The Cornish Bakery in York

My boyfriend and I came for breakfast. I had the pistachio croissant and my bf had the vegan raspberry croissant - both so delicious. The best coffee we have had in York. The staff was so nice and considerate of dietary restrictions. Definitely will be a regular spot we go to whenever we visit York.

Beautiful food (specifically the croissants) with very friendly staff :)

What an absolute delight! The coffee was fantastic. Rich and flavourful without being in any way sour or bitter. Delicious. And we had the funniest conversation - including a round of handshaking - about the fact that a ‘white’ Americano does not exist. (I have created the term “Britishccino” for such an abomination, I give permission for you all to use it, you are very welcome.) They offer butter - the correct two pats, salted- and jam, for your croissant without needing to be asked. The pastries are very tasty. The seats are snug but comfortable. Overall, what delightful people! And the wonderful woman who served us is just a delight. I know her name, but to find out who she is yourself you will have to visit!

I'm a tourist in the city, I saw the pistachio croissant in the shop window and couldn't walk away, I bought one and an apple rhubarb cake for my partner. We couldn't decide which one is better ( i hate rhubarb but this surprised me) ! after our adventure today, we both felt like we wanted one more, so we almost ran back. we bought another 3-4 kinds of cakes. The customer service was nice, friendly and very helpful!

I recently visited this charming bakery and was absolutely blown away by their scones! They were perfectly baked—crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. The flavor was amazing, not too sweet, and just the right amount of richness. Whether you enjoy them plain or with jam and cream, these scones are simply the best I've had. A must-try for any pastry lover!

Best service ever by Lottie, I felt welcomed, just loved the way she chatted and smiled. The food is also excellent. My favorite breakfast place in York.

Called in over the weekend just to get some food with some friends to go and it was fabulous. It was very very busy but I could see that all the staff who were there worked overly hard to make everything amazing for us all, so thank you! We will be back soon.

Very nice coffee, delicious flavour. The Pistachio croissant was incredible, definitely popping in for one of those every time I visit York in future. Fabulous to see the coffee is fair trade as well, so we'll be stopping here for coffee before we go to Minster Gate books.

Charged us quite a lot for sitting in which is not a problem but not even having a sink or toilet is a problem especially after charging for sitting in! Also their food is like Lidl's. Cold. Never coming back.

I don’t know who owns this place but they have a staff attitude problem. The lady working there this afternoon around 2pm was very unkind to my sister. She’s only a teenager, came in to buy a croissant, she had a starbucks drink. There’s no sign anywhere that says you can’t bring outside drinks in. The lady didn’t let her sit inside after she paid for the pastry. Feels scammy and plain rude

While on a rainy day while on a city break our usual haunt was packed out so we visited this place. Nice drinks and treats, its mostly a place for pasties and pies but still a pleasure to visit. Nice staff. The tea didnt come with an extra pot of hot water but on request they do refill the pot when needed. Card payment only, i wouldn't normally have visited knowing this but we wanted a drink and something to eat, and i didnt know until we had already ordered, the sign is only tiny. My wife had a quiche, but for the price would have expected it to be warm rather than cold.

This review is long overdue and for that I am truly sorry - these guys are amazing. Their food is wonderful, and their customer service is out of this world amazing. They truly made a huge difference for us when we visited. Thank you so so so much for helping us celebrate our wee one’s birthday - you went above and beyond to get her something she can actually have (lactose intolerant) and the candle you added was a touch we had never expected. Thank you for making it such a memorable birthday, we will honestly never forget it.

Lovely pastries both savoury and sweet. Service has been fantastic each time i've been in, for both eat in and take away. Space for eating in is a little cramped, but they do a great job with the space they have.

Absolutely incredible food, and the best service by Lottie. She was so warm and friendly, and extremely helpful advising on all the delicious goods! Couldn’t recommend highly enough, excellent service and I look forward to coming back!

Popped in at 9am on Saturday and was greeted by the kindest good morning and a beautiful smile Lottie is an incredible asset to your company, her coffee was hot hot hot just how we like and she chatted away to my husband while she made it. Yummy food and great service by the ever fabulous Scarlett. I’m a big fan of the Cornish Pastie and these are the BEST I have ever had the pleasure of gobbling up. Try the steak and blue cheese pastie. You won’t be disappointed.

I had a fantastic experience. The bakery offers an array of fresh, tasty pastries🥐 that are simply delightful. The cherry and almond croissant was very 😋😋. The strong, robust coffee perfectly complements the baked goods, making for an enjoyable treat. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing break. Lottie gave excellent customer service.

