We came here whilst on a nostalgic trip to the illuminations as my husband had fond memories of the best fish and chips in Blackpool from his childhood . Very disappointed! The food was average but the service terrible. Waited 35 minutes. The two young men serving were very apologetic and worked hard but the restaurant clearly came first. I actually was told the next fish were ours only to see the middle aged woman (who I assume was in charge) take them for an inhouse order instead! Her attitude was terrible, everyone else working there apologised apart from her. Would suggest a change in management if The Cottage wants to return to the high standards and reputation of its past in the highly competitive 'fast' food outlet world of today.

We decided to visit yesterday after a family day trip to Lytham for a birthday, having been here a few times in previous years we were really looking forward to it. We had pre-booked a table for 7pm and arrived at exactly that time. Upon arriving we had a 10 minute wait before being given our table, which was not a problem, our order was then quickly taken. This is where everything went downhill. We had to wait a full hour before we received our food, and then had to chase all the drinks. One of which was a Budweiser but only upon chasing was I told they had none left and the only other option was a can of Carling, I declined and settled for a soft drink. The party member whose birthday this meal was for didn’t receive their food, and no apology was given. The fish were awful, grossly undercooked with raw batter. The pie bases were extremely soggy, presumably as a result of being microwaved. The entire service was like something out of Fawlty Towers it was so shockingly bad. Nothing was said by our party before leaving, the evening had been soured enough already without us adding to the negativity, so we paid our bill and left. We won’t be returning in the future.

We stopped here tonight on our way home from Blackpool Zoo after googling best fish and chips, they came up as 5* sit in with a licence which meant my husband could have a beer as well, wish I hadn’t. We arrived and was quickly shown to a table we were given menus and we asked for a beer to which they said they couldn’t serve alcohol there was a problem with the licence, that was fine we ordered a pot of tea. We ordered 1 small fish & chips special 2 medium fish & chips special and 2 children’s chips and nuggets. The 2 children’s meals arrived with the small fish and chips and my daughter-in-law immediately went to cut the toddlers chips to cool them they were Luke warm which is fine for a 2 year old I then started my small fish and chips again the chips were Luke warm like they had been left on the plate for quite a while, when they brought the 2 medium meals the chips were fine. I said to the waitress they were not hot enough she took the whole meal back to the kitchen then came back and asked if I wanted the fish changing I said no just hot chips will be fine, next minute she was back with my plate with my fish and peas on and said I will bring the chips when they finish cooking them, wow wow wow, by the time they brought the chips a good 5 mins later I had been picking at a fish which was now also going cold. Would not recommend at all just an expensive everyday fish &chip shop, the show business photos from the 70s were good to peruse though.

My friend and I attempted to come here for some dinner, as I'd heard a lot of things about it. When we got there, despite it saying on Google that it was open, it was actually closed. We showed up during opening hours, but all we were told was "unforeseen circumstances". This needs to be looked at, to avoid other people being left disappointed. However, if it was open as stated online, I would pop in and try the food.

This was a family trip for Fish and Chips to celebrate a birthday. The staff were warm, welcoming and very attentive. The sit in restaurant attached to the chip shop is quaint, well maintained and very clean. The food was absolutely excellent and the accompaniments to the main meals,hot drinks, bread and butter etc., is a real bonus.

I went to the Cottage yesterday evening....(As a Local of the town for 60 Years_) I wish I had not bothered ! I ordered large Fish, which I waited for over 35 Minutes. The fish was Cremated ! I could not believe how over cooked it was. I literally had to bin it when I arrived home. 'VERY DISAPOINTED' I will never go again after this experience.

Poorly cooked chips with eyes still in the potatoes and an over battered fish. Been going to the cottage for 40 years on visits to blackpool never again definitely gone downhill. Service in the restaurant was reasonable about the only good thing i can say

Went there to get fish and chips there was a special odldfer of large Hake chips and peas £8 The staff were very friendly and was served straight away even though there was a small que. I have to say they were the best fish and chips I've ever eaten .Red hot and so tasty exceptional value will def go there again.Thank you.

