The Cornerhouse in Cheshire West and Chester

Visiting the UK from Canada with my husbans and decided to stop into this little bar/restaurant as we were walking passed because we noticed what looked like a poutine on someones table. We walked inside, and low and behold there was a sign for poutines. Sceptical, because we werent sure how authentic it would be (as you need squeeky cheese curds for it to be a REAL poutine.) We decided to order it as we were informed the chef is Canadian, and he sourced the real stuff! YUP! It was delicious, and squeeky. Good price as well. Nice small beer on tap selection. Lovely staff, very attentive, polite and they seemed to be enjoying themselves,which is nice to see! Recommend you stop by for a drink and a poutine! Great Job to The Cornerhouse!

We recently booked out the function room above the bar on a Friday night. This was for a work party and Sophie, Ben and the rest of the staff couldn’t have been better. Initial dates, and a full list of FAQs made the booking easy and upfront. They have clearly hosted many events and this comes across, making it a very stress free arrangement. We had live music and DJ equipment too, which the Cornerhouse let set up the night before. Service on the night was great, the venue was atmospheric and the acoustics were spot on too. Recommend the establishment (and their sister bar The Cellar too).

Ordered 2 pints of 4% cask ale and a packet of crisps, and the member of staff serving tried to charge me over £18. Quite clearly a mistake on the till (due to rotating beer names), but before I could even discuss and explain, another member of staff partially overheard and interfered, and tried to esculate the situation by hastily running to call the manager to the bar, exclaiming that somebody was "refusing to pay" (not the case as I was just questioning the price breakdown). By the time the manager arrived, the girl serving had realised her error. No problem with the genuine mistake from the member of staff serving which could have been easily resolved, however the antagonistic attitude of the other member of staff, is probably not best suited to a licensed venue. Shame this spoilt my experience, as the selection of beers and pub was otherwise very good.

We held my daughters birthday party upstairs in the lovely function room. Sophie was amazing from the start, always on hand to answer questions. On the day we were able to get into the room at 12.15pm to decorate which gave us plenty of time to get back and get ready. We opted for the house buffet which was just perfect and plentiful and there was a great selection on drinks. Big thank you to the bar staff on the night as they were just so lovely and friendly. All our guests commented how lovely the room was and how lovely the staff were as well. Thank you so much if I ever arrange another party in Chester The Cornerhouse will be my first point of call! :-)

I attended the pub on Sunday with friends to take part in the quiz. As normal we had a great night. Aki and Adam put on a testing quiz but with lots of humour. There were 4 real ales on and I plumped for an Oracle which went down very well. If real ale is not your choice of drink they have plenty of lager/cider etc to choose from and an excellent choice of wine. All in all this is a super pub to visit and for real ale drinkers a real treat. I'll certainly be back.

Fantastic pub, serving great food, great beers a large selection of gins and some great music. Oh and the Sunday night quiz is great fun. Staff are pretty amazing too.

I've come to frequent the bar regularly with friends due to the first class Sunday evening quiz that Adam and Aki host. This has also introduced me to the partnered Cellar Bar down the road, which I have also now started to frequent. The place has an excellent atmosphere whenever I have been in. The staff are always very helpful, friendly and engaging in rapport. There is a great selection of drinks on offer in addition to tasty bar snacks, in particular the platters! Location is also very good on the edge of Chester but near enough to the train station and city centre with a little walking.

Relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Love the quiz on Sunday. The pizzas are class too 😎

Great Sunday pub quiz and some nice beers

We come for the pub quiz every Sunday evening and always enjoy ourselves (even if our team is doing poorly of late). The drinks are well priced, the food and platters are great, it’s always warm and inviting, and the staff are nice. The quiz masters Adam and Aki are really friendly, funny, and all round good sports. 5/5 🤩

The Cornerhouse on City road is a brilliant pub that offer an excellent range of drink's and cheese and charcuterie's and this pub host quiz nights and live music.This brilliant pub is set in a mock-tudor building and this building looks amazing. This pub has a stripped-back interior thats got many interesting fixture's and feature's and superb seating options throughout it's whole interior and brilliant staff. On and off over the years we've visited this brilliant pub many times when this pub was called the Chester Hangman and then the Compass and it's still a great pub to visit if your in Chester. We went to here on our 2nd day in Chester and on our visit to this brilliant pub we had a few cask ales.The cask ales are fantastic in here and when we visited here we had a few glasses of Salopian brewery beers that were perfectly served and well priced. It's a superb pub that's located in a superb area of Chester and its a pub that is worth visiting if your around this area. (This is my 2nd review of the Cornerhouse). Opening Hours. Witnessed disgraceful behaviour from a member of staff. Customers came in with takeaway food. They was told not to eat in this pub bu security, I heard them apologise and put food away in takeaway bag. 2 minutes later staff member reached over rails and aggressively grabbed 4 drinks that was full & told 4 people to f!#king get out. Many people there was shocked by this behaviour. We will not be returning because of this.

