Me and my family came here for my birthday for Sunday dinner, the food was fantastic! Generous portion sizes, a variety of vegetables, brilliant quality and cooked perfectly. The staff were brilliant and very accommodating they made me feel special, they gave me the birthday hat and glasses to wear, a birthday card and birthday drinks. The gentleman owner was hilarious making some jokes.

We stopped here on the off chance that we could order a roast dinner. The restaurant was fully booked, but we could sit outside. We decided to do this as it was a nice day. We ordered 2 roast beef dinners. When they came I thought we'd been given child's portions. 2 tiny roast potatoes each 1 slice of beef a decent sized yorkshire pudding and a handful of veg. All cooked well, just not enough of it. The worst thing was as we were leaving we walked past another table where the people also had roast dinners. I counted 5 roast potatoes on their plates. We won't be going there again!

We had a lovely lunch and kind, friendly service from our waitress. The pub and restaurant is so clean and well cared for and it sets up expectations of a good experience, which did not disappoint. I was entrusted to find an old English pub serving traditional English food for a group of friends from around the world meeting up after a long absence. I chose the Butcher's Arms and none of us were disappointed. We were warmly greeted and shown to our large table. Our drinks order soon arrived. We were amazed by the long list of dishes to choose from and made our selection. We didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive and all was freshly prepared, well-cooked, and beautifully presented. Our Australian friend especially enjoyed his Cumberland 'bangers & mash', my Salmon and Prawn Salad, made to order, was delicious, and the tasty Steak and Kidney Suet Pudding was a real treat for another friend. We all had desserts, including one cheese board - my cheesecake was a sweet treat. The staff were friendly and efficient and made our reunion even more special. Come and try it for yourselves!

Food was not good, and we waited a long time for it. Chips tasted ‘old’, frozen veg very hard, liver mushy and not edible. Steak and burgers looked ‘broiled’ as no searing at all. Requests for no ice in drinks was not accommodated. Poor show all round

Late decision to go for Sunday lunch. Managed to fit 2 of us in, which was very accommodating. Very friendly staff and very attentive. Just returned home from a visit to The Butcher's Arms for Sunday lunch. The food was very nice, but the welcome from the Landlord not nice at all. When my husband & myself arrived there wasn't any staff around to show us which table we were to be sitting at. I walked up to the bar, which was next to the restaurant & the landlord was sitting at the bar. No hello or anything from him, he pointed to my little dog & said "He's not going in the restaurant!!! ). I replied to him that we had no intention of eating in the restaurant, we did indeed have a table booked in the bar area. No word of sorry from him, just a smug grin of embarrassment. The food & staff were very good. Shame about the frosty welcome.

We visited the butchers arms for a family Sunday roast today and had the worst experience. The roast was pretty much inedible the “roast sirloin of beef” was grey and cold! The veg was wilted and undercooked. The roast potatoes were grease filled and over cooked! Yorkshire pudding was not homemade when we complained to the manager he was nothing more then aggressive and rude! He suggested that this was not the establishment for us?!? He refused to refund us and his bar maids were disgustingly rude and were laughing at me and when I tried to explain that none of us had eaten our dinner. We spent £120 on food and I have never been so insulted in my life and when he finally agreed to give me a refund he threw the money at me! Put it this way I will not be returning. Leaving this post to warn others of the terrible roast at the butchers arms and the horrific customer service! What ever happened to the customer is always right.

1st visit for Sunday lunch, waiting staff lovely, service quick, eating area in pub was nice. Food was awful, we had beef Sunday roast abd nut roast Sunday roast. Meat was full of fat and very chewy, roast pototes very dry, cold and tasteless. Nut roast was very dry and pototes dry, cold. A lot of the food tasted as it has been microwaved. It's a shame this is the 1st time we have visited and definetely will be the last visit. We skipped dessert due to the poor mains, did not want to take the risk. It's a shame as the waiting staff are lovely.

Friendly staff and sweet country pub but very average food. I really wanted to enjoy the food as the staff were pleasant and helpful, but the Sunday roast was really not great, shop bought Yorkshire puddings, packet crackling, over cooked dry slices of pork, the sprouts were good though. I had whitebait to start which was so over fried in thick batter that it was almost soggy. Such a shame, hopefully it was just an off day.

I know people that have visited this pub and all of them have said how nice it is and has good traditional pub grub. So today myself with hubby and sister in law and her hubby went to find out for ourselves. The pub is in a nice countryside location not far from the village of Barnston or Chelmsford. A nice bright and airy interior and friendly staff to greet you. The food was excellent, I can recommend their Roast Beef with all the trimmings, same goes for the Roast Lamb, in fact our meals were all tasty and plenty of it, reasonably priced. Unfortunately this visit we didn't get to try the desserts as we were full, so next time will forego a starter in favour of a desert I think. There is plenty of seating both in and outside and a good play area for youngster as well. This will be on our list of pubs to take friends and family to, and would recommend it for sure.

