Great to see the new owners doing well. They have brought in local drinks of all kinds to help smaller businesses. The food is moderate price but you get a very good portion which makes the price worth it. Really recommend, this is one of my favourite local country pubs!

Our first visit to Chequers, was first class, the food and service was excellent. (although no busy) We returned 3 weeks later and had a completely different experience. Firstly we were put into a cave like area, (which was cold, my feet were numb when we left). I had to use torch on my phone to read the menu, it was so dark. The drinks we ordered took ages to arrive, when they did arrive they were wrong. 2 of our party ordered the roast beef lunch, which was only warm, not hot. The service was non existent. The only good thing about Chequers was the young girl, who was the only one who seemed to know what she was doing. We were planning to book for our Christmas get-together, but shall look for another venue.

You have a beautiful pub / restaurant , the food and service was excellent . The only thing that let you down was the toilets ( the ladies) The smell was awful, the toilet cisterns didn't flush properly so they were not clean, everything thing reminded me of a school toilet area , peeling paint on the walls just not a nice experience. Prior to using the loo I had been contemplating bringing my family sand friends. Such a shame. Maybe you could get a local company to sponsor a refurbishment of them ?

The food is the main critique as it’s the main reason for our visit. It was a set menu, pre ordered a week earlier and I think that was when it was cooked. Comedy night unfortunately flopped. The headline act never turned up. Service was good and the venue around the back was quaint. In all, not a good experience

The £23 "Tender" pork loin. Paid another £3.75 for a side of veg to make it a substantial mean so £26.75 in total. The veg was cold and under cooked and the pork loin was so dry it was pretty frankly horrible.

Food was really good, surprisingly good!!! however the service was very slow. Over 2 hours for a 3 course lunch with the wait between courses 25 mins which kills the mood. Maybe it’s different over the weekend but when we visited on a Friday it looks like minimal staff are working as we were the 2nd table when we arrived and when we left we were the 5th so not sure why the kitchen struggled. Echoing other recent review - yes colder inside than outside.

It's obviously changed hands since i was there in 2020 and certainly not for the better. The girl behind the bar was constantly on her phone and I had to attract her attention every time I needed service. The pub was soulless and cold it was actually warmer outside and that was 20 Deg. In my opinion it needs a good deep clean to get rid of a foul dirty smelly. I ordered the ox liver( why not lambs) and my wife ordered the haddock. Waited 25 mins for it to arrive. Both dishes went back as the liver was very tough and the fish wasn't cooked properly it was slimy and smelt. If it was possible I would not give it any stars but it's not. We paid for our drinks and left. We will never step foot in this place again. Time to lean, time to clean We visited at 14.15 on Tuesday 9th July.

The menu looks interesting, but the food is actually lacking in presentation and flavour and overpriced for what you actually get. The pub itself has an overpowering smell, as if airfreshners are being used to hide an unpleasant smell. Make sure you don't get seated at the table near the toilets! It was so bad, that thankfully we sat outside whilst the sun shone, but when the sun went in, we sadly had to go inside to eat, which wasn't a great experience. The only saving grace was the lovely waitress that served during our visit. Unfortunately, I won't be visiting this pub again.

Disappointed. Had beef roast, beef tough, veg ok Yorkshire was good, roast potatoes let down . Why is that that pubs can’t do roast potatoes!!!? They were bland not roasted at all! Also half potato on each plates. But didn’t matter because no one ate them. Slightly undercooked. Also menu board said two courses for £19.95. So ordered starter and main from the board. When it came to paying for meal, guy said it’s only apply to main and dessert!!! Ehhh. He said it was on menu but forgot to add it to board display of £19.95. Wasn’t particularly apologetic either. Wouldn’t have asked for starter had we known. So I’m afraid I won’t be going back. . Sorry un like me to complain but this was disappointing.

A really disappointing visit. Not particularly busy yet waited so long for drinks we had to flag someone over. Starters were ok but roast dinners were a long way off the quality of other local places. Beef was tough and very well done, our roast potatoes were actually white, in fact some so pale we wondered if they were boiled. It didnt taste terrible and some aspects were nice (yorkshires) but generally not a brilliant offering for the money. Whilst choosing our meals we'd decided not to have a starter but one of our party pointed to the sign next to us saying £19.95 for 2 courses, we opted therefore for a starter. When the bill came we were charged full price (closer to £25) I queried and was firstly informed the "the board is wrong, we are taking it down later" I asked them to sense check that with manager, i actually had to ask a couple of times. The manager comes over and was a little off and argumentative saying the t's and c's are on menu (not directed to menu on the board) and only applied to desert and again the board is wrong and its more money now anyway. For the record the board is about 40 x the size of the t's and c's on menu and if they knew it was wrong it shouldnt have been up. The description online even says "unfussy place with chalkboard menus", I guess thats wrong too. They clearly didnt care and had no inclination to attempt to pacify, so we politely paid the bill and left.

