The Butchers Arms in Carmarthenshire

Stopped for lunch on our way to the Pembrokeshire coast. Fabulous village pub just two minutes from the A38. Wonderful welcome by the hardworking landlady. The landlord was super friendly and offered sample of his beers which were first class. The food was extremely good. All three of us enjoyed everything we had. Only criticism, too much food!! Would unreservedly recommend

Never been here before but booked as was a halfway meeting point while on holiday to meet up with family. Very friendly owner and a lovely waitress working on the night we came. Three of us had the duck which was excellent good portions but left enough room for pudding .All food freshly prepared and at good value shame we are not near to you as would come back more often if local

First visit - had heard good things and did not disappoint. Delicious two course Sunday roast with prompt and friendly service. Ideal with two kids aged 1 and 3. Best roast beef I’ve tasted. The whole family enjoyed and we’ll certainly be going back.

Highly recommend. 8 of us ate here after a local recommendation. We wanted home cooked good food and that is what we all got! Something for everyone (adults and teens). The duck, gammon, chicken strips, homemade pie, scampi were all delicious. Tasty, great portions, cooked to perfection. The best bit of all... homemade chips. The waitress was highly attentive and thebkwners friendly and welcoming from the start. Can't wait to visit again.

We visited the Butchers Arms yesterday and was greeted by very friendly staff. Our meal was absolutely delicious and our waitress Angharad was very attentive and chatty. We will definitely be returning.

Lovely pub, good service, good food, ample portions. World class 'mushy peas'. Would I recommend? - I do frequently. Would I go again? - Try stopping me. Can't fault it.

Visited for a Sunday lunch with a group of 10. It was the nicest Sunday lunch I’ve ever tried in a pub or restaurant and the sticky toffee pudding was lovely too. Staff are very friendly and accommodating and service was quick, especially for 10 people! Would definitely visit again if ever I’m in the area again

We had Sunday lunch at The Butchers today 15th August . The food was of an exceptionally high standard . The staff were both professional and polite and the service was excellent. Highly recommended

An amazing find. Many years ago we tried the pub opposite and were shocked at the appalling customer service we received. We decided to give it another try today in the hope that the old land lady had retired but upon arrival we were bluntly informed that they were not opening for another half an hour despite Google listing their opening times as 12. On walking back to the car we noticed another pub across the road and decided to give it a try. This turned out to be the correct decision. The Butchers is run by a very freindly land lady that greeted us and showed us to our table. Her staff promptly took our order and drinks arrived in minutes. When taking our food order the waitress was accompanied by another employee on her first day learning the ropes. The service we received from these two young ladies was exemplary and a credit to the land lady.We will certainly be visiting again and will recommend it to all of our friends.

A fantastic experience, the service was exceptional and the food delicious. The hosts and staff were first class. Totally recommended. We will return very soon.

Plenty of choices on the menu, we had starters followed by pie and scampi. Good portion sizes and nicely served with proper chips and peas. Prices on a par with those in Carmarthen town which is about 5 miles away. Very friendly service.

We stopped here as a pit stop on our way to our holiday in Wales. We wanted to go somewhere that wasn't a service station and what a great find it was! Delicious homemade food - the chips were handcut just like my mum makes! The waitress and I think landlady were so welcoming & friendly. Would definitely recommend for a delicious lunch!

Had meal with a few friends really looking forward after being in lockdown for so long was really disappointed prawn cocktail could count the number of prawns and the fish and chips well what can I say so dry it seemed like it had been put on microwave too long to defrost and then fried. This place was lovely at one time will not be going back there. We just paid up and left

A great lunch, the food was delicious and plentiful. Melt in the mouth beef in the homemade pie, my husband had the Highwayman's and said the gammon was juicy and tender.Too full for dessert and to be honest, glad I didn't have the starter. Staff were friendly and attentive. Good Covid measures in place, felt safe.

We had been to ghe National Botanic Garden and were looking for a good pub for lunch and certainly found a good one with thd Butchers arms. The food was excellent and the service very friendly. I had a steak and ale pie which was delicious and my wife had a beetroot and cheese tartlet. The local ales were also excellent

What a find!!! Went there for a Sunday lunch whilst camping near by. The meal was delicious and the staff were brilliant especially Annhagrid ( sorry for the spelling). As soon as our meal was finished we booked again for the next time we are down at the end of August. Thank you all and I look forward to the next visit.

