Just had a lovely lunch at Merryhatton. I had the quiche, my husband had the chicken and bacon burger and my granddaughter had the Mac cheese. All three options were lovely. Service was great and very efficient and friendly. The place was lovely and clean and spacious. Will definitely return.

Feel very disappointed to be writing this if but if I dont how will you know. Have always had a great service but have noticed a huge change over the past few weeks. Today, we waited 20 minutes before I decided to go to counter to order. The menu board didn't show the soup that was available, and even after I was told someone forgot to write it on the board, no one took the initiative to do so. Staff don't look very happy and normally would check if everything ok. As a regular customer (once or twice a week) it's sad to see the decline. The food itself is lovely. I completely understand that there may be staff shortages but even with that , training may need to be refreshed. Real pity as very handy.

5 of us for lunch, two of whom found the cutlery they had been given was dirty. This was replaced when brought to staff’s attention. 3 of us ordered baked potatoes, the other 2 panini’s. One potato arrived well before the others. When everyone else received their food some time later the first potato to the table was now very cool, it was then on opening found to be bad in the middle. Totally black. How this was missed when cutting open to add the filling I really don’t know. Was replaced when brought to staff’s attention. By the time it was replaced everyone else had finished their lunch. Merryhatton now crossed off our list of places to meet and lunch.

Ordered American style pancakes, with maple syrup fruit and cream - the pancakes were not homemade, they were solid, no maple syrup and mouldy fruit. Scrambled eggs on toast, the eggs were over cooked and the toast was undercooked. Two cheese scones, one was raw in the middle. Won’t be back.

I was a regular customer here. But not any more. My friend and l had a coffee and a scone each, at the till my coffee and scone was £1 more than my friends. When l question this it turns out there is a premium on gluten free cakes and scones. I really could not believe it... It's hard enough being coeliac with out been penalised. Ok ingredients are possibly more expensive but £1 a item !!.. I was HORRIFIED.. Went home and rang round all the other local cafes and garden center and not one of them charge a premium on gluten free cakes. So l 🤔 think my friend and l will be going to another local Caffe in future......

Friday 8 Dec 1pm. Took 20 mins to be served after being seated and had to ask to be served. Friend ordered xmas club sandwich which was good, but I had the macaroni cheese which I’ve had before and it was always very nice. However, I was shocked today by receiving a tiny bowl of cooked macaroni mixed with a small amount of melted cheese. This is not macaroni cheese, there was no sauce! I have to be honest and say it was the worst Mac and Cheese I have ever had. Come on people, if your chef can’t make a decent Mac and Cheese then you have no chance! Nice staff but slow service and food not as good as it used to be.

Poor food and long waits at every turn. Got menus then after a 15 minute wait one of our party went to find the waitress. Order taken we waited another 40 minutes for it to arrive. The order was wrong, two incorrect and one missing. Those folk had to wait another 20 minutes for their food. No apology or compensation offered. We’d long since given up on the soft drinks requested but they attempted to serve them after everyone had finished eating. Then had to search out someone to pay and even that process took ages. Just avoid

It was between poor and average. Positives were nice engaging staff, above average coffee and cake. However, the wait was ridiculous. One couple near us were fuming … we were silently enraged. Building is very tired with ripped wallpaper and buckets catching water from leaking roof. Prices in high side which is fine if you have quality to match. Car park is rough and muddy.

Our experience of visiting Merryhatton Garden Centre for lunch today has ensured that we won’t be returning anytime soon. There were three of us: my wife and I with our two-year-old grandson. The restaurant was busy but there was no waiting for a table; it was only after we were seated that the waiting began! It took about 15 minutes before our order was taken; one soup, one panini and one children’s box to include a ham sandwich and a box of orange juice. After about 15 minutes, the adults’ drinks were served but there was no milk for the tea (which had been requested) and nothing for the little boy. After a further 30+ minute wait – during which time we asked twice when our food would be served – it eventually arrived … for the adults. A further reminder had to be given before the child’s box arrived … which was very disappointing. The orange juice ordered was served as apple juice and the ham sandwich looked more like something you might serve in a truckers’ ‘greasy spoon’ caf’. The ‘doorsteps’ of cold, hard bread with thick crusts contained several slices of what looked more like gammon steak than ham suitable for a two-year-old and, needless to say, was not eaten. Had it been served to me, I wouldn’t have eaten it either. When I went to pay the bill, I commented to our server that we were less than impressed. He apologised for the delays because they were “busy” and said he would let the kitchen know that we weren’t happy with the ham sandwich. I expressed surprise that the the price of the sandwich wasn’t being deducted from our bill and was told that couldn’t be done. Another member of staff made the comment that, if the sandwich was too big, my grandson, “… could have eaten a bit of it.” I consider it unacceptable to keep a two-year-old waiting for so long for a poor attempt at a child’s meal. The food which my wife and I had was fine but to serve it more than half-an-hour after the drinks was also unacceptable. Merryhatton Garden Centre is well placed to provide an enjoyable eating out experience but their lack of an adequate system for serving food coupled with their poor customer service has left us feeling very let down.