Incredible Sunday Roast, 10 of us dined for a birthday roast. There was a special offer, 2 roasts & a bottle of wine. All the staff were wonderful & very accommodating. Food was fabulous & generous portions. Ben was lovely to deal with when making the booking & in person. Highly recommend here, not just for the roast. It’s a great venue.

A pub I always look forward to visiting on any trip to Chester I take is The Cornerhouse Pub,been here many times over the years, always had a good time and so it proved on our latest visit to here. A great looking pub, interior is superb, exposed brickwork, pine floors, cool iron work features, pubby decor and furnishings, a cool looking serving bar dominates the main room and there's plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub and all housed in a wonderful looking building, its just a really good pub to unwind in . We were here on a bitterly cold February afternoon, pub was busy with a great atmosphere, we had a study of their real ale's which I must say I was totally impressed with, in the end we both opted to have pale ale's from Salopian Brewery, these were served in excellent condition, we chilled out, warmed up and planned out the day ahead while sipping our pale ale's. The pale ale's served here were first class,golden, hoppy, bursting with taste, a delicious aroma and aftertaste with a smooth finish, a classic British pale ale served in a classic British pub, it was just so good being in such a lovely pub enjoying a quality brew and sat with my twin brother, best beer companion in the world. We both really enjoyed our pale ale's in here before we moved on and although our visit was only fleeting as on every other visit to The Cornerhouse Pub we had a great beer experience. The Cornerhouse Pub is easy to locate along City Road. Opening hours are; Monday to Sunday, midday till 11pm. A wonderful pub,one I highly recommend you seek out if you're in the area or planning a trip to this fascinating and historic Roman walled city.

We had such a great Saturday evening out. We had booked a table as there were ten of us and we were sitting by the dance floor. The live band was so good that we were up dancing all evening. Food was shared platters which were delicious and generous. Thank you for a lovely time and we will definitely be back. The live music is always worth coming for and it gets busy so get here early! A great venue for good food and drinks and great music.

What a great restaurant. The platters they have on the menu are excellent. We had the meat and cheese platter for 2 and it was so big we had to take some home and eat it the next day! there is also a deal for a platter and a bottle of house wine that is very reasonable. they also do pizzas that whilst we didn't have one they looked amazing

I booked The Cornerhouse for a surprise gathering for my boyfriend’s birthday. Sophie and the team helped me to pull this off. Everything from the communication, the venue, the staff and the food was amazing! Highly recommended! We will be visiting again

We had our engagement party in the room upstairs and it was lovely. Really easy to arrange, staff were really accommodating, we were able to go in earlier in the day to set up decorations. We had so many guest tell us what a nice evening and venue it was. It was especially useful to have a separate bar upstairs so our guests didn’t need to be in and out of the party. Would reccomend to anyone :)

I've been going to the Cornerhouse on a Monday night, for a beer and a pizza with friends, for about a year now, so I feel pretty qualified to write a review. The pub has a relaxed, cosy atmosphere on a Monday. There's always a friendly vibe, and the staff are ace, remembering us and our regular orders. There's a nice selection of beers on draft, and the pizzas are pretty good too, with a good selection of toppings available, and a well-nice dip. Yeah, overall, great spot, has a great atmosphere, great beer and scran. Pretty darn great. Recommended

I hold events at the Cornerhouse every Monday night and have done for the past year along popping down for the band and quiz nights. Great selection of beers and wines, foods fantastic (especially the roast dinner). Function room upstairs has great space, has its own bar and plenty of seating and dance floor space! Staff are polite and attentive, drink and food is fairly priced.

