We had a delicious meal at The Company Shed, which I think I last visited around a decade ago. We ordered scallops, prawns, crab cakes and sauteed potatoes. All very tasty, well-seasoned and a lovely, different place to dine. The food does come out when it's ready, but this didn't bother us and we enjoyed what we had. The food, a glass of local white wine and a beer, came to £60. I think this is quite reasonable for a good meal. I had booked my table via the online form back in September, a month before we came, and sent a follow up email during the week to confirm. Nonetheless, when we arrived, I was told they couldn't find my booking and we felt like an inconvenience. They seated us anyway but from when we arrived until when we left, there were only three tables with guests, including us, even though they turned customers away. All in all, a really lovely meal but maybe The Company Shed ought to improve their booking system, as I sensed a lack of communication amongst the team. Thanks for some delicious seafood, we will be back.

I’m so sorry to say , but from a few years ago your prices have gone beyond market price, we are from London and know our prices? To now be charging corkage, you really have taken the working class people having a treat, you really have lost the plot, you are literally only wanting middle class and snooty upper class to say they’ve been to “The Company Shed “ Shame on you , will never recommend you, or visit again 👎

Seems overpriced for what it is. We had grilled lobster and it was overly smothered in garlic. Lobsters were tiny. This is the second time we went back as the first experience was mediocre. Eating lobster should be an experience; crackers and pickers and so on. Won’t be coming back. Can’t understand when it has all the potential it doesn’t work…….

Awful. This is a warning to anyone thinking of going - please avoid. It does not deserve to be in business. I usually review restaurants we l have enjoyed but this was so bad I felt I had to let you know, That is what this forum is for. Bland, tasteless 'fresh' seafood. We had seen a lot of negative reviews, but a friend had visited a few years ago and enjoyed it, so we thought we would give it a try. Had pre-ordered dress crab and was told the shells were too big so if it was OK it would be served in a bowl. We agreed but the delivered dish did not resemble dressed crab. It wasn't fresh, wasn't dressed, was dry and tasted of nothing. £24.00! How could this terrible dish be served at the same price a a dressed crab in Scott's Mayfair?? In fact Costco crab in a tin is 10 x better. Cockles had no flavour at all, rollmop was OK. Our friend had a pint of shell on prawns, extremely disappointing, and in fact had the same dish in a pub in the Cotswold's recently (miles from the sea) that were so much better. This is NOT a fresh seafood restaurant. Our guess is the items, particularly the crab and cockles had previously been frozen. I just wish I had taken some photos...We assume the previous owners have sold the business. Also, a terrible smell wafting out of a grid in the floor...

Sadly disappointed ! Once you’ve actually managed to get through the very poor booking system , and got a reply it lived up to our expectations which we had hoped was wrong.. sadly not! We tried to order crab, but advised by our friendly waiter it’s all pre ordered? So we opted for the scallops and the lunch special mullet , over salted over cooked mullet arrived on a bed of uncooked spinach swimming in juice from the sautéed cherry tomatoes .. scallops are cooked well but again swimming in water from the tomatoes. Al in all £80 later and we left thinking we wouldn’t go back .

I booked this place in error for my birthday. I didn't know that you had to order quite a few things in advance, but I asked if they had anything in, and they advised on that. Staff were super friendly and helpful. We went for late lunch. The food was OK, it wasn't bad and didn't taste odd or anything, it just didn't wow me. I could take it or leave it. Oysters are delicious and fresh. Love the rustic look but missed any atmosphere due to time we went and all the between services prep. We were sat right next to the toilet and the back door of the restaurant in an empty restaurant. I didn't ask to move because I had changed my table from outside to inside, and I thought they were fully booked. By the time I realised, we had all out food, and it would have been a mission. I'm sure if I'd asked, they would have moved us, I just thought it an odd choice of table to put us on in an empty restaurant. I'm sure if we went back in peak trading I could score more for atmosphere and if I booked and asked to not be sat at that table, they would oblige as the staff were lovely.

