The Castell Y Bwch Inn in Torfaen

Ordered lasagne for my wife and myself, our grandson had a burger waited for a hour (we were the only 3 having food) lasagne was hard and dry, it must have been Saturdays left overs,the chips were old. Disgusting NEVER NEVER AGAIN!!!!

Severn of us went for Afternoon Tea, and it was amazing. The cakes were so light and fluffy, the sandwiches were fresh and tasty, but to top it off the warm scone with jam and clotted cream was incredible. Riley, was so helpful and friendly, and ensured all of us had a fabulous time. We will definitely be back. Thank you

I booked this venue for a 60th birthday celebration for fourteen members of my family. The booking was seamless-Riley the manager did a great job. The pre-order menu was emailed to us-the selection was great and suited all our party. Some of our group had lamb, steak, fish, gammon -all were cooked to perfection. Very enjoyable evening. It was my first visit to the venue -but we will definitely be visiting again. Particularly, in the Summer as the views are incredible. Thank you to all at Castell y Bwch!

We took our parents to the Castell for a mother's day dinner today and wow! What fantastic food and loads of it too, very friendly and polite staff who couldn't do enough for us. I must say since it's under new ownership how this place has been transformed. They offer a great, friendly environment where you're not rushed and pushed out the door. Thank you very much for a really pleasant day, keep it up guys.

Stunning Sunday lunch for mother's day. Fantastic service, landlady is a gem and food was gorgeous! We had options of different meats, the portion size was very generous and we had all the versions on our table and everyone enjoyed. Roasts were fantastic and plenty of mixed veg on offer. Recommended by a friend, booked online seat 3 people for Sunday. Arrived friendly staff, ordered 3 starters quite large portions great first impression, 3 Sunday dinners 2 lamb 1 belly pork, to tell you that the food was fantastic perfect in every way loved it. 2 for desert again excellent presented great size and portions will defiantly recommend and will 100% will rebook great meal and the view from the beer garden is breath taking. Absolute lovely place little diamond in the rough this place

We booked Sunday lunch on the 3rd march. It was absolutely beautiful my husband and I had the beef and my daughter had a child’s beef. Staff were lovely and the young boy was very polite and helpful. Would definitely recommend and we are looking forward to going again probably mid week to try other things on the menu

Had a wonderful Sunday lunch here. Staff were very friendly. Ordered cauliflower cheese and before the waiter even put it on the table, she said she would take it back because she herself wasn’t happy with the quality. Can tell they really care about the food! Lovely portions too, and great beer choices. Will definitely come again.

Have been now many times, and have never been let down, the food, the service and the atmosphere, really can't fault it. The Sunday lunch is superb, but in fairness every meal we've had as a family has always been lovely. This place is definitely worth a visit, highly recommend it

Been here many times for a meal and it has always been a pleasure to eat good food. However , my last visit will be my last visit as the quality of the food was a massive disappointment. We ordered chicken curry and half and half (where can you go wrong with that). What we were served ,when it arrived was a portion of chips which could be best described as what McDonalds would give you,a serving of "Uncle Ben's" microwavable rice and a bowl of cold chicken curry which had to be sent back to be heated up. As for the poppadom that came with the meal, the amount of oil on it would have caused an ecological disaster if throw in the sea, so that was returned uneaten. We did eat the food as best as we could as we were hungry after a long day in work, but suffice to say most of it went back to the kitchen untouched. We registered our complaint on paying the bill ( in full I might add) and at no point was an apology offered for such a poor quality meal or a discount in the price. If this is the standard of food being served here on a daily basis I suggest anyone reading this to look elsewhere. A once pleasant eating experience has now become a chore.

Well where to start, staff where great but that was about it I can't remember having a worse Sunday dinner I'm sorry to say, I'm not usually the type to bother with reviews but felt that it was definitely necessary on this occasion I'm sure that all the food was frozen not fresh roaster's definitely were if your considering a Sunday dinner here I wouldn't the price they charge is on par with El Gordo's, Rock and fountain, Cripple Creek etc and it's just nowhere near the standard definitely wouldn't recommend or return unfortunately.

The food was delicious and very generous portions, pub cosy and clean. The staff all helpful and happy. Really enjoyed our time there and will definitely return.

