Went for breakfast as non residents. Quality of food was excellent, staff were friendly and environment was very pleasant. If I had one criticism it would be the coffee, it tasted fine but was lukewarm and my flat white was more akin to a latte.

Sunday roast was amazing! Help yourself carvery and we opted for the 2 course meals for a very good price. Great with our young child who is coeliac, it’s very difficult eating out and finding a place that does a good selection of children’s GF foods. We had the food preparation explained to us so we knew she would be ok. Again can’t highly recommend enough, we will definitely be back! We have never had a bad experience here!

Had a meal there this lunchtime. Staff are friendly and helpful, my colleagues had the carvery which they enjoyed, the portions were a really good size. I had the vegan option which was roasted vegetable risotto. It was tasty but tiny! I could have eaten it twice. Maybe more vegan options would be good and larger portions please

Old world charm and hospitality. Very close to the cathedral. Parking could be tricky as in any city centre, do your research beforehand and you'll be OK. If you're tall like me them be prepared to lower your head when walking around the corridors, but in the bedroom we had there's plenty of ceiling height. Lovey meal was had in the restaurant- booking advised as soon as you arrive of beforehand. Top notch breakfast. All in all would recommend for somewhere a little different.

We have been coming to the chapter house now for 5 Years we normaly bring our friends from surrey when visiting to I normaly always have the chicken curry which is really nice but on couple of occasions in the past iv always had the curry in a white deep bowl with the rice around the edge like a dinner plate down but the last couple of visits iv had the curry in two small bowls and the salad on a slate board im thinking do I mix them together on the slate board or so I did it was quite fiddley !my husband and our friends had the steaks very happy ! Also we used to bring our very small dog with us and eat in the tabled area nr the bar ... we lost our dog last December and still came for food when I booked the table for last evening I did not say about bringing our new little dog of 10 months we came in and waited at the bar for our table my husband was holding the dog she was no problem the girl who showed to our table then said oh can you come to another table nr the bar seating area ok no problem when paying the bill was asked just to say when booking next to add a note saying bring our dog with us she was so quiet 🤫.. other people whom were eating said how well behaved she was just went to sleep ... we will be returning again !

Disappointing ! Our 70z & 10oz fillet steaks were huge and cooked to absolute perfection.....but utterly ruined by the insanely hot peppercorn sauce ! We always have peppercorn sauce on our steaks and have never known one so hot that my husband, who really loves hot spicy food, had tears running down his face ! We couldnt taste the lovely steaks at all because our mouths were just on fire , which was such a shame . (l did mention to the waitress how dreadfully hot the peppercorn sauce was - she just said "oh but the steaks were ok, thats good" !!) We went especially for the steaks and they were worth every penny but sadly we didnt enjoy a single mouthful of them . And given that the whole meal felt rushed and the starters were mediocre , we wouldnt return or recommend Chapter House .

Despite the excellent reviews in TripAdvisor, the hotel’s and its driver’s recommendation, this restaurant was a letdown. I have never seen a filet that thin before. It wasn’t bad, in fact it was pretty good, well cooked, too, but not top notch. It was also a bit small for a 10 ounce filet and was overpriced for the size and quality at 35 or 36 pounds. I would probably buy the cod or the chicken the next time, if I returned. They brought french fries, instead of salad and gave our dinner mate the salad we ordered, instead of the fries he did order. They also brought him a ribeye instead of the 10 ounce filet that we also ordered. The starter – mushrooms on sourdough bread was interesting and pretty good. We ordered onion rings that were not very good. The salad was acceptable, but nothing special. The french fries they delivered were not very good, but they weren’t bad. The service was very friendly and they took 30% off our bill to make up for the miscues. What we liked most was the atmosphere. It was very relaxed. There was no loud music to fight over to hear our conversations. And we had very nice ones. Our new friend, who we met at the hotel and began chatting in the hotel van, carried over to the meal. The bottom line is that this restaurant suffered from inflated expectations. We expected an excellent meal and we received an adequate meal. If you set your expectations appropriately, you may not be as disappointed as we were. I should say that our dinner mate seemed to have a much higher opinion of the meal than we did. His opinion was more in line with almost everyone else. In this case, our views are the outliers.

