Liked this pub very much until the last time. Ordered some chips and drinks, waited for the chips for a while then asked where were the chips and they were there, the bloke told us that he looked for us and couldn't see us when we were sitting right in front of the bar and there were very few people inside. The staff was laughing and chatting among themselves and no attempt was made to find who ordered the chips which were by then just about warm. Very poor and won't be going back there again especially because it looked like they were taking the mick

Quite a nice pub in a good location, but the staff can be surly and rude. The pub has a reputation for having a very poor attitude towards children, and I witnessed this recently. I was in the pub with a friend and saw a woman told on three separate occasions, by different members of staff, that children were not allowed in the pub after 7pm. It was approximately 4.30pm when she was told. I had heard that the staff were like this but to see it first hand was really disappointing. This is a family area and the woman was just enjoying a nice time with her kids. She didn’t need her time ruined like that. Unfortunately, I have been in the pub since then and witnessed similar behaviour. Other pubs in the area have similar rules, which is totally fine, but they have a much more welcoming approach.

Seemingly smart pub but with the most disgustingly dirty ladies toilets I’ve come across in many a long year. And I’ve lived in the area for 40 years. Don’t blame the bar staff - pleasant but clearly left to their own devices and untrained. Whoever owns /has responsibility for this pub needs to be accountable. Have drunk here since late 80s but not over last few years as was getting expensive and losing character. But shocked by my visit this evening.

A decent pub, makes an effort, has an open mic night every two weeks which is good. But the young staff have notbeen trained to warn people when the pub is closing the time of which is inconsistent as if to meet the needs of the staff. What ever time they choose to close they should ring 'last orders' TEN minutes before service stops. Then on the hour, ten minutes later they should shout - time drink up now please' and ensure the drinking is finished with the next ten minutes. Otherwise there is confusion, arguments and people doubling up drinks. Its a pub not a bar or club. The pub has a nice little patio at the back and at the front seats in the street to watch the world go by. Its good for the Sunday market too. I wish the staff would stop SMASHING the wine bottles into broken class behind the bar as it is very noisy and shocking. The have a 1am close on Saturday which is good. A nice traditional English boozer. They need to play less American dance music though. Less Hip Hop, Drum and bass, UDM,EDM and more British and Brixton music. The pub is very handy for Herne Hill station.

¿Este pub ha cambiado de manos recientemente? Realmente terrible servicio. Personal maleducado que sigue haciendo lo que quiere, incluso navegando por la red, mientras los clientes esperan bebidas o comida. Eres ignorado mientras te paras en el bar. Estaba prácticamente desierto y todavía no ayudaban.

The pub itself is lovely. Lots of natural light and yet still cosy, complete with fireplaces, board games and well stocked bar with a myriad of good quality beers on tap. What more could you want?Well...maybe a really tasty Sunday roast!?Ah, unfortunately you will not be finding that here.Myself and two friends all ordered the veggie nut roast and barely had we committed thought to order, did It trip out from the kitchen, worryingly quick off the mark. And as we embarked upon what was to become an arduous trudge through the plate, our sense of worry and foreboding only grew more intense. I don’t think you can claim that something is a ‘roast’ if it hasn’t seen the inside of an oven, and since what we were served was a sort of lukewarm pile of shredded carrot spiked with the occasional cranberry and walnut, it’s claim to be a roast is spurious. And if that was the washed up star of the plate, the supporting cast fared no better. A gravy that was watery and gritty at the same time (impressive I know), a pale flaccid Yorkshire pudding, barely cooked stringy leeks and saccharine red cabbage. Four tiny, beige, claggy potatoes completed the ensemble. An ensemble that ranged from lukewarm to cold. Final verdict; A crime against Sundays.

