 minutes finding us a place to stay, we ate a delicious, hearty meal in the bar. It was warm and cozy and we had the company of some beautiful dogs because the International Dog Show was in Edinburgh. Thank you the the compassionate owner who dried a few tears and found us a place to stay.

We had been to kelso races for the day and decided to pop in here for a bar meal. The girl serving was very polite, helpful and efficient. The food was home cooked and tasty. I had the creamy garlic mushroom starter and my husband has the spinach and celery soup both were excellent . Then for mains we had both had the lamb hotpot. The meat was succulent and potatoes and vegetables all cooked beautifully and this came with farmhouse bread and butter. An excellent warming meal after a cold day out . We definitely be back. Thank you

we have just spent a night in the red lion the square earlston after visiting relatives in the area.....we chose the red lion for the position and ease of reach...the hotel is quite small with 7/8 letting rooms and we had a front facing double...the room was a decent size, not huge, but perfectly adequate...very clean..comfortable bed...very warm duvet!!...en suite shower room looked fairly newly refurbished and very nice, good walk in shower....coffee and tea facilities...breakfast was also good, choice of full English, vegetarian, and the usual cereals, juice etc...we also had dinner there with our relatives,,,typical pub grub but very good..good choice of menu,,,nice friendly staff...this might not be a 5* luxury hotel..but we had absolutely no complaints and would not hesitate to recommend for a bed and breakfast stay..ideal for holiday travellers and walkers etc....good job red lion

The food was very good, but we were almost forgotten about by the staff because of large tables in the adjacent dining area. The landlord came over an apologised for the slow service as we were paying the bill (before we said anything about the service) and gave us a free drink to make amends. Very nice touch, and (almost) made up for the service.

Had been looking forward to my visit made specifically to try this place out. Noone else in except the numerous staff all talking away happily to each other. After looking at menu which looked fabulous I went up to order as none of staff looked vaguely interested in taking my order. No sit down we will come to you. I sat and waited and the place started to fill. 3 other tables came in and someone came from behind the counter to clear dirty dishes that had been on a table when I went in. Finally someone came to serve me and I commented on my wait to which I was given a story about the coffee machine not working which was why staff were chatting. Hmmmmn really. Then as of course luck would have it they were out of the very thing I was there to have. I will give them another chance another day as the menu was interesting but the service was shockingly bad especially if they then are having to tell people no coffee! Zero recognition of interaction with customers and I speak as someone with a long hospitality career. Great location great menu but lacking in customer connection.

We were staying next door at the Crown Inn to attend a wedding in the area however commencement of their lunch service was leaving us tight for time so we popped in here instead in the knowledge we’d get a decent snack. The stairs may be a challenge for the less able however it’s worth the effort as the produce served is very good. We both ordered quiche which was served with salad, coleslaw, crisps and a Balsamic dressing (£6.50). I’m not usually too keen on Balsamic however I used some from the small pot provided separately and it turned out to be fine. The quiche itself was very good. We had coffee (£3) and tea (£2.80) which were very good too but since we were a bit pushed for time we had tray bakes as takeaway - Millionaire Shortbread for my wife and a slice of Aero Mint for myself. Both priced at £3.50 they went down well with a coffee the following day when we were back home! Service on this occasion by the two young females serving was pleasant and efficient. Overall cost for lunch was a reasonable £25.80.

Just had a delicious lunch here with the best bowl of soup I think I've ever had. I can't recommend this place highly enough... Friendly welcome, quirky surroundings and all home made food, the bread included. Worth a visit to the town for the food alone! Thanks for having us... If we're in the area again, we'll be back!!!