Went here for a Christmas meal. Starters was nice. When dinner came it was OK, not the best I've had . When the booking was made on the booking form was no coloum for desserts. We were told by staff that we had to choose of the normal menu and not the festive menu as we didn't put them on the order form. When we explained that there was no dessert coloum the manager shouted across to us ' you could have added them anywhere on the form'. Well no actually why would customers think of this. There was coloums for starters mains even how you would like your steak cooked. So really you need to add this onto the form. The manager, as a manager should have actually got up from what she was doing and come over to us to explain and see if she could help in any way. Rather than shout it all over to us. Managerial skills to her customers equal 0. This is not how a manager should treat customers. Very disappointed and won't be returning with an attitude like that

We had the Christmas festive menu! We all really enjoyed it! Starters were fabulous, had a mix of turkey and beef dinners , both lovely plenty of veg and staff very friendly and helpful! If anything we were too full for desserts but we did squeeze them in! Really enjoyed the food and night !

Myself and 3 friends went for Christmas meal and disco event, staff couldn’t do enough for us , one member of our group had dietary issues and they offered alternatives, even found us a different table when we wanted to go and have a dance at the disco , lovely food , lovely atmosphere, we all enjoyed ourselves very much , thank you 🤩

The starter was good but the main course was terrible, the stuffing was black and when I asked what had happened to it she just laughed, the roasties were burnt and the veg was cold. The pigs in blanket had no blankets and the parsnips were tiny and burnt when we ordered on line there was no question for desserts so we assumed we would have to order on the night. We asked for the festive dessert menu and was told they were only for people who ordered 3 courses. My daughter said there was nowhere to put the order on line and the manager shouted across the pub that she could ha e put it anywhere. The manager was very rude and the staff didn't smile all night. We will not be going back there and we certainly would not recomend it to anyone. Very disappointing

I booked a festive meal for a small group of friends here. The booking was an absolute shambles from the very start with me paying for deposit and then when I sent in the menu choices I was asked to pay the deposits again! Going back to the menu choices form.... there was no option to select 2 or 3 courses and no box on the form to advise your desert choice so I stupidly assumed that we would be able to select our desert option on the evening. Starters came. They were fine. Main course came.... stuffing cremated, but when I got through the outer charcoal it was ok. When one of our party asked a waitress what had happened to the stuffing, she shrugged, embarrassed, giggled and walked away. The veg on the separate veg dish was cold and the roasties were chewy. After we had finished our main course, we sat there for some time before realising that we hadn't ordered desert so we asked for a desert menu. It was at this point that the person who we were told later was the manager uttered under her breath that we couldn't have the festive deserts as we had only ordered 2 courses. When the waitress came back over to take our desert choices, I asked if we could have the festive deserts and was told that we were not able to have festive deserts as we had only ordered 2 courses. I went on to show the waitress the order form and that there was no box for desert choices. The waitress walked over to discuss this with the "manager" who said that we could have used any of the boxes on the form to note our desert choices. It was at this point that the "manager" and our group had a loud disagreement across the pub as she wouldn't get up to come and discuss it at our table. We promptly paid for our meal, and we will definately not be returning or recommending this pub while it is under the current management. The manager is rude and unhelpful, the waitresses looked utterly miserable and we didn't witness a smile, a please or a thank you from any of them all evening. Very, very disappointing and our Christmas meal has been ruined for 2023.

Easily the worst dining out experience ever encountered. Table booked for 5pm for 15 people. Ordered food just after 5.40pm first meal arrived at 6.50pm last meal arrived at 8.10pm!!!! We only ordered mains no starters. First meals out were really nice but they progressively worse and the last ones out were burnt and inedible. Three meals were completely wrong on arrival. One person ordered fish but got fish cakes when questioned were told " well we didn't have fish so the chef did that instead" no consultantion just a different meal. This could have been done as three other meals had been changed due to them not having any left ( understandable with the current UK delivery problems so I'm not complaining about them not having something ).5 mixed grills no black pudding but not told this until it arrived out on the table two hours later. We Cancelled the side orders in the end as they hadn't come out an hour after those main courses had been out. Kids pizza came out 50 mins into the courses arrivals and when it arrived it was a Chicago town frozen pizza so could have easily come out at the beginning. To be fair the front of house staff worked hard and were very apologetic the whole way thru but things were very heated towards the end which is completely understandable after main meals were still arriving over 3 hours of us being there. The bill was very heavily discounted at the end but that's not enough to anywhere near make up for the awful experience and definitely isn't enough to encourage us to return. Knowbody wants to see a business fail but this one is doomed unless some serious changes are made immediately.

Ordered a Sunday dinner from here, came really fast and was absolutely loads of food, only ordered an adults beef dinner and a child’s chicken dinner and could of fed 4! Beef was really tender, and the gravy was AMAZING!!

