The Courtyard Cafe in South Somerset

Some months ago we visited Somerton and decided to pop in for a coffee. It was 3.20pm. The lady at the gift shop counter said that we were too late for the cafe, so we left. Outside on the blackboard was written ‘last orders at 3.30pm’. It didn’t say when they closed. Today we were due to go to Somerton again so I looked up the cafe on Google and it said that they close at 4.30pm. At 3.35pm we walked in and one lady was cashing up whilst another was vacuuming. I pointed out the closing time on Google and was told, ‘There’s nothing we can do about that as the hours are set by Google!’ I replied that this wasn’t true. We run a business and know that all you have to do is use your Google login to change details such as hours.

Lovely little place with nice atmosphere and pleasant staff. The food was generous and staff very friendly.

Met friends again for morning coffee. Very friendly staff. Good food, good value and a lovely selection of cakes.

One of our favourite lunch venues.

Delightful courtyard setting, shame about the food. Sausage overcooked and inedible. "Pie" consisted of stewed beef with small, readymade and overcooked pastry lid, not even a proper pie. Overpriced.

Excellent food and service, staff lovely, they work efficiently, are friendly and attentive. Highly recommend, it's a great place to eat out.

Visited today on a recommendation in town, told the cakes were great but unfortunately they didn’t have any of the three I asked for. The female waiter was quite abrupt and rude, when we asked her if a table was free and pointed at it, got quite annoyed at being questioned and directed us outside, we then waited for over 20 minutes whilst others who came after were served first by the same woman, she got other staff to serve us thereafter and made a point of ignoring us, not sure what we did to irk her other than asking of an empty table was free… but eventually after 30 minutes our coffees came, which were standard and 10 minutes later my friends tea cake arrived which again was standard. Very disappointed as the atmosphere and overall decor etc was very pleasant, shame the staff are not! Props the man who tried to be nicer and offer other cake they did have, unfortunately no vegan or dairy free options though so doesn’t cater for all needs, but is Dog friendly which is nice at least 🤭 in their defence they were busy and dish washer was broken, and it was only £5.70 in total but I worked in catering for 8+ years and customer service is key… we’d have bought lunch if we’d have felt welcomed

Only intended to stop for a drink but was tempted by the prospect of a bacon, sausage and egg roll. Good homely food, well cooked, served piping hot and nicely presented. An excellent pot of tea was served with extra hot water and additional milk provided with a smile for OH who likes milky tea. The rear half of the cafe is light and bright. The courtyard looked like a good spot for summer (if it ever arrives!). Some of the cafe is rather dark and perhaps some better lighting would be useful. But we’ll certainly return.

This is a small cafe, it has a courtyard. Service was good and the food was tasty.

Popped in for a takeaway caramel latte and chai latte and the service was faultless! Lovely, polite and chatty staff behind the counter as I waited for my drinks, thank you all for being so welcoming. Will definitely be visiting again!

Visited today. They were busy, but we were turned away in a brusque and rude manner. Won’t bother visiting again.

I didn’t get as far as the cafe today as the old woman on the shop till was brusque and rude I left!

Quite dissatisfied. My meal arrived with a hair strand in it. Due to a time constraint, I couldn't lodge a complaint. A twig was also present in the salad. The food should have been thoroughly checked.

Charming cafe with good choices of food

Requested a table for 8 for a family event and asked for sandwiches, cream tea and cakes. Responded when promised to confirm that they could cater for us. Coffee was good, the scones were delicious, a good variety of sandwiches were served along with a couple of types of cake to finish off with. Service was very friendly too. I would definitely return.

Fantastic food, great service. Went in for breakfast with a friend, had the Eggs Royale and Poached eggs on avocado toast, both were delicious. It's a small café, so tables are quite close together, it would be challenging for users of walking aids. Will definitely visit again, the lunch menu looked very tempting 🙂

A great food in a lovely village.

Very busy but they found some room for us . Had liver and bacon, which was a bit salty but lovely otherwise. Partner had veg pie , mushroom, leek and spinach. Very nice. Both meals came with mash and veg . Drinks were large. Coffee and tea. Very good value.

Lovely little place, always busy, with good reason. All the food is great and the cakes are stunning.

Lots of choice on menu and cakes, recommend the carrot cake. Choice of alternative milks for latte.

