Super nice small hotel, a perfect stop between London and Cornwall. There is small pub as well which we didn't have the chance to experience as we arrived late, but looked super cute. The yummy homemade cookies and the tea in the room is super nice touch

Another delicious lunch at The Compasses. Not very busy today so we hhad perfect service. Interesting additions to the wine list (St. Benezet chardonnay and a sangiovese both went down very well). We ate the ever-popular crispy chilli squid and then beef & pancetta pie, beef bhuna and lamb shoulder with flageolets. All hit their mark with our international guests who know their stuff. We HAD to have two of the puddings, the sticky apricot & walnut and the chocolate hazelnut tart. Brilliant - thank you chef David Winter.

What an absolute find! We happened across The Compasses Inn as we needed somewhere to stay locally for work, but had no idea what a treat we had in store - now planning to return as a destination stay. The attention to detail of the team here is second to none - and don't even get me started on how good the home made chocolate and walnut cookies are...! The rooms are excellent and well appointed. Proper bottles of shower gel/shampoo etc, a tea and coffee tray with beautiful mugs and the aforementioned cookies, lovely bedlinen, real coat hangers (rather than the horrible hotel ones that always fall off) and a well thought out information pack, complete with ordinance survey maps of local walks. We had to leave before breakfast service on our first morning, and so were treated to a hamper of beautifully presented and delicious goodies left outside our room. Kilner bottles of juice, milk, yoghurt, granola, and fruit, along with homemade brioche and preserves. The cooked breakfast on our second day was also superb, and Carlo had very kindly suggested taking our order the night before, so that we could have it promptly before we had to head off. Make sure you book ahead for dinner, as this place is rightly enormously popular. We were fortunate to get a table at the last minute, but you do not want to miss out on a fabulous dinner here... I could happily have had anything from the very well curated, and excellently executed menu. Dave in the kitchen, really knows his stuff... I had the mackerel and nasi goreng on his recommendation and it was absolutely amazing. I can't remember the last time I went into a bar/restaurant with such a lovely atmosphere, and such charmingly hosts. We can't wait to go back. Happily work will bring us back in a few weeks, but I am busy devising other excuses to visit Tisbury. Thank you for an outstanding stay.

On arriving I was immediately hit by the quirkiness and friendly atmosphere, I loved everything about The Compasses Inn. The attention to detail with the decor, was right up my street. The Welsh throws, the scandi wooden hooks etc. I had a great night sleep and the bedding and pillows were comfy and perfect for me. I arrived back late to my room after attending a wedding locally and there was the most delicious chocolate chip cookie waiting for me. How did they know that was just what I needed with a cup of camomile tea before going to sleep. I can’t rate this wonderful find highly enough. I will definitely be going back and hopefully sometime soon. Thank you so much for a wonderful stay.

Having recently moved to the area we’d heard great things about The Compasses. We finally found time and booked a table for Sunday lunch, we were not disappointed. They were busy and possibly a bit short staffed (where isn’t at the moment?!) but the staff were so friendly and the food delicious. From roast beef to burger to veggie option they were all superb. Will DEFINITELY revisit. Thank you The Compasses.

My brother and I decided that we were going to go on an old boys (We're 64 and 62) walking holiday. We used the National Trust Book 100 Great Pub Walks. The walks did not look too arduous and the pubs look good. What an amazing surprise we were in for the walks were gorgeous and the pubs superb. All seven we stayed at obviously were bed and breakfast, some in the book aren't. We decided to head to Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire as an area we did not know too well. This was our fifth. This was my favourite stop of the whole week, an absolutely amazing pub. By now we were getting used to turning off a main road and then turning off the side road, well this place we turned of the track before we got here. There was a definite, "We're lost" moment, however we suddenly came upon it and what beauty. An ancient pub with stone flag flooring, a dark and atmospheric bar, leading to the most gorgeous garden. The landlady and the staff were the most friendly people, and were exceptionally proud of the pub. Our room was beautiful, it was immaculate, we assumed it had just been renovated, yet were told it had been done 7 years ago, however they keep it pristine. Food!!! Oh boy what a pleasure. I had the roast pork and it was simply the best, it was so delicious, with perfect crackling, unbelievable. I had never been to Wiltshire before, but would now never hesitate to recommend it to anyone, it is picturesque, and unspoilt. We were told it is the county that has been forgotten. Long may it continue, it is perfection.

A lovely old pub which I have known for many years, tucked away in the Wiltshire countryside, and now serving the best food that I have discovered within ten miles of Shaftesbury post Covid. A joy to be met with a menu that changes daily with many interesting dishes, not just the ghastly 'pub classics'. Interesting wine list. Efficient and prompt service.

