Nice pub. Staff are either quite short or too busy. Food wasn't that nice. Baguette Hard and dry. Nice pub and surroundings with a garden for dogs...that's it's most redeeming feature.

A wonderful old pub with a great selection of food (the pie of the day was delicious) and an impressive array of beers including low alcohol beers. Staff were efficient and the prices are excellent. Highly recommended.

Haven't been here in a long time, food was good, not sure if this place has been taken over as it doesn't quite have the same warm atmosphere it use to, but overall nice pub lovely location

Lovely pub with great food menu. Good allergy menu and awareness from the kitchen staff. Great for doing a walk along the sea wall or fields behind the church and stopping for lunch after. Last orders on for about 15-20 mins before it says they stop serving on the website times.

We came down to rescue some greyhounds and weren't sure where to go for food. The Chequers was recommended to us and didn't disappoint! I can't recommended enough - great food, really friendly staff, cozy but spacious and a lovely atmosphere. Would recommend to anyone!

Beautiful old inn, nestled away in Goldhanger. Exactly what you want from a proper pub; great food (and plenty of it to boot), lovely staff, well-kept ales and a cosy, welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours. What more could you ask for? Love it.

One of my favourite pubs in Essex. Character by the ton, always popular but rarely so busy they can't fit you in. Take a walk along the Blackwater river, then call in to refuel.

A really friendly welcome as always, accomodating a dog while we had some superior sandwiches and a bowl of chips, as well as some really wonderful Mauldons Silver Adder. Really glad we had recommended this pub for a stop.

Called in today for lunch after a lovely walk along the sea wall. We both had the chicken fillet in a brioche bun with chips - delicious! Friendly staff, great beer, sat outside in their lovely sunny garden - couldn't have been better.

Lovely cosy atmosphere, and ideal for ramblers & cyclists for its proximity to the Blackwater. Thoroughly enjoyed the food and the staff were friendly & helpful. Great to see a bar billiards table & we enjoyed exploring the side rooms.

Good pub grub. Dogs allowed in the lovely enclosed beer garden and in one side room though unfortunately not in the main area. Real old fashioned village community pub feel.

We've popped in a couple of times for a drink whilst out and about on a walk. Lovely friendly staff, good music, nice relaxing outdoor space which I noticed was dog-friendly. Good choice of non-alcoholic drinks. Fabulous and pretty location. We did not eat so I cannot comment on food. Really nice traditional pub. Would go again.

Our party of 4 had cycled there from Heybridge last month. They let us take our Bromptons through the pub to the garden for security which was a good start. Beer was first class as was food and service. Highly recommended

The food is excellent. Cajun chicken followed by lemon pie. Service good, prices reasonable. If you are looking for a meal in a nice pub, then give this one a try.

Didn't eat this time, have eaten here before and food was very good. Review is for their beer, most notably the addition of Cruzcampo to the draft beers..A must on a hot day...on the rare occasion we are blessed with same.

Good country pub can get very busy at Sunday lunchtime worth a visit if in area.

Seems to have changed a lot since we last visited, which is a shame, used to have get there early to get a table, but place was almost empty although they seemed to have a large booking for the restaurant side. Menu has changed in the regard that you didn't have the daily chef choices on the wall just one chicken and leek pie 😕 It was okay wouldn't give it a negative but certainly not a 👍just not as goood as it used to be, but that is just my personal opinion, sorry Chequers 😔

Popular rural pub, traditional & welcoming. Very popular, glad we booked a table. The menu has a good selection of options, as well as the expected Sunday roast. Service was a little slow, but they were extremely busy & all staff were doing their best. Prices were reasonable & main course was good - Jerk steak was cooked as requested but charring/seasoning was not that evident. Spicy prawns are very nice, but only 4 & quite small. Lots of lattice chips & fresh salad completed my plate. My mother had the crispy chicken which she said was very nice & almost too much! Desserts were even better - blueberry frangipane with cream & cheesecake with ice-cream.

This Sunday lunch was brilliant..but also went 1st July on my wife's birthday...it was tremendous!!!

Delicious Sunday roast dinner and Steak and kidney pudding dinner, reasonably priced good quality food, friendly staff in comfortable surroundings.we will definitely be back.

Great Inn. Dog friendly areas. Warm log burner in the small bar we were in. Roast Sirloin of Beef sandwich with horseradish sauce was nice. Beef was really tender. Friendly staff and owners.

Great food and a nice range of beers and wines in a beautiful, old, original inn, lovely staff.

Taken there for birthday celebration meal and I'm glad I wasn't the one paying. It's just a basic pub in a little village. Parking is a very small area with lots of pot holes so unsuitable for wheelchair users. You can however park on the road. Cosy fire awaits inside if the weather outside is a bit grim. Three or four separate areas to eat. Staff very friendly and attentive. Meals were all served fairly quickly, nice+hot. One of our party had the chicken pie+there was more pastry than meat and probably a bit too large for the average person..but in general average pub meal.

Very friendly staff, great selection of beers and not to mention the Sahara nuts. Yet to try the food, but others around us seemed very happy with their meals. Good ambience with some music from our younger days. Highly recommended

Lovely pub and smashing Sunday lunches

Quite disapointed with our experience haven't been here for a couple of years it's not as good as it was in the past

We were very disappointed in the service and the length of time it took between courses.we as a party of eight who had preordered our menu choices had Hard vegetables some of the mains were not up to scratch we were sat in a cold corner with little heating where the main room had a beautiful open fire . After complaining we were given our drinks for free but a smile would have gone a long way. Such a shame as have had some great times there.

Dom and the team offer a super friendly warm welcome. Food is excellent and real fires make it nice and cosy. Dogs allowed in the smaller bars.

So disappointing. Food used to be top notch. No longer. Microwaved to extinction, poorly presented with no taste or pleasure. Child's plate was scalding hot, vegetarian dish a pile of slop. Used to go weekly or more. Never again.

Real British beer battered Fish & Chips.. Chicken bacon leak pie was so good... Good selection of fresh beer from the tap.

Lovely pub in the countryside of goldhanger prices are amazing and food is superb all food is cooked and made in house, had the brownie as a dessert.Best one I have had in a good few years.

Popped in for a snack. Food was really good, coffee was lukewarm, unfortunately. Will return and try the full menu, it looks really good.

The owner Dominic was most helpful and his staff were very friendly and efficient. We had a really lovely meal, which we choose from the varied menu and ate in the spacious courtyard. It was hard to pick a dessert as they all sounded yummy! A really lovely pub in a quiet village location, close to the coast.

I visited the Chequers for the first time. It is a delightful pub set in a lovely village. The Food is Excellent and the Staff so friendly and accommodating. During my visit a group of Classic Cars arrived and then the Morris Men and Women started dancing outside the pub. There are beautiful walks around the village and on the estuary wall. I had a wonderful time and highly recommend to anyone this lovely pub and village. Cannot wait to visit again!