Very quick service and friendly. Had the large somerton breakfast which I think was probably the best cooked breakfast I've ever had. Wife had the pancakes and bacon and was also very good. Will visit again!

Delicious home made food, not cheap but worth it....lovely staff..

I have been here before, many times, a year or so ago and it was much nicer then. Maybe I called in on an off day. There were only a handful of other customers, But the staff were surly. No pleasant interaction or greeting. The man ignored me, even though I stood at the counter. 'Hello, won't be long' would have been nice. He actually stood right in front of me, and I didn't exist. My Latte coffee was fine. Hot and frothy. The cake, a scone, fell apart so much I couldn't cut it in half, and the knife was blunt. I ended up with a plate full of large crumbs. Which I dipped alternately, into cream and then Jam. Jam was nice, clotted cream was nice, but I didn't eat the halved strawberry as I had seen the waitress clutching it in her palm before serving. I write reviews for a living. I will return one day, to see how things are then. Maybe next time I can write a nicer one.

The Courtyard Cafe is highly competent the cakes are very palatable and not too sweetly. The hot chocolate drink was real chocolatey not overly sweet or strong. A very pleasurable encounter, enjoyable attractive cafe with courtyard you should visit. Thank you

Impatience on ordering, overpriced, argumentative on undercharging apparently for a takeaway or something, added gluten marshmallows when 2 of us explained our daughter was not to have them, then another altercation of sorts over whether we had the right to sit down for our cakes because we had takeaway coffee, after spending 25 pounds. Then just to top it off they fibbed about forgetting sweetner in the tea. Pretty easy to just say so sorry I forgot!

Went here for the first time this lunchtime. Had the Somerton breakfast plus a cuppa. Great portion size and plenty of tea at a reasonable price. Very popular place but food and drinks served quickly by lovely friendly staff including the naughty Ollie! The cakes looked fabulous but just didn’t have room.Will make this a regular place to visit.

As someone who is lactose intolerant, it can be difficult finding food without milk without asking about every item on the menu so it was lovely that they offer an all day breakfast 😋

Lovely and cozy café at the back of a shop, and it has an outdoor area as well. Plenty of "meals" of the day, so you can expect something different each time you go in.

Fabulous food, lovely staff and great atmosphere. Dog friendly as well. The cake selection was mouth watering and my sandwich was delicious served with a fresh side salad. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

Lovely café with a wide selection of delicious cakes and snacks. Came in for a business chat and for lunch and although it was quite busy, it did not feel uncomfortable and we were able to chat happily without being interrupted. Also, a lovely all day full English breakfast served from 09:00-16:00. Very highly recommended and will return again soon!

Enjoy this place, good to meet up with friends. Accessibility - reasonably good, negotiate your way through the gift shop, tables a bit close, but can acces. Level entrance. Sorry, did not check the loos thus time Car Parks (free) - near by. Come in just for a cake, drink or meal. Staff (and customers) very friendly

Excellent coffee locally roasted at this cafe which is at back of a gift shop. You need to park at the free Unicorn car park and walk 200 yards down a busy street to access the cafe. Pleasant staff and functional indoor tables with some outdoor seating.

Another wonderful experience here this afternoon. Very excited to have spotted apple and berry crumble on the menu! However I was very hungry and had a vegetarian breakfast... delicious mushrooms! But then couldn’t resist the crumble so asked if I could take some home! This was prepared for us while I looked around the shop.. I couldnt believe it when my husband came back with a tub of crumble.... and the custard too!! I wasn’t expecting that!! Thankyou x Such great people, service and of course the food. See you soon x

Lovely welcoming cafe situated at the back of a wonderful gift shop. Service was good as was the food, whether you want breakfast, quick snack or puds it has everything.

Excellent food & coffee in a welcoming setting

What a pleasant suprise, you walk through the shop and enter the cafe. Plenty of seating plus the option of being outside of you want, with a great sized pot of tea (plus it's leaves not a bag) and the sandwiches was lovely (probably the best coronation chicken sandwich I've had). WARNING!! When you go up to order your confronted with so many gorgeous cakes just tempting you. agh! Friendly service, well priced and we'll be back

Great little tea room which does everything from breakfast to lunch and afternoon teas. Great coffee served and a good choice of home made cakes. The courtyard is very pleasant with umbrellas to protect you from the sun. Staff helpful and pleasant.
