The Butcher's Block Pub & Restaurant in Tonbridge and Malling

Very disappointing visit steaks undercooked, and some returned. Poor slow service. In general everything was wrong.

We had a family joint birthday meal here on Saturday night, the steaks were sent back as blue not medium rare. We preordered for 5:30pm and food didn’t arrive until an hour later, and then they forgot 1 of the 2 preordered starters! Drinks ordered at bar as no waitress, and when we did order didn’t arrive! Half of the steaks were not eaten as under cooked and full of gristle. I was embarrassed that we chose to eat here as it was shambolic. To top it off as a way of an apology they took £50 off and didn’t add a service charges. If you are reading this and thinking of booking a table for very over priced steaks that are not cooked to your preference (only to medium rare) don’t, go elsewhere, with better parking, staff with personality!

Enjoyed a wonderful birthday meal . Scallop starter , Chateaubriand for 2 main , wonderful Cherry cheesecake and strawberry tart dessert . All absolutely perfect from start to finish . Friendly , attentive polite staff . A really nice evening .

Lovely food in a very lively pub. Service was excellent too. Out of the way but well worth it.

Excellent menu, varied with local produce, incredible steak selection. When the food arrived i knew I’d be full, good portions & so fresh. Comfy setting, great carpark and wonderfully dog friendly. A fantastic find.

Extremely disappointed and compared to previous visits the food was no where near as good with smaller portions and selection. Waited a long time for our food and drink to be served, and it wasn't all served at once. Eventually when the food came it wasn’t that hot and one dish was returned as it was cold.. The waitress was friendly, but overall wasn’t impressed and won’t be returning. The lock on the men’s toilet also missing/broke. In all honesty for what we paid, it was very poor.

We all had roasts, including the sharing roast which was unreal. We also had an extra side of cauliflower cheese that was delicious! Could not fault the food at all. Unfortunately the service was slow and it was also very hot in the restaurant. We had a to wait quite a while to pay and this was annoying as our toddler was tired and we wanted to leave.

My steak was over, my wife's was under. Service was slow and poor. First time here, so maybe unlucky. Not beating a path back here, which is annoying as just a couple of miles from home!

I came to The Butcher's Block for Sunday lunch due to the great reviews the pub had received on Google. My partner and I were greeted politely and, even though we arrived early, a table was found for us straightaway. Our waitress was very friendly and the menu had a good variety of options; we had a chicken and a lamb roast respectively. I am quite fussy about how my roast potatoes are cooked and I felt that they were perhaps a little overdone, as were the Yorkshire puddings, but they were still very tasty with the addition of some excellent gravy. The vegetables were perfect, as was the stuffing. We also had desserts (cheese for my partner and my favourite part of the meal, the Aperol Chocolate Torte with Thyme Ice Cream - an absolute revelation!) All in all, we enjoyed our experience and would return to The Butcher's Block in the future.

Very disappointed run out of steak & burgers ! My family visited for Sunday afternoon and upon arriving we were told you had no steaks. Considering you are known as a steak restaurant and we were all expecting steak we were flabbergasted! Upon ordering we were then told you had run out of burgers !! There were two choices for desert plus cheese & biscuits but by the time we ordered there was only one choice ! I have messaged you over a week ago but no one has bothered to respond .. 😡😡

First visit, heard really good things, and it livid up to the reputation. Food was beautfill. The wine we had was excellent but as a ale drinker the variety on tap was limited. Will certainly go again.

After a while since last visiting the Butchers Block. We returned to celebrate our wedding anniversary. I am afraid to say we were disappointed with the starters which were cold and the mains not up to standard. Plates stone cold food luke warm. No accompaniment ie mustard etc was requested we had to ask after food was left for some time to attract waiting staff who were extremely busy which we patiently waited. On the whole for the money disappointing. Volume of noise was so loud no conversation between my husband and myself. Whilst understand small restaurant but a lot of tables resulting in everyone shouting to converse over each other. Could not hear waitress talking to us. Bearing in mind in the past we have had a great meal. This was not and we left to the dismay and probably will not return in the future..

We looked online at their menu and was happy to find something for us both. We were shown to our table and the menu did not show the items on their website. Not being able to find anything else we left after our first drink and went elsewhere. We were looking for a last minute special occasion meal but sadly did not find it here.

