The Butcher's Hook in South Gloucestershire

Gem of a pub in an historic building in the middle of the High Street. Varied selection of around a dozen well-kept ales which constantly changes, plus lager and cider on tap. Friendly and knowledgable service and good value. What a good pub should be.

If you like real ale then this is the only pub in town. You might have to badger Jason to always have a bitter on! But you won’t find a better pub in this town

Lovely place and really nice staff. Now have an amazing place for food called Pigs Pizzas, the pizzas are the best I’ve ever had. Exactly what Thornbury was missing. Can’t wait for my next pizza and pint 🍺

Comment from Graham Richards - I am a Butcher’s Hook regular because the Hook is the only good beer / staff / clientele / food pub in the whole district. Business is improving through word of mouth and the pizza service. However, the daytime music playlist of jazz and swing is nothing short of appalling. Great music in its time but totally depressing when played each day. I feel like asking for a beer and a razor blade to slit my wrists. The staff playlists are excellent - 60’s, 70’s to the current day. Elevator music should stay in elevators.

Lovely pub and nice atmosphere. We enjoyed our time in a table outside. Tom was was just brilliant, friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend this to all.

Fantastic pub on the high street with excellent outdoor seating on a summer evening. Beer choice is fantastic, staff were incredibly friendly and gave great suggestions on what they’d suggest to drink. Pizzas were incredible, the garlic one in particular was superb! Atmosphere was amazing with brilliant live music. 100% recommend!

What a lovely pub! Great vibe, and friendly, happy staff! You can’t ask for much more.. apart from maybe timing my next visit to be a Friday, or Saturday, to score one of the pizzas everyone’s raving about!

Glad to see some real ales on tap ! Dog friendly with snacks and ice cream as well. We live near by and has become our pub of choice. 5 stars !

Pigs Pizzas is in charge of the food, absolutely delicious! The pub has a nice relaxed atmosphere, all staff are very friendly and chatty. The front of the pub looks lovely with beautiful hanging baskets. The bar has a good selection of beers and some gins that I've never seen before. Highly recommend

Great pub! The Butcher’s Hook in Thornbury is situated in a beautiful old building on the High street of the quaint market Town. It has an eclectic range of craft beers, including some stunning IPAs, lagers and cider. All kept in excellent condition - some are quite potent - and only served in three quarter pints! The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff will do almost anything to make you feel at home. Plenty of seating inside and out. A lovely spot at any time of the year, but hard to beat on a sunny day. And if that’s not enough. Pig’s Pizza serve some stunning food on Friday and Saturday. Highly recommend.

So it's the best beer pub in Thornbury, but that's not a high bar to jump. Prices are top of the range and the cask beers often not in the best condition. That said, it's a great setting with a real community pub feeling.

Great ales and excellent service

The only thing that let's The Hook down is the outdoor seating. The Volley may get away with neglected picnic benches but it at best it does nothing to attract anyone who visits Thornbury High Street and at worst, it puts people off. Minor repairs, a coat of paint and a couple of decorative finishes and voilà, see what could be achieved. So much more appealing.

Awesome cozy old school pub with a fantastic selection of ales which are very very well kept. Lovely atmosphere, Barman really friendly too. Would love to go-back in the winter months for a session.

A real favourite to visit, great beer, fantastic atmosphere and very friendly staff

Not made it here before but glad we have now. Excellent beer and the wife loves the cider. Staff are so helpful and friendly, really making your visit the best it can be. This pub will be first stop on future visits to Thornbury. Back again, forgot to say the beer is kept in the best condition, better than I have in most other pubs.

One of my favourite pubs, friendly staff serving delicious real ales and ciders inc a good selection of low/alcohol-free. A friendly atmosphere, real fires too. No TV screens or slot machines here. Somewhere to come for a great beer with your mates.

The Butchers hook is a great pub with a massive selection of beers & Ciders to choose from. The staff here are all lovely and can’t do enough to help you. They are always more than happy to let you try a taster if you are fussy like me and don't know what to choose. the Juice Forsyth was a personal favorite. The Butchers hook is an absolute dream. The staff here are all lovely and can’t do enough to help you. I really love the customer interaction that they provide you with when you’re thinking what drink you would like to have. They are always more than happy to let you try a taster so you are always able to make the correct choice. The building itself is also an absolute highlight, so cosy and perfect in these winter months giving you a really cosy Christmas feel due to their Christmas trees and log burners. If you’re looking for a lovely pub in Thornbury then this is certainly one for you to check out.

Friday night want a quiet drink. Instead BOOM BOOM absurdly loud rock group in one room which made it impossibly to hear companions speaking.

This is what a local pub should be like. I just love this place. It is not just local in name but also in what it serves. Even though it is on the high street it is quiet and cosy. Some of my best afternoons and evenings have been spent here in the company of friends and colleagues. They have recently started hosting live music on Fridays and added cocktails to the menu. Their homemade rolls are quite delicious as well. I highly recommend this place whether you are alone or with a company!

Best beer in Thornbury! Have been here many times, very friendly reception from the staff and very knowledgeable of the drinks they have on. The beers change on a regular basis, so there is always plenty of variety. If you're looking for a good watering hole that serves top quality local craft beers and light nibbles, look no further.

I really like this pub with a great range of drinks. However recent visits have been spoiled by very loud music in all the rooms. It would be great if one room was music free for people who want to talk.

Staff are friendly and knowledgeable - they're able to recommend a pint that'll suit you and are happy to chew the cud. Personally love that they have a piano that's free to play in the back room!

Oh my word! This place is wonderful! A fantastic range of real ales, including a really nice alcohol free ale (tinned). Great vibe & atmosphere with friendly staff. Next time I'm in town I will definitely return! 10/10.

Excellent pint or 2 of ale! Only thing that stops me giving it 5 stars is I'll always remember it as a curry house, and it doesn't feel like a pub! Not much they can do about that!!

This pub has everything you could wish for in a good pub. Real local ale, a fab cheese selection, log fires and a friendly atmosphere. Great place to catch up with friend or make new ones. We made sure our new house was within walking distance of this place before we bought it!

A lovely old fashioned traditional pub

I assumed it was under construction it was so plain and frugal. Bare boards as floor hard wooden seats and some benches, no pictures in walls, no soft furnishings in fact just a plain uninviting old style pub and rather depressing. I spent three hours at s recent pub quiz, sat on a wooden bench. My back was in agony when I got home. There are plenty of comfortable welcoming pubs in Thornbury, this isn't one of them.

LOVE this pub..... Best (real) beer in Thornbury. Lovely relaxed atmosphere for and evening out. Quiz night is a good laugh, yet to try the "cheese" evening but it's on my list! ;)

Excellent range of ales. Plenty of the Landlords own Tileys brew and a wide selection of local ish guest ales. No music just good ale in a very nice place. And great entertainment if you sit in the window watching the dodgy parallel parking 😊

great beer! even found one my non beer drinking wife liked. the cheese boards and pork pies are amazing definitely have them if you visit. the place is quirky lots of old building features plenty of seating, log burners, table top skittes and a game called shove. the staff were welcoming and helpful and if your passing pick up a news letter they have great events going on from live music to cheese and beer tasting to beer school with FREE BEER! Very recommended pop on for a pint or two and don't forget the cheese.
