We were returning to Dorset and were concerned we may get stuck in traffic on the M5 so decided to detour via South Molton to eat just in case and found this place. Only a carvery was on offer which two of my friends didn’t want. While we dithered what to do, Jayne went off to talk to Jill who said she could arrange sandwiches. We agreed and were really glad we did. We really appreciated them going that extra mile for us especially as they were short staffed and the restaurant had more than the expected 35 covers that had booked. 2 roast dinners and 2 roast beef sandwiches later, we were ready to resume our journey. Thank you so much to Jayne, Jill and the team for a fab lunch. Better than our local Toby Carvery.

A truly wonderful team running this pub. Good honest food, plenty of it, lots of laughs, service with smile and a joke or 2 and even some lamb for the dog. We got let down by Riverside Camping at South Molton (review to follow🤬), so I phoned The coaching Inn at 1957, 3 mins before the stopped cooking. The rest is history, this team kept the kitchen open while we made our way there, arriving at 2010. Table was ready, a warm welcome, drinks were ordered and the evening was a success. 4 starters and 4 mains, all lovely, and in friendly welcoming environment. Thank you The Coaching Inn

A big THANK YOU to Jane and the team at the Coaching Inn for a really excellent Christmas Lunch. 40 of us attended this year, a really fantastic turnout, and we were treated to a great event. The Coaching Inn team worked extremely hard to serve our needs, and they pulled out all the stops to make sure we enjoyed ourselves. Good food, great service and a very festive atmosphere all helped to make our day. Thank you Jane and your team once again for looking after us so well, not just at our Christmas Lunch, but also throughout the year. We really do appreciate your Community spirit and all you do for us.

This is one of the most mediocre pubs that anyone could have the misfortune to ever visit. I do not understand how they have managed to get so many good reviews. I attended a Christmas lunch a few days ago and I will detail the meal that I had. The starter was supposed to be a Carrot & Coriander Soup but it turned out to be nothing of the kind. There was no way that you could taste a ny Carrot let alone the Coriander, the seasoning was non existent, I had to add so much salt & pepper to get any flavour at all & it was not Carrot & Coriander!! The mai course was allegedly a Lamb Shank that tasted like it was cooked in some remote kitchen many miles away. On the positive side, the roast potatoes & the sprouts were very good . I did not have the pudding, so I cannot comment on that ! All in all I wold say that this is a Pub to avoid if you happen to have taste buds that work!

Awful meal. Over an hour wait for food with no warning. Staff miserable and weren’t clearing plates and unwilling to compensate when our food was practically inedible. Steak like rubber and sauce just vile. We will never go back. Avoid at all costs.

Fantastic food, a lovely friendly welcome and a nice cosy setting. We visited as a 3 with a dog. We had 2 x delicious home made steak and kidney puddings, large portions, really tasty and a home made cottage pie, again delicious and a large portion. We shared a dutch apple pie, home made and fabulous with tons of custard. Would highly recommend you try this pub for gorgeous home made food in a lovely friendly setting.

We booked a table for 3 for the coaching inn South Molton, We ordered 3 drinks and was told immediately afterwards that we had 5 minutes to place a food order in, this I was not told at the time of booking, we didn't have a lot of time to get organised for another meal somewhere else due to the fact at being ill treated by all staff and a customer with foul language, I was even threatened by Jack the chef with "leave these Fxxxxxx premises before I break your Fxxxxxx neck" who has always in the past been very friendly and helpful, we are classed as regulars. So disgusted, we will never return again to the coaching inn South Molton and our business as well as our family and recommendations have been lost. A very disappointing night

We ordered Ham, egg, chips and scampie and chips. Nothing outstanding obviously frozen food for the convenience. The pub itself is scruffy with empty drink glasses left outside. On a positive...the bar person was lovely and obviously surprised to have around 10 tourists popping in for dinner. However, it is a popular locals pub which was entertaining listening to their banter whilst sat at the bar.

We ate here with our toddler back in September. We booked in advance, but we needn't have bothered as it was very quiet. There was a wide range of things on the menu. We had chicken tikka, chilli with tortillas, child's sausage, chips and peas, rhubarb and blackberry crumble (appeared to be mainly apple), and chocolate fudge cake.

On a Monday afternoon in South Molton we needed to have lunch somewhere about 2.30pm and wandered into the Coaching Inn. The friendly barmaid checked with the kitchen then showed us to a table and presented us with menus which had exactly the sort of pub grub you would expect listed. We all chose something different and when all the meals arrived we all tucked in and it was all delicious. The steak and kidney pie with chips and peas I had was superb and the lasagna that one of the children had was the best they had ever had. Two well kept real ales from Exmoor Ales were on and I sampled both which were excellent. The decor of the pub itself seemed a bit dated but in a pub that is no bad thing. A table of locals were enjoying a drink in here and a small friendly dog that belonged to one of them popped by our table to say hello a couple of times. The pub shut at 3pm for the afternoon. The lady behind the bar was superb and everything you would expect from a barmaid, she was friendly, funny, helpful and offered us tourists advice on the local area. Would happily visit this pub to eat and drink if in the area again.