We have been here several times over the years as a family and have found the food, service and price consistently good. The staff are so attentive and friendly and the food was freshly made to order. Unlike other restaurants, The Cottage haven't cynically hiked their prices in recent times which is refreshing and makes them good value given the size of portion you get. Their reputation is well deserved!

Just been for fish and chips today Sunday 22nd November 2023. The lady that served us was so customer focused I actually told her how lovely she was, which is nice to see these days. Hope the owner passes this on to her. The food was excellent. Will be returning regularly was fantastic and very good value for the quality of the food.

Called in Friday 20th Oct waited so long ask for my money back.shouldnt ask for payment up front then expect to wait so long.there was a booking for 20 people in the restaurant at the time. These people call once a year.tina the manager ignored 3 locals so long.priotise people who come every week.disrepectful ?

We arrived at 17:15 on a Saturday afternoon in October. Blackpool town centre was heaving, however, The Cottage was fairly quiet with numerous empty tables. We were shown to our table and told that there was a waiting time of 30 minutes. This was fine as we did not have to be in Blackpool until 7.55pm for a pre-booked trip on the illuminations tram. We assumed, wrongly, that the 30 minute waiting time was for food, not the amount of time we waited for our order to be taken. When we finally made our order we got told that waiting time for fish was 40 minutes. Numerous diners came in seeing if they had a table and were left standing by the door waiting for staff to acknowledge their presence. I was sat by the kitchen and I could hear, the woman who appeared to be in charge shouting at the staff, hardly a professional dining establishment. While waiting, for what felt like ann eternity for the food to arrive we received our bread and butter. A few moments later the woman who we think was in charge came to bring us more bread and butter and when we politely said that we had some already asked if we wanted some more. When we refused this she took them away in a stroppy manner and gave them to another table. 52 minutes after ordering the food arrived. This was nearly an hour and a half after arriving to get two portions of fish and chips! Every diner who then entered was told that there was a 45 minute wait for fish. Which we could not understand as there were quite a few empty tables. We have been visiting here for 10 years and it is usually much busier than this with no waiting time. The woman who appeared to be in charge was telling fellow diners how busy it was. It wasn’t busy, just badly organised, chaotic even. Trying to see staff to chase up our order was a challenge as they all seemed to be away from the dining area. On entry there was only person in the take away section with 2 or 3 in there on leaving. When we did finally leave we were late for our pre-booked trip . We will never be visiting here again, which is a shame because every visit to Blackpool was not complete without a visit to The Cottage.

So having seen this on the TV a few weeks ago, we decided to give the cottage a visit. Not a warm welcome from the staff, sat inside, found waitress to be rude. I only eat cod, so the choice was either small or large. Dinner came out, batter was greasy, fish looked undercooked & was tasteless. I won’t be travelling the 92mile round trip for this place. All the best for the future.

We have been visiting The Cottage for over 30 years on our visits back to my hometown of Blackpool. A visit to The Cottage has always been an exciting experience for my now grown up children. Yesterday’s experience was sadly was the last one. We had booked a table but on arrival “The Hostess” barked at my friend “HAVE YOU BOOKED A TABLE?” What happened to a pleasant meet and greet to your customers? I said we had booked and gave in the name,. We were shown to our table and given menus. After about 20 minutes someone came to take our orders and we were told that there was a 35 minute wait which we said was fine. After 1 HOUR of waiting we asked where our food was, the waiter went off to check and came back saying it’s just being plated up” 15 minutes later our food finally arrived. We were on the verge of waking out by this stage. We began to tuck in as we were now, starving hungry. We all noticed that the fish batter was very greasy, but on eating the fish they inside was chewy. We all opened our fish up and the batter inside was RAW and inedible. I ended up just scooping the fish out, which itself was only just cooked. My daughters Steak Pudding was all dry on the inside like it had been sitting around for a while. In all an unpleasant experience in a place that used to be welcoming and served fantastic fish & chips. I suppose the lack of people queuing outside on a busy Saturday night for takeaway should have been a warning sign. We used to have to fight our way past scores of people waiting for takeaway but last night there was just one chap sat waiting. That speaks volumes I suppose. Such a shame.