The Company Shed, West Mersea. Excellent quality food and perfect service. Recommend pre order if you intend to have crab or lobster otherwise it's unlikely to be available for you. Otherwise (or as well as!) the platters are terrific. Relaxed setting and surroundings with plenty of parking options nearby. No negatives apart from lethargy after lunch which is, of course, self inflicted!

We booked 2 months in advance, for Bank Holiday Sunday, table at 12.30. Arriving on time, it took 15 minutes before our order was taken, and then another 45 minutes for the platters to arrive. Thank goodness we had brought our own bread! The mixed seafood platter was fine, particularly the smoked mackerel ; the portion generous. We sat outside, so no atmosphere as we were buffeted by the wind. The concept is great, the food good; the service - a real let down.

Have not managed to be here for a long time, so excited to be going back, was not disappointed! The ambience, freshest oysters and great service added to a fantastic experience. This place does the simple things so well which is very difficult. Best to book and pre order how many oysters you can get through. They have specials on plus high quality fresh seafood… what else do you need apart from good wine & company!( they have local wines which were excellent) if you haven’t been then just go, not many places like this around anymore!

Good overall but I was disappointed by the lack of choice of a “proper” fish, I was so looking forward to bass, plaice, skate or a dover sole, no such luck. Only a fillet of mullet on offer. Instead I had sardines, a mixed smoked fish offering the main feature of which was crab and some oysters. All fine but some locally caught fish would have been good. Pinnneys of Orford do it well, a longer drive, but worth it if it’s a whole fish your after.

I recently dined at The Company Shed and found the experience to be quite mixed. While the food itself is lovely, it is significantly overpriced for what is offered. One of the major drawbacks was the cleanliness of the establishment. The tables and chairs were dirty, and there were flies everywhere, which was quite off-putting. The entire place could benefit from a substantial makeover, particularly the toilet, which was in a terrible state and also infested with flies. The service was acceptable, but the staff exhibited a bit of an attitude, which dampened the dining experience. Additionally, there seemed to be some disorganisation among the staff, and we had to wait to be greeted upon arrival. Regarding the food, the seafood was simple, and the shells hadn't been cleaned properly, which was disappointing. Given these issues, I would not choose to eat there again. Improvements in cleanliness, staff training, and better value for the money could greatly enhance the dining experience at The Company Shed.

The prawns tasted amazing, however lots of lettuce and nothing else with the prawns, isn't a prawncocktail sorry. I ordered a crab, and I was assuming it came with some salad atleast. Staff were talking about other staff. I paid in cash and the lady picked up her handbag and gave it to another member of staff and then she walked back and started cutting food without washing her hands or putting gloves on. I didn't book a table, and I felt that I was an inconvenience even though the whole room was empty. Please don't waste your money and try somewhere else.

Incredibly rude and very unwelcoming waitress (large fair head middle-aged woman) greeted us upon arrival. The restaurant was half empty but we (as a four) were literally squeezed in one corner between two other very busy tables, where the customers already seated weren’t terribly happy, as we tried to sit down. I think the waitress got a kick out of the awkwardness of it, because she could easily have sat us somewhere more comfortable and less disruptive. On the food front we felt: 1. The dressed crab platters were grossly over priced for what they were. 2: The waitress was very off hand about the children’s menu, saying she didn’t approve of such things and that he should be eating the fresh fish (he’s 5??) 3: I ordered fish cakes and they were over cooked and contained a small piece of plastic? I didn’t complain, simply because it was already such an uncomfortable experience as a family, I didn’t want to make it even worse? 4: The food was served at vastly different times - between the two dressed crab plates, 25mins passed before the burnt kids pizza was brought out. We resorted to giving our child a buttered bap, so that he could eat at the same time. 5: Apart from the unfriendly, passive aggressive waitress (why not try a different job!?) the food service was poor by anyone’s standards. The dressed crab plates, whilst of good quality was not worth £30 a head. 6: The final bill was £121 odd and we came away feeling ripped off, unwelcome and hugely disappointed - we would definitely NOT recommend The Company Shed and that’s such a shame, as it had been recommended to us by friends who had visited a few years ago. We wouldn’t ever go back, there are far superior and pleasant restaurants to visit for fresh fish, were your custom is appreciated.

