We came here for my birthday this year based on the menu we saw online and the fact that we’d come here last year and always meant to make it back. I called earlier in the day to check regarding children’s menu and a gluten free menu and was told not to worry as all food is made fresh and there was usually as a minimum a burger and fish a chips that fulfilled this. I enquired whether I had to make a booking for this afternoon and was told to just come down. How I wish We didn’t bother and chose somewhere Else. We were the only ones in the restaurant when we arrived and for a fair duration after, and was told that even though they opened at 5 they wouldn’t take a food order until 6pm. Which is of course fine, so we had ample time to prepare our order and was ready to order as soon as they were ready to take it! We the proceeded to wait 55 minutes before even a peek of food turned up and only because we had asked how long it would be after 45 minutes and again after nearly an hour. When the food came it was luke warm at best, so cold for other diners that it got sent back for a quick dunk back in some oil. Fish was so bland and watery, and the peas came in their own little bowl of water which was nice, nearly as nice as the 4 hairs that we found across the meals, naturally half way through the meal but we darent send anything back with 4 starving children and a very strong Will to get the hell out of there. Please- save yourself the pain of this place and go somewhere Else.

Visited Sunday evening with family of 8 adults. Service was poor from front of house. Really miserable, no greeting or smile from either of the 2 girls. Only 1 other family in there but they were getting ready to leave so we were then the only other customers. Most had roast which they said was nice apart from 1 who loves gravy but not their one! 1 asked for steak knife as beef was thickly sliced which they never got! My fish n chips was not how it was when i last visited back in October. Chips were frozen where before proper potatoes fried and the fish was watery and tasteless as were the peas so very disappointed!! I knew it was too good to last. Food was delivered by chief and no one came to see if we needed condiments, we had to go and ask along with napkins which really should have been on table ready for us instead of getting them once all food delivered, getting cold. The waitress was non existent and when I mentioned my food wasn’t very nice she didn’t apologise. The cooking of the food isn’t the problem it’s the quality.

The Black Horse is under new management and has been consistently good over the last couple of months I have been eating with friends and family, and also popping in for the odd drink. Last night's Pie Night was just delicious. Jamie, head-chef had made individual 'proper' pies that were simply exquisite. I had Steak & Ale, washed down with a pint of delicious guest ale "Seafarers". Others had "Salmon & Prawn" which again was a fully encased pie, served with a seafood velouté, apparently divine. A couple of weeks ago we were at the Black Horse for Sunday Lunch after attending the Remembrance in Chelmsford. Again it was a very well organised affair, served with smiles and just the right degree of attentiveness, and a tasty crown of roast beef with all the trimmings was enjoyed at a very reasonable £13.50. Paul, Jamie, Kelly and Paula are a great team. Don't hesitate, try it. You won't be disappointed.

Ignore every review on The Black Horse before October 2018. The pub is under new management and wow what a difference. Just had the best pub Sunday lunch for a very long time. Roast beef melts in your mouth and the marmalade glazed gammon an absolute delight. Followed up with as good a bread and butter pudding as Mum could make (SERIOUS!!) then that’s going to be a winner! Very reasonable. Staff are very accommodating, friendly and there when you need them. The wine selection is superb and very reasonable. An extremely passable Pinot Noir for £21.50. 👍 The Black Horse has, without doubt, had its issues. But under the new management of Paul and Mel and with a brilliant, very keen young chef in Jamie, you are on a winner. The Black Horse is now a must go to venue in White Roding. Couldn’t fault it today!!