Have been here many times with no complaints. Tonight we arrived told 20 min wait for fish, ordered and then told 35 min wait for fish, at 1 hour we asked where our food was, we'd already been served the drinks that came with the meal 35mins earlier. Meal arrived batter thick and under cooked ate what fish we could find and left batter, paid bill and left. Not sure we will be going again extremely disappointed.

OK its old, it has history and established many years but overrated and judging by the reviews it seems the case. Take away and a ten minute drive home. Large cod (nothing smaller available) enormous but batter crisp on the outside but underdone in the middle of the portion and the fish slightly undercooked. Chips ok (just) and tartar sauce very good. Not a bad effort but I would have expected better. The service was excellent so no comment on that but I can understand why others frustration fall short of this. I noticed no comments on peoples concerns so improve when these are addressed.

Absolutely wonderful from the moment you walk in the staff are so helpful and nice our meal was amazing we will be back thank you 😊

There is not enough room for me to tell you all my experience at the cottage only that my friend and I will never go again. The main problem is with young inexperienced staff.

Had good expectations. However waited 20 minutes before order taken, then it had to be repeated, told tap water not available ( which is illegall for a licenced premesis) and we had ordered wine as well and coffee ( decaf not available) . Then after another 5 min we were told the meal would take 40 minutes. Needless to say we left.. It might be the oldest but must surely be the worst for service. Can't rate the food but not going back to try!!!!

Each had a tasty Mrs. Quinn's in the restaurant, great value meal & Tina & her staff couldn't be nicer. Seems like some of the recent negative reviews are from someone or other with an axe to grind or you could say with a chip on their shoulder.

3 of us went for a meal on Monday- goodness me. Paul and Geoff had the fish platter, I have never seen so much food for the price. The waitress was so kind and helpful and looked after us so well. I think you could feed 4 with the platter, I had the small plate fish, chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a drink for a fiver - anyone would be satisfied. If you love fish and have a good appetite give it a go - bargain of the century

I came to the cottage chippy for lunch with my mum . We sat in the restaurant and we both had the Lite bite special. What a bargain £5.00 for fish, chips and peas, Bread& butter and a drink.The fish was cooked perfectly and the chips were lovely. Also the waitress that served us was well mannered and polite. The worst fish and chips I have ever had, more batter than fish, chips were crunchy like crisps, some chips were under cooked, fish was very greasy, they used far too much paper to wrap the food up, very disappointed won't be going again

12/7/21This is the second time we’ve been here for takeaway food while being on holiday and for the second time again the fish was just terrible.Smelt awful, tasted sour, dry as a bone.Batter looked like water when it was being made and barely coated our fish. Even the girl on the till asked if it was lightly battered to which the other girl frying just said oh it’s because we’re running out of it and I don’t wanna get anymore.When we actually went to take a bite it was like it had been sat there for days.Only saving grace was the good Customer service and the Chips and gravy.

This is my first review but I feel compelled to write it due to the other negatives I have read.I have been a regular customer of the cottage for over 30 years and have never had cause to complain.The price is always good as you are paying for quality.The staff over the years have been polite and friendly.I have seen many changes in the restoration of the building and staff but one thing is always constant and that is my enjoyment of the fish and chips.

The Cottage has a great history in Blackpool of serving great Fish and chips but unfortunately has gone way down hill now.We decided to use this evening as our usual chip shop was shut.What we were given was possibly the worst tasting Chips I have ever had in my life so much so it all went in the bin. Terrible food, portions and astronomical prices.A chip shop living off its name serving up woeful food for rip off prices.Avoid at all costs.

Booked here after watching it on tv, travelled 170 miles, five and a half hours to get here for the weekend, arrived at restaurant and shown to our table, waitress came to take our order but we were then told they had no cod left, not being funny but a fish restaurant and takeaway should not run out the most popular product.