Visited The Company Shed today with family, it was a special trip as we had enjoyed our previous visit so much. Today however was not so good, parking is an issue which we were aware of. When we sat down we were told there would be a delay due to staff shortages, the young lady told us to try and park in the lane at the side of the Shed but this was impossible due to cars already there and access required by another company, all of this was ok and understandable The food stated to arrive in stages which was not good but what happened next was astonishing. A fresh party arrived by car and the lady in charge then moved her car back up the lane to make room for these guests, made me feel very annoyed Given the above it would seem wrong to be further critical but sorry the Food, portions and service were well below what we had experienced at our previous visit Sorry but don’t think we will be back

Update: we were actually there at 2.30pm after the lunch time rush so I don’t know why the owner is saying 11.30 as if we wanted oysters for brunch. Lady (blonde) was very friendly on arrival but seemed stretched. Didn’t seem ready for us or many other diners. Oysters nice and crab ok. Unfortunately we did find a bit of plastic in our fish cakes. Could have been a lot worse but my partner started looking in them after hair found first. I would avoid the fish cakes as what we did eat of them, they were not good. Overall, very pricey for what was served but willing to give them benefit of doubt (even with plastic). They did foot the bill but just not acceptable to serve that and very dangerous. Head scratching reading those bad reviews - some people don't know how to appreciate good food. It's a simple dockside restaurant with some of the best food you can find. How you can walk into a shed by the docks and complain that you're not at the Ritz is beyond me... Go and enjoy this amazing place.

We stumbled across this little shack/restaurant on a walk along the coast road at West Mersea. Big surprise it’s an amazing spot for fine fresh fish. All a bit unusual, lots of tables were empty but pre booked. Fortunately the waitress found us a table. (I’d book if you’re going!) We ordered a smoked fish platter each with a side of fried potatoes. Other diners were bringing their own wine out of cool boxes and bread out of bags! All very unusual. If only we’d known. Our fish platters were amazing - fresh and delicious, great with crispy fried baby new potatoes. All in all a very good experience.

My wife and I have visited the Company Shed a couple of times, but many years ago. I was very disturbed the bad reviews on Google, although the vast majority are really good. We ordered fried king prawns, with some roast potatoes, a seafood platter, some cockles and a dozen oysters. All the food was very good and there was more than enough for three. We brought our own wine (they charged £5.00 corkage) and some French bread (a chopping board and carving knife was produced without asking). Our waitress (called Lola) was polite and professional throughout. The restaurant was full with happy diners and the atmosphere was great. All in all it was a very interesting Sunday lunch. We will definitely go back again.

Never in my 50 years have I experienced staff as rude as the waitress who was working on the 15th of October. My partner and I walked into a place that had three tables being used. "Have you made a booking?" Was the opening line by Mersea's finest waitress, not a hello or any greeting at all. We answered no. "Well I can't take any walks in's" again this place had only three of its 10 tables being used. So we asked could get some seafood to takeaway. "I am not able to do that right now" to which I replied "you won't serve me a punet of cockles?", "we don't have any" replied the woman in what was now the constant rude tone. "There are some there" I replied, the woman leaned over pick the cockles up and put them on the counter. I took my card out to pay the £8.50 for the large punet of cockles and yes you have guessed it. "Oh I can't do card payments right now" nothing other than that. Honestly the rudest most arrogant service sector person I have ever met. For everyone's reference there is a place called Dukes seafood 2 mins walk away, there staff were wonderful and engaging, they take cards and their large cockle punet the exact same one is £1.50 cheaper.

Everything was delicious. Particularly loved the squid, tiger prawns, and garlic aioli!

Pre-ordering two whole lobsters was definitely the right choice, as both were cooked deliciously with garlic butter, plated on a bed of salad. Rather than a pre-made platter, we created our own with smoked and pepper mackeral, prawns, green lip mussels and lots of oysters. It really is a must to visit here, the staff are brilliant and the food is always on point.