Worth the wait... Our date night at the local pub that did not disappoint from the service to the food that was served,the company wasn't that bad either lol we received a lovely welcome as usual and would highly recommend.

It saddens me to write this review but I feel I have to as in the past I’ve always given the Butcher’s glowing reviews. This was our place to go to for years when down in Carmarthenshire and this was our first time out in a pub / restaurant anywhere in 2 years due to Covid restrictions. We rejoiced when told they were open again. Everything was the same , almost, including a friendly welcome from a young waitress. The menu looked as inviting as ever but...... all three of us had what was possibly our worst restaurant meal ever. The chef must have left for we fear our meals were pre- cooked and re- heated in a microwave or were over-cooked.I had my erstwhile favourite of Crispy Duck in orange sauce. Sadly there was nothing crispy about it. The meat was dark and tough and folded in two and the sauce as tasty but obviously out of a sachet.My wife had the crispy chicken strips in a light batter. Again ,nothing crispy about this either. The strips were 4 large breast fillets as hard and dry as can be and stuck to each other with soggy batter. Her side salad was comprised of several wilted outside lettuce leaves mainly.My brother in law had the simple battered fish and chips with mushy peas. Guess what ! The batter was soggy and all our chips were Luke warm and rubbery. We all left most of them. When he asked for tartar sauce they brought several small sachets as you would expect at a KFC not in an expensive gastro pub/ restaurant. In fact, our KFC on the journey home to Warwick was tenderer and more succulent .So disappointing. New owners get your act together. You cannot trade on past glories.

Had a lovely lunch here, staff were really friendly and helpful. Food was amazing, good choice for the kids. Really easy to get too straight off the A48. Hopefully we can come back another time

We have been visiting the Butchers Arms for a number of years but unfortunately have not been able to visit during 2020 because of COVID-19. Visited recently. The food was excellent as usual. Great portions, tasty and very good value . The staff are always polite and efficient. Thank you Lynwen and Dafydd.

Visited with with friends and and family for Sunday lunch, highly recommend, service was excellent, food was homemade and delicious. Will definitely be visiting again.

During covid we have had several sunday lunch (roast dinners) and the Butchers sunday lunch is the best in the area. Beef melts in your mouth & all the veg trimmings and stunning gravy!You will not be disappointed!Homemade cheesecake and sticky toffee desserts are beautiful We hope they continue over the winter Highly recommend

Lovely Sunday dinner that fed our group of 10 following a weekend of camping. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Anti bac and cleaning facilities available. Food was lovely, couldn’t fault it! I particularly liked the beef and Yorkshire pudding!

We popped in on the last day of our camping weekend and had an excellent Sunday lunch with incredible vegan/veggie options! Really friendly staff and an excellent atmosphere!

Missed our usual Friday evenings at The Butchers last night. Meals are always delicious in a friendly and cosy atmosphere.

We called in for lunch yesterday. I popped in to ask if they were still serving lunch and was told that last orders for lunch was 2pm. It was 2:03 by my watch. So we went to The White Hart across the road and had a delicious lunch for the 4 of us. What a shame Butchers.

Amazing food - 3 fillet steaks cooked to perfection & 3 duck specials were also superb - the best we've had out for a long time - excellent service from staff and superb welcome from the hosts. It's on the expensive side but truly worth it as a special treat.Arbennig - diolch

I can NOT believe that the average rating here is under 5 stars. I had the festive fillet on Saturday night which is without a doubt the BEST meal I have EVER had. The food and service at The Butchers trumps 99% of London's offerings for a fraction of the price. Deserves a Michelin star.Dafydd and his Wife are doing a tremendous job.

We had a family meal for 7 for our daughter's birthday. The menu offered excellent choices and the food was beautifully cooked and presented. The staff were friendly and helpful. All in all a great evening. Thank you.

We have just had an amazing meal at the Butchers Arms in Llanddarog. The special Duck on the specials menu was truly delicious with noodles and plum sauce. The staff made you feel so welcome and looked after all your needs with such a professional manner. We always have a wonderful time at the Butchers with such a warm friendly atmosphere.