Greasy batter and the chips were too thick and certainly not the best ive had. Very disappointed. However at a £10 for 2 fish and chips and 2 drinks it was very good value.

A while since I went back in January/Feb, but have never experienced anything like it. Staff not wearing masks properly, ignorant and just ignoring you when you want a specific requirement. Everything seems too much trouble. Really don't know why this chippy is so popular, they seem to treat staff very badly, shouting orders at them. Food OK, but everything else puts me off.

I fancied fish and chips for my dinner on Good Friday, so decided to come here after several years of excellent service and food. Never again! I can’t speak for the food, because after almost 30 minutes of waiting for my order to be called (you pre-order fish from surly staff on arrival) I gave it up as a bad job after seeing people coming in after me, having their orders taken, and then leaving. They were all called by the first names, so clearly they’re known to the staff and given preferential treatment. At almost £20 for takeaway for two people it’s no longer a cheap meal, and the new owners (apparently) need to train their staff in customer service. I certainly won’t be going back there. I’ve only given it one star as you can’t give nothing.

We have been 3 times now and the fish is really nice its just a shame that the inside of the batter is soggy. less batter i think is the answer ! !! Then it should be as crispy inside as it is outside. Staff pleasant.

Not had a chippy dinner for years, so on a whim decided to ring round. A friend suggested The Cottage, and am I glad he did? The food was as good as eating in, nice and hot - and fresh. We will definitely be ordering again, but apologies for it taking so long to discover you.

I’ve seen so many good reviews about the cottage, however when I went to try the ‘amazing’ fish and chips, I was disgusted, masks below the noses, one of the women who was working (blonde) kept snapping at the rest of the staff while customers were watching, I would rather eat out of a bin than here, I had to walk out and go to my local chippy to eat some proper food. one of the women working had holes in her gloves but carried on touching the food and then itching her hair, disgraceful. DO NOT EAT HERE!!

The food at the cottage is just wonderful! Couldn’t fault it at all. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. I must admit the hake was beautifully cooked with golden batter and the chips were cooked perfectly. Well done the cottage will definitely be coming back soon!!

Not bad i guess, Not surprised to hear of the recent fire though with it being a mausoleum complete with the mortuary slab that guy fawkes must have been laid out on at one time. Hope the new management is better than the last save the whale advocate that used to roll around the premises from what i hear. The fish could have been hotter but the lemon juice that i sprinkled on the fish was probably a contributory factor in it going cold so quick. The gypsy queen that was behind the counter was very pleasant for the mosely part to our faces and comfortable in her elevated position and pleasant to the customers faces at least and can easily double up as a bouncer had it been a nightclub not a restaurant. the negative reviews on here speak for themselves.

We haven't been since the new management took over and the restaurant was closed off and on, so there were a few wasted trips. However it was a welcome return to form. Enjoyed the hake, which was not at all overcooked thankfully. Batter was thick and crisp but a bit on the greasy side. They still do homemade tartare sauce which is different but very nice regardless. Overall slightly more expensive than other restaurants, but the helpings are generous. A return trip definitely on the cards.

Having visited here last year this was a return visit and can happily say was just as good if not better spot on meal for 3 people great portions and value for money for quality fresh cooked fish and chips in a nice environment will be returning

Have eaten here before and return visit did not disappoint. You can’t beat quality, freshly cooked food at a reasonable price with generous portions. Gets busy - so book to be sure of a table at the time you need to eat.

This restaurant is worth seeking out. It is family friendly and has dishes for children. We had excellent cod and chips which was quite cheap and very tasty. One of us has a gluten-free diet, the restaurant provided steamed fish, which was very good.

Visited here tonight to get a medium cod and mushy peas to take out. Very disappointed at the size of the fish and the batter was very soggy. Peas were ok.

