Bit grotty inside but good music from Jane's band Tuesdays

Awful. The owner (a bigger bloke) was very aggressive towards younger customers , asking them very rudely for ID and them questioning multiple of them even after being ID’d. He lurks around tables with groups of people building alot of animosity and creating quite a negative atmosphere. Clearly underage staff serving on the bar, however, there service is good. Overall, owner is a very unkind and aggressive man while his employees seem hard at work.

Extremely disappointed with the new regime. Arrived at the bar to find a number of very young barstaff. When we were served we were asked TWICE what we wanted to drink. Then when we handed the young girl a £20 note she took it from us, put it in the till and walked away to continue to chat with one of the other barmaids. We had to regain her attention to request our change as our two drinks cost much less than the £20 note which we gave her. She reluctantly gave us our change but seemed unfazed by her appalling attitude and dreadful service. We sat down,drank our drinks and left to go to the Masters where both the service and ambiance are far superior. We shall not be visiting this pub again in a hurry!

Great local pub made us (passing travellers!) feel welcome and had fantastic local folk music on 1st Monday of month (and apparently an open mic on the Tuesday too).

Went to the Tuesday open mic 🎤 Great sound , and up close and personal room. Good venue which has managed to ride the storm of pub closures and thrive. We'll managed.

unfriendly. The draft beer wasn't on and the staff were grim. Can't imagine what tourists to Llandaff would make of it..

I go for open mic night on tues its a lovely friendly people and u can get involved if you want to.

Fabulous little pub in picturesque village. Made to feel very welcome owners really lovely. Food first class best fillet steak I've ever had melted in your mouth.

Good local pub, very busy. The pub looks tired and worn but still attracts lots of visitors. Near to the Cathedral so always good for a drink after long walk. They serve food which looked and smelt good, we didnt eat here today.

Visited this venue on the off chance for Sunday lunch . The food was well presented and really tasty . Would definitely recommend.

Traditional Welsh/British pub. Great selection of beers, considering the economic climate as well, good prices. Beer garden is a great suntrap. Currently 22° at 18:25 and I can feel the 'burn'

This used to be a lovely village pub but has been reduced to a shabby boozer with badly kept beer, and almost derelict toilet facilities. Urgently needs new owners and an upgrade. Won't be revisiting anytime soon.

Such welcoming friendly staff and atmosphere we held are mums wake hear and we all couldn't have been more pleased nothing was to much for them to do for us, the food was gorgeous thay catered for children,vegetarian and celiac i would 100%recommend this place.

Crowded and very lively..... But it WAS Christmas. Great range of drinks and friendly staff. Dog friendly. Nicely old fashioned.

I used to be a regular here many years ago. It's not changed much in terms of the decor! There was a rugby game on the TV that was very loud and intrusive. However, the drinks prices are very keen and other regulars appeared very happy there.

Sunday lunch Lamb, beef, chicken, pork, choice of desert. Small pub, quite busy, booking a table and time slot on a Sunday is advisable!

The out door seated arrangement is excellent and Nichola & Peter Padmore manage the facility very well indeed. I've eaten there only once but it was magnificent in its service and surroundings!!!

Sad to see it go so downhill. Half the beers were off, the drink we were served was not great and shut early because of lack of custom. Needs a good shake up.

Went for a drink before moving on to the next place. Ended up staying all night had such a great time the drinks are reasonably priced and bar staff very friendly. X

After lockdown difficulties the landlord and landlady Paddy and Nikki have worked hard to re-establish The Butcher's Arms as the go to place in Llandaff. The choice of drink is varied and the food is delicious. I would recommend. 👍

Fantastic food and great customer service

Good area for a pub however the drinks took 15 minutes for someone to even come and then a further 20 minutes to get the drinks so most of my table had sobered up. Poor service in general

Ok, but no signs of Social Distancing or anything else except hand sanitizers. Lovely staff very welcoming and the orange gin we had was beautiful.

They have a great back garden area with plenty of seating. We had a few pints and some nice food. The burger I had was excellent. The place is not upmarket but the food and beer was good and we enjoyed it. The staff were very helpful.

Lovely pub !!! Have had the Sunday lunch here many times, and it's always delicious. The staff are friendly and helpful. The landlord & landlady, are very sociable people and remember returning customers.

Muy decepcionado de que 'The Butchers' Arms 'Llandaff tuviera la mejilla para decirnos que había un' almuerzo vegetariano del domingo ', pero cuando llegó fue solo un plato de verduras: una pastinaca, algunas zanahorias, brócoli y coliflor, un yorkshire pudín y un poco de puré de papas. Ni siquiera una papa asada a la vista y ningún signo de salchicha vegetariana o cualquier tipo de sustituto de carne. ¡Y cobraron al menos 8 libras por él! ! ! ! ! ! Nunca antes había visto esto en un pub, al menos DIGA que no tiene un sustituto de carne en lugar de estafarnos y darnos un plato de verduras fangosas. No hay excusa para un espectáculo tan pobre hoy en día, hay una gran cantidad de opciones veganas / vegetarianas hoy en día, ¡ya no estamos en la década de 1980! ! ! Si quieres un buen almuerzo del domingo en Llandaff Village, ya sea vegetariano o carnívoro, ¡ve a THE BLACK LION! ! ! Mucho mejor valor! !