Difficult one this. First, we had booked and the table was ready for us. the setting looks like an old fish preparing shed....Ok but there were grates in the corner behind my chair, ( used for swilling debris away in the old days perhaps) and there was food debris around this grate. We ordered drinks and our meal...... this is when it gets awkward. My wife and I ordered squid, which came very quickly. we waited a few minutes for the other dishes to be served. The nect dish took a good spell to turn up.... eventually, realising the dishes were not coming together, we began to eat. after we had finished our meal, our relative had still not been served his meal. we called a waitress over and asked about the final dish. we were told that the dished were cooked and brought out as they were completed..... and this was just how it was...... It was as if they only had one pan and one hob ring to cook dishes. Now, i have never eaten in a place where the food does not get served more or less at the same time... however, if this is the case, then ok. but there should have been a little warning about this as we ordered. I also felt that the response from the young lady was very dismissive and uninterested. When she returned to the kitchen i watched as she and the cook, had a good moan about us, casting derisory glances our way. Now.. the unfortunate thing is that the food was absolutely superb. It was fresh and tasty, and full of flavor. It was such a shame that some of the staff were not more professional. I will add, that the young lady who dealt with our order was very pleasant, and I would guess, had heard complaints such as mine , before. Despite the food being great, not sure if the whole experience is worth returning for.... but who know.

Came here for a birthday and the food was disgusting. The venue was a complete mess! Everything was greasy and tasted of oil, glasses were filthy, staff clueless and pottering around and no food for children unless you pay full price for an oily fish cake. Also, £1.50 for a bread roll and the lobster was drowning in oily garlic so you couldn’t even taste it. When complaining to the staff about things, it took them 20 minutes to change a glass or they forgot about it! Worst meal ever and it was over £200! Their only edible item was the potatoes.

Customer service 0 , tried to book 3 x times Spoken on the phone to a girl that she could even talk or answer properly, i sent 2 x emails as she told me 1st one did not arrive so i send again with copy, she told me to then fill a booking form online which I did and someone would contact me , nobody did do after 2 emails 3 phone calls and a booking form I called again and the same girl told me that yes the emails would be answered by someone “ tonight” but the lady was off today snd she thought Saturday was already fully booked! How moronic is that! I asked her why didn’t she tell me that yesterday snd why asked me to fill a booking form? I rate thus customer service appalling to say at least , at thus day and age they should be grateful that people want to book and spend the money there because without customer they would NOT have a job and the place would close down . All this is because the owner/ manager she is not there everything is going pear shaped , what a shame.

I was a bit concerned at recent reviews but needn't had worried as our particular visit was great. Lovely staff, good seafood and the ability to bring your own drink made this a real winner. After enjoying some wonderful oysters for the table (which we had an extra round of because they were that good) I opted for a seafood platter with 1/2 a whole crab which I thoroughly enjoyed and felt fair value, the quality of the crab was excellent. Others in our party of four opted for some of the other platters which were also good but the Mini Platter was a bit to mini and minimal for the price in our opinion and two fishcakes with just salad at 17 quid was a bit of mickey take - its mainly potato at the end of the day!!! A fairer price for the fishcake offering would be around 13 quid in my opinion because it was a bit poor. Generally though a good lunch and would return.

Not what it used to be. Seems like it's succumbed to tourism and it's now over priced and more like a restaurant than the old shed/shop. Crab was delicious but salmon pâté was off (tasted like blue cheese). Wouldn't go back for that price tbh

Overpriced for quality and service. Better to go in better restaurant in town than sit in there. They don’t clean the tables, flies everywhere around dirty tables with left food. Dozen of oysters cost £25, but if you take different types they will charge you minimum £3 per oyster when in the corner the same oysters just £0,5. Value for money = Zero

Very disappointed with the quality of the fish & the chips & also the tartare sauce. Have been using the shop for about 9 years but the last year or so it's far below par. The were over cooked & the fat tasted like it needed replacing. The fish was a lot smaller than it used to be & again wasn't very tasty. Always used to look forward to it as the shop could accommodate my gluten free & was delicious. For now will not be using your shop until we've been told things have improved.

This chip shop is a gem, burgers, fish and chips all very good but the southern fried chicken is just awesome, nice big tasty pieces. Worth buying a large portion and save a piece for the next day. Batter and skin all crisped up so no wobbly skin like other well known places, top quality chicken too.