A warm and welcoming cosy fish restaurant and take away well worth going out of your way to visit. The staff are always pleasant and welcoming, the food is amazing! Fish is so fresh it melts in your mouth, the chips are piping hot and so soft and fluffy inside, the manager explained they’re blanched first then double cooked to get that lovely texture. Scampi was flavoursome and hot, served with lemon and home made tartare sauce. Large pot of tea. Oh, and it’s relatively cheap too, kind in the purse! We usually visit The Cottage 2 or 3 times a year when enjoying weekends at the coast.

I was here in may and left a bad review the manageress asked me to get in touch which I did and told her of my concerns she was so sorry I did not enjoy my food and explained they had a problem with their frying pans which has now been sortedand asked me back on my next visit to blackpool virginia gave us replacement fish and chips foc and I am happy to say it was back to this shops usual standard lovely thanks virginia see you in may 2019

We changed our Monday night chippy from Raffles to The Cottage as The Cottage was open on the Bank Holiday and we have since been converted!

We popped in for a chippy tea after a busy day on Friday 24/08/2018.

Came here one Saturday afternoon with my husband & mother in law as she recommended the cottage to us as she had been before. Its a lovely quaint little cottage and very cosy and welcoming. The fish & chips are delicious and the portion sizes are generous too. Theres lots of photos on the walls of famous people that have visited the cottage in the past which is quite interesting to look around i enjoyed the food here and i will be returning again in the near future.

Having eaten here many times in the past we both commented that the food was average.

One of the best chippies I have ever tried plus you can eat in if you like. Everything is cooked fresh to order and I would especially recommend the Home-Made Steak Puddings that are amazing but again so is the fish they cook

I have frequented the cottage many times over the years and it’s always enjoyable. But the main thing that keeps me coming back is the homemade tartar sauce. You should sell it in the super markets! Highly recommended

We visited a few months ago and we are in. The restaurant is small but cosy. It is so busy so be prepared for a short wait. However my number was taken to let me know when my table was available. We were seated and ordered quicly. The service was good but the food was better. Fresh, tasty and lots of it. Highly recommended!!!

Well I have travelled far and wide but this place stands out for one simple reason, it is the BEST we have ever had, great fish and the chips where perfect and if you like tartar sauce there is none better, I wouldn't even entertain going anywhere else there's no need to, so do yourself a favour live a little.

Best fish ever! I took my mother there for her birthday. It was lovely. The staff was very nice and made a fuss over us. They made my mum so happy. The cakes are so good. :-) I have read the other reviews for the cottage, and I am shocked! Really I don't know what the problem is. Everyone in my family loves it. But I mostly like the décor. Old fashioned but beautiful. I will keep going back and I would recommend it to anyone.

Me and my friends visited the cottage(takeaway) on the 11/6/18 as we entered we was greeted with friendly staff! Who was keen to help out on what was on there special board! All the prices was very reasonable my friend ordered the fish bite meal consisting off 10 fish bites, plus medium chips(more like a large) and a choice of peas , beans , curry or gravy! The meal could of feed 2-3 people for the price off £6,50! I had a plaice meal and my other friend had pie, chips and gravy and all was so delicious! Well worth a vistet will be back again

Been here quite a few times and have always found it to be fantastic. The staff are always friendly and professional. Fish is cooked fresh to order and the chips are the best I've ever eaten, no other chips even come close in quality to those from the cottage. There is something for everyone on the menu and it is always excellent value for money. When I have been in, myself and the others with me have always found that staff genuinely care about providing good service and good food. The Cottage is my favourite chippy whether it's for a restaurant meal or take away fish and chips and I will definitely keep returning.