We just popped in on Saturday night. The atmosphere was hopping, singing along to Tom Jones and dancing!

Lovely in of Guinness, food was lovely Fish and chips £6 bargain , my mate had a chicken Burger, he said it was the best ever. Wales won against Fiji happy days. 12/10 fantastic

Buscando un lugar para ponernos al día con viejos amigos de la universidad, llamamos el lunes por la noche para reservar una mesa para las 12 del miércoles por la noche. Nos aconsejaron que no sirvan comida los miércoles por la noche, pero sugerimos que volviéramos a llamar por la mañana para hablar con el gerente, quien muy amablemente acordó traer al chef especialmente. Pub encantador, cómodo, relajado, buena selección de cervezas y buenos vinos de mesa, la comida era excelente, especialmente las pizzas hechas a mano y un valor increíble. Muchísimas gracias a todo el personal por ser tan servicial, cálido y acogedor. La noche fue genial de principio a fin. Definitivamente vamos a estar de vuelta.

This is a very good pub. The bar, if you can get a seat or squeeze in, has a very old school feel. There is a good selection of beers, ales and the rest on draft and in bottles. Prices are reasonable, depending on what you order but this isn't Spoons or Brains pricing for sure. Never eaten the food although it always looks decent. Behind the bar there is a larger seating area, in a slightly more modern style. Sports is shown here and some people eat in here too. On Saturday's there is music, often with a live singer. I have never quite figured out if this is Karaoke or not, but certainly quite a few people have a go! The quality of the music is actually pretty decent and it's a good place to end up if you are having a bit of a big one locally. Back garden is very nice for Summer drinks. Llandaff Village (where this pub is) actually has a decent amount of pubs for it's size, which is all of about 3 streets. The Butcher's Arms is by far the best. Brief Summary of the others, for context : Black Griffin - Brains Pub, weird interior, shows sports but the atmosphere is really poor. Even on a Welsh Rugby match day where everyone and their dog goes to the pub and has a jar, it's bad. Still, there are worse pubs. The Malsters - An enigma, it serves Spoons food at gastropub prices. I really don't understand how this business model works for them so I have concluded they must be a front. Feels like a pub attached to a hotel at a Motorway Services. Llandaff Institute - Very decent, can't drink there unless you are a member. They are desperate for members so probably just go and ask. The Heathcock - Probably the best restaurant in Cardiff and a very tidy little drinking bit too. Kind of sort of a pub but kind of sort of a soon to be Michelin starred eatery.

A small pub set in the picturesque area of Landaff cathedral and castle, while not primarily a food pub they do a very nice range of bar meals served in a cosy lounge or in the large beer garden at the rear.they have a good selection of beers and ale's all reasonable priced..

Rugby Saturday, England v Wales. Pub was packed, standing room only. Great idea to put a marquee in the beer garden with tv, heaters and a small bar. Atmosphere was great, everyone in good spirits, even before the result. Staff are always friendly and quick to serve, having 4 or 5 people behind the bar is a good idea. The Guinness was great! Everytime I go here, I have the Guinness. It's smooth, cold, creamy and absolutely spot on! Best pint of Guinness in Cardiff? Who knows, certainly the best I've had!!!

Decent prices, staff are seemingly well adjusted to the job and the atmosphere is great when sport is on.

My family booked here for an occasion. The food and drink was fantastic, the staff are genuinely friendly and very professional the smoking area is covered, toilets are checked regularly and clean. This place has all the 'little details' covered so the overall result is a resounding success. Definitely worth a visit you will not be disappointed.

Went for Xmas dinner on Wednesday evening. Had one of the best experience ever for a meal. Had a 2 course meal, had all the trimmings for Xmas meal. Everything was nice and fresh. Not the biggest, still it was delicious. The staff were very friendly, whole experience was just amazing.

A great pub, good staff, great landlady

Nice pub, nice staff, fair and varied beer selection. It's also been decorated since I was last there (early 2017), and that's made an incredible difference to how much brighter it is in there.

Spent a weekend in Cardiff for some rugby and stayed in a cottage in Llandaff and therefore visited the 3 pubs that Llandaff had to offer,.. This was the first of the 3 pubs visited and perhaps the reason for the review title. At this point, I was with my Australian buddy and he mentioned this first, so,.. This is a nice, clean, bright pub and probably the most intimate of the three visited. We stayed in the front area of the pub but the back area looked to have some good seating options for socialising and dining. Good selection of beers for a small pub and reasonably priced (unless you drank the Peroni). The welcome as we walked in was very friendly and welcoming. However, this did seem to change somewhat upon hearing my very English accent. As I said, I felt that I noticed this but it was my Australian buddy that raised this first, so he obviously noticed it too. The second round I purchased from a second very friendly member of staff seemed to suffer the same response. Don't get me wrong, the service was very professional and polite throughout, just seemed to lose a little of the initial friendliness. Now that's been dealt with, they were all very accommodating and even offered food off-menu, which is always nice to fill a certain craving. There was a TV to watch the sport and a loyal stream of regulars who came in and out which kept the energy levels high. I'd definitely go back and did for another two visits that weekend,.. the nice bright and intimate bar, good beer and good location was certainly enough to allay any mild prejudice that may, or may not have been there.
