The Butchers Arms in Neath Port Talbot

The food was delicious, everything was freshly cooked, big portions with so much flavour. We had the Italian chicken, fish and chips and soup. I must mention the cheesecake, it was so light and tasty. Left the pub with happy tummies 😊

A spontaneous lunch. Chose the Wednesday / Thursday sirloin steak for 2 deal. Couldn't fault a thing. Steak cooked to perfection, hot crunchy chips. Delicious pepper sauce to accompany the steak.

Been to the butchers a few times and every time the food has been delicious 🤤 the staff are lovely and if we needed anything we're happy to help! On my recent visit I had the burger and omg it was the best one I've tasted definitely recommend!!

Lovely local.Very friendly staff and locals .Was staying nearby for a week Saturday night visit. My husband is a real ale drinker. Preferably from pumps. So you can imagine his disappointment they had run out of ale .(No delivery till they opened again Wednesday). That's OK as they had bottled real ale. Guess what before the end of the evening that too had run out.!!!! NOT Everyone drinks LAGER.

Really lovely food and a very welcoming host. Steak deal was fantastic and the cheesecake was phenomenal

Had Sunday lunch, it's was absolutely delicious! Everything was so fresh. The pub is beautiful and comfortable and the staff can't do enough for you! We will definitely be going back!

Visited on a quiet lunchtime in the week. Wonderful food, good choice, and good portion sizes. Service was quick, and a very friendly atmosphere.

The Butchers used to be great. The last few visits have prompted me to rewrite my review. It seems like they are trading on their past reputation. We waited 40 minutes, in a half full restaurant to get dry meat, cold potatoes, rock hard Yorkshires and not enough gravy. The veg was fine and the serving staff were nice. There are other places nearby doing it right so I won't be back anytime soon.

Main meal was good,... starter lacked a touch of dressing on salad very bland.

The staff here are so lovely, always so welcoming and friendly. They do such a fantastic job on the floor. I came for food tonight with my partner and I just wanted to recognise the hard work they do. What a fantastic team they make 😊

Great staff, very attentive. There were 17 of us all eating & they brought out the food piping hot & together. Very impressed!!

Foods gone down hill 3 of us ordered steak all burnt. Very disappointing when I told the staff they told me it was char grilled. Never have I had a steak like that there they have always been fine and not burnt or char grilled. Waiter then cleared the table and didn’t offer us any desserts or any more drinks. It’s like they wanted up gone as we spoke up about the food being burnt. Then I see the chef come out if the kitchen with a pint no wonder the food was brunt he was half cut cooking it. Avoid.

Lovely Sunday lunch, quality beef, Yorkshire pudding, fab roast potatoes and roast parsnips. Cauliflower cheese was delicious and mash superb. Gravy excellent. Lovely setting and atmosphere. A really lovely, tasty meal.

It pains me to say this as we have dined here many times in the past but sadly will not be back if this is the standard of food they are happy to serve. I had prawn cocktail to start and it was dreadful. The 'sauce' wasn't a sauce at all but a gloopy concoction that just stayed on the spoon when I turned it upside down! The butter for the bread roll was presented on a paper napkin! Consequently the butter was absorbed into the napkin so when you tried to use it bits of black napkin became part of the butter. What sort of chef thinks that is a good idea? It's basic food knowledge which the chef clearly doesn't possess. My main was a ballantine of chicken which basically turned out to be chicken in cream, zero seasoning and not a hint of garlic, which should have been prevalent. In the past the menu used to be quite creative with tasty, flavoursome food but this is no longer the case. I don't know if they have changed the chef but the food is very uninspiring and bland. My sister had the vegan red pepper burger which was left as it was absolutely awful. We all tried it and it should never leave the kitchen. It's a vegan burger but they didn't even have vegan mayonnaise so it was incredibly dry to eat and extremely disappointing. How can a restaurant that claims to serve vegan food not have a basic ingredient like vegan mayonnaise? Very, very poor. It's a lovely pub with lovely staff but sadly the same can't be said for the food. Unless they address the standard of the food they serve and get a chef who takes pride in what they serve then unfortunately we will not be back. They seriously need to heed all the negative reviews they are getting and up their game, otherwise customers like us will just vote with our feet and go elsewhere. It cost me £120 for the three of us and it was a total waste of my hard earned money. It is so disappointing to see what was once a lovely restaurant go so downhill. They have pictures of Marco Pierre White on the wall of the restaurant, he would definitely not be happy to be associated with the standard of the food that is served here 😕

