A sadly disappointing meal - cauliflower cheese that had little cauliflower in it and gave my husband indigestion, and parsnip soup that was just solid puréed parsnip.

Our meeting place today after a motorcycle ride. Quaint little tea rooms. No greeting on entry. Picked a table for two. A gentleman took our order eventually and the tea was excellent (enough for 2+ cups each) and the scones were delicious. No cheery farewell or greeting and I wish the gentleman who served us had been a bit more engaging and had smiled. Does breakfasts and lunches too. A few reserved tables so obviously popular.

Out making the most of the sun in Newent. Our usual cafe/bookshop had sadly closed down. Popped in for coffee. Lovely log fire and excellent, sensibly priced coffee. Off for a walk then back for an amazing lunch of lamb shanks, well cooked vegetable selection and yummy dessert. We will return.

A lovely homely feel to this place and the friendly staff. This place feels like you’re having home cooked dinner by the grandparents (however the owners are not that old!) Very good food and very high quality, only negative I can say about this place is that it hasn’t got many vegetarian options but the stilton and mushroom toast was amazing!

When we entered the tea rooms we assumed it must be closed as the 'front of house' just stared at us without saying anything. I suggested a table for 2, to which he replied 'what for?', which was a bit odd. I persevered and said 'breakfast', so he then showed us to a table. No menu was produced, but he then stood at our table and said 'well?' I looked at him wandering what would happen next. 'You said you wanted breakfast' he said. 'Big or small?' Not being sure what big or small referred to, we both asked if a bacon sandwich was possible, which was apparently fine. We were then served quickly with fresh bacon sandwiches (on white - no choice offered) and a pot of tea, which were both fine. So, in summary, good food, good value but 'front of house' could do with some training!

I give this 4 stars rather than 3 because it was certainly a decent price. £3.00 for a pot of tea and toast with egg. Very good! It's a shame though that the service seemed a bit strained. Come on guys, it's surely not hard to smile and make the customer feel special even if you're not feeling it yourself. The chap who served me continued his conversation with another diner, presumably a local and subsequently forgot to give me a mug to go with my pot of tea. I had to walk to the counter and ask for one. Also, my brown toast arrived as white. Payment: "do you take cards?", I asked. "do you have the cash?", was the reply. How much are shops charged for using a card in this day and age? It surely can't be that much on my £3.00 meal? Not a big thing of course but again, it just feels that you're not putting the customer's desires ahead of your own needs. Just telling it as it is.

We popped in on Tuesday afternoon to a very friendly welcome. We choose a main course each, my husband had the smoked haddock and mozzarella fishcakes and I had the lasagne. We both really enjoyed our delicious lunch, washed down with two pots of loose leaf tea. We enjoyed it so much we returned for lunch today, it was very busy with a large table booked in . We found a table and sat down,we saw a lovely roast chicken dinner being delivered to the big table,so I asked if we could order that as well. Luckily for us it was available, so glad and it was one of the best roast chicken dinners my husband and I have had in a long time delicious. We found room for pudding I had a chocolate roulade , husband had lemon meringue pie both so yummy. Lovely setting and very friendly staff highly recommend a visit. We will be returning again soon . Excellent value and fantastic food and service .

i am responding to the previous review. The tearoom is open for sunday lunch and surprisingly this is lunchtime, not 4.20pm. We were part of a group of 10, that had booked 3 weeks previously for the last sitting at 2.00pm Obviously it takes time to serve a 2 course meal with coffee and were, still in the restaurant when these people called in. To give 2 star review, because they were told they were closed,is just plain nasty. and unnecessary.

No faults with the lovely lunch and friendly service. Enjoyed our meal very much. The trouble was the loo. It's up a stair, then down a stair, making it unusable for my father, who has mobility issues. I used it and, although clean and pleasant, the lock did not work. despite much trying. As the door was right next to a service door and also to a back alley door it left me feeling extremely vulnerable. Badly needs fixed to provide privacy and security.

A former barber's shop in the 19th century and yes they do teas, but they also do lots of very reasonably priced daily main meal specials advertised on an ever-changing blackboard. But the real highlight is the breakfast, or brunch. A big plate of two local sausages, two chunky slices of back bacon, mushrooms, hash brown, two eggs cooked to your choosing with half a slice of fried bread with either beans or tomatoes and toast and butter; washed down with a large pot of tea and excellent value at £6.80. Some say it's the best breakfast in the county and it's hard to disagree. Seating for only about 20 and well behaved dogs are welcome. Friendly owners and staff too. No cards taken but a cashpoint is 20 yards away. Immediate parking could be awkward but plenty available within walking distance. Definitely recommended.

We go to the buttery regularly for lunch and have yet to be disappointed. I am a fussy eater and Judith tries her best to accommodate my palate more often than not she succeeds, her homemade desserts are great I usually don't have room for dessert so take it home with me. Beware they only take cash that is how they keep the prices reasonable there is a bank across the road . Pete the waiter is really friendly and likes to have a laugh with the customers so much so they have a lot of regulars including us.

Came here for lunch after picking up a mirror from a local. The variety of food is what drew us in, there was so much on offer which not all tea rooms consider serving. The food was perfect, so much for such a cheap price. However the staff really let the experience down, the waitress did not seem happy, she dumped the drinks and walked off, there was no smiles and not very chatty. Went to pay to be told they don't have a card machine. Why? Such an inconvenience for customers if there is a group of them that don't have the cash on them - Luckily we did have the cash. Was unsure whether to actually tip, but working in the hospitality industry myself I know it is nice when people do tip- so felt I should give a small amount. The man (guessing is the owner) was the nicest one out of the 3 people on. Who was smiling and was interacting with the customers around us. If staff seemed more friendly then I would of considered giving 5 stars - It just put the mood down slightly.

Having originally been recommended by a work colleague, my wife and I have now had the pleasure of Sunday dining at The Buttery on a couple of occasions and intend to return for more! Peter and Judith are so welcoming and are ably assisted by their delightful waitress. What strikes you immediately is that they genuinely care about the service and the food they are providing. Their warmth of welcome matches that of the log fire and the food itself is cooked to perfection. All too often food is served at mediocre temperatures - not at this place! You can savour your food and conversation without feeling rushed or without fear of your food going cold. If you are looking for top quality food served by people who love their jobs and want their customers to leave happy then this is one place you should definitely try. You won't be disappointed and you may well end up coming again!
