Missing a gravy and brown sauce that I paid for

Great battered haddock, but it seems the chips don't travel well, soft and a bit limp, probably due to steam. Oh, and the seal on the container was not sealed. Tut tut!

Lovely staff, food not great. Would not suggest pizza at all. Maybe for some standards is ok but to me I went there twice with friends and both times the food was not nice. I had one of the expensive burger and it was tasteless and I had the quattro formaggi pizza and it was pretty bad. Also, there is a cheese I never heard in that quattro formaggi.

This place is terrific. We asked for take away for 10 people and the service was incredibly fast and friendly, the food was super tasty, the portions were great and the prices are quite bang for buck. All in all an amazing place for both takeaway and eat in. Congrats

Arriving late in Edinburgh, the Missus and I along with the boys and GF had our first meal at City Restaurant. The restaurant gave us North American diner vibes serving comfort food. The restaurant was clean and there were no issues with service. Prices were typical for Edinburgh.

Food delicious. Close to theatre for pre or post dinner. Service quick and no hovering. Only bug is the tables are too close together near the toilet area, was difficult to navigate in and out of them without twisting ur backs. Understand it's for maximum numbers, but one less table place there would get them a better rating

food as always was excellent, delivery driver went to the wrong address, 39 Hanover Street and not 39-43Rose Street, took a few mins to sort out delivery!!! did suggest I put the wrong address on my order (I didnt) but he was polite so we will forgive him that!

Consistently the best fish & chips in town! Such a lovely atmosphere as well, great service from the staff, and I simply always have a great experience coming here. Couldn't recommend more. :-)

Fantastic place, it reminds me of an old "diner", but with a lot of confrontation, food 5 out of 5, the same atmosphere, they were quick with the food which is always good when it comes good and that was the case, the waitress who served us was super friendly and attentive... so a super good experience and I recommend it?! I can’t remember of an experience in a restaurant that I felt more disrespected than at this place. I waited in line for over 40 minutes to dine in. At no point I was informed that solo diners are not allowed to sit at tables for four (even with tables available and no line). I expressed multiple times that I had been waiting, seeing a couple of tables available and that there was no one waiting behind me for over 15 minutes but still, I wasn’t given a table. The explanation was simply “I cannot give you a table at this moment”. I felt completely disrespected and ignored. I chose to leave rather than stay in an establishment that clearly values profit over providing good customer service. Just because I was alone doesn’t mean I wouldn’t pay for my meal. Extremely disappointed

Probably one of the best restaurants I've been to in Edinburgh. Special mention for the Haggis en Bon Bon and its whiskey sauce. Impeccable service, it's a must-see place every time I'm in Scotland. 🥰

This restaurant was recommended to us by our receptionist from our hotel. The food was fantastic! I want to go back tomorrow for the haggis, neeps and tatties! The whiskey sauce that is served with the haggis just elevates it to next level delicious. We were a family, so we also got fish cake starter and haggis bon bons. Yum and yum! The fish and chips were cooked to perfection. The staff were impressively accommodating and attentive. Thanks for a great meal!

During our five-day stay in Edinburgh, we ate here twice and really enjoyed the experience. With so many Asian restaurants in the city—which was a bit surprising for such a compact place—it was nice to find a spot with a more traditional English style. Located on the main street leading to the city center, the restaurant offers delicious food and a friendly atmosphere. The staff was welcoming, and the overall experience was great. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a tasty meal in a cozy setting.

Courier forgot to ask for code first and gave our order to junkies in the street. one of the junkies had taken a bite out of my £15 pizza which I was looking forward to. Not entirely the couriers fault but it was a bit of a joke.

We took a large group to City Restaurant. The food and service was superb. The staff were very friendly and extremely efficient. Good communication to check our needs before we arrived too. We left with lots of happy, well fed people. Thanks to all, we will be back.

I really liked this restaurant. The food was very good and the service impeccable. We were very well received there! The waiter even offered us a better seat near the window, very nice! I also tried a new drink (a vanilla soda, a very good discovery). I highly recommend this restaurant!

A great place to eat nice fish and chips. The booth was very posh, the table was shiny and plates and cutlery were quality. The staff were nice. The prices were very good. We booked in advanced. It is near festival theatre, so it can be fully booked around events there. The tables near the window have great views of the street. We had scampi and battered fish and chips, tea, ice-cream, brownie which were awesome.

Walked in to try some of their fish and chips. We were seated properly for a table of two in the upstairs section, which is very nice. The fish and chips itself was on the oiler side so if you like earlier food, then this would definitely hit the spot otherwise Would say that it was all right. They did offer some sauces on the side chips however, if you’re not a chip, you could substitute in onion rings for an extra cost. for two people to orders, efficient chips and a drink. It came up to around 40 pounds so pricewise it was decent but still on the more expensive side for what you got.

I had been to City Restaurant before and the food was decent. Tonight though I had a Haddock Supper to take away and to say it was disappointing would be an understatement. The fish was smelly and greasy and beginning to rot, giving off a sour smell. Surely the staff were aware of this? I am a forgiving customer, but there can be no excuses for that. Will never return.

The burgers were so bad. absolutely horrible, neither of us ate them, the dogs had them. The burger meat was a slab of patê and the buns were soggy with the amount of sauce thrown over the side of them. Chips were fine but terrible burgers unfortunately, so expensive too!

My first haggis was from @city_rest95 which is right next to the Festival Theatre…perfect for my dinner before going to a show! The staff were super friendly and the food was nice…the fish and chips that the table next to me was having looked yummy too 😆

Love coming to City Restaurant with my family for lunch. Atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, service is excellent and the food is great. Upstairs also serves beers, wines and cocktails. Thoroughly recommend!