We used to really like this pub but last night the craft beer selection was noticeably worse, they ran out of Aperol (a no no on a Friday night), burgers were overcooked, dry and flavourless, chicken wings equally so, but the worst thing was the loud and silly 80's music despite the fact that most (not too young) punters appeared to be struggling to engage in a conversation. The service and food were really good with great menu choice and good portion size at reasonable prices. But why oh why let yourselves down with quite disgusting Gents toilets. They looked fine, but seriously, leaving the door propped open with a bar stool to let the smell out is not the solution to a wet floor! Sort that and the customer experience will be very much enhanced!

I stumbled upon this pub by accident last week. The staff were really friendly and helpful and it had a lovely relaxed easygoing vibe. The decor is really well thought out and cool and contemporary -- a section at the back that is white and fresh with a mix of vintage wooden tables and chairs and picture frames, and the front that is a mix of exposed brick and rich bright colours -- but still retains a pub feel and, most refreshingly, doesn't feel like a chain pub. We didn't have a chance to eat on this visit but I'd like to give it a go next time. It's situated on a sweet pedestrianised square and the whole area has a friendly community feel, and there was a cool creative-looking crowd in having lunch when we were there. Overall it just feels like a nice space in which to spend some time with a friend or two. I'd definitely recommend stopping by.

Oh dear, on a weekday lunchtime when the pub was virtually empty: terrible service, a salad and a burger took an hour - when my husband asked where our food was and said it had been an hour and we have a newborn baby we need to get home the barman argued with him about how long it had been. Our order was wrong when it did arrive. The burger came out first and by the time my salad arrived the burger was stone cold without any of the paid-for extras. I asked for a different dressing on the salad when we ordered and they forgot it, then when I asked for some dressing it took 10 minutes for someone to return with a bowl of vinegar (no spoon or way to pour it). On top of that the food was disgusting - dry shrivelled burger on a stale bun, the salad chicken was tasteless and bacon was chewy. Complete waste of time and money, this pub is located down a gorgeous pedestrianised street with loads of lovely little restaurants down it, avoid this pub and try somewhere else.

A nice looking pub inside and were nicely greeted when we arrived. It took them around half an hour to take our food order (we had to ask someone to take it), starters took around 20 mins to arrive which was ok. They were pretty tasty. Once they were cleared we waited an hour for our roasts to arrive (after having to ask twice where they were). Two arrived and the other two after another 5 minutes. All the Yorkshire puddings were burnt on the outside, stone cold on the middle and stale. Clearly had been reheated under a grill. Meat was ok but mostly fatty, roast potatoes were bendy (!) Asked for mint sauce, that never arrived. Asked for more gravy, that never arrived. Complained to the Manager who didn't seem bothered whether we were satisfied or not. Asked him what he'd offer us after having to go to the bar to pay as no one took our dirty plates or was around to ask for the bill. We were given 50% off the mains which seemed reasonable but realised afterwards that we didn't get the 'two courses for £16.50' deal as we should have done as he then charged us full price for the starters which meant we probably saved about £10. Appalling, no apology, and will never go back. They said they were busy but it's Easter Sunday and you took the bookings so not an excuse, that's what you're there to do.

Having been sorely disappointed by the lunch at the Florence, I finally got round to having Sunday lunch here and going forward, this will be my go to place. The food was superb - portions were good, half a chicken rather than a chicken breast, sliceS of beef rather than a slice and a regular sized yorkshire pudding on a plate consisting of roast potatoes and vegetableS - and best of all, it's a whole £5 cheaper than two pubs within touching distance - with better quality and larger portions. We arrived at three PM, it looked like they'd just finishes a busy sunday service though you wouldn't have known as the staff were excellent and could not have been more helpful. The place is bright, clean and whilst busy, not overally so - they've a good team in place and it shows.I'll definitely be going back and soon.

I visited The Commercial with a small group of friends from the local area who had recommended we head here following its refurb. Lovely atmosphere and the staff were friendly and attentive. They have a nice selection of ales available and the food we ordered was tasty. We'll be heading back there again!