I’ve been going to the Cornerhouse on a regular basis for a long time. We organise events where we routinely take 25-30 people to see bands or for drinks and have done for over 5 years. They took our drinks from a table when we were dancing for 10 minutes. We complained as we spent £13 on drinks. The Barman was incredibly rude and Ben was even worse. We won’t hold any events there in the future and have cancelled the ones we have in calendar. Looking for a new location for our events that doesn’t have rude staff. Take your drinks in the dance floor we were told so di that if you go there or you’ll lose them.

Regulars at the Cornerhouse with many events organised for 25+ people. Tonight they took our drinks off our table whilst we were dancing for 20 minutes after we paid over £13 for two drinks. Apparently that was our fault as we should take full glasses on the dance floor. Barman aggressive towards us and Ben was incredibly rude. Won’t go back there personally and recommend take any drinks on the dance floor or you’ll be buying new ones. A shame as we have had lots of fun nights there. I’ve cancelled all our future events as for me customer service is incredibly important and I can’t be bothered with the potential hassle from people I take there if a problem. Time to try some of the new places in Chester now!

I love this place. The staff are lovely, the atmosphere is fabulous, doggy friendly and live music. The private hire room upstairs is also great.

Great for our club events. We use the function room upstairs, which has its own bar, and the in-house catering is very good.

Probably the best Sunday lunch I've had in Chester! And I've had quite a few! Simple menu, choice of 4 roasts, ( 1 veg) and a pudding for £20 . Excellent quality and tasty! Friendly staff and nice surroundings!

Had a surprise 50th party for my wife in the private room upstairs. Everything was perfect, the space is great along with the staff and the food. Sophie was brilliant and helped me no end with advice and support and I had a lot of questions. Everyone loved it and I would book it again in a heartbeat. Just make sure you book early 👍

I booked the upstairs of the Cornerhouse for my wife’s birthday party, and it was fantastic. All the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Before, during and after the event. Sophie was really helpful with all of the arrangements. Really good communication, stress free and straight forward. Emma was fantastic behind the bar all evening. Really attentive with all of the guests, they all commented on how fantastic she was. I’d highly recommend to anyone looking for a small space for an event 👍🏻

For a large looking pub it's quite small inside not a great of space to sit, the menu is quite limited as are the drunks selection, but on the plus side the staff are super friendly

We had the roast dinner yesterday, after the Chester Metric Marathon. The food was amazing, the place was clean, staff amazing and a great number of options in terms of drinks. We said we'd drive over from Liverpool to do again

Visited Chester for the weekend. Booked a table via text with really quick response. Both enjoyed Sunday roast (mixed with 3 meats) with delicious accompaniments. Friendly staff, affordable, quick service and everything tasted fresh and homemade. Ideal! ....and bonus points for the framed The Smiths 12' record by the bar!

The Cornerhouse is a nice environment to go for a pint and a Sunday dinner. The staff are friendly and the surroundings are really pleasant. Also the quiz night on Sunday is very well done. It helps that we just won it! 😂 A good Sunday night out! 😄

A first for me I've never tried pineapple beer before.

Absolutely gorgeous Sunday Roast today. We had the mixed meat plate with pork & lamb. Lovely homemade yorkshire pudding, fresh vegetables including tenderstem broccoli, carrots, parsnips, red cabbage, mangetout & a side of cauliflowers cheese, the best I've ever tasted! The roast potatoes were so gorgeously Crispy on the outside & fluffy on the inside & served with homemade sausage stuffing. Just beautiful. All the staff were so helpful. We were sharing this as not overly hungry & the chef offered to plate it up on 2 separate plates. I'm glad we did share as it was plenty for both of us! Lovely atmosphere with chilled music & a variety of seating including a comfy chair & sofa which we managed to get. Thankyou for a very chilled & gorgeous experience.

The Cornerhouse is brilliant friendly and welcoming place. The staff are professional, efficient and customer focused. There are seating areas to suit everyone, the food looks amazing, the cleanliness is top notch. The best I have visited in a long time. I popped in here just after arriving to chester, I needed a coffee and the coffee was lovely. Customer service is great, they bring everything to you and are really helpful. A little expensive. But overall a really nice place to visit

Friendly staff and clientele and an intriguing array of beers to boot. You’re assured of a warm welcome from the owner. I couldn’t make my mind up and he gave a taste of a couple of lagers that I was unsure about. One was great Well worth a visit on many levels.