Sunday lunch simply outstanding all round. I had the three meats and had ample of all served with gorgeous roasted pots mash and Yorkshire (home made) accompanied by carrots, cabbage suede peas and cauliflower cheese (included). Couldn't fault anything. Shared a desert again top notch. Staff were efficient, polite and friendly. Best we have had for a long time.

Family occasion with pre booked buffet. Firstly a very cold room. Had to wear coats for an hour on arrival. The buffet wasn’t very child friendly even though there were a few children present. Unfriendly and unhelpful service when I asked for some plainer food for my daughter as the buffet was unsuitable for her. The lady at the bar said I’d have to order off the menu for an alternative when I’d already paid £15 p/h and my child ate nothing from the buffet table. I had to pick up food for her on the way home. It would have been nice if she could have been offered a simpler sandwich or a bowl of chips as a goodwill gesture. Cost £9 for two teas and a can of coke on one visit to the bar and a bit less the next time so that was odd as well. All in all we left with a bad taste in our mouths and not all due to the food. Won’t be returning. A simple and cheap gesture of a bowl of chips would have changed the experience and made us feel like we were customers instead of a nuisance.

First time here with my partner and j thoroughly enjoyed my experience. The ambiance of the place felt very welcoming as you'd expect in a Welsh establishment. With a roaring log fire and the chatter of the regulars it set the scene. The food was reasonably priced and the presentation was good for the food. The dish I ordered was as described and quite delicious. Fluffy soft and flaky white fish with gorgeous hand cut chips and mushy peas. Would definitely recommend for anyone especially for group bookings. You'll really enjoy your time there so get booking.

A warm friendly cosy atmosphere, and one of the best Sunday roasts I've had, tender beef, and proper gravy. Staff a credit to the owners highly recommended

Food exceptional so was the service, this may have been down to we were the only ones eating there at lunch time also it was cold there. Hence my rating.

No understanding of gluten free, poor options, one saying it was gluten free and the other saying it’s not. Our drinks never came, we had to keep asking. Food finally came and it was dreadful. Would not recommend.

The food is out of this world. Offers a different twist on eating. Just love it here and now they do pizza😋🤩

Visited The Butchers today for Sunday lunch in their outside Pod. Lisa the owner and Angel served us. The food was of a VERY high standard. Definitely worth the prices on their menu. Beautiful atmosphere , sunny day and anything we needed all we had to do was press the bell & we were greeted with a smile and nothing was too much for them. Highly recommend The Butchers, we have been for lunch there few times which was lovely, and now can highly recommend their Sunday lunch..the flavours in the food were gorgeous and the presentation 100% which is what you would find in a top class restaurant. Thank you Lisa & Angel for making our Sunday very special. We will see you soon .

Very nice place to eat, first time there for us and will definitely return

Really nice setting, very attentive pleasant staff. Unfortunately, the Sunday dinner was way below standard. Cauliflower cheese was a big floret of cauliflower sitting in a little puddle of sauce, virtually raw parsnips that were supposed to be honey glazed, if you like your mashed swede full of large irregular lumps it may be for you. Paid the extra £2 for lamb and had two slices. The dinner totally lacked any sense of care. I may have just visited on a bad day but I will not be going back to find out.

Cannot fault any part of their operation. Food and service absolutely A1. Menu is interesting and innovative. Staff are friendly and attentive but not fawning. I really like what they do and appreciate all they have done to provide some kind of normality in an incredibly difficult time. 10/10

We spent the morning clearing the house of a deceased family member and needed a pick up for the long journey home. The Welsh Rarebit was very disappointing - one slice with a bit of cheese for £8 something. Soup in a huge bowl that was all edge and a tiny bowl in the middle. Hardly life affirming stuff. Very sad.