So, I came to the restaurant with a friend and not sure that any type of review could justify the horrors that I was subject to on this day. This restaurant is run by delinquents. From a horridious bartender creating deals on her own accord to her threatening to spit in my shots i’m absolutely horrified. The chef decided to go home at 7:30PM over 3 hours before the restaurant closed, which rendered us without food. The location couldn’t be worse, if it wasn’t for the picturesque countryside I don’t think I’d ever of ventured to this desolate establishment. The staff were worse than WORSE and overall may of been one of the worst restaurants that I’ve ever been to. To the parents of children, do not under any circumstances take your children to an establishment like this as you will leave disappointed and mortified. If only there was a way to review a restraint negatively. Stay safe before travelling to such a horrific restaurant. Disappointed, but not suprised.

Went for Sunday lunch family of 6 4 adults 2 children , 2 beef dinner and 4 chicken , chicken was dry and very much over cooked ,the beef was hard to cut very chewy and very dry , carrots was rock hard ,stuffing not taste and has black burnt marks on , peas very watery , she gave us our food and bottoms of plates was Dirty old gravy not washed up , knife was dirty , no mint sauce with dinner , dinner looked and tasted like a microwave dinner , floor still has old chips on not clean at all , waited at bar for ages to get seen to , animal poo all over grass will never go again …..

We visited today for the very first time...... WOW!!!What a stunning pub in a stunning location. Beautiful views across the valley with the mountains behind. Lovely beer garden with loads of space. We were greeted by the owners who were happy to say hi and take a little time to tell us about their pub. We had food which was cooked beautifully and presented beautifully too.Great menu and reasonably priced. Can't wait to return.

I have visited this place twice within the last few weeks. The first occasion I was greeted by a rude and arrogant male behind the bar, it must be under new ownership as I didn’t recognise him. I think I was putting him out by asking for a drink. Called in again this afternoon on a warm day and the lack of people tells you a lot. The decking area tables had plates and glasses on each one with flies chewing on some rotten chicken which looked like it had been festering for hours in the sun. The flooring of the decking was covered in smashed glass. When I went to the bar the blonde haired female was on her phone and wasn’t even interested that I was there. She eventually decided to serve me, didn’t say a word. Whilst I was being served the pub phone rang and she answered and was rude as hell to the person who had rung. She quickly got my drinks and the only time she spoke was to tell me how much my drinks were, then she was straight back to her phone. Perhaps she should spend more time taking in the stinking plates and glasses that were all over the tables outside and sweep up the broken glass before someone has an accident. I will not be returning for a long time as I prefer to spend my money where I am welcome. It’s turned in to an absolute pigsty of a place. Avoid it

Not in a good way. We visited for a special meal, table booked, apparent safety precautions. From start to finish, our experience made Fawlty Towers look like Claridges. . ….No hand sanitizer, no diet drinks, no service, no hope. The quality of food is awful, there are very few choices as they don’t have the basics, the food is reheated from chilled and not that well re heated. The service is rude arrogant and lacking any care. Bottom line, avoid at all costs.

Came here for Sunday dinner today after not being here since before COVID. Service was shocking, if it wasn’t for Tasha, who was trying to answer phones, seat customers, carry out table service it would of been even more shocking. She’s the only one I actually seen doing anything. On top of having 2 chickens flapping around inside and her trying to shout for help, and no one helped her. I really felt sorry for her. Waited 25 mins for a drink. But again, I couldn’t blame her, as she was rushed off her feet. Sunday lunch, was lovely. And was loads of it. Couldn’t fault it at all. I hope Tasha gets the praise she needs as if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t of recommended

Visited the Castell Y Bwch for a family meal 6 adults and 1 child. Really good service from the staff who were clearly trying their best with table service and Covid-19 restrictions. Food was a resonsable price, tasty and the portion sizes were good. Would have given an excellent but my daughers burger was seriously over done, but changed quicly with apoligies from the staff and no coffees were available as the coffee machine had been cleaned early.

Table booked for 1. Ordered food and over an hour later after 2 other tables came, ordered and finished we asked where our order was. Oh I forgot it, I will order it now. Attitude not good. Burger was rubbery and tasteless and the frozen chips were like the small rubbish from the bottom of the bag. Our compensation for the mess they made was free drinks but all we had was iced tap water and that's free. Have been there several times and has always been good but today was a real disappointment.

