Outstanding yet value again I had mince with leak dumpling which was very tasty and lots of it. I would love to know how they seasoned the mince so well : the best i have had ! The veg was fresh, hot and tasty.my mother had braised steak. Just as good ! Even The Carriage isn't perfect. On this occasion the boiled potatoes were slightly overcooked bit still fine The pavlova's at £3 were a bargain

I visited today and enjoyed pork loin with onions, veg, yorkshires and apple sauce. There was plenty to eat for a big fella like me. The quality was extremely high, all very tasty and hot.To be honest it was faultless. For dessert I had homemade frangipan (unsure of the spelling) with cream. Delicious. Together with a glass of coke the total bill came to about £9.50. Service is always polite, pleasant and u intrusive.

So first impressions matter. When you visit this place, imagine you’re visiting your aunties home for tea? I won’t lie, you’ll notice the dated carpet and old wooden dining chairs, the old train pictures and dated light fittings... but you will also notice this place is spotlessly clean and well kept. The lady who served us was lovely, very warm and welcoming. This gave us the feeling that we were a guest in someone’s home - unlike other restaurants where we’ve felt like we’re on a conveyor belt being processed! The menu had plenty of options, starters at £3, mains £6.50 and desserts £3. It’s traditional home dinners, mince and dumplings, beef dinners, chicken pies etc. And desserts are traditional: steamed puddings, cheese cakes, jam sponges etc. We loved our meals, absolutely spot on! Drinks were cheap, service was excellent and price was a give away! We were absolutely stuffed from the generous portions of good food and vegetables. This place is clean, easily accessible and parking available outside. I can’t fault this place and we’re looking forward to visiting again soon. Well done guys and keep up the good work.

Have visited many times with friends and the food overall is really good value. Homemade chips are lovely and the food is pretty consistent. My husband ordered sirloin steak which was very poor and one time ordered pork which was also not so good but everything else we've had has been excellent. The puddings are very cheap £3 and are lovely.

The last of the countless visits we have enjoyed to The Carriage was three days ago for lunch on New Year's Eve. As always, it was excellent. The friendly, efficient staff create a happy atmosphere, provide really delicious traditional English cooking with a good choice of menu, serve it on properly laid tables, cater for all ages and maintain a consistently high standard, attracting customers from far and near and they offer unbeatable value. Only went here because the in-laws love it...but been a good few times now and it is just fantastic. Jess the "waitress" is so friendly and accommodating, you would never get that in a 5star place, you can swap and change how you like it. They have their regulars, and that makes the atmosphere... BUT the food is fabulous, provided by Jess's mum, who is a fantastic cook...not a chef just a bloody good common a garden cook..which is far better in my view! £8.50 for a sirloin steak these days is just about impossible but that's what it costs...and no extra for the most fantastic peppercorn sauce I have tasted in years.. Well done ladies, you deserve all good reviews and every best wishes. If you are in the area... 10 mile radius... This is worth a visit...promise

After receiving some good news we booked up at short notice. Five hungry people turned up not knowing what to expect. 5 starters ranging from the classic prawn cocktail to black pudding and mustard. Main course of steak, belly pork, chicken fillets with sweet chilli and a kids portion of chicken bits with bbq sauce. All served with hand cut chips and tourines of fresh vegetables. Only 2 deserts where ordered due to being full. Icecream sundaes where fine. Drink was limited but cheap enough and atmosphere ok. Well worth the money.

Been here on a number of occasions for fairly simple reasons: it's local, reasonably priced and proper home cooking unlike nearby Wetherspoons which serves processed tasteless lukewarm pap (someone has to say it ).The food at the Carriage is consistently of a high standard, tasty and fairly quick service and I love the mashed turnip served with roasts. If I had to give negatives they would be that the cod on a Friday is fairly small despite having the best crispy batter I have eaten, the boiled potatoes need plenty of salt but the mash is lovely. However, the homemade mint sauce is gorgeous. Lovely homemade chips !If you are not off put by the clientele being mostly elderly (yet very pleasant people) then go here for lunch

Don't be put off by the looks of this place as it has the appearance more of a cafe than a Restaurant. However, if you want traditional home-cooked meat and 2 veg style food and are in the area then this is the place to be. The prices are incredibly reasonable (£5.50 for most main meals and £8 for sirloin steak) and there is plenty of food for your money too. We had the Sirloin steak and it came to the table cooked exactly to order (medium rare) which is sometimes hard to get. There was plenty of vegetables to go round and these were also cooked just as they should be, neither under or overcooked.Would we visit again (as this is the acid test for me)? Yes. An all round pleasant evening.

I totally disagree with the previous reviewees....The Carriage is a lovely little restaurant run by a professional, warm, hardworking, and genuine family. The food is homecooked and hearty...just what you want from a local country restaurant. There is always a smile waiting for all the customers and nothing is too much trouble. I have been going to the carriage for a long time and have never been disappointed. The Carriage provides a great experience in a cosy environment - go on give it a try! on a separate note....I seem to recognise the previous reviewee (Yankee 7799) as managers of another eating establishment - maybe they have an ulterior motive for posting what they did????????????

We’re not vegans, merely vegetarians! However it was a lovely surprise to stumble across this stall whilst on a walk around Durham. Whilst not hungry at the time, we bought some pastries and a scotch egg for later, purely because it was nice to see a trader specialising in meat free (or in this case vegan) products and not someone making a token effort. All of of our food tasted awesome and we’ll definitely make a point of visiting here to try something else the next time we are in Durham.

We had the 6 course tasting menu plus supplementary course - it was an absolute delight. The snacks to start with were gorgeous- especially the focaccia, the turkey stuffing was delicious, the smoked salmon was outstanding, the halibut was my absolute favourite especially the sauce, the porchetta was gorgeous and the desserts were unusual but yummy. The textures and tastes work together to produce a very special dining experience.
