The Camp Fish Bar in St Albans

Been going to this fish and chip shop my whole life and we have missed since it shut from a fire. It’s back and even better than before. Warm and friendly staff and great food

Like a phoenix rising from the flames, the Camp Fish Bar has re-opened (following the fire on Saturday 13th July 2019). Whilst there was no sign of Harry Styles in a dressing grown and holding a chicken (re Gucci advert filmed here in March 2018) there was plenty of customers waiting for their (covid-19 regulations compliant) fix of Fish and Chips. The cod and chips were good. The batter was crisp (no soggy bits); the cod was moist, and the chips were an ample sized portion. A bonus was a free tote bag with the shop’s logo on it. The whole portion was eaten and thoroughly enjoyed! The shop is operating on a one client in the shop basis: either making an order or picking up an order. Once you have placed your order you are given a number, you then need to wait outside until your number is called (it is also displayed on a large indicator as well).

Now if you want teally good fish and chips this is the place to come. Since young i have been coming here as well as others in my area but this one is one of the best. The fish is allways good and the chips remind me of when i was young and at school Unfortunately the chip shop has been closed for a while from a fire that brought it to a standstill. The community are devastated. Its been on social media and local news and it has caused massive upset to the owners and customers. How ever good news has come to light, they will be restoring the chip shop but no date has been set when. Once open i shall eat there agsin as usual and review once more with new photos.

This chip shop is categorically the best chippie I have ever been to! The chips are golden and perfectly cooked, the fish is tasty and flaky in it's batter and the other bits are equally yummy. Not only does it taste fantastic every time, the portions are very generous. It does make me laugh that Harry Styles has stood in our local chippy in a Gucci coat holding a chicken- only in St Albans! They have recently had a fire which has devasted the shop and family- I really hope they are back running soon as they are the best local takeaway I know of.

Quite simply, the best fish and chips you will ever eat. I've never found a better one anywhere else (and I'm practically a connoisseur). The batter is always light and crispy, the chips are cooked to perfection - exactly how you'd expect them to be from a proper chippy. The battered sausages are the best I've found. I've heard that the secret is: replacing the oil every day, no reusing. You know you're going to a good place when they're taking that amount of care over the cooking. There is always a queue trailing out of the door and around the corner, and not because it's a small shop - this is a testament to the top quality food. The service is great too; the families that have run the shop since its opening many years ago are delightful - always kind and friendly. Sadly the last reviewer has little grasp of a gem of a family run business that have been 100% spot on for nearly nine years whilst i’ve been local. The service is amazing given how popular that are - the food is superb. Never mind the negative one or two individuals below, use this place they’re amazing...

Quite how this is so highly rated I don't know. Everytime I've been there it's as if they're cooking every individual chip. You'd think like most chip shops that they might ask a couple of people at a time what they wanted instead of waiting for each individual customer to order, wait to be cooked/wrapped then pay. Then ask the next customer. The queues are always ridiculous and they have no idea. The food is sitting in the warmer. They just cook chips (fairly average ones at that), why does it take so long. Don't waste your time, there's plenty of better chip shops in the area

The chips here are always freshly fried and taste absolutely delicious. The service is friendly and it's rarely too crowded. This is such a brilliant chippy that it was selected for the location of a Gucci photoshoot starring Harry Styles last week. Very impressed all round.

Wow! For starters I was apprehensive that they would take telephone orders, plus it was a Friday evening (at rush hr time when people are finishing work etc etc) and it was for collection ASAP. The lovely lady on the phone treated me like I was their best customer and told me my order would be ready in ten minutes!! Now, I have been there during lunch, early evening and at night and they are ALWAYS bursting with customers! I was amazed that the phone was even answered let alone my order promised to be ready so soon - I even asked for the total amount my order came to (I like to add extra sundries at the very last minute!) and it was all done in no time at all and very efficiently! Massive portions and still hot after a 10 minute walk in freezing weather. HIGHLY RECOMMEND all day long!!

i say used to be as although no real complaints its not as good as it used to be portions are much smaller but still good quality but found a better place

Without question the best in the area. Traditional fish and chip shop, all freshly cooked and piping hot - even after the journey home.

Easily the best fish and chips in St Albans. It's also reasonably priced, with decent portion sizes. Only one issue - they don't take cards.

We went visit our friend and having fish and chips here. We have the best fish and chip ever have! The fish is fresh and very crispy and even my mum like the chip very much and keep ask me to go back to get some.! Recommend!

He estado yendo a este chips durante más de 25 años y no puedo quejarme de este lugar. El pescado y las patatas fritas desde aquí son impresionantes.

Hemos estado comprando pescado y patatas fritas de los Peces Camp Bar regularmente por al menos 10 años. La comida siempre es fresca, caliente y reconfortante. Y todavía tenemos a decepcionar pero dudo que se.

Best fish and chips in St. Albans. Great food, generous portions and good service. Sometimes there is a bit of a queue given its popularity but I wouldn't go anywhere else.

A very good fish and chip place, hence the queues, especially on Fridays. Highly efficient service, good chips, fresh fish. It only lacks sea air and ravenous herring gulls.

On several occasions I have been required to wait for over 20 minutes while other orders have been made up. How about utilising the staff better. Also when I requested a large cod, a small cod was served instead. I will be avoiding the Fish Bar from now on in favour of other fish and chip shops in the area.