We were with a party of people and were treated brilliantly. I am vegetarian but do not like mushrooms. A special dish of cauliflower cheese was brought out and a whole plateful of veg. I think my most yummy meal at a restaurant ever! Thank you to all who worked there on that Sunday

Booked on the day and the lady managed to get us in at 6.15. Lovely welcome on arrival. The place is beautiful, we sat in the bar area with a cosy fire. The service was outstanding and the food was stunning. I recommend coming here. We will definitely be back. Thank you

We diverted ourselves off the A40 for lunch at this well reported pub and were surprised to find it buzzing with diners. We were warmly by the lady in charge who found us a table among the many that were reserved - by locals we assume.We enjoyed starters and mains from the choice of 2 menus. The food quality was very good indeed, perhaps reflecting the above average prices (e.g: £7.95 for a prawn cocktail) and the service was attentive. We certainly recommend.

Fifteen of us booked for a mid week lunch after visiting the botanical gardens which are located nearby.

Called to book for a Saturday afternoon. Lucky we did the place was packed out. Meals were nice, service was good. Will call again

Stopped off here after reading the good reviews on tripadvisor but was left disappointed. The waiters were friendly but the food wasn’t great. I had the gamon and egg but it was very greasy and salty.

My husband and I were visiting the National Botanical Gardens of Wales for the day and based on previous reviews, we decided to give this pub a try. We arrived a little early but were allowed access and made to feel welcome straight away by the barman. We hadn't booked but we were glad that they were able to accommodate us as the tables seemed to fill up quickly. There was a good choice of dishes and ours were well presented and served piping hot by the young ladies who were both efficient and friendly. This pub is not local to where we live but if in the area again, we would defiantly arrange a detour.

We all piled into the Butchers for a celebratory birthday meal, a small table of 15! Lovely welcome, our 4 lively children greeting with big smiles and lots of patience and thought. I especially appreciated the waitresses taking the steak knives out of reach of the little ones. Our food was delicious and we all thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were all brilliant, very polite and efficient. Diolch yn fawr iawn!

You can always be guaranteed of a warm welcome and excellent food here no matter when you visit. there is a varied menu with a good variety of dished and some yummy desserts.

Can be expensive however enoyable - locals eat here, street parking, kids, dogs and wives welcome - never empty, a busy and popular place

I would like to thank Lynwyn of the Butchers Llanddarog for a wonderful 70th birthday celebration of my husband Adrian. The food was absolutely beautiful the staff outstanding and extremely polite, Thank you Lynwyn for yet another enjoyable and memorable evening.

First time visit to this restaurant, we stayed at a nearby pub and went to The Butchers on recommendations from our place of stay, owner and staff were excellent, food menu was good and offered a really good choice, sadly however, the delivery to the table was approximately 45 minutes from order and although this seemed too long to wait without being advised on waiting times the food was delicious with generous portions.

This is hidden gem off the main Carmarthen Road, at Llandarog. Fantastic welcome by the family owners,who cannot do enough to make your visit a great experience and they enjoy a good rapport with their guests. Great food with unusual but delicious twists. We loved the salmon and strawberries dish, the beef burger was home made and best quality, the duck was superb. Large meals, but 5hey were very happy to provide my elderly mother with a smaller meal. Thanks.

Called in for lunch without making a booking.The cockles are superb for the starter.I had the pork steak special for my main course which was absolutely delicious,well presented,hot and tasty.My partner had the burger which was also very good. Great service although busy,very attentive and friendly.Would highly recommend.Will be returning.

Extremely good service...brilliant food, hot and well served, fast service. Reasonable price on Beers...good prices on the food for the quality . Although busy when we got there...we were dealt with straight away! I would highly recommend this to anyone to try!

We have been going here for an occasional meal for over 30 years. Never had a bad meal, always needed to book as very popular. Although it has now changed hands, nothing has changed, still as good as it always was

We went for a family meal to celebrate a 70th Birthday. The food was excellent, catering for a variety of tastes, generous portions and presented beautifully. The staff were lovely, very helpful and obliging. We had a great evening and will definitely be back.

Went here for a 21st birthday meal last night and the warm welcome we received from the owner was amazing, going out of her way to come and get a birthday cake I had brought with me, nothing was too much trouble. All the staff were friendly, polite and efficient. The food was superlative, especially the fillet steak, which was cooked to perfection. There was a lovely homely atmosphere and I cant wait for the next celebration so we can return.