As soon as we entered the restaurant, we could feel its ambience. It felt very comfortable but not pretentious. The staff were immediately welcoming and helpful. There are some interesting African meals on the menu but we were there for steaks. We weren't disappointed. They were cooked superbly and the accompaniments were excellent. We had the wonderful peppercorn sauce and the incredible garlic butter. If we wanted larger steaks, it was possible to order an individual cut. We saw our waitress lugging what looked like half a cow to one table. it was one of the best meals we have ever had. it was without doubt the best steak meal. We stayed here for 2 nights and it was an enjoyable stay. The Chapter House was built over 800 years ago, and as such it has its little quirks. The stairs and flooring are uneven, worn, and creaky, and the corridors are narrow and plenty of - but that is part of its wonderful charm, and I'm glad they haven't modernised it or tried to correct its "issues". It is located conveniently amongst everything - a short walk across the road and through a gateway leads you straight to the cathedral, and a short walk to the right takes you to the centre with the shops and other historical buildings. And despite being on a main road there was very little noise in the room. The mattresses were ultra soft, and you sank in comfortably. The pillows and duvet were equally soft and comfortable. The room was spacious and the bathroom had a beautifully big bath which made for a welcoming and relaxing soak after a long day exploring the city. We had breakfast on the morning after our first night; both opting for poached eggs, and the eggs were cooked to perfection. It's hard to find the perfect poached egg, but these guys nailed it. The buffet option looked small but substantial - as we didn't eat it from it I can't comment on the quality, but other guests were returning for more, so it must have been good! My only negative about breakfast is that we had to order it the night before and say a time roughly we would be down - as someone who is indecisive I do prefer to decide as I go along, but I can also understand why exactly the kitchen do this. We also had dinner there on our last night. The restaurant was packed all evening, which told me the food was going to be good. And it was. The menu had many South African inspired dishes on it, which all sounded lovely, however, we are those boring kind of people who went with what we know we like (and I regret now not trying some of the other dishes!) Opting for the mushrooms on sourdough, and scotch egg for starters; followed by rump steak, and the beef burger for mains; and topped off with puddings of waffle and caramel sauce, and apple & mixed berry crumble w/ homemade custard. Portion size was very generous, and every bite was utterly delicious - I was sad I couldn't finish my pudding due to be too full up, as it tasted divine! Hats off to the chef! Cons of the hotel: - There is no parking at the hotel, however you can park in the public car park just a couple of minutes walk away. The hotel provides parking passes that cover you for 24 hours. There is a charge of around £11-12 per 24 hours (We paid just over £20 in total for 2 nights iirc). - If you have trouble walking or climbing stairs then this hotel would not be suitable for you, due to the uneven floors and no lift. Besides the two cons which will make it unsuitable for some people, I highly recommend others stay here! It will be our go-to hotel when we visit Salisbury in the future.

We arrived for lunch at 12:20 on a Saturday, without a booking, but were told that they had a table available, but would need it back by 13:30, which suited us. Although this is predominantly a steakhouse there are a few vegetarian options on the menu. We ordered drinks (a pint of birra moretti & a very generous house white wine with soda) and while waiting for those, chose our food. DH had the rump burger & I had the goats cheese salad. The food took a while to arrive, but when it did the burger was huge! Served in a brioche bun, with chips. The goats cheese salad, had small pieces of beetroot and walnut, but the salad was just rocket leaves and the salad dressing was all in one place hidden under the cheese! Once we had finished, we were asked if we wanted dessert, but seeing as we had under 10 minutes before they "needed the table back" we declined. If we were to go again, and it was a very nice lunch, we would book a table!! The bill came to £45 and I liked the option of being able to leave a tip on a credit card, when we came to pay, with options of 10%, 12.5% etc.

Premium rump Burger The chapter house is one of the nicer pubs in Salisbury and has a warm feel, in a 400 year old building with a lot of character When ordering the server said they only can cook their burgers for health and safety reasons well done, this is always a flag for me. It signals either their burger patties are not the freshest or that they have been frozen and hence they would not have a bright red/pink colour if cooked anything less than well done. Also strange given Hixon do serve their burgers medium rare and they are only 100m away so it is not a bylaw, the server did not elaborate. As it was 241 I was not overly bothered for now, if i was paying full price £17.95 I would not be happy. Ratings The burger was good size slightly larger than Hixon by 20g I would guess and did look very tasty. Taste 8 it was charred on the outside, something I like as a bit of a crunch is always satisfying, the meat was a good beef taste lightly seasoned if anything. Texture 6 - a medium grind on the burger, as it was well done it was a little on the chewy side Juiciness 3 - one of the biggest faults burgers have these days is the lack of fat in them. The restaurants use great quality meat but that generally means it is on the lean side of the scale with a fat content below 20-25% that gives a good juicy burger. This burger was probably a 12-15% fat content together with being cooked well and made it very dry. Similar to Hixon, but Hixon cooked their burger better. The Bun 7 was a sesame seed brioche toasted bun not the freshest Toppings 6 Red Jam and blue cheese. I used to be a fan of blue cheese burgers but now I am of the opinion they distract away from the taste of the burger. The red onion jam was similar to Hixon again which is a good addition. My opinion is all burgers should come with salad on the side, lettuce onion, tomato so you can if needed Value 6.5 if full price 9 for 241 Overall 7 if full price 9 if 241 We enjoyed our burgers and they were substantial so came away full up, wine was £23 a bottle not too expensive and can be bought for £10 online so not a bad bottle for the price. Given the deal was 241 the bill for dinner was £47.75 including tip, 2 burgers, and a bottle of red wine. I was happy with the burger and it is one of the top 3 in Salisbury. In my opinion it has the ability to be number one if they cooked the burger medium rare but they don't so for now Hixon remains number one. This Tuesday night deal is worth doing though and is better value, on a non deal night I prefer Hixon for the way they cooked it and also the additional salad topping. The server should have told me there was a £1 charge for sweet potato fries rather than discovering it when paying.