We have been getting our fish and chips here for the last 20 years and it is always good! There is sometimes a queue, but always friendly and worth the wait. Proper traditional fish and chips, and always freshly cooked. A great treat for a hungry family when life gets in the way of cooking! We love this place!!

Fabulous fish and chips and friendly service. Wouldn't go anywhere else (except when they shut for half an hour for a big order - please don't do this again to your loyal customers. Get an extra cook in or turn down the order- better than upsetting lots of regular customers).

Hard to get to and tucked away in a less well known part of town. The same suppliers as every other chippie, cod pukka and mushy peas and chips.

I call into this fish n chip shop most Thursday lunchtime for piece of delicious cod! I am happy to wait as I know the fish will be fresh and the batter light as a feather. I can't really comment on the chips as I rarely eat them, but the fish is fantastic and the service both friendly and efficient. I love it!

Our local chippy, a small family run business which consistently gets it spot on. Worth waiting on the Haddock, excellent chips and curry sauce/ mushy peas.Go!!!

I have been buying fish and chips from this shop since I was a little girl (I'm now 63) and it has always been good. Since these lovely people took over it has been even better. As a connoisseur I can honestly say these are the best fish and chips in St Albans. Believe me, I've tried them all.

I can honestly say l think these were the best fish and chips ive ever had and I am 68 years old.Out of this world, wow honestly l am not joking.I had cod and chips and someone on here recommended the curry sauce, which I also bought a pot of.Wow i see what you mean that was fabulous as well much better than others I have tried.I like chip shop curry sauce. I am actually bowled over in shock even at how good it was, and now will travel from my home in Hemel Hempstead especially for these the best fish & chips.You lucky people in St Albans.

I've been here on and off for about ten years and it's the best fish and chips I've had in the UK. It's only ever been beaten by fish and chips I had in Iceland in the harbour where they catch the cod! Perfect batter, good prices, good chips and friendly staff!

The service is fast and efficient and extremely friendly. It is the best fish and chips in St Albans, very good chips and excellent fish. The shop is takeaway only.

Being from what most consider "Up North", I'm a bit particular about my fish n chips. Until I'd found this place I didn't think it was possible to get fish n chips as good as home. Now all they need to do is serve mushroom gravy and batter bits and I'll give it six stars :)

Being lucky enough to live round the corner we have take away from here whenever the kids can talk us into it. Always great. Batter is crisp and the fish firm and perfectly cooked. As its popular the food is always fresh and not warmed up as some places can be. A great choice for an easy tea.

We had a big group - about forty people - and ordered from the Camp Fish Bar. Service was excellent, the food delicious and the prices very reasonable. Would recommend the freshness of the fish, the crispiness of the chips and the fantastic Pukka pies. Great!

We live just round the corner from this chippy - it is tucked away on the corner of Cambridge Road and Sutton Road. It really is worth hunting down - we regularly eat there, the fish and chips are great and the service very friendly.

I had cod & chips to take away, I specially requested extra cooked chips and they were quite crispy just as I like them. The batter on the cod was acceptable but slightly on the mushy side underneath. Pleasant staff in a clean environment.

We live down the road from this shop. We regularly get either chips to go with out steaks or get fish n chips for the kids. Always freshly fried and generous with the portion. Be prepared for a long queue on Fri and Sat nights.

Often get lunch here on a Saturday, Curry sauce and chips is a fave. Always well cooked, and reasonably priced.

and probably one of the best in the south of England. The food is always fresh, fired to perfection. Chips are delicious, the batter is nice and light. If you don't believe me, then go and see the queue out of the door every Friday night. That alone will tell you more than any review can. The reason this place is so popular is because it's so good.

Had fish and chips from here on numerous occasions and it never fails to disappoint. Its usually busy so everything is fresh - the sometimes long queues show what a great place this is. The cod is so fresh and tasty and the batter is light and crispy and not greasy. The chips are also good, standard I would say for a chippy but its the fish that makes this place stand out.

Having lived within a few hundred yards of here for 35 years it's one of the things I now miss most about no longer living in St. Albans. I called in on a recent return visit and found the fish and chips as wonderful as ever. Lovely crispy, non greasy batter and great chips. All good value too. Still run by the same family for all this time, perhaps that's the secret of well prepared food.

This is great fish and chips and I've been to the best fish and chip shop in the UK according to the Guardian. The fish is always fresh, the batter is lovely light and crisp and the chips just as they should be. The family who run it clearly care and are very friendly and keep it very clean. I think it's a bit of a Camp secret and deserves to be more widely appreciated.

First visit to the Camp Fish Bar before going to St Albans FC which is about 5mins away in the car. Very nice Fish and chips freshly cooked white fish with a thin batter, not dark and full of fat, lovely fresh cooked chips. Friendly helpful staff,clean small corner shop, easy to find with a sat nav . I will defentitly return when I'm in the area.

Quite simply the best chip shop in St Albans beautiful chips just right and the most amazing fluffy batter on all the beautifully fried fresh fish. I have never found a chip shop anywhere to beat it. I have lived near the Camp chippy nearly all my life and when I haven't I have returned as often as possible. When we brought out house one consideration was distance from the Camp chippy. Simply the Best!

This has got to be the best chippy in St. Albans. Been using it for years but when we moved we went to the local one in the quadrant. What a mistake ! Went straight back to the camp even though it's a car ride away but would rather travel to get decent fish n chips.
