We waited 15 minutes to get menus and to order drinks so we had to go to the bar to do this, when the girl did come eventually to take our drinks order we had enough time to decide what we wanted to eat so we ordered it all at the same time. When the food came it was cold and the garlic bread was burnt. The food itself once it was re heated was tasty, we waited an hour from ordering our food to it being served cold. Unfortunately I think this girl was on her own in the pub so it was not her fault. I would not go again

We went to the cheques for a birthday meal . Well never again there were 10 of us and most of us had the roast we waited a long time for it to come out and when it did they were all cold one had the beer batter fish and chips and that was cold. We don't mind waiting a while but when they all come out cold after waiting a long time it's not good. I would not recommend this pub to anyone. It used to be really popular but no longer popular,it's such a shame

Very disappointed. Lovely setting, good selection of beers, staff very nice, but the food is not great which is a shame. Has so much potential. We have to talk about the chips? I have no idea how they were so bad, but they must be reheated or old as they were chewy and just awful. They even looked anemic. Cheapest and easiest thing to get right but these were bad.

We wanted a Sunday roast for a party of 12 and this was recommended by a friend. However, it was a very disappointing meal, the roast was bland, and the desserts were not nice at all, we didn't even finish it! The crumble was stogey and custard was gloopy. The yorkshire pudding was burnt and the gravy was watery. The pub itself wasn't that busy, yet it was still hard to get the waiters attention. However, that said, there was a girl who was friendly and apologetic to us when she served us, hence the 2 stars for service. There was quite some wait for the despite us ordering in advance as we were a big party group; even the kids ice cream took about 10mins to be served, we had to chase it! Overall, I wouldn't recommend but hopefully it was just a one off for them?

Great venue with excellent staff but most of the components on the vegetarian roast could use some work: - Came with steamed new potatoes, even though the menu said roasted new potatoes - Came with steamed parsnips and carrots, even though the menu said roasted carrots and parsnips. The parsnip was also quite hard. - No Yorkshire pudding - No cauliflower cheese - we asked about this and were provided with a small pot, which was nothing like any cauliflower cheese we've ever had - it seemed semi-pureed, no large pieces I understand that the last two points may have been because they want to also cater for vegan guests, but the steamed potatoes and vegetables were really quite disappointing. That said, the nut roast itself was really lovely with lots of great flavours. I had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert which was wonderful. We'd come again but probably on another day of the week.

Surprisingly dead on a Friday evening. Food was excellent, but service was bizarrely slow considering there was barely anyone else in there. We were stuck on a small table by a draughty chimney, which was odd when as it turned out they could have given us any table. It took 30 minutes for our order to be taken. Staff just seemed to disappear. When we asked for our bill it came and then the waitress disappeared to clean the few other tables and seemed surprised when I wanted to pay. Very strange that this isn't more popular given the quality of the food and the interesting menu choices

My family and I attended for Sunday lunch here yesterday and having been to the Chequers for food before and previously been quite impressed, I can honestly say it was quite disappointing. The waitress didn't seem to know an awful lot about the food when questions were being asked and when the food arrived the beef cuts were really cheap tasting and tough, the cauliflower cheese was stone cold and the veg was very bland to say the least. Also, the menu reads that the vegetarian option comes with "roasted baby potatoes" and they were just boiled potatoes, which I didn't eat, because I don't like them. My mum's meal also said it came with stuffing and it didn't. If you're charging £15.50 for a one course Sunday dinner, it should probably be of a pretty good quality and it just wasn't unfortunately. When letting the waitress know that certain items were missing from our dishes, she seemed exasperated, which made us feel bad for saying anything. The toilets were also really smelly, which you don't expect for a food establishment. I was quite embarrassed having recommended the Chequers to my family who wanted a decent Sunday roast after a hard weekend of house moving. I can't say we'll be booking again. 2 stars only because the Yorkshire puddings were half decent.

We went here for as meal, and had asked to be seated in a quiet end, due to having an assistance dog and company with autism. Sadly we were sat in the middle of the room, and it felt cold as we were in front of a door with a draft coming through it. Would have been much nicer if they had lit a log fire and had a few less tables crammed in allowing a little additional space around each one. Also listening to a customer's request for seating preferences. The food however was good and very filling. Even making sure that young ones had something to occupy them whilst waiting for the food.

A very disappointing 89.99 Xmas meal. Our booking was for 3pm. We had a drink before being shown to our completely plain looking table at 3.10, no effort to make it look Christmassy whatsoever. It then took until 4.15 for our starter to arrive and then the chaos just continued. Other diners were experiencing the same problem as us with the food taking so long. We finally got our main course around 5ish and it was barely warm. This is the first time eating out on Xmas day and it was so disappointing and stressful. It was meant to be enjoyable and relaxing but it was ruined. It wasn’t just the food, the staff were all stressed out because the whole thing was poorly organised. All they could do was apologise and say that other diners were feeling the same. One waitress said the kitchen wasn’t capable of coping with 170 bookings.