Delighted to have our village pub back at last and above all, to see that it is actually open 6 days a week now! Jamie, the chef, is working really hard to provide good quality food and to come up with ideas for theme nights. It is also good to see the friendly owners, Paul and Mel, who are often there to see how things are going and to have a chat etc. They seem to be open to suggestions and the menu has already been adapted to cater for the needs of some of the regulars. I love the lunch-time sharing platter, which offers a choice of delicious items along with Ciabatta bread, salad and chutney. The curry nights are also good and a lot of effort went into preparations for recent theme nights such as the Sausage evening and the Hallowe'en barbecue. Have yet to try the Sunday lunch but they are already proving legendary! The ambience inside the pub is warm and welcoming but I feel that the outside is not well lit or signed adequately to suggest to passers-by that the pub is open! A shame, as I believe that many others, aside from the locals, would enjoy what the pub now has to offer. Perhaps one or two teething problems with staffing, but I am confident that they will be resolved over time and generally, the young staff who are in the process of being trained, have been excellent. I will definitely come back as often as I can.

Recently been taken over by new owners, the evening was very relaxed. Great welcoming staff in a very lovely country pub/restaurant. The food and service were both outstanding, we were both very happy with what we ordered. I had fish and chips and hubby had filet steak. Since the last review on this site dated 2012, this pub now classes itself as a Restaurant under new management, so three friends and I thought we would have dinner there last night. The interior is inviting, staff friendly to begin with and all was going well. There were a few other tables that had guests eating. When our starters arrived, two of us had ordered the Pigeon which was overcooked and therefore tough...we informed the waitress and she assured us she would inform the Chef. Our mains were fine. We were handed the dessert menu at 9,30pm and when we ordered at 9.40pm were informed that the kitchen may have closed. After checking we did receive our desserts, although the lemon posset which should have come with a biscuit, didn't, we were told they had run out of biscuits...there were a few more irritations....no ice bucket for the wine, we were not asked if we wanted a jug of water. They overcharged us on the bill, as we cancelled one dessert but when the bill was amended the 10% service charge which had been added was not amended and had to be taken off manually. When we finally paid, it transpired that the waitress had miscalculated the bill and told us we have underpaid. What had actually happened was that we had paid for our food and drink but had only paid £2 towards the £16 service charge. When we pointed out that the service charge was discretionary, she became quite aggressive and because of this and our other gripes, we decided not to increase the "tip", As you can imagine that did not go down well, so we left. This could be a very nice restaurant but they need to train their staff better and have a stern word with the Chef. Kitchen closed at 9.30pm.....really. Would add that when I called to make the reservation the Restaurant was closed, the ansaphone message stated that they were closed and would open on a date early in September....I went on 23rd November. It's little things like this that the public pick up on and need to be addressed. I will monitor reviews on this site and perhaps next year if things seem to be improving, will come back to see for myself!

I have been very ill over a few weeks, with poor appetite, and asked if it was possible to have a small portion of a dish. The waiter, understanding, thought it would not be a problem. However rather than been advise after consultation with the chef that it was not possible, the (presumed chef) thought it appropriate to come out of the kitchen to announce to diners that 'this loopy (or something similar) has just taken an order for 1/2 a cottage pie!!! I was so embarrassed, but feeling sorry for the lovely waiter, that when my friend suggested we leave, I declined. Today we travelled from London, on the way home, especially to visit the Black Horse as we had previously enjoyed good food here. But humiliation is not something I will pay for again. After having had our family hospitality business for over 50 years - he would not be someone I would want on my payroll!

Ir a casa.

With friends we attended for Sunday lunch. There was no draught beer. Apparently they are closed during the week for some kind of refurbishment and "it is not worth having draught beer". We ordered a bottle (ultimately two) of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It was warm. When I asked if they had a chilled bottle we were told "it has only just arrived". The service was very slow. The starters were reasonable. For a Sunday it was a little bit surprising there was only one choice of a roast meal - chicken - we were advised "not many people ask for a roast on a Sunday". Overall we consider that the main courses (in our opinion) were poor. Two of the party had roast potatoes and gave the impressive of being deep fried rather than roasted. The rib-eye steak was well!!!!!! In any event it was not eaten. At the end of the meal we queried the quality of the meal and the level of service. The manager/owner or whatever was quite rude and unpleasant. After threatening to call the police if we did not pay for the meals he did agree to deduct the cost fo the steak main course. I suggest this is a place to be avoided.

