Godfrey's in St Albans

Godfrey's do good food but are unable to provide some items listed on the menu. There is no Steak and Ale pie again this afternoon, for the 4th time in a row, despite still being on the menu. No explination or apology provided. Disappointing for such a well-regarded establishment, especially as they have such a small and simple menu.

Had a tough day at work, showed up quite late at Godfrey's, absolutely superb cod and chips, made everything OK again...thankyou

Always go to Godfrey’s for a takeaway, but this time we decided the dine in. Food is always incredible. Fish is a perfect size. Chip potions are great. And the mushy peas are AMAZING!! Good selection of fish, pies, etc. Kids portions as well. Staff were friendly and lovely. Always welcoming! Recommend highly to everyone living in Harpenden. Always busy on the weekend so call your order in advance. Take your own bag as well. Homemade tartare sauce is banging, you can buy jars and then retake them to refill. Such a good idea.

Yet again on a Friday evening we phoned through our order to collect at 8.30 (prime time I would suggest). Arrived home to find dry, shrivelled, inedible chips and semi cold pie and cod! This is the third time we have been disappointed. If we do revisit we will check the contents of our order before we leave! We have been regular customers since Godfreys opened, therefore we know how high the quality was originally. It is notable that on the occasions the ‘mum’ is not present, presumably the quality control!

Fab chips and fish quality and quantity on the expensive side but well deserved at the level of the quality they serve, also available gluten free chips on one day of the week.

Had the Halloumi & chips, probably the best chippy chips I've had to date, with some decent Halloumi too. Also got the cod which was decent but just tastes like your standard cod you would find in most fish & chips places. Overall a good experience.

Nice haddock but would be nicer if they deskinned though nowhere round here does!

Godfreys produce the best fish and chips in the area. The staff are great, as is the restaurant, too.

The service was exceptional and the cod was cooked to perfection, I highly recommend this place its the best cod & chips in town.

Food superb and freshly cooked. Went there with a friend today for lunch; had regular size haddock and chips& mushy peas. Portions were ample. Fish was fresh, batter superb as were the chips. Excellent service too. I live in London and my friend more locally, but we always meet up here and will continue to do so. Highly recommended.

This is the best place for fish and chips in Hertfordshire. I've been a few times to Godfreys and each time the food and service have been excellent. The staff are very friendly and the food always comes quickly. The portions are generous and the food is always cooked to order and is delicious. Despite living in High Barnet, this is my go to chippy in the area and is worth the drive.

Fantastic chips & fish is brilliant too. Take away is really good. Not tried restaurant, but seating is available. Still my favourite place for fish & chips, I also tried the their homemade tartare sauce, fabulous. Worth the trip from Luton to Harpenden.

Went to Godfrey’s for lunch and we decided to dine in rather than take out and have a picnic. The lady that served us was very friendly. She offered us seats at the front of the restaurant which overlooks the high street or the back. We opted for the front (which is on the second level). Service was very friendly and the food was excellent. Everything was freshly cooked. I had the cod and chips and my wife had scampi and chips. The fish was fresh. It was very soft and the batter was perfect. The chips was very nice too. The tartar sauce was home made (I think). It was very nice and accompanied the fish very well. The decor is modern and the seating fairly spacious. We had a lovely lunch. For 2 of us, the bill came to £32 which is average. We really enjoyed it and will definitely visit again next time we are in Harpenden. Great fish and chips.

Always a great place to eat, best fish n chips in Harpenden, food cooked fresh to order (hence big queues for take aways) and helpful staff- but don't tell everyone, otherwise it might get too busy!! 😉

It's great to see a busy business, it can only mean the food is good at an acceptable price with great service. Keep up the good work, will be back next week.

Very nice restaurant all round. Everything was very good, just found that my plaice was a little bland and watery. Lots of seating upstairs over 2 rooms or so, if you wanted to eat there rather than the traditional takeout

Godfrey's continues to be one of the very best fish and chip establishments in the UK! I've been a regular customer for years and throughout they've remained at the top of their game. The fish (I go for haddock and would strongly recommend, though of course it depends on your taste) has always been cooked perfectly and to order. Service is excellent too, with friendly and efficient staff. I'd happily give them 6 stars if that was an option - I can't recommend highly enough if you like fish and chips.

Absolutely love this place, probably the best fish and chips in Hertfordshire. Takeaway downstairs but we always eat in upstairs where they have lovely wooden beamed dining rooms, very afternoon tea feel! The menu is v reasonably priced and the meals come with their homemade tartare sauce and one of curry/mushy peas/coleslaw. Personal favourite is the scampi and chips and I always have it with a cream soda.