I have dined at the Butcher’s Block on several occasions in the past, although not recently. The quality of both the food and service has consistently been commendable, but I must say that they have truly elevated their offerings since my previous visit. Their A La Carte menu now features a selection of exquisite dishes made from locally sourced ingredients, expertly prepared to perfection and served with exceptional attention. The ambiance of the place was delightful, and although it is probably now considered a high-end dining venue, the adage "you get what you pay for" undoubtedly rings true in this case. Our experience was thoroughly enjoyable, and I wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant for a memorable dining experience.

Location down a little lane in a village and if you own a range rover then not for the faint hearted as parking out the back is difficult (tight) is a really nice gastro pub (restaurant). The wine list is extensive and reasonable, the service is always great, and the food is excellent. The place is best known for its steaks (of which the choices are vast) but I have tried most of the offerings over the years and have never been disappointed. Highly recommend giving it a trial.

We celebrated my parents Diamond wedding anniversary today, it was our first time it was amazing. The service was above and beyond the waitress was lovely. The food was out of this world lovely flavours and taste. Would like to tank the chef’s for such lovely food and would recommend the restaurant pub. We will be back next time we are down from Worcester thank you again.

Four of us had a fantastic Sunday lunch. Whilst my ribeye steak was exceptionally good and another in the party enjoyed their steak and ale pie, we definitely had a bit of food envy when the roast dinners came out. From starters through to the one person that managed dessert, none of the food disappointed. Added to this, the staff were all very friendly and attentive. It was our first time there, but it won’t be our last.

The BEST roast dinner I’ve had in a long time!! Had the chicken and beef for the 2 meat roast and it did not disappoint!! The restaurant had a really cozy vibe to it that feels like a traditional pub and still feels clean and warm. The staff were brilliant! Quick service and very helpful. Had 2 roast dinners with 2 meats, a drink each and 3 scoops of ice cream which came to around £80. With what you’re getting and what it tastes like the food is definitely worth the price! Parking is tricky! Depending on when you go, I had to park down a side road and walk but the weather was nice for the walk. Definitely recommend this place!

I am very disappointed, don't get me wrong food was lovely but we viewed the menu on the website for the past month and really wanted to try the scallops and Wellington which is why we decided to visit just to be told the menu on the website is old and hasn't been updated which made us very disappointed, keep your menu updated!

Great food, great service dining room is a bit cramped and can get noisy when busy. Overall, it is a great place to go and highly recommended 👌

Went here for my birthday, stupidly went on a Sunday and it's pretty much only roast dinners served. Veg was a slim selection of roast potatoes, some luke warm slop which I believe was meant to be sweet potato mash and some over herbed, over cooked carrots, think an attempt had been made to roast them but they were soft. The best work to describe the veg selection is beige. The meat was OK, maybe I had set my expectations too high based on friends experiences and the price of the dishes, I might give it another try but on a week day so I can try the a different meal. I have definitely had better roasts at other local pubs with a better veg selection. As for the service, except from the bar maid, it was also the same as you'd get from using Weatherspoons table service, the food came out, plonked down and the waiter was gone.

The food is unreal here, 10/10 every time. Definitely recommend any of the desserts as well as they’re all 10/10 also.

Visited for a birthday celebration. First class service. First class food. The two young people that attended our table were brilliant. Would recommend without a moments hesitation and will certainly be going again.

All been said before but the hype is real, this is a fantastic restaurant pub, the beef is wonderful and the rest of the well chosen menu is delicious. Staff are welcoming, attentive and friendly, the wine list very, very good, the bar comprehensive and the offer of restaurant, bar or patio tables perfect for each occasion, the current lunch menu offer is excellent value too.

Very busy friendly place, with good food & plenty of parking. Not many rivals around here in terms of VFM.

We had the best roast dinner here today for a birthday celebration. The quality of the produce was amazing, the staff were kind and attentive, the wine was delicious and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. We can’t wait to come again. Verity x

Biggest Sunday Lunch You Ever Did See!! Haven’t dined here since before lockdown but it didn’t disappoint! Thoroughly enjoyed our roast dinner here on Sunday 9.7.2023. I opted for the pork burnt ends croquette starter, which I shared and was a great portion size and wonderful combination. I chose the lamb and beef Sunday lunch, and OMG the portions are massive... it did defeat me! Delicious flavours, crispy roast potatoes and the cauliflower cheese was divine! It’s up there with one of the best roast dinners I’ve eaten in Kent! Didn’t make it to dessert, but defiantly next time! Great customer service and cute location in a hidden gem of an area in Kent. Parking can be tight, but they do have their own carpark at the back. We managed to park on the main street outside with no issue at 2pm on a Sunday. Highly recommend 5* and look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.