We stopped coming here because it was pricey and the service was poor. Sadly, this was our experience again. We were handed menus and advised that our orders would be taken in a couple of minutes but nobody ever came back. My sister had to go up to order and when the food came one of our orders was wrong, another missing and no check back. We were not given enough cutlery. My daughter enjoyed her macaroni cheese but the chicken burgers were very poor quality, sandwishes okay. We were given water but no glasses, they only came with the soft drinks which came after the food.

Terrible breakfast with elderly Parents. My tea arrived with a fly coming out the spout then went for a swim in my pot of tea. Replaced my tea and told me they had to do something about the flies, they were everywhere!! Not good. Poured my tea and was stone cold, asked parents and their drinks were cold, left everything. We were not going to complain but at the cash desk they were mocking a lady who brought back cold coffee! Should they be acting like this towards their customers? After witnessing this my Sister spoke up and said it’s terrible you are treating that lady like that because all our drinks were cold. Stunned at this he apologised and said it was his fault for not turning the urn on. Maybe concentrate on the job and customers rather than ignoring them. Elderly guy too busy talking to a couple at next table and when another couple walked out because no service he wasn’t bothered. Times are hard to be treating their Customers like this. Definitely won’t be back!!

I found it to be quite dirty, the high chair we had hadn’t been cleaned. The cushions on the chairs were disgusting and needed a good clean. Took my wee one to the toilet and it really does need decorated, wallpaper peeling off the walls, empty soap dispenser. Food was good but I really think it’s in need of an update and a good clean. Very disappointed with "breakfast" at Merryhatton Garden Centre near North Berwick. Cant seem to leave a review on their page so here goes. I know its been a while since we visited due to all the restrictions but we used to have a lovely cooked breakfast there. So we thought we would take the dogs to Yellowcraigs Beach and have breakfast at Merryhatton. Not a happy wee bunny that they no longer do cooked breakfasts. BUT, they can do a filled roll (£3.55) and extras like Bacon, Potato Scone, Hash Brown, Sausage, Haggis, Egg for £1 extra for each. So why not just chuck it all on a plate and add some Baked Beans and call it a cooked breakfast? Dont understand their thinking, I'd happily pay £11-£14 for a full brekky! On a good note their staff and the coffee were great 😉 Sadly wont be back

4 of us stopped for lunch. Despite not being busy it took 50 minutes for our sandwiches to arrive, and then only after we chased them. At 45 mins they discovered they had no brown bread. When the sandwiches did arrive the coronation chicken was curry powder and mayo with no sultanas or any other ingredients. The chicken was mostly absent with the majority of the sandwich being the poor sauce. Won’t be making that mistake again. Avoid if you can.

I write this as a fairly regular visitor to the cafe, without cause for complaint on all previous visits. Today I felt a little let down by Merryhatton. I arrived at 11:20 with my wife, toddler and newborn. After a refresh for the kids in the toilets, we joined the queue at 11:25 and could see the cafe was unusually quiet with only 3 sitting tables. The very elderly gentleman in front of us took an exceptionally long time to complete his tables' order for hot drinks and traybake and we waited passionately. I asked the bald gentleman with tattoos serving for 2 breakfasts to which he replied it we were 3 minutes late and breakfast had stopped, but we could still get breakfast rolls. I explained in great detail that my wife is type 1 insulin dependent diabetic and eats a diet consisting of less than 30grams of carbs, and eating a bread roll would make her very sick. Baked potatoes, toasties, quiche etc would make her bedbound for the rest of the day and asked if he could make an exception, serve her breakfast and I'd order from the lunch menu with my kids. He was steadfast; there wouldn't be any flexibility. In the end, I ordered her 3 breakfast rolls at £3.25 each with the specific instructions that we didn't need the rolls. The server was clearly irritated we were still getting a breakfast - albeit far more expensive than I was expecting to pay. It was a "needs must" from our point of view. As I expected when it came out it was on 3 individual small plates, not the one big plate I'd requested and with 3 floury rolls which were sent back. Because I don't have medical reasons to be fussy with my order I had a baked potato and a bowl of your homemade lentil. Of course, the food was lovely, it always is and I'll be back. But the better businesses go the extra mile for customers. You have breakfast items sitting in the kitchen which you're prepared to sell on rolls but there's absolutely no wriggle room because the clock had ticked past 11:30 ( due to a slow customer) and what makes me angry no sympathy towards medical conditions which might limit your menu for certain customers. I don't like writing negative comments towards an excellent business which is why I've not marked you down in stars but please be a little bit more considerate towards other customers in the future. Without them, you don't have a business.