Unspoilt and oozing atmosphere. Friendly staff and great food - pub classics or more sophisticated if you want. At lunchtime when we visited it was great for people watching , there’s old money in these parts. Nearby villages are extremely beautiful . The only downside is that driving to it involves a longish single track road but with some passing places. The overflow car park is 300 yards down the road - the car park in front of the pub gets full very quickly .

We regularly drive to Cornwall and have been looking for a stopover that is also dog friendly. The compass inn is super dog friendly even providing towels by the door . Bedrooms are beautiful , if you like clean simple Scandi lines , great lighting , and attention to all the details that make a bedroom and bathroom work effortlessly. Not forgetting a proper bed !! and great view. The bar / restaurant in complete contrast to the rooms are a step into a warm envelope of what is the original history of the inn . Log fire oak beams stone floor sharing tables private booths and loose furniture that’s been found or passed on . The welcome was warm the service all you could ask for , and ditto the menu and food and wine offering. We slept so well we were last to breakfast . The full English was the best we’ve had for a long time . Timba our Border Terrorist loved the local sausage! We left agreeing that at £250 for the stopover it was great value and wished we’d booked for longer . A big thank you to all the team at the inn . We will be back ! A walking/rugby weekend based from the well appointed 3 bed annexe of the the pub - we even had beer deliveries from the bar! The pub itself could be straight out of a Hardy novel and you expect a shepherd to walk in and warm himself by the massive hearth! We couldn't fault the food, the ambience and the cheery team. The annexe was extremely comfortable not lacking for anything required. Firewood, milk and homemade cookies replenished daily. Many thanks to Ben, Jaunty and the rest of the team. Lovely old pub but lighting was just a little bit dim though you got used to it. The roast beef was tender and delicious and the Yorkshire pudding was a generous size. Gravy was thick and the vegetables (greens, red cabbage, parsnips and roast potatoes) were excellent. Finished off with a tasty dessert (panacotta with raspberries). Overall a pub we will be returning to again in the future.

We spent three nights at the Compasses Inn which included 3 breakfasts, 2 dinners and a light supper. The room was spacious, clean and warm. The pub/restaurant is very welcoming and cosy. On a winters evening it is traditionally lit by the open fire, subdued lighting and candles at each table. Throughout our visit the restaurant was busy and the staff very attentive. The food is well cooked and generous. Breakfasts were substantial! Go for the full English and you will need all day to walk it off. Car parking is straightforward but we would imagine that on a warm summer's evening you'll need to get there early or use the overflow car park which is a few minutes walk away. The garden with its awning suggests that this would be an exceptional place to enjoy a well chilled bottle of rose. Something we have every intention of doing!

One of the most authentic old English pub experiences you can have. Have been for Sunday lunch a number of times and it always delights. The atmosphere takes you back to the 14th century when this must have been an old coaching house. As soon as you walk towards the entrance you think of the many thousands of people who have traversed these worn and polished stones over the centuries. Descending in to what must have been an old stable for guests' horses you are greeted with bags of warmth and atmosphere, a lovely fire, the smell of history, real ale and good food. Everyone is happy here, and the food fits the atmosphere perfectly. Rustic dishes with loads of flavour and a welcome departure from classic pub fare, although you will find a few old favourites on the menu too. The menu changes seasonally depending on locally available produce, dated and updated daily on their website. Always a surprise to see what nuance the season brings upon each visit. Friendly staff, well run, reasonably priced for the quality and experience, and bags of atmosphere. Well done to the proprietors for being faithful custodians of this little slice of English history.

A lovely old building, friendly barman and good beer. We'd been told the food was very good, but our lunches were both disappointing. My husband's liver and bacon was covered in a very thick and slightly odd-tasting gravy. I had hake and chips, which arrived with a portion of peas the size of a dessertspoon. The chips were very overcooked, dark coloured and crispy hard and I left most of them. I did tell the barman when he cleared the plates and he was sympathetic but it wouldn't have hurt to knock the price of inedible chips off the bill. I had skipped a starter to leave room for the desserts, which sounded lovely, but I didn't fancy spending any more money after such a mediocre main course so decided not to bother. What a shame. I know it normally gets great reviews.

The food and drink were excellent - a short menu so they can keep on top of it, but good range even for vegetarians. Service was friendly and helpful at dinner and breakfast. The pub itself is a total charm - open fire, low beams, flag floor. You could be back in the 14th century. We have had several lunches here over the past year . The menu always offers something tempting and choosing is difficult! The food is good over all 3 courses The inn is a bit hidden but worth the trip

We went there for Sunday lunch. Roaring log fire ancient surroundings and the most delicious Sunday lunch with the best roast potatoes ever! Great wine list and fantastic atmosphere. You cannot beat it.