My family was unkindly treated by the young man of the staff minutes ago, just because I had a jucie for my three-year-old son and he insisted THREE TIMES that the child could not touch inside the store. It os a child… Meaningless rules and we are not coming back

A wonderful little place. I got a Cornish pasty, carrot cake and earl grey. They were all fantastic. The staff were very polite and welcoming. Would eat here again.

Stopped in for our first experience of pasties from this establishment. We purchased 2 x Large Original Cornish Pasties, 1 x Vegetable and 1 x Bacon, Leek & Cheese which was mine. The shop is small and busy, but that’s always a good thing! Sign of good food! We ordered and I enquired if they take Blue Light Cards. I was told ‘Yes - but only the physical card’. This was quite frustrating as I don’t carry the card - the app issues you with a digital copy that can be verified through the live app service, so there’s no need for a plastic card. I was refused the discount regardless. Despite this, we took our pasties to the nearby park and tucked in. They were absolutely delicious and piping hot. I’d definitely return and purchase again.

We came by this lovely bakery and cafe by chance and it was a real strike of luck. The staff were simply the warmed and loveliest people (specially Lottie) and the baked goods & coffee shop as expectational. They were also very welcoming to our little puppy, offering some delicious treats and water. Highly recommended popping by you when in York- we will leave full and satisfied and with a smile in your face.

Just popped in for a croissant and coffee to take away. Lovely quality bakes, freshly served. Julia who served us was friendly and knowledgeable, we left with a fruit scone as well to eat out during our stay !

Hot milk with Americano apparently not allowed as was hot water to accompany the tea .Not good experience

Despite me popping in 15 minutes before dining closed, Lottie was incredibly lovely and let me sit down to enjoy my croissant and Yorkshire tea. Not only was there a sweet little puppy in the dining area as well, the whole staff seemed very calm and friendly, and it made the atmosphere really enjoyable while I enjoyed my tea and a good book! If I'm ever back in York I will definitely be popping by again!

i was severed by lottie and she was really friendly, i don’t usually like doing things like this by myself but i felt comfortable doing it here, my coffee was really nice and so was my cheese scone and just generally a nice place to be, thanks guys 😁 x

What can I say! As soon as I walked in Lottie immediately remembered us from our last trip and even what we ordered the last time we were there, Lottie is a true credit to your company and would love to see her recognised for her dedication to her job and the customer service being above and beyond, we will 100% be back again to have breakfast as my grandchildren requested that’s where we went. Thank you Lottie for all your hard work, you can truly see she loves her job which in today’s age you don’t get to see that very often. We look forward to visiting you again soon 😀

We popped in for a coffee and some cakes and we were not disappointed! We were served by Lottie who was lovely and a very kind and knowledgeable host, explaining to us what was in each pasty! 5/5, would definitely recommend.

6 of us turned up to eat in. It's a cozy place, good food, kids welcome & fantastic service from Lottie. Everyone enjoyed the food. Between us we had a few different pasties, kids had sausage rolls. Sausage roll must have been good as my little girl made me skip my way out with her!

I came to the Cornish Bakery as I've walked past it on many occasions and stopped to look at the delights in the window. Last Friday I was on leave from work and decided to call in for a spot of breakfast prior to the shops opening. Upon entering the shop, I was greeted by an exceptionally friendly member of staff, Lottie, who helped me choose the best raspberry croissant I've had. I had a lovely time taking in the ambience of the shop on a peaceful Friday morning. I left the shop certain that I would return, both due to the scrumptiousness of my breakfast, but also how friendly the staff are, in this case, Lottie, who radiates positive energy and is a real ambassador for The Cornish Bakery. I will definitely return!

Hello! We’ve been here multiple times over the years but this is the first time I’ve left a review. We ordered two large traditional pasties, a chocolate milkshake and a flat white coffee. The food, as it has always been, is delicious and reasonably priced, especially when you consider the quality! Our service today (22/03/2024) by Lottie was excellent! She was really lovely and treated us to brilliant customer service! Thanks again Lottie, for the wonderful breakfast :)

We was served by possibly the sweetest lady I have ever met called Lottie. She was full of smiles which started out day off visiting York amazingly, she was so friendly and amazing with my little girls and made lots of conversation. Every customer that came in after was treated the exact same and our pastries was super tasty (my little girls had more) You have a great lady working with you there, she is enough to brighten anyone up on a down day or like us, start your day off amazing. Really enjoyed my brunch. Young lady who served me, lottie, was really pleasant and cheerful, made for a very welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a bacon and leek pasty and a white chocolate mocha. Both were divine and a right treat! It's nice to thank people when you really mean it! I was contemplating buying another for the trip home but didn't think my waist would thank me.