As a vegetarian very little choice for meals. I selected from the light bites as there wasn’t anything on the main menu. Tried first for Mediterranean Veg Melt but the waitress couldn’t find it on the till as an option and the regular rolls were not available. So instead I went for the Nachoes but no ham. A huge pile of salty tortillas with sparse grating of cheese accompanied by a dish of sour cream and one of salsa both of which came from a squeezy bottle. The most unappetising lunch I’ve been faced with for a long time!

A group of friends and I visited the pub and stayed for 2 nights with an all inclusive rate for dinner bed and breakfast. We came on the recommendation of friends and really could not have been more well received. I had to contact Jayne prior to the trip with a couple of requests concerning special requirements for myself. She was warm, friendly and accommodating on the telephone and even more so when we arrived. The rooms were homely and pleasantly appointed, all en-suite with tea and coffee and television. There is free WiFi and we were able to order anything from the menu without quibble. The meals were excellent, both tasty and appealing and the puddings were a delight, all being served with local clotted cream. Jayne and Paul were particularly kind allowing us to use their own garage to store expensive sporting equipment overnight. There was a lovely community feel to the pub/restaurant with local elderly folk enjoying cups of tea etc during licensing hours. This hotel is obviously a huge asset to the local area and I would like to thank Jayne and her staff for a very very good weekend. I really can’t recommend it highly enough. 5 stars for welcome and effort!!

The Coaching Inn is a traditional local pub that seems to have changed little over the years. It has a large bar area with friendly and helpful bar and kitchen staff. Meals are equally traditional with generous portions. The whitebait starter was tasty with a battered and batter-free mix, the chilli concarne was extra spicy, and the heavily battered potato-based fishcakes with ‘sauté’ potatoes (more like very thin-cut roast potatoes) was perhaps a little disappointing. The beer was good and the central town location with car park makes for easy access.

Popped into South Molton and was seeking somewhere for lunch. As soon as we entered The Coaching Inn we were greeted warmly. The pub is old fashioned but comfortable. Having seen the menu my partner decided on whitebait as a starter and I had a prawn cocktail. The portion sizes were generous and my partner reported that the whitebait was fresh and delicious. For the mains he had steak and kidney with a puff pastry topping, again tasty, lots of kidney, this came with chips and vegetables. I had scampi and chips. Tasty pub grub with friendly service. The homemade pudding menu looked fab but we were too full to eat any more. We will be back, we will eat pudding on our return too! Thank you for making us so welcome.

Her son's help out behind the bar and kitchen and Jill one of the chefs has catered to our needs very well especially my 80 year old father who is a celiac. The food is varied and good old hearty pub grub. Even the resident pub cat is a favourite amongst the locals! Large somewhat run down looking pub, there appeared to be a ? highways worker still in work gear including high vis jacket serving behind the bar ?? We opted for the faggots and the belly pork, the pork had a creamy apple sauce accompaniment on the menu, it arrived swimming in something akin to custard , incredibly sweet, Inspidly thin and bearing no resemblance to apple whatsoever. The faggots which should have come with mash arrived with anemic looking chips, I sent it back to be replaced, the mash that arrived was dry , unappetising and reminiscent of school day mash, the faggot more of a meatball than anything else .Frankly both meals were inedible and were left - not to be repeated - ever !!

This is our third visit in 2 months. Every time (even our first) we were welcomed in, sat in a relaxed environment and offered a menu or carvery. The menu is limited yes...... But, anyone who knows anything about running a business like this knows that a select menu means you can cook fresh and cook well, a pub/restaurant with a vast menu (like spoons) consists of grill, deep fry and 10 microwaves running over time, so no complaints here! We opted for the carvery every time and what a treat it is too!(Having formally owned and ran a family pub/restaurant/B&B that served a good carvery and catered for special dietary requirements) it is rare that we go out for a meal without having to mention something or send a meal back, but this was our third time, zero complaints or comments and to top that my mum had not a bad word to say either! All home cooked / homemade, succulent meats, well cooked veg (great selection too) plus the creamed leeks and cauliflower cheese is gluten free!Even managed to squeeze a pudding in today, a delicious orange viennese tart with ice cream!Well done to all the team especially Jill, Jane and (ok I forgot the male chefs name, but he's lovely too lol).We shall be returning very very soon

This has really gone down hill since the last visit. We got there early and the Carvery had just been laid out. Parsnips looked the type from the freezer that you'd deep fry, carrots looked like they had frost bite but what really ruined it for us was the potatoes. If you told me they had warmed up the Sunday's before I probably would have believed it, rock hard greasy skins with hardly any potato left in the middle, they would honestly have cracked teeth and pulled fillings - won't be back!