The cafe is usually a treat; inexpensive and has a great view across the fields and farms towards the coast. This morning we were looking forward to a hearty breakfast. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Staff at the food desk made us feel unwelcome, slow, not listening, too busy with their own silly giggling to place our order and pour our drinks. A 'how are you this morning' would have been nice, but not forthcoming. The breakfast when it came was tepid, greasy and some parts hard and uncooked. Disappointing. We will not be back. Would have filled in a comments card to place in the box there and then but there were none. Training, customer care and quality, nil points.

We have been going to Merryhattons for many many years, however the recent changes have made us now look elsewhere. The first mistake in my opinion was to take the side partitions away which leaves a characterless space and also loses the divide for families with children in the play area and people who are wishing a quiet lunch. The menus and quality of the food presented has changed, not for the better. I can not see the quality of the food improving as this is not due to the recent refurbishment, but more cost cutting. It gives me no pleasure to submit this review as we have many many years of happy memories of going to Merryhattons and taking our grandchildren there throughout the year and especially at Christmas.

The good reviews I would agree with until I visited yesterday and things have changed, not for the better. There is a new menu with similar prices to the old one however it was a toss up whether I would review this as poor or terrible. What a let down.IThe order took ages and was luke warm when it arroved. Zero points fpr presentation and zero for quality. I ordered tuna toastie which looked like something a young student would produce to watch the footie on TV. The toast was barely warm, soggy and very bendy. The chip portion (a cupful) was warm , tasted nothing like anything sourced from a potato. My friend ordered chilli, melted cheese nachos. This arrived in a rather small portion in bowl (for the price). Not very hot and no sign of melted cheese until she dug deep and found unmelted cheese at the bottom. I have been meeting various friends and family at Merry Hatton for years and am stunned at what they are dishing out especially when they were so good before. It is time to find somewhere new.

Myself and my young family have been loyal visitors to Merry Hatton for years and I have been to the cafe countless times. We can't tell you how disappointed we are with recent changes to the kitchen/menus. All the interesting salads & meals seem to have been taken away and all that seems to be left are sandwiches/toastie/baked potato and soups and other 'easy to heat up' options. There is no big visible menu any longer or the menus on stands. On a recent visit, I ordered nachos which came with most of the grated cheese still unmelted and what felt like a real lack of care over the finished dish. I appreciate that the changes may be a work in progress, maybe there's more work to be done or a new manager/chef will be hired, however in the meantime, I'm really disappointed that a much loved cafe has changed so much. If this lack of menu choice and substandard meals continue we will likely take our regular businness to The Store, which has interesting daily/weekly specials and is (also) small child friendly. I am certainly not the only local who feels like this.

There was even a warm quiche for us to share as well as lovely warm scones, tasty wee cakes and a selection of savoury sandwiches. Attentive staff made sure we had top ups of our drinks when needed. As well as being great food and welcoming hospitality I thought it was superb value for money at just £7.95 each! I can't praise it highly enough and would recommend anyone go along for a wee treat.

What was once very good has had deteriorated dramatically. Incompetent kitchen staff can not prepare simple orders. Those serving did try to help out but they’ve been left in an unfortunate position.

Three of us just had afternoon tea at Merryhatton. It was one of the best I have ever had with lovely freshly made sandwiches and all home baking. Loads to eat but brought home a few sweet treats for hubby. Would recommend and will definitely return. Excellent value for price paid. Have paid over double in past at other local hotels and for me this was as good if not better.

Called in here many times before and never had any complaints but we were very disappointed. Stopped here for a coffee and could not believe the amount of flies flying about the serving counter so glad we were only in for coffee because I could never have enjoyed a meal from here . Even when we sat down there were still a lot of flies. It was not busy at the time we were in so there was no excuse for the amount of tables that needed clearing, nearly every table outside had dirty plates etc. Very disappointed won't rush back.

Treated my mum to afternoon tea here and what a treat it was! From the get go staff welcomed us with a smile. We were taken to our table and tea and coffee came out promptly. Afternoon tea was served on a delightful little picnic table - sandwiches, cakes and scones. All were absolutely delicious! Plenty of choice and a very generous portion. Servers were friendly and attentive, checking in on us regularly and replenishing our drinks.