As part of the mama Mia trip we called in en route back. Limited time there but it was a lovely hour spent on one of the select beaches on the island.

We celebrated my husbands 90th Birthday there recently. The food was plentiful, but not tasty. The soup came with a lump of butter but no roll. The service was fine, but we won’t be returning again.

Lovely meal, i had vouchers given to me so we could use them. Its expensive so we would only go for special ocations but food was really nice.

Good service, nice food and good atmosphere. Bit pricy and my beef pie was much too salty.

TLDR: Delicious food, a bit expensive though and some dishes very salty. Very cosy pub with a nice atmosphere. Service was great, we had an issue with our table not fitting our legs under and the waitress did her best to fix the issue. It was a bit pricy for the food we got, and we did mostly enjoy our dishes but the person who got the steak and guiness pie said it was so salty that it was off-putting. The chicken supreme was delicious but it would have been nice to know if there was a bone before we ordered.

Disappointing food. Gammon very chewy and salty. Trying to be something that it isn't. Bring back gammon and pineapple, not pineapple chutney. Do people in Alltwen really want gourmet food, or good hearty pub food.

Ate here Dec 2022. Unfortunately our meals did not meet expectations. Lasagne was dry and although it was homemade, it definitely had been frozen. That’s fine but for the price, it’s unacceptable. Ate a couple of mouthfuls but wasn’t enjoyable at all. This was omitted from final bill but will not be rebooking. A shame as the pub is lovely and the waitress Angel (I think was her name) was the so polite and friendly.

Booked for Sunday lunch after having a couple of previous meals that were fantastic. Sunday dinner didn't not disappoint. Plates hot. Potions plentiful, staff lovely and friendly, place was spotless, would recommend and will be definitely be booking again

What a great place to meet up with friends, have a bite to eat and a glass or two. Nice menu, well cooked, great quality, all the usual pub food and more. Staff were polite, attentive and generally lovely. I’ll go there again!

Outstanding food well worth the wait

First time Ive been to the Butchers Arms in approx 10 years , to me its always been known for its food , we tried it out last weekend and its still excellent , thankyou , we will return

Buchers Arms my daughter and I called one afternoon and ordered a meal the staff where very friendly good place to eat five star rating

Visited for food early evening with family and didn’t want main meal as not long eaten. I ordered a starte and asked if it could come same time as main meals. However when bill arrived the £8 bowl of nachos I had ordered had been charged at £18😳😳 when I queried this I was told that if they bring a starter same time as main they add on an an extra £10 which I was not told when ordering. If I knew I was paying £18 for a bowl of nachos I would definitely not of ordered this as it a ridiculous amount. Very,very misleading and terrible value for money!

We visited as a large group. Menu sounded lovely, although quite pricey. I ordered the sirloin with noodles which was £25. Disappointed when it arrived as I was unsure how to justify this meal for £25. My 3 year olds chicken goujons and chips arrived and as I cut in to the chicken, they were raw in the centre. The staff did handle the situation well and were apologetic and replaced it and also deducted it from our bill.

Service was great, food excellent, nice atmosphere. We would definitely visit again next time we are in the area.

Lovely food and friendly pub. They were happy to talk through special dietary needs and in the end had many gluten-free options. Great puddings too!

Have really enjoyed sit-down Sunday lunch for £14.50 on a number of occasions but today had a beef lunch takeaway for £13 and was extremely disappointed . Would highly recommend sit-down lunch but don't bother with takeaway .

Great atmosphere, cosy, Great food, attentive but not intrusive staff. As tourists they gave us honest, info on places to visit. A must if your in the area. Food very good prices average around £16 to £21 for specials board.