What a beautiful place - we had dinner having been in the area for the weekend. Had delicious home cooked, fresh food - would thoroughly recommend! We originally come from the area and the Compasses has always been a great place full of character….

We visited whilst staying in a nearby airbnb - and decided to make the trip walking across the fields so no-one had to drive! (There are a couple of walking routes around). I had the fish pie which was delicious. My partner and a friend...

everything and more you would want from a pub in terms of quality service value and setting. Scotch egg is sublime but all the food is quality and a great selection.

Fantastic country pub Met up with members of the family here and it really ticked the box for everything I associate with a quintesentialy English inn. This place is tucked away in the Wiltshire countryside. Food is great and ambience lovely. They also have really...

Taken to the Compass for Sunday Lunch. We all ordered the roast beef which was tough and overcooked. And to make matters worse the knives that were provided were old and very blunt. I found it almost impossible to cut the meat. If we had...

We had a fantastic meal last night. I was really indecisive so our waiter helped me decide and he chose really well - cured salt beef, monkfish & mussel laska and popcorn sundae. My boyfriend had terrine, hoggett & chocolate tart. All washed down with...

This is the country pub that I have looked long and hard for. Rustic and ticks all the boxes for ambience, being unspoilt,in a beautiful hamlet deep in the Wiltshire countryside. Great food and drink . Beautiful cottage and rooms also available.

We stayed here for 2 nights in a lovely, light room within this very old inn. A great choice of food, wine & beer, which was well priced. Ben, the owner, also rescued us when our car broke down. Highly recommended.

Having ate here before and had a good time I thought it would be good for a birthday meal for 4 on a Monday lunch time how disappointing it was. 2 Steak & Stiton pies ordered although very tasty lacked Stiton and was meant to be served with veg we had to ask for the veg which when it arrived after several minutes the excuse was we only have 2 microwaves not the excuse I wanted, the other 2 meals were fine, unfortunately we will not go back.

We visited on a Sunday for breakfast. Arriving a couple of minutes after 10am (opening time), we queued for a table and then again to order food. There were plenty of tables but appreciated it was busy - not all tables were full. We waited for 50 minutes for our food to arrive, although coffee arrived much earlier. This was prompted by us asking where our food was/checking the order had been made, to which we were told ‘we’d just have to wait because it was busy’. The food arrived 5 minutes later. The food was tasty and we’ve no complaints about the quality or price. But, something about the system here just doesn’t make sense, queuing at every point and then waiting another 50 minutes for scrambled eggs on toast and a bacon sandwich, doesn’t make sense. We arrived at 10 and didn’t leave until 12:15…. People had started arriving for lunch! Sadly, we’d not return. There are just other places nearby that are doing it better.

We booked a table for the opening party, the pub opened earlier in the week with new staff and owners.

The location of this establishment is strange because the shop/restaurant sits within what is essentially a business park in the middle of nowhere but it is not hard to find. The setting was ideal for a summer lunch with lots of variously covered areas to shelter from the sun or rain if it happens. Then you realise that all these covered areas are, in fact, the restaurant! I saw no evidence of indoor seating. The main seating area is fundamentally a plastic marquee attached to a shop unit and all the seats are picnic benches. They have an interesting menu, which changes regularly I understand, and it is obvious that this establishment is not trying be a full all ‘singing and dancing’ restaurant and they do make that clear. It uses locally sourced quality produce for Deli style light meals, specifically lunches, and also snacks. The people running it are personable, welcoming and efficient. We found them very helpful and attentive and the food was delicious. Overall, the food menu is a little overpriced I feel but not excessive. That said, a few dishes do seem “over the top’ for what they are. It is the shop where the prices are eyewatering expensive and I think they have gone too far. I can here them now saying that they are supporting local suppliers and that this comes at a cost but times are hard and I do truly believe they, or their suppliers, need to face reality as the pricing is far too high. We need to support businesses like this but they have to respond too! Did I enjoy my meal? Yes, fantastic, Would I go again? Yes, definitely! Would I encourage you to go? Yes definitely! I just warn you that your visit will be enjoyable but not cheap so be prepared.

Great evening! It did not disappoint! The black rock fillet steaks were amazing. The young waitresses were both lovely, always smiling & nothing was too much trouble for them. The pub has a lovely atmosphere and we all enjoyed the evening. We would highly recommend a visit here!