We have just finished afternoon tea at Merryhatton. It was absolutely delicious and plentiful, we came home with a doggy bag we couldn’t finish it. We were served by Janette who was so helpful, she checked everything was okay and topped up our hot drinks more than once. Highly recommended, I’ve tried a lot of afternoon teas that have cost much more and not a patch on this. We will be back!

We had a nice lunch with family. The only problem was that coleslaw was put on a plate of food for a vegan and had to be sent back. A "baked potato with baked beans: no butter, please as its for a vegan" was not clear enough.

Had we not been given an "afternoon tea for two" voucher as a gift it would probably not have occurred to us to try the cafe at Merryhatton. So, as it would have been rude not to take advantage of the gift we did visit on a rare sunny Spring afternoon. Our verdict? Pretty good apart from the fact that we had no quiche, just sandwiches which other reviewers seem to have enjoyed. The other minor point is that we would have preferred more of the savoury and less of the sweet. Yes, a minor gripe but neither my beloved go a bundle on sweet meats. That said the scones and the meringue were of excellent quality and the portions of jam and cream were exceedingly generous. Service was a little slow but the staff were very pleasant. We also observed other customers had ordered hot food with the fish and chips looking pretty good; perhaps a good choice for a future visit. The shop is well worth a browse, looking at those things you don't really need but end up buying like a visit to IKEA; not really but readers may get the drift. Would we try the cafe again? Probably as we do make use of the garden centre itself.

We visit Merry Hatton whenever we are in the area and have always found excellent service and lovely breakfast. Until our Easter Sunday visit. Not sure what has happened but the staff were sullen and service was not as usual. Asked to swap black pudding for haggis on my breakfast to be told I would be charged, not a major issue but a bit mean, and never been an issue in past. Eggs solid as rocks! Such a shame - it's a competitive area and we won't return.

And to top it off my wife got a small gift for her birthday.

I contacted the cafe this morning as, due to inclement weather, we had to change our plans for my mother-in-law's 96th birthday. They were happy to accept a booking and I can honestly say I am glad it snowed today as we were treated to the best afternoon tea I think I have ever had! The staff were friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. As for the selection of goodies that were brought to the table - wow!! There was a good selection of tasty sandwiches, the haggis balls were lovely and the cakes were amazing. They even put a candle on one of the cakes. All the way home my mother-in-law kept saying what a lovely time she had had. Thank you all for helping to rescue what could have been a disastrous day.

Visited this place with my 2 daughters,my mum and 2 year old granddaughter. The play area was really needing a deep steam clean. The toys were very sticky and some toys had sharp plastic. Anyway I ordered at the till while the rest picked their seats, it wasn't busy but there was some kind of work being done in the cafe. I ordered two soups and two scones with four coffees. The wee one wanted soup so I asked if she could have a small child's portion of tattie soup ((her favourite)) "yes"came the reply, but wait for this, "I will need to charge you full price" I was flabbergasted so,quickly replied "no thanks" We ended up getting a spare cup to spoon some out for her. Now I know that the cafe provide a child's menu but most children love homemade soup and bread so why not put it on the menu for them. Very disappointed

Very slow service. Weak cold coffee and poor baking. Had to sit out in the cold because we had a dog with us, Told in no uncertain terms that dogs are not allowed. They are a Garden Centre for goodness sake not The Ritz. The small outdoor area was covered in bird dirt and the tables were also dirty. We won't be returning in the near future. There are lots of places now in East Lothian and where you can take a dog and you can get a real flat white coffee not made by a child.

We visit regularly as a family for lunch, so when we saw the Christmas lunch on the menu, we booked as an end of term treat. We certainly weren't disappointed, the turkey and stuffing were delicious, veg cooked to perfection and the sherry trifle to die for! Stopped for lunch because the family saw the afternoon teas advertised throughout the store. We saw several being served and promptly asked for four of our own. We were asked if we had booked them as none were available unless we had already booked days in advance. I asked why they would advertise in the store if you can't buy any but there was no real answer.

Stopped in here for breakfast after reading good reviews. I wasn’t dissappointed. The full breakfast was excellent value with free tea/coffee refills. It was very tasty and more importantly it was hot! I have a huge issue with places serving luke warm food, inparticular baked beans, but here they were piping hot which instantly impressed me. The staff were all cheerful and friendly. The atmosphere was very calm and laid back. I would recommend a visit here, the cakes look fantastic too

Went with my parents to Merryhatton on our way to Gullane. My parents are the worlds biggest critics on scones, and Merryhatton passed! The number of cherries in the cherry scones was amazing! The cheese scones were very tasty as were the apricot ones. Coffee was in nice big mugs so that you didn't require a top up. Jut over GBP12.00 for 3 of us for morning coffee with scones which is good value.