Went to Godfrey’s last night for the first time. We opted to sit in the restaurant. It was a warm, cosy atmosphere. The waiting staff were extremely efficient. The fish was cooked to order. It was the best fish and chips we have ever eaten. The batter on the fish wasn’t greasy, and it was very light. The chips were lovely and crispy, again not greasy. You get a good selection of sides - different types of peas, gravy etc. I would recommend booking on a Saturday night. We will return

Great take away. Steep stairs but a quaint old house for the restaurant. Delicious fish and chips but pies and plenty of sides available too. Wine and beer as well as soft drinks. Loo upstairs.

Having been a customer for over a decade, I will still state it is the best fish and chips I've ever had, and wonderful service from very friendly staff. Even when it's busy they manage to get delicious food out in a decent amount of time. Great for a take-away, or to eat in.

We had a fish and chip takeaway tonight and I am sorry to say, it wasn't it's usual good standard. The fish itself was still of good quality, (although it was a smaller piece of fish than usual for a 'regular'), but the batter wasn't it's usual nice crispiness, especially underneath where it was soggy and inedible. The chips too are usually lovely and crispy but tonight they were soft and oily tasting. Noted that Luke nor his mum were not there doing the cooking, so this could have been a factor. It's been our favourite fish and chip shop for many years, since it opened, so hoping this was just a one-off...

Superb take away shop. Food amazing and service always top notch. Recommend pre ordering and collecting 20 minutes later as it can get very busy.

Easily the best fish and chips across St Albans and Harpenden. Quality is always high and so far never been disappointed once.

Great menu, good for eat in upstairs (this time) or takeout. Also had ice-cream afterwards. Came quickly, the peas were wrong kind but were quickly replaced but we noted the next table also had that problem. They do minted mashed garden peas which I've never had elsewhere. The plaice can be huge and we have shared this previously. But you can take what's left home.

Great fish and chip shop/restaurant. The restaurant is on several floors up fairly steep stairs so not the best if you have mobility issues. Food is great. Lots of choice and fairly reasonably priced. The staff are very friendly and look after you well. Can be very busy and parking is very limited outside but there are car parks nearby.

Amazing fish and chips - the place is a bit small though

Fantastic quality of fish and chips. Probably the best you'll have. The batter is light and crispy, the chips perfectly cooked and there's some magic in those peas. Wonderful service and great dining experience.

Never fails to deliver the most excellent tasting fish and chips (and the best garden peas and tartare sauce). There's friendly, helpful and speedy service. Can't fault this place, it's so brilliant we drive 45 minutes just to eat here.

Many years ago I was in Harpenden and tried Godfrey's and the cod was delicious so when they opened their shop in Bushey I used it until it unfortunately closed (I live in Watford). Last Friday evening I decided to travel by bus to Harpenden to Godfrey's so I ordered a medium cod but when I opened the box I thought I had been given a small cod instead on pointing this out I was told it was a medium cod it just looked small because the fish was thicker on leaving the shop and preceding to eat the fish another customer came up to me and laughing at me and said that what I had looked like a fish finger not a medium cod and I should complain which I said to him I had but it had made no difference needles to say I went home feeling somewhat humiliated. In light of your explanation I would like to apologise and amend my review to "excellent service" and look forward to visiting Godfrey's again. Perhaps other customers might refrain from making inappropriate comments on my purchase in future

As a whole the fish and chips wasn't bad but also wasn't anything particularly special. (mostly due to the portion size) The person in front ordered the same size (small) cod and it was double the size, the chips and coleslaw were both very nice but again small portion of chips. Also value for money was not there

Not visited for a year and sadly prices have gone up significantly, but more worryingly the complementary homemade tartare sauce that was included with all fish, is no longer complimentary. And they close early everyday. Seems the golden age of Godfreys is gone.... On the plus side - Cod did taste good and service was prompt

The cod & chips were so delicious with amazing mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce! My Mum had the scampi and she said that too was delicious. The service was efficient and very friendly. The fish is made to order so is very fresh and the batter crispy! We live half an hour from Harpenden but it is well worth the journey.

My parents' favourite! Food and service were excellent; my folks come here often and love the fish, and my battered halloumi was light and delicious. Chips were the best I've had in years. Only docking a star because a significant amount of menu items turned out to be unavailable.

Had Luke and his team cater for party with their excellent mobile unit, wow was it a success! Extremely professional and friendly serving superb food, most guests agreed was best fish and chips they have ever had! Good selection of mains, including a vegetarian option, and side dishes. Curry sauce and minted peas were especially appreciated, would highly recommend.

This place is absolutely amazing! All the staff were kind and helpful, food was GREAT and service overall was a 10/10! Would definitely come back and if I could rate it higher, I certainly would!

Good quality fish and chips restaurant in Harpenden. Regular size is quite satisfying. Small eating space, good and fast service. You can choose various options next to the main dishes, yet coleslaw is very good.

Best chippy in the area. A bit pricey but the quality is excellent!