Mean while bar staff just standing around chatting , asked for manager and out come yet another rather young person and all she could say was sorry , nothing to try and save reputation of restaurant, will. never go back, needs adults to run place,we went to recruiting Sargent on off chance, we got table , order taken and meal within 20 mins, fantastic

A warm welcome to begin with, with a good selection of drinks. Local ales were particularly of note. Not an extensive selection, but enough to be interesting. Pigeon breast to start was a real treat. Nicely prepared and presented. Rhubarb jus was tasty. Would benefit from a little more considering the portion size of the meat. Pork belly was superb! I'm glad I asked for extra apple sauce. This was great, but again needed a bit extra to accompany the portion size. All the elements were excellent, making a really great mouthful when combined. An important sign of well matched elements. Trout fillet was cooked beautifully! The sauce was really good, but not outstanding. A lovely cheese selection and Lemon posset for dessert. The lemon was fabulous, and a very well flavoured mango sorbet to accompany. After a bit of a hiccup at the start, service was really attentive and friendly. Definitely coming here again. Dog friendly, for those that care. :-)

When the food came it was cold and the garlic bread was burnt. The food itself once it was re heated was tasty, we waited an hour from ordering our food to it being served cold. We wanted a Sunday roast for a party of 12 and this was recommended by a friend. However, it was a very disappointing meal, the roast was bland, and the desserts were not nice at all, we didn't even finish it! The crumble was stogey and custard was gloopy. The yorkshire pudding was burnt and the gravy was watery. The pub itself wasn't that busy, yet it was still hard to get the waiters attention. However, that said, there was a girl who was friendly and apologetic to us when she served us, hence the 2 stars for service. There was quite some wait for the despite us ordering in advance as we were a big party group; even the kids ice cream took about 10mins to be served, we had to chase it! Overall, I wouldn't recommend but hopefully it was just a one off for them?

Great venue with excellent staff but most of the components on the vegetarian roast could use some work: - Came with steamed new potatoes, even though the menu said roasted new potatoes - Came with steamed parsnips and carrots, even though the menu said roasted carrots and parsnips. The parsnip was also quite hard. - No Yorkshire pudding - No cauliflower cheese - we asked about this and were provided with a small pot, which was nothing like any cauliflower cheese we've ever had - it seemed semi-pureed, no large pieces I understand that the last two points may have been because they want to also cater for vegan guests, but the steamed potatoes and vegetables were really quite disappointing. That said, the nut roast itself was really lovely with lots of great flavours. I had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was wonderful. We'd come again but probably on another day of the week.

My family and I attended for Sunday lunch here yesterday and having been to the Chequers for food before and previously been quite impressed, I can honestly say it was quite disappointing. The waitress didn't seem to know an awful lot about the food when questions were being asked and when the food arrived the beef cuts were really cheap tasting and tough, the cauliflower cheese was stone cold and the veg was very bland to say the least. Also, the menu reads that the vegetarian option comes with "roasted baby potatoes" and they were just boiled potatoes, which I didn't eat, because I don't like them. My mum's meal also said it came with stuffing and it didn't. If you're charging £15.50 for a one course Sunday dinner, it should probably be of a pretty good quality and it just wasn't unfortunately. When letting the waitress know that certain items were missing from our dishes, she seemed exasperated, which made us feel bad for saying anything. The toilets were also really smelly, which you don't expect for a food establishment. I was quite embarrassed having recommended the Chequers to my family who wanted a decent Sunday roast after a hard weekend of house moving. I can't say we'll be booking again. 2 stars only because the Yorkshire puddings were half decent.

We went here for as meal, and had asked to be seated in a quiet end, due to having an assistance dog and company with autism. Sadly we were sat in the middle of the room, and it felt cold as we were in front of a door with a draft coming through it. Would have been much nicer if they had lit a log fire and had a few less tables crammed in allowing a little additional space around each one. Also listening to a customer's request for seating preferences. The food however was good and very filling. Even making sure that young ones had something to occupy them whilst waiting for the food.

A very disappointing 89.99 Xmas meal. Our booking was for 3pm. We had a drink before being shown to our completely plain looking table at 3.10, no effort to make it look Christmassy whatsoever. It then took until 4.15 for our starter to arrive and then the chaos just continued. Other diners were experiencing the same problem as us with the food taking so long. We finally got our main course around 5ish and it was barely warm. This is the first time eating out on Xmas day and it was so disappointing and stressful. It was meant to be enjoyable and relaxing but it was ruined. It wasn’t just the food, the staff were all stressed out because the whole thing was poorly organised. All they could do was apologise and say that other diners were feeling the same. One waitress said the kitchen wasn’t capable of coping with 170 bookings.

Our Christmas Day ruined. I would like to give no stars!!! We were put in a cold barn and not the pub - not what we booked. It was freezing. The door was open the whole time in December. There were no table cloths. Paper napkins. Very very cheap crackers. A candle, which remained unlit even though I requested it was lit. Not what you would expect on Christmas Day when it was £89 per person. To get to the said barn we had to go through the pub, outside and through the smoking area, which was unkempt and had dog mess on the path. It felt like going to a roadside cafe. The cutlery wasn’t even set out correctly 😳. My glass was dirty. The service was appalling. The food was dreadful. My father had one roast potato on his dinner. The sprouts were rock hard. We had to send our food back as it was burnt. Nobody was offered any condiments not even cranberry sauce. We had a metal disc in the pudding. The table was tiny and would barely sit 4 and there were 5 of us. They told us we couldn’t put one on the end as we would be in their way. But we couldn’t fit, let alone eat. They said nobody has ever complained, but we heard multiple complaints. The table next to us left and said they would never return. We also will never return. The attitudes of the staff and owner was disappointing. I overheard a staff member complaining about the customers.

Old World pub, thatched roof, traditional windows. The food was delicious, the portions were very generous, and the service was very efficient. I would highly recommend it.

Very Friendly staff. Excellent food and service. Portions are generous and food is cooked and presented well. Good value for money, especially when one of their 30% offers is on. By far my favorite place to eat.