I called to this pub on two occasions recently, Firstly with my son on a random visit, where we had a very friendly welcome. We both ate and enjoyed the visit. On the second visit I took my wife to share the experience. This visit was totally different to the previous visit, It was Friday Night, obviously the night in Cwmbran for partying. We had another lovely welcome from the staff, then directed to the outside area. We preferred to sit outside to enjoy the warm evening, many others had the same idea with plenty of seats with umbrellas for shade. We completed the track and trace protocol and ordered our drinks at the table. Seeing the meals coming to various visitors made me feel peckish. My wife was hooked by the Prawn cocktail, so we ordered a large burger meal " The Big One " Absolutely beautiful. Together with watching the young people gathering for a late night somewhere, the friendly tireless staff serving the tables and the meal itself. We loved it and will certainly revisit as soon as we can.

Pre Booked a family Sunday lunch for my mums 84th birthday (her 1st time out in months) 28th June on arrival we stood at the bar for over 5 minutes waiting, the place was deserted and staff were busy chatting in the other bar to then be told I’m sorry we’ve run out of food, we’ve been extremely busy and all we have left are some scraps !!!! Appalling customer service totally disgusted! The disappointment on my mums face was heartbreaking… surely you cater for pre booked meals knowing the amount of food you need to prepare!!!

Took the family up for fathers day asked if we could have an outside table with spaces for a wheelchair and a pram and they sat us undercover under pergola all our needs met ( even a higher table so wheelchair could fit underneath :) dinner was stunning as always!! The food was well cooked, and large portions, if anything too big. Downside not covid safe, staff not wearing masks. A little disorganised, there were only a few of us there however we were disappointed with the service we received. Maybe staff were new to the job, didn't know what they were supposed to do.

We arrived for a family lunch, having booked a table outside.Upon arrival we were told to find a table and take a seat (so far so good). 15 minutes later, our waitress arrived to take our drinks order. As she arrived, I asked the most simple of questions "What do you have on draft" - to this she responded "I don't know." with a Vicky Pollard type attitude/eye roll. To this I simply said, right - in that case surprise my with a pint of Lager of some sort.... This didn't turn up for 40 minutes. After chasing twice, I simply walked to the bar and offered to collect it myself to save them a journey. I would also like to highlight the fact that not a single staff member was wearing a mask.... My family then arrived and again placed another drinks order - the waitress again had no knowledge of what they sold, and simply shrugged and walked away having told us to go in and order if we want to know what there is.The staff member behind the bar, whom I can only assume was some sort of supervisor had the worst attitude I have ever experienced. I would recommend all future guests avoid asking for a receipt, you will be met with vitriol.Long story short, we decided not to order our food and instead simply walked away. We saw the quality of the sunday lunch being served, and it looked like something you would find in the microwave section of your local supermarket.In summary: Avoid at all costs.

Rude ignorant staff who do not tend to your requirements they just make you feel a pest as you need to continually ask for everything. Food order all wrong, items missing etc no apology. 1 meal came so late that everyone else had finished theirs.Not Covid safe no track and trace. Food mediocre pub grub, pity as the setting is lovely just ruined by those who attempt to run it.

will bot be returning absolutely shocking customer service! to be called rude when we asked for a receipt! no cutlery given with our starters, garlic mushroooms ordered we had one mushroom in it! main meals then given 5 mins after given out starters so went cold.... got completly ignored when we complained and then got completly blanked for the rest of the evening. not covud safe staff had no masks and even sat at our table. absolutely awful experience worst place i have ever been!

Booked a meal by phone for 1.30pm today. Arrived at 1.15pm. Woman said we had to sit on a bench table. I am disabled and could not get my legs over the bench seat. Waited and waited for woman to come back so my daughter found an old rickety metal chair which was very unclean and unsafe but put a cardigan over it. We waited and waited but no one came to serve us so my daughters went inside to order drinks and food. Could only pay by bank transfer or cash.Got our drinks and sat at table in the baking sun. All umbrellas were broken so no shade.After 2 hours the woman came out and said she would have to give us a refund.OMG what a sh*storm.Never again. No service, no idea how to run a pub. What a nightmare.

No condiments on the table, no crackling with the pork, no apple sauce. Really disappointing. More importantly, none of the staff wore masks, and customers weren’t being asked to wear masks or register their visit for track and trace. The hand sanitiser was empty. The staff are lovely and it’s sad to leave a bad review but they really need to improve.

Only 2 other people in there, service was slow considering there seemed to be more staff than customers. Someone came to take our order but had to keep going to check if they had it, 3 things we tried to order were not available. Food was ok at most, expected better. My biggest complaint though is the droning so called music that is on in the background, it was bloody awful, I appreciate you can't please everyone but I can't imagine that pleasing anyone, maybe some 90yr old farmer from somewhere in the outer hebrides.