I bravely chose the soup of the day for my lunch with friends. It was carrot and coriander. This is not a tricky soup to make. If the worst comes to the worst you can rip open a Covent Garden version, heat it up, and swirl in a blob of cream. Job done. The soup I had managed to fail on all 3 counts. It didn’t taste of carrot or coriander, and most certainly wasn’t soup but a kind of gloopy orange porridge. The accompanying bread was the best part. Also, after only one spoonful of the turgid mess, the bottom of the bowl was visible. It was gloop in a tea cup.

We had a really friendly welcome , found us a good table with a nice cool breeze from open patio doors.great advice on the menu and the food lived up to the promise as well!!! Thanks for a great evening we will be back.

Visited for lunch, there was one very friendly staff member who welcomed us warmly & was very efficient. The Pub is nicely decorated in white and grey with very comfortable seating (though a tad too low for the tables). There is seating outside in attached garden where dogs on leads are allowed.

I took my family out for Sunday lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the new look and feel of this pub. I used to visit this venue some years ago and this visit was a pleasant surprise. Under new ownership, well cared for and a pleasure to enjoy the food.

Met family for dinner and was surprised to find the restaurant fairly empty, ordered our food having skipped the starters and had quite a wait for our food to arrive. The bar waitress was very friendly and helpful and the food I would consider as average, mainly two skinny burgers and a special burger. On the other hand the ribs were a decent size and quite tasty.

Had lunch today from the specials menu with parents; £11.95 per person. My choice was whitebait, a generous portion served with salad, dressing and tartare sauce. Fish pie followed with seasonal veg. Again, great dish, with no skimping on the prawns either. Perfectly cooked, crispy cheese topping. Dessert, a fantastic double chocolate gateaux with cream. Often an afterthought, desserts can disappoint but not today!

Was passing and decided to call in as we were feeling a bit hungry. It was last Sunday so had the roast dinner. We both had the beef, it was cooked perfect. loads of veg, all cooked good, 2 Yorkshires they could have been crisped up a bit more, plenty of tasty gravy. Deserts were the crumble, very pleasing. All the meals were of a plentiful size. See other meals passing while seated, they all looked very appetizing and the fish and chips is going to be our next meal as it caught my eyes.

We've been local to this pub for many years but haven't been in very often in the past few years since there have been several change of ownership. Went in this evening for an impromptu dinner and what a treat.

We came here for my birthday this year based on the menu we saw online and the fact that we’d come here last year and always meant to make it back. I called earlier in the day to check regarding children’s menu and a gluten free menu and was told not to worry as all food is made fresh and there was usually as a minimum a burger and fish a chips that fulfilled this. I enquired whether I had to make a booking for this afternoon and was told to just come down. How I wish We didn’t bother and chose somewhere Else. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived and for a fair duration after, and was told that even though they opened at 5 they wouldn’t take a food order until 6pm. Which is of course fine, so we had ample time to prepare our order and was ready to order as soon as they were ready to take it! We the proceeded to wait 55 minutes before even a peek of food turned up and only because we had asked how long it would be after 45 minutes and again after nearly an hour. When the food came it was luke warm at best, so cold for other diners that it got sent back for a quick dunk back in some oil. Fish was so bland and watery, and the peas came in their own little bowl of water which was nice, nearly as nice as the 4 hairs that we found across the meals, naturally half way through the meal but we darent send anything back with 4 starving children and a very strong Will to get the hell out of there. Please- save yourself the pain of this place and go somewhere Else.

On a funny note. Never have I ever experienced such a speedy service. Ordered a small breakfast on 244. Promptly served. Had a bite, went to coffee machine for a brew. And the table was cleared already. Made my morning. 😂

We have visited the Crown and Thistle a number of times and always enjoyed it. Last night it really exceptional: all 5 of us chose different dishes and they were all absolutely delicious. We shared green beans, also fantasticly cooked to perfection. The service was superb and friendly. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

We stayed at the Cross Keys in Nov 2024, the restaurant was lovely, and the food was great. But the room was cold and very noisy. I took my husband for an overnight stay for his birthday, but we hardly slept all night due to the noise from the main road. Unfortunately, the room we stayed in was located at the front of the property and really needs double glazing installed, I would have got more sleep, sleeping in my car on the hard shoulder of the M25. The service also lacked, I had to ask for dessert, as the manager (who also kept singing all the way through service) was to busy looking on her laptop, arranging staff shifts for the following week. We were also told that the bar was closing early, around 20.15pm, I would assume to lack of punters drinking in the bar. I can't fault the food though this was very good, and we really enjoyed it, but the room well, this really lacked and needs to be used as storage only due to the road noise. Sorry but we won't be back.
