The Canny Goat in Newcastle upon Tyne

Really loved this place (: the people working here are more than friendly and inviting and answered all my questions about their coffee. It’s a small space but really clean, food hygiene rating is 5 which is great. Enjoyed their coffee, really rounded (their house blend) and a use la marzocco machine so the espresso is amazing. Latte art 10/10 too!

Delicious sandwiches and coffee, and a warm welcome!

Stands out for some really good coffee, which is no mean feat in a coffee blessed with very good independent coffee shops. Keeps it simple with tasty toasties and cake!

Odd one. The lights were too white and it was too noisy for its size. The weirdest thing tho, we wanted a sandwich and they told us they had run out, but then we saw a fresh batch of sandwiches. When we asked if we could have one of those, they told us they were for the day after. Surely you’d want to sell a sandwich when the demand is certain. Coffee was great quality.

I would probably say the best coffee shop in Newcastle, I’ve been studying in Newcastle for three years now so been most coffee shops, as I like to do my uni work in coffee shops, great coffee, staff are always super friendly, nice atmosphere to work or have a coffee with a friend.

Very nice small café with super tasty sandwiches. We were able to stick around here for a few hours before boarding our ferry back to Amsterdam. The service is superb. Can recommend this place.

We discovered the canny goat a few months ago and love it. Best coffee in Newcastle and friendly and welcoming staff and atmosphere. Toasties are really nice and the cakes are delicious. Highly recommend a visit if you're in the city centre, worth the short walk from the Gate.

The Canny Goat makes our weekly Saturday visit from the countryside to Newcastle so much easier. It is my breathing space out of the bustle of the city centre. The warm welcome and chat from the enthusiastic staff is a privilege to be around. Their friendliness compliments the perfect breakfast tea, Cluck Norris toastie and deliciously flavoured cake. Thank you for making a "Saturday Family" mum look forward to a Saturday!

What a lovely little spot 🙌 Dropped in for an iced coffee at the weekend, lovely friendly staff and a great coffee to boot. I've never been asked if I wanted a milk, dark or white chocolate before so the choice was great. Lovely bit of Aircon on a hot day as well

Such a cute hidden gem! A little on the pricier side, but well worth it for the cheese toasties. We loved going on a cute date here, the cafe is very comfy and has a nice vibe to it.

As an Australian traveling around the UK, I struggled to find a great coffee until I came across The Canny Goat! Easily the best coffee I've had outside Australia!

Stopped in by chance while waiting for a viewing on a nearby property. Had to go in from the name alone - who doesn't like goats, so glad we did. Had a good laugh about our experiences with goats, had a quick drink and sit down before heading off. Service was top notch, atmosphere was perfect, light and fresh interior and most importantly, drinks were amazing - will be back.

First time here as a visitor to Newcastle. Got a flat white to takeaway. I asked about espresso options which were naturally processed, I felt a bit like an inconvenience as they answered a bit brisk and unwelcoming. I heard them chatting about me as I left. Fairly decent flat white, just a shame about the service.

Blink and you’ll miss it but once you know it’s there you won’t let walk by without popping in or wanting to! Cute, cosy space with excellent decor - minimal, clean and creative with local art and loads of lovely visuals. The prices are slightly higher for a tea/coffee (for me :))but worth it for the calm space. Great place to get done work done or read a book! Stay canny ✨✨✨

We canny believe what a wee gem this is. Tucked away on the snickleways of Newcastle. The coffee was mellow but tasty, the staff were super friendly. There were charging ports all over the cafe so it was a handy place to refuel our phones too. The food looked fresh and delicious- we will definitely be back to try the food.

Went here on a whim to work whilst on a business trip. Genuinely, contemplating coming back to visit here again. Just a wholesome friendly pace with a good atmosphere and nice music.

I've been meaning to visit The Canny Goat for a good while now and finally managed to drop by for coffee and a traybake yesterday. What a lovely venue! The coffee was excellent, as was the moreish traybake. The staff were very welcoming and are clearly passionate about the business. I'll definitely be back and will also be spreading the word to others.

Beautiful coffee, and the vegan brownie was lovely as well. Will definitely make it a regular coffee shop when we visit Newcastle.

Lovely little coffee shop. Friendly staff, good atmosphere and a great choice of coffee and tea. My son had the vegan apple and cinnamon cake and said it was amazing. No extra charge for non dairy milk (as it should be) which is so rare these days. Much appreciated. Keep up the great work. Oh, they have great merchandise too!

Easily the best coffee shop in Newcastle. The warmest atmosphere I’ve ever experienced, the staff are really friendly and the coffee is top-tier. Newcastle is hardly short of coffee shops but discovering this place is like finding a diamond amongst hundreds of pebbles. Most of us are guilty of playing it safe and sticking with the chains, and therefore limit ourselves and miss out on the best places, despite us all knowing that the independents always have been and always will be superior. The next time you’re heading to Costa or Starbucks, make a swift pivot to here instead, you will not look back. Whether it’s to be productive, catch-up with family / friends, or just to unwind, this is the perfect place to stop. As someone with social anxiety (and who has recently conquered agoraphobia), it’s extremely difficult for me to feel comfortable anywhere but this place somehow never fails to make me feel super relaxed - maybe due to the cosiness of the layout / the small amount of tables, but most likely because of how lovely the staff are, they make you feel so much more than just a customer. I’ve only been living in Newcastle for a few weeks, I don’t have any friends / family here but I never feel self-conscious coming here alone which is not like me at all, again testament to just how welcoming and uplifting this place really is. The aptly named Canny Goat really is the G.O.A.T.

I recommend this cafe very much. Staff are welcoming and the service is always spot on. Good for revision and nice chat with friends. Only thing bad is not enough chairs and table :(

You'll find a million chain coffee shops in this part of town, but it doesn't take much work at all to get to this local place, which is at least as good as any of the chains. It's a short walk from the train station or the main tourist area. There's a small area for seating with good access to some charging points for your laptop, including some power points with USB ports, which is great if your phone is dying from the train trip.

Good service, friendly people, and they also have coffee specializing in filter coffee and also an excellent cortado, I recommend it, I think it is the best specialty coffee in Newcastle

Came across this coffee shop purely by chance and what a lovely find. Very friendly helpful staff, importantly the coffee was great- they sell the beans in the shop. Also had a slice of delicious carrot cake. Seating outside as well as in. I will be making sure I walk that way again for a coffee stop

I was recommended this coffee shop by a tour guide in Newcastle and I’m so pleased as I would never have discovered it otherwise! It’s so friendly and the coffee and cakes are incredible. Plenty of choice for vegans too. Well worth a visit!

A fantastic hidden gem and any coffee lover needs to pay a visit. I visited the coffee shop to buy some coffee beans and the staff were so helpful. I was given pointers on which beans would go well with my brewing method and a flavour profile of each bean. They really know their stuff.

Loveliest coffee shop in the centre of town, down a little side street - makes it feel like a little escape from the busy city. Always warm welcome from the staff, love their coffee.

This is such a lovely place for brunch or coffee and cake. They made me one of the best hot chocolate drinks I’ve ever had and just seem really happy to give their customers what they need. I had lemon drizzle cake with the lemon syrup on the side so you can add as little or as much as you like. Simple but very thoughtful. My friend had the GOAT monsieur which was lovely too. Shame I live in London otherwise I’d be a regular.

Magnificent hidden coffee spot. Fond of the quality of coffee they serve. No variety of desserts though, but they mostly serve vegan desserts. The staff are incredibly welcoming and friendly.