There was eight of us having a meal , the meals were all lovely but slightly overpriced.seemed like restaurant prices for bar meals

Character surroundings pleasant helpful staff offering a good menu choice. If you like good food and good portions I would definitely recommend this place. Situated in a pleasant village just off the main A 48 road between Carmarthen and Crosshands.

Dining at the Butchers Arms Llanddarog this evening, extremely warm welcome from Lynwyn who is the proprietor along with Dafydd her husband. The food was superb and service by all the staff was exemplary, the young boys and girl were very pleasent, polite and very professional about their duties.

Booked to come here a few days in advance and managed to get the last available table. We had a warm welcome as usual and once seated our drinks orders we’re taken swiftly. We usually have Steffan taking our orders, lovely young man who is very pleasant who took our food orders when we were ready.

We visited this pub after recomendation to be dissapointed . After waiting over an hour for our meals I had over cooked duck my wife had the fish in greasy batter least said about the chips the better awful meal poor service but very friendly staff well over priced won’t recommend sorry ☹️

Called on Friday without booking and was lucky that they accommodated us. Both had fish and chips was a large portion each and quickly served even though all tables were booked. Would recommend booking at busy periods. Friendly service and will be calling again.

The ambience of this place is marvellous with cosy entrance snug with wood burning fire, which opens up to two "V" shaped wings with quite a lot of exotically arranged tables. The food is excellent with a range of choices including vegetarian. The top end of pub grub I would say. The service is very efficient and genuinely welcoming.

My partner and I went here for an evening meal. This is a traditional country pub. Good variety of food, including an excellent vegetarian selection. Food very tasty and good sized portions. Friendly and helpful staff. Good value for money.

I was with a family member and arrived without a booking- they were very accommodating and managed to find a table for two for us. Its a very quaint pub with lots of rooms off the main bar and rooms off rooms- quite a "rabbit warren".There was a choice of two lunch menus all mains dishes about £11,We opted for the pork skewer served with a small salad and choice of potatoes and salmon en croute served with vegetables and choice of potatoes. We opted to try each others dishes and the food was freshly cooked and first class- the only issue I have is that the chips were pretty standard and thick cut ones and just a few would have enhanced the dish even more. The garlic potatoes were creamy and delicious and the peppers on the skewer were just right in flavour and amount.

Group of 7 came for a christmas meal. Fantastic service Christmas and full menu available We all opted for 3 courses of varied dishes and All meals were delicious

We heard so much about The Butchers Arms in Llandarog, near Carmarthen in West Wales and booking in advance as required to celebrate my wife’s birthday, we could not have chosen a more relaxing, friendly Pub Restaurant than The Butchers Arms! A warm welcoming handshake with a winning smile from the owner, internationally renowned ex rugby star, Dafydd Jones and his wife await the guests as if they had known you for many years. Truly, we met only a couple of months ago in an equestrian context. Butchers Arms is a charming, quintessential cosy Welsh pub restaurant set in the close proximity of picturesque Llandarog Church. It’s high reputation is amply demonstrated by the decent crowds it attracts, so everybody could have a relaxing time to enjoy a couple drinks before food is served from the exquisite menu prepared from fresh local select produce prepared by a highly acclaimed chef to make mouth watering dishes! If you are a big eater, you won’t be disappointed, portions are very generous, reflecting Dafydd’s huge frame as a household name in rugby. He is a gentle giant with a big heart who personally supervises that guests enjoy their evening out! Dafydd has an excellent team of staff working very hard to make sure guests’ expectations are exceeded, not just fulfilled!

We dropped into The Butchers Arms 9pm on our way to the Pembroke coast. What a little gem. Two minutes off the main road, proper pub, great staff, great food - the cockles and the steak pie were particularly fantastic. And really generous portion sizes. Would definitely recommend.

Firstly easy parking. Warm welcome by staff ,very cosy setting. A specials menu, and main menu good selection. Drinks serve to table and food all freshly cooked highly recommend .

I’ve eaten here for a long time, though I live far away, I always go here for food when visiting friends and family in Carmarthen. I talked up the restaurant to my friend who was travelling with me, I wish I hadn’t!

This establishment is located in Llanddarog just off the A48 between Cross hands and Carmarthen. The food is home cooked to a high standard .With local real ale available . It is very popular so a booking would be advised .

Can’t review properly unless had dined there. Saw menu, very expensive, too expensive to take young fussy eaters there. Maybe one day if the place s taken over by new management, it will be nice to try it out.

