The Chequers always used to be a good bet for reasonably priced decent food with some interesting options on the menu - provided you could find a table. The main menu, as shown on the website looked promising, including one of our favourites, slow roasted pork belly, which we were looking forward to having. No problems in finding a table - the place was three quarters empty - and it soon became apparent why. Upon arrival we were presented with a much slimmed down version of the menu, compared to what is on the website, with all the more complex dishes including the pork belly omitted. A sign on the bar counter invited us to "check out the specials board" but, you've guessed it, the board was blank. What a disappointment! In the end, we opted for burgers, and for something as straightforward as a burger and given the place was far from busy, the wait for the food was unacceptably long. Actually, the burgers were very good when they eventually arrived, except for being served on plates that were far too small, so the chips kept dropping off the side onto the table. They also seemed to have some issue with salt pots - whilst pepper pots were available in abundance, apparently no salt pot in the house, so we had to make do with those little sachets - memories of Covid times. At £18 for a burger, over a fiver for a pint plus 10% discretionary service charge added to the bill (including on the drinks which we actually collected ourselves from the bar), this is no longer the good value venue it once was. Cost cutting seems to be the order of the day here. The heating, if on at all, was turned down very low. But we also got the impression the place was being run on minimal staff - probably just a barmaid/waitress and a chef/cook. The young lady serving was actually very friendly and polite, no doubt doing her best under the circumstances, hence we did not ask for the service charge to be removed. Meanwhile minimal staff in the kitchen probably meant they were unable to produce any of the more complex dishes on the menu and had to cook just a small number of items at a time, therefore the burgers presumably did no go on until earlier orders had been completed. The staff were, no doubt, doing their best under the circumstances, but management really need to look at how this pub is run, including staffing levels, otherwise it will find itself in a perpetual downhill spiral.

I'd had this pub recommended to us so wanted to try for myself.I can not fault the staff who were very pleasant. Myself and my husband had the chilli and rice with garlic bread. We found the chilli very bland and dry and a rather small portion. We did however like the cheesy garlic bread. Perhaps we went with higher expectations but we came away disappointed.

This well located pub is happy to provide overnight parking for any motorhome travellers who are happy to give patronage to the establishment, and it is well worth giving the bar and restaurant a visit. It is fair to say we got off to a "rocky" start, we were shown to a table that was in serious need of additional wedges to make it level and sturdy, this was addressed immediately with the addition of numerous beer mats. To be fair the pub has original stone flooring so unbalanced tables are probably the norm.We are at the height of this dreaded "C" virus but the pub is well adapted to cope with all social distancing, a very welcoming log fire was burning in the hearth, a comprehensive menu and specials board was available along with two real ales. The pub was well supported and the food we were served was well presented and really tasty. It was only after we settled the bill that I discovered the landlord and landlady have only been at the pub for the past two/three weeks, I wish them well for their future and commend them on what they have already achieved. In these difficult trading times the "atmosphere" of any pub is far from the usual, having said that the Chequers provides a warm welcome, good food and good ale it is unfortunate that the experience cant be enjoyed by more people.

We didn’t plan to eat here, but so very pleased we did - couldn’t fault anything considering it was their first day! The staff were helpful and attentive, COVID precautions were excellent, good distance between tables & everyone wearing masks. Unfortunate that some customers ignored the signage and used the exit to enter the pub, but you can’t blame the tenants for that - perhaps the customers couldn’t read or just felt that the rules did not apply to them!Couldn’t fault our light lunch of soup and a roll for my husband, a bacon, brie & mango sandwich served with chips for me, just wish we lived local or perhaps we can persuade them to come to Lincoln. We wish you every success in these very difficult times.

Stopped here to break the journey down from Lancashire. Just a couple of minutes off the M40. The restaurant uses an indoor barbecue, Bertha, to cook a range of excellent meats. I opted for the steak and ribs which were excellent and for once, when I requested a blue steak, it was cooked exactly to my specifications. Absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. My other half opted for the pork, which was served with melt in the mouth crackling. We followed up with Sticky Toffee Pudding and Custard. Service was delightful, staff were friendly and Covid restrictions were meticulously observed to maintain safety, without it being intrusive!

When I explained that we were just going for a short walk he told us that we should have asked him first.Perhaps he woke up this morning with a hangover but he was very unfriendly. We are fortunate to have the other pub in the village, the Ben Jonson that is always welcoming to customers, local or not.