We went as a large group in February and for some unknown reason they were still serving the Christmas menu. My starter salad comprised of the leaves which you would get in a bag from the supermarket with no dressing and my Seabass arrived on a bed of overlooked stinking broccoli. The owners have done a beautiful job refurbishing the place but do not appear to have any experience of running a restaurant as they are clearly winging it! If we had not been with a group of acquaintances we would have walked out and refused to pay but instead decided to bite our tongues vowing never to return!

Booked a table for two on the day, we did arrive 15 minutes early, no specific table had been reserved, as we wanted a Sunday lunch we didn't have much choice as some tables suitable for two only had coffee style tables and there were two high tables which I wasn't keen to sit at, so we ended up on a larger table. I ordered the roast on offer which was described as roast pork with belly of pork when it came it was three pieces of pork belly as would be expected it was quite fatty,I would not have chosen this had I realised there was not a slice of roast pork with it. Before we ordered the fish special was rubbed off the board, my husband ordered the shepherds pie which was ok. The best bit of my meal was the excellent roast potatoes, which I shared with my husband as there were 7 of them!We each had a desert which were average. We were disappointed as the reviews had given us high expectations, the renovations to the building are very well done, however the service was slow and there did not seem to be anyone overseeing or in charge. We will not be returning. Ps the music was rather loud.

We recently moved to the area so were keen to try out our local, unfortunately we won't be returning often. Everything was basically "standard pub fare", so pretty poor. There were a couple of ales on tap, but these days its relatively easy to find good pubs showing off a range of good local beers, this is not one of those pubs.We stayed for dinner (we felt the need to at least give it a chance!), but didn't find anything more encouraging. Food was very much "average pub", deep fried items were heavy and a bit greasy. I had pulled pork in a bun, though it very much just cooked pork served with bbq sauce and uninteresting chips. It felt to me like the kind of place where the chef effectively sees it as his job to cook food, rather than having a passion for food and what he's serving.

This Pub has recently been reopened following a complete refurbishment with half of it turned into a house. The ambience was very pleasant, and Oak Beams abound, The Chef, and his apprentice seem to run the place, with Chef also doing front of house very attentively, even customers not eating seem to be served at their tables. I was there with my Wife and adult Daughter, They had homemade Veggie Burgers which they report were 'lovely', I had a steak, which I like rare, this was cooked to perfection. This was followed up by an ample cheese board for me, and Banoffee pie for my Daughter once again reported as delicious, and a doggy bag to take half of it home. We had a cracking evening there. £62, including drinks and wine for 3. But do ring first to ensure open.

We saw this pub in it's old form before the present owners. It was very run down. The new owners have redesigned the exterior and interior completely. Gone is the drab pub that was there, here is the new village local. Completely gutted and refurbished to look like the old village pub complete with real wood beams, a wood burner and in spite of being open for business for several months, looks like it's been there for years. The interior layout has a very warm and cosy feeling in the front bar which opens out to the rear to a higher ceiling, church pew seats at some tables and a simply lovely atmosphere that sadly, is lacking in many pubs today. There is a patio area to the rear and I'm told, a garden area further to the rear for children to play in safety. I was delighted to see a Doombar pump on the bar. The only downside to that is I was the designated driver so stuck with tonic water but won't be next time. We ordered garlic bread for four but next time will only order two between four as that will be plenty. Two had the fish and chips, one had the chicken and I had Belly of Pork. The portions were more than ample. We all agreed the food was cooked really nicely and presented well. Unfortunately, we were all too stuffed to attempt the puddings. The bar staff were very friendly, particularly the short lady with glasses who gave us some background to the pub itself. There is a car park we were able to get in to but when people realise what a little gem this place is, a good tip would be arrive early. Overall a really nice place to go for lunch and I would guess evening dinner too. Have had similar food in other places and paid considerably more than we paid here. Looking forward to going back and would Highly recommend.