Warm welcome from the moment you step into this cozy pub. Lovely and friendly service from the owner and staff. Food was very good; would have been great to see lasagne or curry on the evening menu as options also, as these would have been ideal for my own personal taste. However, what I had was very nice. My parents thoroughly enjoyed their food also. Would most certainly recommend a visit here.

Came here last night for a meal for two and as usual we had a warm welcome. The staff are polite and tentative and the food is first class homemade that never fails to deliver. We never have to wait too long to be served or for our meals to arrive and the food is always freshly cooked and the portion sizes are really good too. I don’t normally eat puddings but I have to say the cheesecake here is to die for and also homemade made. My husband homemade soup starter was amazing and every course was perfect. Lovely home made chips too. It’s obvious to see why this is such a popular place, we will defiantly be back for another visit! Keep up the good work.

After reading all the great reviews, we decided to book here for my Grandfather’s birthday. Our pre-booked table was perfectly laid out upon arrival, giving us plenty of space. The service was outstanding for the entire meal, the only issue was the very salty food! The dishes looked beautiful and home cooked, but the meat for the mixed grills was tough, and all the dishes were so salty that it completely overpowered all other tastes. Friends of mine have had lovely meals here before, so I’m hoping it’s just a one off, but we were all disappointed. The radiators were also cranked up to the max, so it was absolutely sweltering, which didn’t help anything. I’m sure we’ll be back, and we really must applaud the ladies for their excellent service, but let’s just say, it wasn’t our night.

Found great reviews on trip adviser and popped in on the off chance. The place was busy and had a lovely atmosphere. We received a warm welcome and were able to get a table straight away as someone had just cancelled; perfect for us!

Diverted to here on our way back from the beach purely due to the reviews on TripAdvisor. We weren't disappointed. Thankfully the super friendly staff could fit us in and we had a lovely meal. Thankyou.

Two pubs next to each other The Butchers being one of them.Can be quite difficult to park,saying that it's off the main road and it's a case of parking where you can.The pub has not been altered for as long as I remember and you have a number of rooms in which to eat,which is quite nice.There were few staff but it didn't seem to effect the running of the pub,as it was hands on for all,and any queries were dealt with right away.We were booked in for 7-30pm and our food were serve atat 8-10pm.We all enjoyed our variou meals which were very nice with ample portions.However it may be that we are spoilt for choice in our area and are not use to paying quite high prices for pub meals.eg = curry £15-95 loin of lamb £24-95 etc Saying that try it for yourselves, worth the experience.

Rang to try book a table and they were full, tried to book us in another night but we are going home today so said no worries and finished the call. Literally 5 minutes later I received a call back and they had managed to sort us a table, fantastic effort even before we stepped foot in the door. Walked in and I cannot praise the staff enough, so happy, inviting and put you at ease straight away. Now the food, fantastic again and lives up to the reviews on here, so thank you to everyone prior to us, we had an awesome night, with really tasty food and surrounded by lovely people. We was even given a bit of insight of where else to visit when discussing beach days. We will definately be back next year when visiting Wales again, lovely hidden little gem that is definately worth a visit, thank you all.

We use to visit from Swansea many years ago but stopped as it had gone downhill

We visited a couple of weeks ago and what a great place. Dafydd and Lynwen gave us a wonderful welcome and we were shown to a lovely table in a cosy dining area. The food is amazing and plentiful. In fact I was full after my starters but the main meal was so nice I had to try to eat as much as possible. I had the pate to start and the chicken with mushrooms and garlic as my main course and it was so flavoursome, I would definitely have it again on our next visit. I cannot comment on the desserts as i was so full!! The evening passed so quickly and the atmosphere was great. The young staff working there are also a credit to place, so friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. Well done to you all and we will see you all soon.

We had a wonderful lunch here. The staff couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming and the food was really delicious. The cockles with bacon dish is awesome and my husband also really enjoyed his Welsh rarebit starter. My fish and chips were very fresh and my family enjoyed meat pie and highwayman platters (basically a mixed grill). You get huge portions so go there hungry! Great pub!

A welcoming, friendly olde worlde pub in a small well kept village just off the A48 Carmarthen Road serving really good home cooked food with large portions. The lunch-time menu offers a wide selection of pub grub, snacks and specials. The pies on the specials menu were magnificent. I would certainly recommend this establishment.