Arrived at the bar 7.53 on a Saturday I know this because the bar person immediately asked if I was there for just drinks. When I said that I had hoped to order meals she said that the food service was closing at 8pm and directed my wife to a table with two seats. Once seated I went to make my way to the bar to get a menu only to be told rather abruptly to remain seated and wait for service. While I appreciate thinks are difficult in this pandemic I still expect a friendly welcome and a bit of courtesy. The absence of these little things was the reason we only had one drink with our meal, no desert or coffee and left without tipping. Our drinks arrived in nice glasses in good time, but the unfriendly greeting and atmosphere and the fact that we had been put on a table with seats at right angles leaving me staring at a wall did not enhance the experience. Our meals which arrived quickly were well presented and delicious served by smart waitresses who were polite and efficient. After finishing our meal I asked for the bill and we paid and left at 8.45.Sadly although the food was excellent we probably will not make an effort to visit this place again due to the fact we were not treated with friendliness and courtesy this time.

After a gap of almost four months, this was my first venture back into a public house. They recommend that you book, under the present circumstances, but at the time of my midweek lunchtime visit the place was very quiet - no wories about social distancing. My first time back on the pub scene did not disappoint. Staff were friendly, service was good and they seem to be well organised whilst still finding their feet in the new post-coronavirus world. It's a picturesque old stone pub with a thatched roof, although it's well modernised inside. There's a decent menu which does not give the impression of having been scaled back as a result of lockdown. I opted for an old favourite: Twice Cooked Belly Pork (£16.95), which came with bubble & squeak, carrots and broccoli, and it was very good. It's a Fullers pub and the ales on offer were London pride and the excellent Dark Star Hophead.

After having to stay in for 3 months due to ill health and at maximum risk from the Corona virus, today was the first day I was allowed out! We researched and decided to go with the Chequers. The lady who took our order over the phone was lovely and explained the veggie selections etc. BUT.............We ordered, Medium/well 8oz steak with all the trimmings, chill, veggie chilli and a kids chicken dippers and chips! The meal was ready on time for collection, but what we got for OVER £35 was shocking!!! The steak definitely wasn’t an 8oz and was full of gristle! The chilli ( cheap mince ) was such a small portion, I went to the local chip shop to get chips to go with it to make it a big enough meal! The veggie chilli was ok but again a small portion and the kids mean was roughly 10 chips and 3 bits of chicken!! ( should be advertised as a toddlers meal! ) Basically we paid £35 for something that shouldn’t have cost anymore than a tenner!!! We were so disappointed, we will never go here again! Cheap ingredients, small portions and high prices!!

Having read the reviews we were looking forward to enjoying tasty home cooked meals. However we found ourselves disappointed with the quality of the food overall. The Oxford blue mushroom starter was a bowl of melted cheese with undercooked mushrooms and 3 tiny strips of cold toast. Service was quick & efficient , always there if more drinks were needed, no long waits for food. My partner said her steak wasn't great, the chips were not exactly what I would call chunky, seasonal veg was sliced carrots & 1 piece of Broccoli. This was a 'half way' meet to catch up for Cmas. I admit I was 15 minutes late due to traffic BUT I was greeted by the manager? who said that we had till 2 when the table was re-booked It was 12.45. I had not seen on the web site the table was time limited as I would not have booked it as we had a lot of catching up to do. We were then pressurised to choose quickly. I had the Beef Strog which has to be the most tasteless one I have ever had. It was warm and had 8 bits of 'meat' in it. It had no taste. It came with a 1/2 baguette of garlic bread which was very strong and would have hidden the lack of taste of the meal but I don't like garlic. It cost £18 so £2 for each bit of meat and £2 for the rest? We were served by a girl with a strong accent and a quiet voice so my hearing impaired friend had no idea what was going on. We were offered pudding menus and told they could serve them very quickly. We declined as there was too little time to enjoy them. However the queue to pay was long and slow and we left at 2.10 and there was no one to force us off our table or a reserved sign put on it. We were not asked if 'everything was ok' as per. My friend had a tough gammon and the other had a steak which he said was fine.I left feeling disappointed, frustrate and with indigestion.

In contrast to 'Fawlty Towers' the Manor down the road, this pub has no pretensions. They just serve good food in a timely friendly professional manner. If you stay in the Manor and get hungry: Go here!