I visited The Commercial with some friends recently for some dinner and a catch up.I was wowed by the new appearance, it's really great. Our food was quick and delicious and the choice of beers was impressive. All in all a great venue at short notice and I didn't want to leave. Top marks ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️

We popped in for a quick drink as we wanted to check out the refurb. I have to say that the outside is a massive improvement as it used to be a very dull and unattractive colour! Inside it's brighter and love the seating arrangements. The back garden is lovely too. The lady behind the bar was friendly and chatty and overall we had a great experience. Look forward to trying out the food next time!

The pub has had recent refurbish and looks great and the food was very good- when it finally arrived! 45 minutes after ordering! We were asked to come at 12.30 as they had a big booking at 1pm. We had 3 small children with us and we ordered food before 1pm - it took a while to get menus etc. The food arrived 45 minutes later! It was hot and tasty but I could not understand how it took so long! I know it was fresh but a lot could have been pre- prepared as in any kitchen! A shame as we may not rush back again!

It is almost 30 years since I last popped in here for a pint when I was living in a student household nearby and quaffed many an ale at the bar. It was in those days a pub dedicated to sport and the walls were covered in various sporting team photo's. a large TV was always on in the smoke filled bar and we fell out of the door most evenings. My tastes have changed somewhat since and this lovely pub has also changed and matured over the years becoming what I found this week, a clean. open, tastefully designed pub serving quality ale and food, the surrounding area has also improved and is still on the up. So whilst I had a small twinge of nostalgic sadness for what has passed, this was a welcome return to an old friend

Popped in as had heard great things. 3 out of 4 ales on barman offered to 'recommend,' one which was not only not an ale it was the most expensive pint of craft rubbish they sold. When I pointed out it was not an ale he admitted to only liking lager...One of those mis matched rickety furniture places with eclectic 'edgy' music. All in all an old fashioned pub with its heart ripped out for people who think sitting on a reclaimed chair from an old persons house equates to living on the edge.Oh and craft = Doom bar and Greene King.

Great atmosphere in the pub and service was really good especially considering it was so busy (Sunday lunchtime). However, I found the food to be extremely overpriced for what it was. Had a selection of the 'smalls' which were small and not that great - e.g. cauliflower cheese for £3.50 - tiny bowl of perhaps 2 florets of cauliflower...Probably should have gone for the roast as they looked nice and better value for money.Would return but only to have a drink.

As a picky steak eater, it's difficult to find a good range of steaks (on budget and when flush). The Commercial offers a great sirloin steak at great value and clearly wants people to be impressed.. it's no Black and Blue or Gauchos, but regardless I always enjoy eating there. As a pub it has a good wine collection and craft beers, a super friendly bar staff and quiet moments of you want, but also fills up at the usual busy times. In the summer there's outside seating both front and back, the place is well situated close to Herne Hill station for easy travel.I can't fault the place, I've had many a great night there.

Really great evening last night at the Commercial, it's nice to see they've updated the menu. We had a delicious meal of scallops to start, beautifully tender steak and chips for our mains, followed by the black forest eton mess. We were impressed! So lucky to have such a welcoming and cosy pub as our local, and with excellent food, a great bonus. We will definitely be back again soon!

My girlfriend and I have been coming to the commercial for a couple of months now, though we'd never eaten there before. After coming off the train yesterday we went to the commercial and ended up eating, the staff were as lovely as ever, special mention to Ben, who was excellent. We ended up sharing the Cote do boeuf between us which was absolutely delicious, probably the best cooked piece of beef I've had! Really can't recommend this place highly enough, the food is knockout.

Had a memorable evening out on our first night in London at The Commercial in Herne Hill on their monthly Open Mic night. Local singers playing original songs and oldies ... followed by a really insightful poet then an indie girl duo, singer songwriter brothers and old school country couple. The punk Irish singer kept us entertained and had the whole pub singing. Great fun. It is immediately opposite Herne Hill station.