We stumbled across City Restaurant on our way to the National Museum. So glad we did! We shared the Haggis Bonbons as a starter. They were delicious. Piping hot, beautifully seasoned and served with a lovely sauce. Our mains were a burger with bacon and grilled pineapple, and battered prawns with chips. All very good. My cappuccino and my husband’s milk shake were excellent. Friendly service and fresh, bright decor. We will visit again.

The pizza here is absolutely incredible. The quattro formaggi pizza is the cheesiest pizza I've ever had, and their macaroni cheese side is also very good. Fair prices for food too! My only complaint is that £3 for a small glass of fizzy drink is a bit excessive. Will definitely visit again!

I had the City Burger and was a bit disappointed with the taste and there was something indefinable on top that could only be achieved with a lot of struggle with the knives 😁 so I definitely won't be a regular here and can't recommend it from my side. The service was very friendly, hence the third star, otherwise it would only be two.

I ordered my food at roughly 13:12 and didn’t get it until about 16:10 this is ridiculous when I tried to cancel my order it wouldn’t give me the option to cancel it just kept saying your food is being prepared by the time the food came it wasn’t needed anymore as my colleague had left work

City Restaurant never disappoints. The food won't blow your socks off, but it's tasty, fresh, and always good. The portion sizes are great, and it's more or less average price for the area. It's basically a chippy you can sit in. What's not to like? The service is good and the staff are all friendly, it's always busy which gives it a good atmosphere. It's very handy for a pre theatre meal if you're seeing a show next door. The highlight of the meal was the honeycomb cheesecake, which was phenomenal. Definitely recommend.

Turned up at 6 o clock on a Thursday without a reservation, but luckily they had a free table. Welcomed well and shown to our table speedily as we were going to the festival theatre for a show at 7.30. Order taken quickly and efficiently, arrived within about 15 minutes, I had a great tasting and sizeable portion of breaded fish and chips which was delicious and my partner had an equally good sized portion of haggis, needs and tatties with a whisky sauce, which was also delicious. I had a sugar free irn bru and my partner had a latte. £36 all in, such great food and service I volunteered a 10% tip, so about £40. All done and dusted by 7pm. Happy customers, great food.

The City Restaurant is an Edinburgh institution. A sit-in chip in the middle of the city, they have been serving up delicious chip shop favourites and more for longer than I can remember On the menu are the usual fish and chips, pizzas, and burgers you can normally find in most chip shops. With some other tasty treats thrown in, too. The menu is stacked with all manner of different dishes, and it may take you a little while to decide on exactly what you want!! Our table of 5 ordered some haggis bon bons for a starter. Then fish and chips, chicken and chips, and a pizza. All the food went down a storm with us. It was all piping hot and served up quickly. The Staff are all very friendly and happy to serve food with a smile The restaurant can be found next door to The Festival Theatre. So if you are in town for a theatre trip it's the most convenient place to enjoy some pre show dinner. I'd recommend this place to anyone who likes traditional chippy food aswell as burgers and pizzas Top quality tasty food at great prices

Quite small and busy and has more of a take away vibe than a proper restaurant..the food is average..if you need a table for 1 you won't get a window table..not my kind of restaurant

Fantastic restaurant, very clean, staff very friendly, helpful. I had there king rib supper & fried mars bar. Honestly I have had deep fried mars bars in various restaurants /chip shops... This was the best fried mars bar I have ever had, I was expecting the food to be slightly greasy... They definitely do not use trans fats in there oil. My only reservation is that it is very busy, with lots of chatter from surrounding tables... Apart from that I will definitely be visiting again. I will take photos of my food during my next visit

We visited without booking and we were seated in the 2nd floor in 5 minutes. The atmosphere is great and the service is good, food came fast and was very good fish and chips (regular and sweet potatoes). Would recommend

Been here a couple of times now and always during the Fringe. Place was very busy but despite this the service and food was great. Had fishcake starter was very tasty and good portion for starter. Then had the the fish and chips which was equally delicious good portion size and the piece of fish was excellent and fresh. Couple this with friendly effeciant service whilst very busy and under pressure means 5 stars for me. They have good sized menu and choice aswell as drink options. Highly recommend.

The best tradittional haddock and chips. The fish taste really good and cooked just right. The chips are fried to perfection the tarta sauce is very nice and the curry sauce is amazing. Really impressed with the quick service. The staff are very friendly. This place as nice seating very clean. If i could give thos place a 20 star review i would. Really tasty and fresh. Best place and not too pricey seing though it is in edinburgh. A must visit if you need some food on your visit to edinburgh

Staff were great. Had the steak pie and it was ... Ok. Meat was very fatty and the pastry was chewy. Chips were nice though

The fish and chips is amazing. Really big and plenty enough for a good meal! You wont go out hungry. The mac and cheese is basic but it's also a very basic dish. They serve it with some kind of bacon wich makes it better but it's also 2 pounds extra. The service is very quick ! The menu has a wide range from fish to burger to some normal dishes. This is definitely a good place to stop for Scottish food at really reasonable prices.

Quite close to the Festival theatre. Took my teen and her friend for brunch and we really enjoyed the food. The children had omelette and cheesy chips. All the dishes were tasty and very happy with the polite staff and service as well. Definitely will be going back again soon.

Relaxed atmosphere with really tasty food. The staff were very welcoming and it's dog friendly too. It was the perfect end to our day in Edinburgh.