Not much atmosphere as there were few diners. Little bit disappointed with some of the food ( the bubble & squeak) was pretty poor, lots of bubble no squeak! My friends enjoyed their fish lunches the batter was superb! Soups & starters were excellent, the squid was especially succulent. All in all good pub grub.

This is the third time of visiting . It is very convenient for my old school friend and to meet just off the A34 and half way between Southampton and Leicester ( where we each live ) .It is a lovely pub and food based with a varied menu. Why I put ”disappointed “ in my title was purely in the dishes we chose ... I had smashed avocado on toast with poached egg and I asked for a little bacon as an extra . Nothing wrong with that , the poached egg was perfectly done and the avocado fine but the toast was thick , soggy and not very toasty and did n’t bare much resemblance to the photo of the same dish that was on the trip advisor site in July . My friends dish was more disappointing of prawns on flat bread with a mayo garnish . When it arrived she could not see the flatbread for the mound of salad garnish that disguised it which comprised of thick chunks of celery , cucumber and carrot , lettuce , mayo and the prawns . The flat bread when she found it was soggy and she could not finish it as it became not enjoyable . We were asked if we enjoyed the lunch and we did say what I have have just written ....

Staying at a local campsite we visited The Chequers on a Saturday evening, there was a nice atmosphere inside but we opted to site outside as we had our dog with us. There were bowls of water for visiting dogs which is a nice touch. Food was good (we both had the gammon) and our requests were carried out. Some of the food was a little overpriced in my opinion.

I stumbled across this hidden gem through a google search. Needed somewhere near the M40 to conduct a lunch meeting, and this place exceeded my expectation ! The service was punctual and attentive (although the older lady hoovering around was unnecessary and not a great representation for this venue). The food was EXCELLENT, absolutely outstanding for a village pub, better than many awarded restaurants I have frequented - well done the Chef !!

Nice food in a nice pub but the 1 thing we didn't like was the older lady who greeted us kept hovering around us making remarks to our child and making us feel like she was listening to our conversation or checking the kids weren't doing anything wrong if she is the owner and doesn't want kids there then she should just state that

The first thing that strikes you on arriving are the stunning flower displays. We’ve been coming here for years to break our journey, we’ve seen it change hands 3 times. Now on arriving the main object seems to be to rush you to a table. We like to go to the bar to choose and buy a beer and a glass of wine and read the specials board. Another thing that always happens is the beer has a large head. My husband would ask for a top up if at the bar. The menu is now very extensive, not always a good thing. Today we chose Peri Peri chicken and a small rump steak, all very tasty except my steak was medium not medium rare. I didn’t expect the tenderest steak as rump never is. We will continue to leave the M40 for lunch and hope that next time we are allowed to linger at the bar before being frogmarched to the table.

Spotted The Chequers on the way to Upper Heyford circuit so we decided to stop on our way back. We arrived at 5:30pm so asked to have a drink first as they didn’t start serving food until 6pm. The proprietor was very friendly and accommodating, and took our order so it was ready for when they started cooking. We can’t say what it’s like during peak times of an evening but the food came out very quickly and to an excellent standard (steak and avocado/poached egg on sourdough). The wait staff were lovely and efficient. They specialise in gin with an entire menu dedicated to it and the proprietor is very knowledgeable about it. My vanilla latte I had at the end of the meal was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. We are so pleased we decided to stop and if we’re ever back this way again we will definitely return!

After reading reviews we decided to come to eat here after my sons graduation so we were hoping for an enjoyable meal.We received a friendly greeting from,I assume, the landlady, that was the only positive. All 4 main courses were well below average, the chilli was like meat with gravy,no flavour, steaks were gristly and badly cooked. The salmon salad was dreadful, the salmon was burnt, the salad had huge pieces of peppers and veg,not prepared properly at all.The waitress was disinterested,we didn't have anything else,it was incredibly expensive for very badly cooked & presented pub grub.A very sad end to a very enjoyable day.

We had planned to get to The Chequers in time to have a leisurely lunch. It was a perfect place to stop on our way to Malmsbury. Traffic meant we arrived at 2:40 and the pub closed at 3. Rushing in to ask if we could order they said fine. Very chilled took our order; food was superb. No rush for them. We had a great relaxed break. No one said that it was closing.

Whenever we have visitors we take them here and they are always delighted. One of ours from West Wales had the carvery the other, from London is a vegetarian and was offered several options. The Fullers beer is always well kept. In answer to a critic who complained about being seated in a back room with her 3 year old grandchild then I can tell her why. The pub is centuries old, has stone flags, some steps and narrow routes for waiters so, for safety reasons small children need to be out of the main carrying routes.