I had a function in their private party room, and everyone had a fantastic time! It was my first time trying something like this, and the coordinator was incredibly helpful. She handled all my questions with quick responses, and the staff on the night were so friendly and fabulous. The room was spacious and had a great atmosphere, especially with the fairy lights on. We could start decorating from 12pm that day, and even the staff downstairs were willing to assist us with our decorations - including a tricky helium bottle! My partner and I opted for their £12 per person buffet option, which was beautifully presented on the night. Guests really enjoyed the venue and the food. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for somewhere to host a party!

When visiting Chester I always call at the Cornerhouse and tonight was no exception. Live music and amazing staff. Due to an incident with a customer at the bar a male member of staff walked me to my hotel 2mins away. The courtesy and customer care was phenomenal, thank you.

I recently booked out the function space upstairs at the cornerhouse and I was immensely impressed with how it all turned out, starting with the team that took the booking, they were incredibly helpful and knowledgeable whilst also helping me to understand the limits of the venue. The space itself is beautifully prepared but we were still able to add to it to make the night more personalised, the team that look after you for the night were really helpful and had the night run smoother. I also organised food (all vegan) for the party through them and was blown away not only by the selection of food but the quality and presentation. I would highly recommend booking any upcoming events here, you won't be let down!

Great place for decent real ale and the odd band

My Boss and I usually nip in once or twice a week for a couple of afternoon pints. There's a very impressive range of beers to choose from, including a fine selection of cask ales. The service is very warm and friendly, and the price is right.

Have been visiting Cornerhouse for drinks and music for years. Only recently found out that they started serving Sunday lunches. Called in last weekend for a Sunday lunch and it was excellent. Roast potatoes and cauli cheese were especially good. Along with friendly staff and a couple of well-kept pints - we had a lovely afternoon.

Since my review in 2022, my wife & I continue to visit this hostelry on a regular basis. It has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, continues to have a good selection of beers, lagers, wines and more. We really enjoy the Mezze platters, but if I am honest they do seem to have reduced in size as the price has (understandably) risen. Nevertheless, we like it here very much and will continue to frequent often.

Nice bar with a good selection of drinks. Had an interesting menu for food, and I wish I had time to try, so I will visit in the future. Friendly staff and space out front for sitting or standing if part of large group.

I recently shot a party in the function room. The staff were amazing and so friendly. And the food was on another level! The couple who hired me said that the food was one of the most important things to them, and that The Cornerhouse was renowned for their sharing boards. They were NOT wrong!!

Visited this place on a night away in Chester. Popped in to check out the live music and was pleasantly surprised. Good staff, beer selection etc. The band (Jacob's Ladder) were great too and we stayed in there for a good couple of hours. Will definitely return when in the area

Good pizza some good beers. Unfortunately one of the IPAs tasted of vinegar barman dismissed this stating they’ve all just been changed nothing wrong with it and walked away. Disappointed rude poor service poor attitude. So expect the occasional bad pint and no recompense.

A lovely period building and bar that is very popular so if you are planning to eat there pop in or text/call in to book a table. This bar offers some unique beers and lagers that I’d never heard of before but they are well worth trying I know I was surprisingly impressed. The staff here are very friendly and helpful and professional. As a member of the LGBT+ community I felt very welcome and very safe.

Loved our Saturday night at the Corner House. The bar has a really great atmosphere and all of the staff were great! We couldn't decide what on the menu sounded tastier so to avoid getting food envy we ended up having a meat and cheese platter, a pizza, and a baked camembert - and they were all absolutely delicious! The selection of wine was excellent and the wine / platter deal is great value for money! We have already booked a table for another Saturday night soon! Thank you!

Absolutely love this venue! We held a 60th birthday party in the function room upstairs and couldn’t have been happier with everything from start to finish! Thank you so much to Sophie for making it so easy to organise and the bar staff who were allocated to work upstairs with our party (wish I knew their names!) were so friendly and welcoming, making it such an enjoyable evening! Will definitely be recommending to friends and family and hopefully will return x

A really nice pub, situated between the railway station and the city centre. Good selection of drinks, friendly staff. Toilets spotlessly clean.

Fantastic local pub - live music, quiz nights, excellent food and the Sunday roast is exceptional.

Great pub. Opened up, woody, quirky. Real ales on. Cappuccino stout was lovely. Good range of lagers and bottles, including Duvel. Haven't tried the food but the range of platters looks very appealing. Half a bottle of port and a platter, £40. Great idea.