Since June, my Wife and I have had several Saturday lunches at the Black Horse Inn. All have been most enjoyable and reasonably priced. Sometimes the serving of the meal may be seen as slow but this could be the result of the Chef’s attention to detail and the freshly cooked food.Today we each had three courses from the Christmas menu, plus wine, Irish coffee/Cappuccino, chocolate money and crackers, for a total cost of £43.48. All was superb and well served by the pleasant and efficient staff. The Black Horse Inn was revamped earlier this year with much attention to detail and attractive features, whilst retaining the atmosphere of a traditional pub. The assortment of different tables and chairs including some pews seems unique. The rear garden is completely non smoking (smokers, if they so wish, can use the area at the front of the Inn). The Black Horse Inn is easily found being on the left hand side of the A1060 from Sawbridgeworth, about 2 miles from Hatfield Heath and approximately 11 miles from Chelmsford. Some photos of the food and the surroundings are attached.

First visit since extensive renovation.Food is served from Midday until 7.00pm on Sunday. Seems they're shying away from the traditional Sunday roast which is actually quite refreshing. There's a lovely patio and garden area and the dining area is full of character. We arrived at about 3.30 and were warmly received. Sadly, my first choice of steak and ale pie had sold out but the beer-battered cod and chips was a more than adequate replacement. The portion was very generous and the chips to die for. My companion opted for ham, egg and chips and commented on the lovely flavour of the ham. The desserts board was very tempting but are stomachs were full! Prices are very reasonable.

I have been visiting this pub on and off since 1979 and have seen many owners come and go and, whilst I now live in Southampton, I was in the area and thought I would pop in. I was immediately impressed by the recent renovations, which were tastefully done and immediately brought a smile to my face. The place is privately owned and it is immediately clear that a lot of time and effort (not to mention money) has gone into the design and refurbishment. The owners were very likeable and were obviously proud of what they had done and were more than happy to show me around. Whilst I have not eaten here yet, I saw some of the food being served and knew that I would instantly like it. Unfortunately, I was on my way somewhere, but when I am next in the area with the family, this will be my first port of call.

Visited this newly refurbished pub a few weeks ago to be pleasantly surprised at the great atmosphere .Greeted at the bar by a very pleasant young girl who took our order and asked if we wanted to eat.We said we would and she showed us to a nice table in the rear of the pub with patio doors opening to a lovely courtyard garden. The menu was good with plenty of choice .We had Nachos to share and a homemade burger and the steak pie with veg both very nice. The pub has a very rustic feel and felt very friendly The cost of the meal and drinks was very reasonable and we have returned since .I will be returning soon with friends and will make this a regular haunt .Asking about the management I found that The Black Horse is run by the owners not a faceless chain so I hope the business continues to grow

On a funny note. Never have I ever experienced such a speedy service. Ordered a small breakfast on 244. Promptly served. Had a bite, went to coffee machine for a brew. And the table was cleared already. Made my morning. 😂

We have visited the Crown and Thistle a number of times and always enjoyed it. Last night it really exceptional: all 5 of us chose different dishes and they were all absolutely delicious. We shared green beans, also fantasticly cooked to perfection. The service was superb and friendly. We all thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

We stayed at the Cross Keys in Nov 2024, the restaurant was lovely, and the food was great. But the room was cold and very noisy. I took my husband for an overnight stay for his birthday, but we hardly slept all night due to the noise from the main road. Unfortunately, the room we stayed in was located at the front of the property and really needs double glazing installed, I would have got more sleep, sleeping in my car on the hard shoulder of the M25. The service also lacked, I had to ask for dessert, as the manager (who also kept singing all the way through service) was to busy looking on her laptop, arranging staff shifts for the following week. We were also told that the bar was closing early, around 20.15pm, I would assume to lack of punters drinking in the bar. I can't fault the food though this was very good, and we really enjoyed it, but the room well, this really lacked and needs to be used as storage only due to the road noise. Sorry but we won't be back.

Clean and tidy. Warm welcome. Good food and drink menu. Sadly we were kept awake till 4 am with music 🎶 coming from above. The sink in the en-suite did not have a plug