Our Christmas Day ruined. I would like to give no stars!!! We were put in a cold barn and not the pub - not what we booked. It was freezing. The door was open the whole time in December. There were no table cloths. Paper napkins. Very very cheap crackers. A candle, which remained unlit even though I requested it was lit. Not what you would expect on Christmas Day when it was £89 per person. To get to the said barn we had to go through the pub, outside and through the smoking area, which was unkempt and had dog mess on the path. It felt like going to a roadside cafe. The cutlery wasn’t even set out correctly 😳. My glass was dirty. The service was appalling. The food was dreadful. My father had one roast potato on his dinner. The sprouts were rock hard. We had to send our food back as it was burnt. Nobody was offered any condiments not even cranberry sauce. We had a metal disc in the pudding. The table was tiny and would barely sit 4 and there were 5 of us. They told us we couldn’t put one on the end as we would be in their way. But we couldn’t fit, let alone eat. They said nobody has ever complained, but we heard multiple complaints. The table next to us left and said they would never return. We also will never return. The attitudes of the staff and owner was disappointing. I overheard a staff member complaining about the customers.

Lovely picturesque pub. Food was lovely and reasonably priced. We had 3 children in our party which were well catered for with kids menu and a high chair that was available. Even though we had bit of a wait for our food, this would have been overlooked if we then had not had to experience the rudeness of a member of staff. She spoke to a member of our group for having a vape. If a customer is doing something they do not allow then there are ways of dealing with this politely. Not the way she dealt with it. She was extremely rude and spoke to our family member like she was a child. Her poor attitude continued when she served dessert. The filthy look she gave to members of our group was totally unneccessary. Why is this person working in a customer facing role when it's clear she does not have qualities required for this position. On this note, we are unlikely to visit again. Such a shame she had to spoil a 90th birthday family meal. Date of visit:

After reading some recent negative reviews we were a bit apprehensive, but we had a lovely experience and the food was great. The mainly young staff were attentive and courteous and our group of 8, plus a baby were all pleased with our meals. The steak was cooked perfectly, veg burger and tofu halloumi style salad were very tasty. The coffee and chocolate brownie was huge, with large chunks of fudge and really tasty...enough to share between two. All food was hot, well presented and all adequate portion sizes and reasonable value for money. As an added bonus, there was live music and BBQ, with a mini beer festival in the large garden and the pub was lively, but relaxed and very welcoming. The building itself is attractive and welcoming. The ladies loos weren't plush, but clean and adequate. I'd definitely recommend visiting and seeing for yourself, rather than taking too much notice of negative reviews. I was overcharged when ordering meals, and had to point out that two £14 meals should cost £28, not £28.50. Eventually the Manageress was called, and she did finally agree that I should only be charged £28. The overpaid cash was handed back without apology or explanation, which I thought was simply rude. Ham egg and chips should not have been hard to prepare, but the ham was mostly fat and rind, and the eggs were so over cooked as to be virtually solid - white as well as yoke. Had to go to the bar to remind them that I had paid for and was waiting for desert. Altogether a pretty dismal experience, one I will most certainly not be repeating.

I will be recommending this to all of my friends if they happen to be in the predicament of needing food in the area. Overall 10/10 I would give 15/10 if I could LOL.

Our sever Abbie was attentive, polite and quite frankly the best part of our experience. We waited over an hour for our main courses with only 2 other tables in the restaurant… When the food arrived it was extremely mediocre. One ordered the apricot chicken which quite frankly arrived like an Hors d'Oeuvres, an £20 Hors d'Oeuvres. We ordered the donuts, by doughnuts it was 3 biscuits shaped golf balls… The 2 stars are quite frankly for the service and nothing else.

We booked into Chequers for Saturday evening meal, unfortunately we hadn't been put in the book, however, they did find a table, my husband had Liver and mash, he said it was the nicest liver he's eaten in a long time, I had the vegetarian pasta,it was delicious, the staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, will definitely go again next time we are in the area.

Group of 5 booking. We arrived at 6.45pm for our evening meal. Two of the group decided to have a starter, The crab starter was extremely disappointing, even the diners on the table near to us complained to the waitress about the crab starter, did she pass concerns on to the chef? We then waited over an hour and 10 minutes from when 2 of our group finished their starter to receiving our main. Two of the group had the lamb pie,1 Sea Bass,1Salmon and 1 Tuna burger. The tuna burger was the only meal which got a good review. I would have said about this on the night but my mother asked me not to.as she said we just wont come here again. We have dined at The Chequers on many occasion since 2010,and always enjoyed the food, also when coming in group work party's. Food not up to standard for prices especially the starters. Flavourless.

Good clean room. Not huge, but big enough for a couple. Food on-site was reasonable quality. Very friendly and polite reception staff.

One of my favourite garden centres. Lovely homewares and then so much choice when it comes to plants. This place is like a Tardis! Plants all healthy and well looked after too.