What a great little pub. Stopped in while in the area for a light lunch and the confit scotch eggs were out of this world! If we can find any way to come out for dinner, wouldn’t give a second thought to returning to try their main menu!

Sorry but i did not have a nice experience on Sunday 31st March..When I ordered my Roast Pork dinner and looked forward to enjoying a lovely roast!.. I was NOT asked if i was allergic to anything 😔.. So i was unable to eat it, why would you cover a roast dinner in garlic ??

We were a group of 6 dining for a 40th birthday on a Saturday evening. Once seated we were told a couple of dishes were unavailable and also that there were no triple cooked chips for the steaks. This felt strange for a busy Saturday. We ordered sharing nibbles and all ordered steaks. The nibbles arrived in a few minutes. We then had to wait 90 minutes for our mains to arrive. On arrival a couple of steaks were not even warm, new potatoes were hard and just generally all our meals were just under par. It feels like this restaurant is taking its good reputation for granted and serving up sub standard service and food with an air of arrogance. We had been looking forward to dining at the butchers block and had heard such positive things, but there are better steaks and better atmospheres in the area. In summary the food and service are not worth the price tag.

Great place. The food and meat were superb. Started with a couple of sharing starters, and the nice surprise was the halloumi. We finished with 2 beautiful sweets.

Absolutely beautiful food once again, is a little loud but that's due to low ceilings but again most places are loud. The taste makes up for all that so dismiss it for that reason.

Great date night meal. The chateaubriand was perfect. The red wine jus could have been warmer. But it didn't spoil a thing. Erin our waitress was attentive and we will book again. We attended at 17:30 and the restaurant was nice and quiet.

The best Roast dinner I have ever had at a restaurant. Better than home cooked. I don't say that lightly, I'm proud of my Sunday roasts but Butchers Block is another level ands gives you an amazing balance of culinary delight cross home cooked cuisine. The chicken roast... so highly recommended.

Parking is busy, but managed to park up the end of the road and around the corner very nice roast dinner Only downside as always and everywhere the roast spuds 😬

We went here as a birthday meal with friends. We have been a few times before and always received good quality food and service . Unfortunately this was not the case this time . The food quality was poor and rather bland ( not up to its previous standards) and also extremely expensive.

We visited here a few years ago and have wanted to go back ever since! We decided to treat ourselves for valentines day and were not disappointed. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The food was amazing!

Lovely fresh Sunday roast, well presented

After reading some great reviews, I was excited to go here for my 30th birthday, but was left higely underwhelmed. There was over an hour between starters finishing and mains arriving. Its very cramped and too busy making it an uncomfortable area to enjoy. I ended up telling our server/manager, politely, that i felt the wait was unacceptable and they pushed back and asked exactly how long this took and wanted specifics before they would even think about accepting it happeend. They basically argued that my point was invalid and I should be happy to wait this long. Also yeah the food is ok, but nothing special at all. Overpriced and underwhelming. I wouldn't bother. It ruined my 30th birthday and I can't get that back now.

Wow what an awesome food joint! Went with friends and we all had something different, roasts, burger and pie and all were delicious!!! We all said we will return to try more of the menu!

My friends and I had a table booked for 7 of us to celebrate 2 of our parties birthdays. As soon as I walked in I noticed the place had a lovely, old village pub feel. After confirming we were there for a dinner reservation we were led through to a lovely slightly more modern looking dining area that continued with the welcoming atmosphere. Our main waitress was Debora (apologies if the name spelling is incorrect) who was friendly and talked us through the different meats that were curing in house, but all of the waitress' and bar staff were efficient and professional. The food was stupendous! Everyone enjoyed all of their dishes stating the flavours were fantastic and the meat dishes were also of an impressive size with absolutely amazing flavours. It didn't end there though as the deserts were also exceptional. I can highly recommend the 'From the Woods' dessert but I won't say anything else as I don't want to spoil the surprise. Luckily we are local so I looking forward to going back again soon.