I used to love going here, so visited yesterday 22/05/21 and was truly disappointed. At first I could understand the longer wait as only 2 staff were working but then several more staff arrived and stood around not doing much. We waited over an hour for our starters which were nachos and couldn't eat them due to the cheese that were put on them and the sauce (salsa) that they were dressed in. Eventually our mains came and my burger was covered in grease, and came with burger sauce which was not stated. My partner waited over 10 mins for her main which when it come she took 2 mouthfuls and couldn't eat no more. The staff noticed we didn't eat much of the food but didn't query this or ask how was the food. Very disappointed as used to go here often, don't think I will be returning, their personal friends were, which were going behind the bar and in the kitchen were given a good service but us normal customers did not receive the same treatment.

I am very disappointed with their service. I ordered 2 adult beef dinners & a side order of cauliflower cheese to be delivered today. I was quoted 4 different prices which varied from £27.90 to £54.75 It arrived in time for tea with no cauliflower cheese. I text & phoned the pub to complain & they said someone would bring the missing side order straight away. After waiting a few hours & nothing I phoned again & was told that someone had come back with the cauliflower cheese & they said no one answered, but I was in all day so don’t think that’s true. So they again promised to deliver ANOTHER cauliflower cheese with a promise of 2 complimentary desserts and guess what . . . . , no delivery. This is not the way to run a business, false promises , very disappointing!

I thought it would be a nice gesture on my part to send two meals to friends who where without a kitchen as it was being refurbished during lockdown. I phoned the order through the day before and was quoted a price for the meal. Which I paid within the hour of order by bank transfer. The next evening I chased up the order as it was arranged to be delivered by 17:00. on the Sunday. It was 17:15 when I phoned. The food arrived at 17:35, was stone cold and one of the mains had been substituted for a cheaper meal. Upon checking the menu. It seems I had been quoted the wrong price initially. So my bank transfer would not cover the cost of the entire meal. Why didn't a member of staff contact me as they had my phone number and paying the amended amount wouldn't have been a problem. With 24hrs between myself placing the order and it being delivered, I think that is ample time to correct any errors made by your staff. I am totally disappointed by the unprofessionally executed home delivery service of this establishment. I will not be ordering anything again. Which is a shame, as I was told after blastng it in the microwave it was really tasty.

Beautiful food, full of flavour! Very large portions. Had a complication with the delivery (not the resaraunts fault) and when it was brought to the attention they were quick and eager to resolve the issue! Fantastic customer service. Will definitely be ordering again.

We've rediscovered this great pub again recently and been back for Sunday lunch today. We had a lovely time, the staff were really patient and relaxed, food was great, good value and the pub was so Christmassy and cosy, big log fire too, and we could see they were were following the Covid safe rules. What more could you want? Can't wait to come back! The beer garden will be lovely in summer too with views over the countryside

After having such a good takeaway from the Castell during lockdown, we were glad to discover they also did a Sunday dinner but unfortunately, we couldn't have had a more different experience.We preordered a lamb dinner for delivery but was then later told that lamb wasn't available so opted for chicken along with chicken goujons and an apple crumble.The delivery time was communicated clearly and the driver turned up within the time frame. The chicken goujons were lovely. They were cooked well and tasted fresh but unfortunately, the apple crumble we were expecting was replaced with apple pie. When we looked at their Facebook page, it was made clear that you could have either or but we were under the impression that the apple pie was an option if the crumble had run out and it wasn't clearly communicated that they randomly choose which one you have rather allocate them on a first come, first served basis.Despite this though, the apple pie was nice enough, I just would have picked a different dessert if I'd known about the way they operate it.The roast dinner, unfortunately, was the worst part of the meal.The chicken breast was overcooked, it was tough and dry and not easy to cut at all. The roast potatoes were hard and the mash wasn't nice at all, almost as if it was made from instant. The parsnips were soft and we couldn't taste any of the glazed honey, the gravy was very watery, the cabbage was hard, the Yorkshire pudding was soggy and the stuffing had no taste to it at all.Otherwise though, the veg was either soggy and boiled to death.Honestly, this meal was so different to the others we've previously had from this place that we think they may have a different chef in to do the dinners. It definitely seems so since we've had such lovely pub food from them before.

Come for Sunday lunch today, service and food was amazing!! Special thanks to our waitress Paula for making the experience very enjoyable! Great food, great service extremely good value for money!! See you all soon

Been here to eat before and was lovely. Ordered take away tonight and it was awful I am so disappointed. Chips were not cooked, pizza was dry and dessert come covered in cream with an extra pot of cream. Wont be ordering again sorry