We very much enjoyed our one night stay at this hotel. Really a restaurant with rooms! Lovely comfortable beds, large bathroom. Excellent breakfast and staff are friendly and efficient,

We have always loved the standard of Roast dinners in this restaurant so we booked for Mother’s day. Great communication on the phone when we asked to increase the size of the table. This was the first time we had a carvery but the food was equal to previous visits, if not better. The chef cutting the meat at the Carvery was very friendly and the whole Carvery was exceptional. Plenty of fresh vegetables, delicious gravy and all the condiments available. All the staff were extremely friendly, attentive and professional. We think it’s the best Sunday roast in Salisbury and would highly recommend a visit.

1st point to note is BOOK A TABLE. They were kind enough to get us in with a 30 minute wait. (There was only 2 of us so we were lucky) Food was stunning and the staff were very attentive.

The food is really enjoyable and filling however the service and general care from staff was slightly disappointing. Our table of seven couldn’t help but feel like a burden to the staff. Took around 45 minutes for two starters to arrive and over an hour for our mains to arrive. Had we been checked up on staff during this time it would have been understandable but we felt quite neglected. When offered extra bread for our table we weren’t pre warned that it would be an added charge and would have declined the offer had we known. We were here for over two hours and only checked on once. The food helped the experience as it was above average but the service and care for the staff really brings the rating down. A smile goes a long way and one of them would have been appreciated

In my 61 years this is the first ever Trip Advisor review I have ever done. But it needs to be said that this was the worst hotel I have ever been to! We booked in for 3 nights. When you arrive you have to park on double yellow lines to unload then stand in the middle of the pub awaiting check in. 5 staff but only 1 checking in during busy restaurant service. Unlucky for us someone checked in 5 minutes before us so we were waiting a while but no apologies. I had a lovely member of staff show me the hotel and help with the bags whilst my husband went to park the car. A lovely room (no 16) until someone in another room ran water, the radiator in the hall, the radiator next to the bed and the bathroom radiator started to sing loudly. The bathroom window which we couldn't close joined in with a high pitch whistle, all lasting at least 30 mins each time. We wanted to watch England in the six nations however unlucky for us that was the channel we couldn't get on the tv. There were only 2 other channels we could get!! We mentioned this to Gary the manager and no apology just "no one has told me about this before, I will take a look". True to his word he did and offered to change us to room 7 . We asked to book a table in the restaurant but he could only fit us in at 6.30pm.Unlucky for us we had had an afternoon tea, mid day so that was too early, I suggested just a sharing platter sat at the bar, but he was adamant he couldn't squeeze us in they were fully booked. My husband went down for a small jug of milk at 8 o'clock to find the restaurant had 6 tables full out of about 25!!! The following day we had showers as usual and placed the towels in the bottom of the shower tray ready to be replaced as specified in the gust book. When we arrived back about 4ish the towels were draped over the radiators still damp and the bed half made. One side made the other not!!! How????? Took the towels downstairs to be met with "what do you want me to do about it!!" After I asked for 2 dry towels, dropping the wet towels on the floor and had a rant about the cost of their 4 star hotel but not getting value for money, he offered to look at the unmade bed. "It's obviously an oversight" he said with no apology!!! My husband asked him if he would pay £575 for an oversight, damp towels, singing radiators, broken tvs and lack of apologies when things went wrong. He told my husband to stop shouting. My husband is that loud he is deaf he wasn't shouting!!!! Overall the manager likes running a restaurant but is not bothered one iota about the hotel. It's tired, needs redecorating and needs a receptionist or manager to ensure rooms are upto standard. Was overpriced for the service it offers. Basil Fawlty would feel very at home here.

Excellent food professional and friendly staff. We had the South African starter sharing platter between 3 which was more than enough. Then a mixture of steaks cooked perfectly.

One of our favourites, good staff, good food, great coffee. Service swift. Comfortable, but if you want to eat at 'normal' height you may have a short wait. Parking available very close by.

We turned up without booking at midday on sunday last. Were greeted and found a table. The food was excellent as ever and so thankful for getting a table as the pub was heaving.