We were there on a Saturday for my birthday. The restaurant was nearly empty - there were two other tables, one of which had 2 people on it and the other had about 12 people. We waited over 45 minutes for two simple starters - flatbread and a Scotch egg. By the time they arrived, our baby was getting cranky and we had to rush through our main. The steak that we ordered was admittedly very well cooked, but rushing through it because of the late starters spoiled it. The chips were entirely forgettable - just not very tasty. Also we wanted the t-bone steak to share and were disappointed that the necessary prep work had not been done to serve it to us. Two stars may sound harsh but I expect better than to have to chase up my own starters at such an expensive restaurant. I'll add that the other tables did not wait so much.

Been here once before and it was lovely but last night wasn't good at all. We arrived at 650pm and didn't get starter until 750pm which was £30 for 2 scallops each! Then had chateaubriand for 2 for £85 which arrived about half an hour after the starter. Steak ok but the triple cooked chips must have been cooked four or five times as they were more like giant crisps. Ordered a bottle of wine at the beginning but in 2 hours of being there wasn't asked if we was ok for drinks. Total of £171 for a meal for 2 without any desserts defo wasn't worth that at all.

Have visited restaurant on Wednesday. It was very busy and loud. Most of the time it was hard to hear each other. Our starters ( mushroom consommé, scallops and scotch egg) were of outstanding quality. Truly delicious. For the main we had risotto, duck and one of the steaks to share Chateaubriand at £85. The duck and risotto were really nice. However, the steak wasn’t the best. For that price I would expect it to be brought to the table and be cut in front of us, be gentle and luxurious. It was ok, but nothing special to grant this price. They had a good selection of wines. However, both bottles we have ordered weren’t opened in front of us. Overall, I would definitely recommend for the the other food, but not the steaks

My wife booked this pub for my 50th Birthday, I had heard good things about the Burham branch, and I wasn't disappointed. There is a small carpark located at the rear for patrons, and the pub itself its very snug and cosy, good for couples as well as families. There is a varied menu, which is available online to download and view before arrival, with a good selection of food available, as well as kids menu. I opted for the Rib-eye, I was asked how I wanted it cooked, and boy, it was cooked to perfection, tender and gorgeous, lovely peppercorn sauce, peas, and chunky chips (the only weak link sorry, bit undercooked) My wife had the Kent Roasted Leg of Lamb, she was waxing lyrical about it, her eyes were glazed over, although that could have been the Chapeldown? Both kids had Chicken Goujons and they were more than happy, decent portion size. My youngest tried my steak and said it was awesome and could she have one?? er, NO! We only had 2 takers for desserts, both opted for kids Merengue with ice-cream and strawberries, they enjoyed it but thought the meringue pieces were a bit sparse. I whole heartedly recommend The Butchers Block, worth every penny, other than the chips, it was faultless, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, thoroughly enjoyable experience, makes you want to return and have another steak.

Our first time after being recommended by family who live locally. Very buzzy atmosphere which was good. Service a bit patchy but they were very busy and it didn’t spoil the evening. Now to the food , starter of lobster bisque was very tasty but a very small portion for the price , for main we had fillet steak which was cooked to perfection but someone in the kitchen is too heavy handed with the salt. It overtook the other delicious flavours and we left only tasting excess of salt which was a shame We will try again though

I couldn’t believe some of the 1* reviews I have read on here, and I was right not to believe them, We visited on Sunday and was greeted by happy faces which is always a good start, the food was absolutely to die for and the Champagne went down a treat! I would highly recommend this to friends and family and I will be returning this Sunday if I can get a table!! 👌👌😋😋

Lovely quality 3 course meal. Food tasted and was presented to a high standard. The Venison was sublime!

After being to the Butcher's Block several times recently after a mediocre experience a few years back I can say it is really very good now. They have a great selection of beers on draft, including local breweries, and very nice cocktail menu too. Food has generally been excellent. My one gripe from my most recent experience would be that the steak and ale pie crust does not need such heavy handed extra salting given the pie contains Stilton, which is a fairly salty cheese. But minor point in an otherwise nice meal. Really is great to see a local independent pub with such a great atmosphere and food. Kudos to the Butcher's Block!

Lovely evening celebrating my sons 50th birthday with my family on 21st September. Food lovely, complements to the chef! Staff lovely, checking all OK despite being very busy. Nothing to much trouble for them. My 2nd visit and will be visiting again

We went for an anniversary meal and I took my husband here mainly due to a friend recommending the steak! Lovely pub situated in a scenic area! I would say it’s better to park a bit down the road from the pub if you do struggle to get your car in their car park! My husband went for a fillet with garlic butter and said that it was the best steak he has ever had! The triple cooked chips were a let down. We also indulged in the desserts which were amazing. I had the peanut parfait and my husband had the affogato which we both thoroughly enjoyed. The presentation of the desserts were great. We would definitely come back.