After a bad experience a year ago here, we decided to try it again. The 'cash only, no cards' signs was a shock and meant a detour to the cashpoint. We had 2x medium cod & chips, gravy and curry sauce to takeout. All staff pleasant and order came quickly with no issues, place wasnt busy but a few people in both the takeaway and restaurant. Upon arriving home we discovered the first problem was 2 tubs of curry sauce and no gravy. Not a major issue but annoying. The fish was awful. A thick very pale batter and the fish was very thin and crumbly! It had no taste whatsoever, but how they managed to undercook batter and overcook the fish it covered must be a skill in itself! It was supposed to be cod but that was not cod, i come from a local fishing family so know what cod is! They either bought very cheap frozen stuff or their fish supplier is ripping them off. Fish isnt supposed to crumble, but this just disintergrated. No point driving the 2 miles to for a refund, so we chucked it and ordered chinese instead. The incident a year ago was over the poor quality of the fish, we did drive back that time to be greeted by 'i knew you'd be back' and got a refund of the 1 fish we took back rather than the whole bill.

I cant get my head round the last few reviews as I use the cottage at least twice weekly and never ever have I had any issues. Staff are lovely and really helpful and they have some great offers on there daily updated specials board. Best chippy in Blackpool in my eyes. To the people who have wrote *bad* reviews... are you actually serious? The Cottage every time for me.

This has to be the best chippy by far. We call most Fridays for a fish bite meal and they have to be the best fish bites I’ve ever had. Great value top quality friendly staff what more could you ask for.

I visited The Cottage with my wife on the 04/06/18 and my wife wrote a review. I would first like to mention that I have never been disappointed with The Cottage before and in fact have recommended it many times to our friends. I always order large haddock lightly battered which has always been large and cooked to a high standard - however - not this time it was very small. I have to say I was very disappointed with the managers reply. The 'domestic' she mentions we were having was myself saying the assistant said we ordered a large fish and a medium one and my wife saying that no she ordered a large fish and a medium chips , yes we was indeed both tired and probably grumpy - it's allowed - after driving straight to The Cottage from the airport after our flight home from our holiday for our long awaited for takeaway tea! My wife did order a steak pudding and I clearly heard her clarify with the assistant "that's steak not steak and kidney"! We was not given the steak pudding complimentary ... our bill came to £11. 70 so whoever' s order you checked on our return for the steak pudding was clearly not ours. On the subject of our food being cold - maybe a bit harsh - as it would not have been if we had not have to return for the steak pudding, however I can clarify that I tasted the pudding & it was definitely lukewarm ....regardless of you ' steaming for a min of 3 hours and temperature tested.' The chips were most certainly not not ' beautiful' regardless of how you cooked them, what temperature or what oil you used! I would not normally write a review , however in this instance I feel it is justified as our feelings were brought to your attention before we left The Cottage and I am extremely angry that you falsely state we did not order the steak pudding and received it complimentary.

If I could rate this place lower than 1 I would do. The fish which was supposed to be large was was equivalent to small in most places. The chips had been precooked and then warmed up again. Not worth the journey I will stick with the Seafarers in St.Annes which I give 5 out of 5.

We visited The cottage for a takeaway tea on 04/06/18 - we are local and have been many times before - we were so disappointed! We ordered a large haddock lightly battered, 1 medium chips, 1 steak pudding, 2 mushy peas and 1 curry sauce. The haddock was so small I questioned if it was large to be told "yes it's large it shrinks when you have it lightly battered" .... we have always ordered lightly battered and it has never 'shrunk' before! The lady serving us asked if we wanted salt & vinegar on our chips and we told her we didn't. A few minutes later another lady asked if we wanted salt & vinegar on our chips, we told her we have already been asked this - they were already wrapped and was she sure we have the right order - she repeated our order and it was correct. We took our food home to find that our steak pudding was missing ..... back to the shop we went to be told "oops sorry"! We then went back home and threw our now cold and smallest/ thinnest fish in the world, chips that can only be described as 'scraps' and cold steak pudding peas and curry sauce in the bin!

went to the cottage on 9 /6 /2018 been before and it was great on this visit the fish and chips were terrible never had so much grease in a fish supper ,has this place changed hands?will never be back

We visited the cottage again this week, we are regular customers and have no complaints about the food although the staff appeared more abrupt than usual.

The Cottage is best chip shop in the local area. The fish and chips are always great and the service is always great!