We visited The Butchers on the 16th of April for the first time for an evening meal. The food was absolutely beautiful, and the service was great, not a bad word to say about it. Unfortunately we were rather let down and appalled by the attitude of a member of staff, which I presumed was the manager, in the way she spoke towards another member of staff, openly in the bar area …utterly unprofessional. Other than that, great experience and highly recommended

Absolutely delicious roast beef lunch. I've never tasted beef like it. Vegetables were great, though perhaps too many but very tasty. Would love to go again when in the area. Definitely need to book and can understand why. Excellent.

Had another lovely meal here last night. Awesome burger and moules mariniere, both absolutely delicious. Highly recommend a visit.

Had my 60th birthday with my family at this fabulous gastro pub. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It’s the real deal in terms of quality of food, drink, ambience and service. Perfect location for a celebration or a quality afternoon/evening out !

It's a shame because the pub is stunning. Inside it was cosy and they have clearly worked hard on making it look welcoming and attractive. Parking was great, I certainly had my hopes up. Lots of good reviews too, I was looking forward to eating here. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Didn't wait long to get seated or to get a drink. I was impressed with the menu, it was simple, not too overwhelming. Everything sounded nice. The prices were a bit steep, but for good food, I'll pay that. I started with the sweet chilli king prawns. Absolute let down. 5 small and bland prawns you'd buy in Tesco. Topped (albeit with good presentation) a slice of lemon and I am absolutely certain - shop bought chilli sauce. For £9.50 I was rather disappointed. My partner excitedly ordered some nachos. Sadly, they arrived black and burnt. She insisted they got better as she dug through what looked like Pompeii. Again, for £9.50... I thought I'd play it safe, I went for fish and chips. Can't go wrong. The chips arrived, cooked on the outside but very undercooked in middle. Inedible. My partner went for a seafood linguine. It certainly looked nice, again presentation is great. Unfortunately it was bland and almost seemed like it was heated up in a microwave? We didn't finish our meals, paid at the bar and left, opting for a Tesco meal deal. Two starters, two mains, 4 cokes - £65. Considering we were at a previous pub nearby the night before, we had this, plus desserts and alcohol for £10 less. Disappointed and rather light in the pocket... And stomach.

Called at the Butchers Arms unexpectedly today,just as we were passing. They kindly fitted us in for lunch without a reservation, and we had a very enjoyable meal. Pleasant, clean surroundings, and friendly staff. I would definitely recommend!

We were staying in the area for a couple of nights, and ate here both evenings. Really friendly staff, great food, and a nice atmosphere. Some good veggie/ vegan options too

Service was great lovely friendly staff and a nice place. Which I had heard about previously. 2 mains were about €15-17 each I had the belly pork with mustard mash, which was ok. The presentation was great. However the mash was a little tasteless and had a bit too much liquidity and certainly no mustard taste. The pork was a decent portion again needed a little more flavour for my tastes. The only condiments were pepper and salt. Maybe some extra condiments of whatever the dish is would help. E.g. if as in this case mustard flavour, a condiment to add some extra mustard where required.

Beautiful food and love the pods

Visited here for the first time since Covid.....what have you done to the food?! We use to love coming here as the food was delicious and innovative, now it is just boring, unimaginative pub grub. Steak, burger, fish, lasagne, etc, what a huge let down. They do have a specials board but they are far from special. I paid £9 for a king prawn starter with chilli sauce and it was just five prawns in a shop bought chilli sauce! No imagination, no culinary skills evident and way overpriced for what you get. It's such a shame as we have dined here many times in the past and the staff are excellent but if the menu stays like that then I'm afraid we will not be returning.

I'd like to thank Suzette, Lisa and Louise and all the other staff involved in organising the buffet following my husband Roy's funeral. It really was a fitting celebration of his life. The service in the Butchers is excellent. Louise put my family and myself at ease and e veryone felt comfortable. We had booked the pod to allow any family members some privacy when they needed it. This was a good move.The standard of the buffet was exceptional. I'm so grateful to you all. We have been back since the to have a quiet celebration of a family birthday in the Pod. Again the food and the service were faultless Many thanks to you all. Liz