Went for lunch in the pub with our dog. Very friendly helpful young lady serving. Quite quiet as it was a Friday lunchtime. Could have eaten most of the menu but had scallops and halloumi for starters, pie of the day and pork belly for main. All the food and drink was amazing, service was excellent. Planning a return trip one evening to enjoy more of the menu! Since been back for an evening meal and everything was excellent again. Sirloin steak was amazing!

What can I say. This place is amazing. Food is 100% top notch. Yer a little pricey but totally worth it. Visited on Friday 18/08/23. All staff members are very friendly and welcoming.

A hidden gem that we came across whilst out on a walk. I bet the locals hate having to share this quaint little village pub with those passing through. It's been brought right up to date as opposed to your typical kent village pub, but it's still kept some aged character. There is also a lovely garden and also parking. We only stopped for a drink, but the food looks good from an experimental chef and kitchen staff.

We're so glad we found this place for our anniversary. The food was divine and the service was brilliant. Could not fault it.

Booked a table for Sunday lunch. Easy to find, get there early in order to get into the carpark as very small. But plenty of parking further out. I had the roast lamb cooked pink but very nice plenty of flavour. Hubbie had the roast lamb & mint pie he had a choice of mash or roast potatoes, roasties won hands down, fluffy inside crispy outside, nice selection of veggies & extra gravy. Staff lovely nothing too much trouble. Restaurant really nice. Prices really good & well worth a visit.

Never had a bad meal here. Excellent Sunday lunch with the shared platter for our main course.

My food was very good, but my wife's meal was poor, we had a very long before our main course arrived, the restaurant did not appear to be busy. Waitress was helpful and pleasant.

This is a little gem of a place. Was recommended by a friend and would definitely recommend it myself. Tucked away in a village did not expect to see it there. The views were amazing. The food was 10 out of 10. Will return even if it's for the cherry rice pudding!! The staff were polite, friendly and helpful. The owners were really friendly and wish them luck with their new venture. 😊

Fantastic Sunday lunch. Also went during the week for a birthday and food equally as good, steaks tender and juicy and side order of cauliflower cheese (excellent as cauliflower cooked thoroughly with a creamy cheese sauce).

First time visitor. Absolutely superb food. Should be mitchellen starred. Staff were excellent.Immaculately clean and tidy. A must for any foodie. Yes expensive but so worth it. Will definitely be going back.

We have eaten in so many fabulous restaurants and cruise ships but i can honestly say tonight's meal was one of the best we have ever eaten the service from the young gentleman taking our order who was so professional and informative on the dishes to the whole experience start to finish was exceptional thank you for a fantastic evening xx

I dont normally share my experience but had to say. Great roast dinner. Dessert to die for. You will not be disappointed.

Waiting one HR before order was taken , food not great, service poor, got the bill wrong.

Unfortunately we were place in the bar and on a Friday night it for very loud. Starters was great but £32 steak was over cooked and dry. Service wasn’t great as they were busy serving drinks at the bar. Overall experience we won’t be rushing back.

We had a lovely meal at The Butcher's Block. My wife had the roast beef and it was incredible, plenty of food and a nice selection of vegetables too. My son and I had the fillet steaks and they were full of flavour and nicely cooked. A great selection of wines and lovely, friendly staff. It was a very popular place and parking can be an issue. We parked on the road leading up to the restaurant rather than trying to get in behind the pub, that was much easier!

Had a fantastic Sunday roast here. We book easily online for a table for 2 at 12.30pm. The food was fantastic and the beef was so tender. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bar and restaurant was very clean and tidy. It was the 1st we have been here and will be coming back.

A real jewel, great for steak lovers of course and there are choices aplenty. If steak is not for you there is plenty more on the menu, I plumbed for fish and chips and got a large chunky piece with great batter, huge chips and home made mushy peas which had a great taste. I couldn't finish mine so no problem with portion sizes. Our waitress was polite and knew the menu. The pub itself was nicely decorated for Christmas and was nearly full so definitely book as you may be disappointed. The pub has its own car park and a nice outside area to sit when the weather is better. Easy to recommend this gastro pub

Went here last weekend and couldn't fault the service and food. Small eating area inside which can get noisy when busy but that would be my only downside but worth it for the food.