I pre booked a table for six of my family. I have enjoyed this place for a drink but the service was awful on Sunday. We ordered mostly roasts and all the additional sides. I was told there was no carrots available but we could have more peas. The resulting meal that was brought to the meal was a very problematic. Carrots only available on the extra paid for sides, no stuffing available. Basically meat and peas were the roast. Logging onto my online banking today they have overcharged me significantly. Tried to complain via the contact us form on the website - doesn't work.

The Commercial is the best pub we have in Herne Hill if we compare them in food and ambience. It has 2 fireplaces and nice comfortable sofas in two separate rooms divided by the bar in the middle. If the weather is good (or if you are a smoker) there are two great spots to enjoy -the back garden and the front pavement for 'people watching'. They serve English breakfast which is perfect on weekends and a really nice decent burger and a pint as a combo every Wednesday for £10. Fish and chips, yes they do but if you want fish and chips and you are in Herne Hill you just walk 100 meters to Olley's.

Went to this pub the weekend just gone with my puppy and a friend for lunch. The pub itself is clean and nice and has some board games. We both ordered the burger which was very small and expensive for the portion size (about £13). The staff did not ask how our meal was at any point (presumably because they know it was small). I would go hear again for a drink but certainly would not eat here.

Nice pub. Great range of beers. Friendly staff. And then we ordered food, which is where it got interesting. My friend had a burger. No problems there: juicy, tasty, the real deal.I was stupid enough to order a salad. (I know, in a pub, ordering salad. . .)The menu said: "Smoked chicken, avocado and bacon salad with Caesar dressing".I thought: well, that sounds simple enough. The salad that arrived ticked all of the boxes, except for two: "Caesar dressing" and "bacon".The bacon was special in its own way: two partially burnt, fatty rashers plonked on top of the salad. And underneath it. . . everything on the plate was covered with 3-4mm of industrial mayo, right out of a bucket. The mayo had been ladled on with a trowel. It was so thick and coated everything: you couldn't tell whether you were eating smoked chicken, slices of Quorn or bits of chocolate digestive. In fact, the only way to identify what you were eating was by colour: "if this is green, it's either lettuce or avocado. . ."For this, I paid £10.25. I left feeling physically sick and ripped-off.Memo to management: if you're going to run a pretentious menu (e.g. "Fish finger sandwich, Aspall Cyder battered line caught cod in a brioche bun, tartare sauce and fries"), try to make sure that the poor guys you've got working in the kitchen actually know how to serve up what you promise.I'd come back here for a beer in the future. But food? No way.

We had a meal and a drink on our way to The Ritzy in Brixton on Saturday evening. It was easy to book a table online. The staff were friendly and attentive and there was a varied menu on offer. I had sea bass in tangy beurre blanc with English asparagus and crispy dauphinoise potatoes, and the other half had the steak and chips. Everything was good and the ambience was easy going and pleasant.

Spent an afternoon in here over the bank holiday with some friends. Was impressed by the craft beer range (and drinks range in general). Lots of different beers (ipa's, Vienna lager, pilsners, golden ales are just a few) available on tap and in cans/bottles. Staff were really friendly and obliging - it was busy but the guy that served me still chatted about a craft lager he was serving from Glasgow and he let me try a few. All in all a nice afternoon. Pub has a nice vibe, eclectic mix of people, good staff.

Went with some friends on Easter Monday, first visit and will never go back. The menu sounded interesting, bit of a twist on some classics. My beef short rib was tough, dry and tasteless, my friend had fish and chips and the batter was soggy and pea puree looked like some reconstituted peas, mashed with a fork and left out to dry, they were rock hard like a biscuit. When we gave feedback to the waiter he dutifully took it to the kitchen and came back to tell us that is the way pea puree is made, and they are under instructions from head office not yo use butter or dairy. I wont go into the rest of the meals. How a place can survive so close to Brixton with staff that can't cook or think for themselves is a wonder.