Although the website calls the Chequers a family friendly pub, when we visited today with my 3 year old grandson we were seated in a little back room and informed that children were not allowed in the main restaurant. I would add that my grandson is always extremely well behaved. I understand that they welcome dogs so perhaps he would have been better under the table. Needless to say we will not be returning.

I sat out in the back garden which was very comfortable. Thank you for your hospitality!

Came here for a birthday lunch and have to say I couldn’t fault it. I looked up their web site which is informative and reserved over the phone with no problem. Everything was clean and welcoming, the staff very attentive and polite. The food was exactly what we ordered and tasted delicious. If there is anything to criticise it is pricey but for good food I don’t think it will mater so much. The other thing is the menu is vast but very little in the pudding department. Will defo come back here a lovely meal.

We stopped off at this pretty thatched pub on the way back home from London and were greeted by a friendly team. The food was home cooked, tasted great and the portions were quite large. There was a good atmosphere and the pub was very clean and tidy had a very welcoming and cosy feel. A traditional pub offering brilliant food and great service.

We Visited The Chequers Weston on The Green today. Had The Carvery, the selection of roast meats are the best, you have a choice of Gammon, Roast Lamb, Roast Beef, Roast Pork,& Turkey. They are all cooked beautifully. Large home made Yorkshire Pudding plus lots of vegetables, & the best Roast potatoes ever. Crisp & golden outside soft & fluffy inside. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff are so efficient, Debbie & Andy are really lovely people. We would definitely recommend The Chequers, & recommend booking as it gets extremely busy.

Came here for friend's 85th birthday lunch - she used to come here years ago, then new managers took over, the food wasn't as good, so she stopped coming here. Now new (not that new anymore we found out) managers are in place, bringing an excellent menu and dishes from all their previous experience, and it was great to find that the food was once again definitely worth coming here for! We had steak & pride pie and chili pie, both were great. Staff were lovely and the atmosphere was great as well. Would definitely recommend - also to book as it gets busy (and with good reason!)

We were in the middle of a 3 and half hour drive home to Lyme Regis and were looking for a Toby Carvery (cheap and cheerful). We found this was a couple of minutes away so decided to pop in. £16 for the carvery if memory serves me and worth every penny. I think this is possibly the best carvery we have ever had. I even went for meat choices I wouldn't normally go for because they just looked so good. The veg which can be a let down in a carvery was fantastic, cooked perfectly and very tasty. We may well make this part of our journey when visiting family from now on.

Went for lunch with my Daughter - not at all busy, waiting staff very attentive and pleasant, however we ordered a medium cooked steak which arrived “Rare”. We sent it back as it was Raw inside, a second (much smaller) steak arrived, cooked just as the first, I pointed this out to the Proprietor, who was most defensive!!! I said that whilst it wasn’t how my Daughter asked for it to be cooked, we wouldn’t wait for another, and she would eat what she could of it - I was advised that it was cooked “medium Rare” by the proprietor, which was not what we ordered, and the steak was taken away to show the Chef and failed to re-appear. Surely if a steak comes back as undercooked, you would ensure the replacement was better???A most disappointing lunch and attitude, my daughter had half a meal and a reduced bill not ideal!!! Will not be returning.

This is my 3rd time coming here..today I went here with my mum. I ordered the beer battered cod. The batter was cooked to perfection, soft and crispy. Fish was delicious. My mum originally asked the young waitress with glasses, if she could kindly have a 'small portion ' of chilli con canae (due to my mum having surgery she can only eat small portions) .... the waitress was really rude and just snapped back saying 'no'! How can you say no when one the waitress didn't even ask the chef if this was possible or not and secondly, she isnt the chef! Surely doing a small portion for someone cannot be that difficult? My mum therefore had to order prawn salad which unfortunately she did not want nor enjoy!!!This is my 3rd time coming here. Twice I've really enjoyed the food and enjoyed the food today. However, the service was extremely slow and very poor. Was not offered desserts or other drinks. Bare in mind the pub was quite empty. There is one women who I think maybe the owner who just stands, stares and walks around doing nothing! The staff are not very friendly nor welcoming and lack personality which really lets the atmosphere of the pub down which is real shame.Dont think i ll be returning or recommending again unless they improve their service and get better staff with more of a bubbly personality which might actually attract more customers..