I have coffee here on a regular basis on market days (Thursdays) and sometimes have the carvery.I have dietary problems but the staff always provide me with an alternative to the roast if there is no white meat at the carvery.I have occasionally eaten here on Sundays - another carvery day but there is also a good choice on the general menu.I find the staff very welcoming and helpful and the food is very good

There were just 20 of us- a works dinner party- we were the only people in the restaurant- the meal was pre booked. I could forgive them running out of cointreau after just 2 glasses, but I had to send my cutlery back it looked like someone had just eaten cauliflower cheese- the table candles were unlit. My starter was duck which had been left to cool in its fat! yuk, the haddock was like a rubber ball- the....I believe it was potato was like a slab of polystyrene the veg was dry. The Christmas pudding was a scoop of brown slop flavoured with some kind of brandy essence- I ate basically a slither of duck, an brocoli floret and a sugar snowflake. I sent word back to the kitchen that it was the worst meal I had ever had in my entire life and no one cared to come out and apologise. I have eaten at roadside greasy spoons and 5 star hotels, I have worked in the hospitality trade all my life, owned a pub, and realy this is the orst offering I can recall

I think the term disorganised chaos fits the bill here !Very busy, several different parties and regrettably not enough staff to cope at anywhere near efficiency. Proprietress clearly trying to be nice to people, but chatting at length whilst serving can be frustrating for those waiting. Bar lady juggling with requests for drinks at the bar, demands from the restaurant and the dreaded telephone ! But coping as well as anyone and never losing her smile - well done !Carvery the usual turkey fare and acceptable as carveries go with the usual caveat of freshness and heat retention. We do seem to have a problem with the descriptions of desserts however. Pavlova turned out to be meringue sandwich with minuscule amount of cream inside with a few pieces of added fruit. Far too dry to eat on its own so following request, pouring cream was provided, but this is not pavlova ! From what we could see of the chocolate trio, this was chocolate fondant with cream. Too long between courses as insufficient staff available to cope for large parties.Sorry, but will not be rushing back !

We arrived at the pub today for a late lunch. We ordered drinks and browsed the menu. They had nearly finished serving but had no problem fitting us in for food. Taking our order and being very friendly I cheekily asked if I could bring our dogs in. With the answer of ..no problem with that if it makes us happy. Lunch was served .. Lovely. I can honestly say tasty. But to top it all the lady in charge was so jolly and made us feel so welcome, chatting away like a real friend. Real family pub.Was a lovely experience. Thank you so much. X x will be coming back.cannot say enough. Thank you x x

What a gem of a find. Lovely quirky little pub. My wife is a coeliac, and most of the main courses on the menu were gluten free. Delicious food, very friendly staff. We had the added bonus that the local folk band were practicing, so great food, nice chilled music & lovely surroundings. Definitely a 10/10.

Bad first (not that bad ..😆) A bit old and dated, dispite the newish tile panelling Batter was nice but a little oily on the fish (soaked into the batter) The good.. HUGE battered fish - (suggest you just get the small one) cooked perfectly Sirloin steak was tender and cooked perfectly (ordered medium) I was pleasantly surprised on the quality, as it's a basic takeaway with a restaurant attached and it was under £20, so no top steak restaurant - but kudos to the chef, best £20 steak I've had, and better than some classier $$$$ places I've been, For that £20 I also got onion rings (perfect), salad - quality greens, few cut up bits of capsicum a couple of mushrooms, tomato, fried tomato too and plenty of chips cooked perfectly and very nice. (but best chips in UK I've had is at Lochgilphead - Scotland) Constructive criticism only - I was VERY happy given the price, Way better than a lot of places I've been to so far in the UK, and would definitely eat the same dishes again. Staff were friendly... This is at the end of the tourist season too. (Oct'24)

Me & my partner came here on 5/9/24 on a very rainy day. We both grabbed a little drink and a treat here and relaxed in the lovely cafe after a long wet walk from Croyde bay. The staff here were wonderful and all really lovely! The millionaires shortbread was the best I’ve ever had and the cheesy chips were delicious! There is a wide variety of drinks to choose from, both hot and cold. Really lovely vibes and will definitely come here again!

Location wise excellent. Unfortunately, this tired old looking pub has definitely seen better days! Need of major investment, but it would definitely be worth it. Years ago, this pub was full of customers all of the time.

One of the best Sunday carveries that we have experienced, with a wide range of vegetables & meat; welcoming staff, especially Kim & Wendy, nothing was too much bother