Arrived here very early and even then we where greeted with the biggest smile, we sat in and had some fresh out the oven pasties, our hot chocs and coffee where spot on. As it was quiet Lottie popped over asked how everything was and we all got chatting. She had a badge about Autism so we asked her what work life was like. She explained how amazing her team are with her and how understanding they are with Autism and bi-polar, it's a shame others aren't so understanding. It was a pleasure to meet someone who loves their job even at 8 in the morning. Lottie is a credit to your company anyone would be lucky to have her!

it's unfortunate because we didn't have a bad experience till this morning, the food is lovely but the lady that was on shift this morning, not so much... the pastries we wanted were too hot to serve so we left for 15 minutes and then came back, when we arrived, she was talking to a co-worker for a good 5 mins before we got served. then when she saw it was us she rolled her eyes and turned to her coworker saying "you have to serve them." with a massive huff, very confused to this reaction as we didn't do anything. just felt very unwelcoming which is a shame as we hadn't had anything bad to say about this place till now.

Went in and asked for coffee and toilet. Not told until after we had paid for drinks that they have no toilet. Then coffee was like warm and got told to sit down but then shouted back over to get your own coffee. No service...

Visited the Coney Street branch in York City Centre. My mum and I had fantastic service from Lottie, great coffee/pastries too!

Went in today for some pasties and drinks and was incredible as always. The chilli pasty I had was incredible and the service by Oliver and the other girl didn’t get her name that was there was nice as always.

The staff are UN friendly and they expulsion me because I steady about more than one hour although i am a touristi and i was paid for the food and set in take your food away and Maintain your dignity

We were served by Lottie, super bubbly and welcoming and made sure to ask about milk preferences and even if I wanted cinnamon on my chai or not! Amazing vegan options as well. Highly recommend when in York!

We were given a lovely welcome by Lottie behind the counter who guided us to the best pastries for a mid morning snack. Pan chocolates and an amazing almond croissant with cherry filling coupled with superb flat white and a couple of hot chocolates filled...

Served by Lottie, very lovely girl. Dog friendly cafe, provided free dog treats. Lovely food would definitely go again!

Saw the amazing desserts in the window and had to go back to sample the cinnamon role with icing topped with pistachios and the Cornish pudding, cos on your birthday one pudding is just not enough!!! We were served by Lottie who brightened our day...

A lovely place. Welcomed through the door by the staff, always a good sign. Had a light lunch. Brie and Cranberry Brioche, cheese and bacon croissant and a pastel de nata. All lovely. The pastel de nata was so creamy, one of the best I've ever had. Took some cheese straws away, they were absolutely fantastic. Highly recommend this tiny independent in a sea of big corporate coffee shops. One note, they are very tiny so only a handful of seats and no customer toilet, but forgive them that, they are tiny!

We only we into this cafe for coffee which was very nice but only warm I had a cappuccino and my wife had flat black . Her's was hot the pastries looked fantastic but we had only had a full English at the hotel. There were on 3 of us in the cafe / bakers and it wasn't too warm in there ....it was snowing outside and the main door was open because of safety regulations so the shop was cold inside and we were sitting at the back ...The 2 staff were very friendly only the cold made me give this cafe/bakers a lower score.

Popped into this little cafe for breakfast one day while we were visiting York. Beautiful pastries - the chocolate twist was amazing! Enjoyed it so much we came back the next morning! Really wanted to pop back for some of the carrot cake which looked...

Really lovely, young polite lass working here, pleasant and welcoming. It was busy and popular when I called in with an ongoing stream of customers. Eat in or take out. Range of Cornish pasties and also some yummy bakes, very good range and tasty too. I was tempted by several but plumped for a hefty slab of Cornwall cake, so I'll just have to revisit to try their other treats, awww shucks, quelle chore, ha. This veggie friendly slab contained blueberries, raspberries etc and was good. Cinnamon on my hot chocolate too. Very obliging staff.

Lottie was such a joy to speak to. She made a personal connection with me as she filled my order which brightened the experience. I love their pasties, but the customer service is an added bonus.
