Me and my husband enjoyed a very lovely evening at the garden room last night. Tom and his team took good care of us.All the staff were friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. We had the seafood tasting menu with wine pairing which was fresh and delicious. The garden room is lovely and bright with views of the garden. We ended the evening in the bar which.I would highly recommend!

We had the tasting menu mid week and had a very enjoyable evening. The food was good but not in the same league as the Angel in Hetton but the service was poor. The girls were not sure exactly what they were serving and were not attentive. They didn’t finish pouring our wine - we thought we had finished the bottle and it wasn’t until after dessert, we realised there was some left - at that point we were onto our coffees. It was disappointing for a a restaurant of this standing to have such poor service.

We visited for afternoon tea and had an excellent experience. We'd mentioned in advance about some dietary requirements and the chef had prepared a completely separate afternoon tea which was much appreciated. There was a great selection of sandwiches and sweet treats, and the staff were very welcoming and friendly.

This was a Christmas present from our daughter. The setting is lovely, staff are excellent and the actual afternoon tea was in my top 3. I preferred the savoury items (saffron arancino and chorizo quiche) and the sweet stuff to the sandwiches. My favourite sweet things were the carrot cake (gorgeous) and the chocolate slice. The buttermilk scones were very tasty. Good choice of teas, I had Lapsang Souchong. They also did a great alternative for lactose intolerance. All in all, very enjoyable.

My wife and I were delighted to find (albeit by accident) that The Burlington is once again doing Sunday Lunch.I see that it is over nine years since I bemoaned its demise on Tripadvisor. We seized upon the news and duly attend-the food was of exceptional quality and good value. However, our delight was short lived as we learnt that the elegant room is shortly to be turned into a function room as the hotel "must move with the times" Whilst the adjacent conservatory is very pleasant it cannot match the tradition and style of The Burlington,so we left disappointed that the reprieve is only temporary.

Venue and decor….relaxing , cosy, country house. Dining room is relatively relaxed all be it lacking a little atmosphere. Service…from Yorkshire! Warm welcome, honest but attentive Wine and drinks….one of the region’s largest selection with a knowledgeable sommelier. Delicious cocktails. Food ….obviously good quality ingredients . BUT as someone who frequently ‘fine dines’ it just tries too hard and fails. Sauces over reduced to the point of being bitter, texture that goes beyond crunch to grit. It’s a shame…obvious talent in the kitchen but feels like a quest for a Michelin star rather than a passion for great taste. First time I’ve eaten out when everything is great…except the food which could with a slightly different approach could easily be there.

We ate in the Burlington Restaurant as part of a two-night dinner, bed and breakfast package at the Devonshire Arms. Dinner was seven courses served as a tasting menu. It was a delightful time together, and when the ‘Chocolate’ course was served, so was a special chocolate birthday item for one of our family. We appreciated the highlighting of local produce during the meal, and the effective service.

We had the tasting menu with the accompanying wine flight. The staff were amazing and the chef accommodated a dietary allergen I have by offering alternatives (the one selected was superb). Both the waiting staff and sommelier were very attentive and helped make the evening what it was. As for the food, it was a tasting menu so don't expect large portion sizes. However, we left feeling full. The dishes were fantastic and we thoroughly enjoyed every one. The drinks were well paired and any questions we had about them were answered by the team.

Dinner at the Burlington post lockdown was a quite exceptional experience, with the restaurant winning high marks from us for atmosphere, food, service and Covid awareness. From the moment we tried the pre-dinner appetizers we had the feeling this was going to be a memorable evening (the lobster toast was something I could eat a lot of!) and our four different starters and mains were all excellent. The duck pastrami was a revelation, the mushroom starter genuinely clever. Both the suckling pig and the cod were good dishes; if I was to mark them down at all it would be because sometimes chefs use water baths when they don't need to. The cod could have been hotter. On the other hand I might mark both up again straight away for the range of interesting and tantalizing flavours tucked into these attractively presented dishes. The desert (peach melba for both of us) was superlative but didn't really match the description (were those peaches really poached in sauternes?) but hey, who cares when food is this good! A bottle of Nyetimber's 2009 rose was really fine. Service was attentive, friendly, just right. Covid awareness was exceptional and compared with the best we have seen since we started eating out again in July. We felt absolutely safe. At £75 a head this was a meal that was worth every penny and one of those rare occasions when the standard 5% service charge wasn't enough. Bravo to everyone concerned.

A pre-Xmas dinner with friends. A very positive experience. Excellent food and wine. The maitre d' was quite characterful, if a little eccentric. But if you are not into a stuffy dining experience then this would be ideal. I was quite surprised at a couple of the guests (residents of the hotel) extremely casual dress code that personally felt was not in keeping...call me old fashioned. Not expecting dinner suits but jeans and t-shirt was a little underwhelming. I guess a paying guest is a paying guest. It didn't spoil the evening and all was good. The restaurant charges at the premium end of fine dining and, compared to many I have visited, it certainly tries to deliver the experience, but was I wow'd and felt it was worth it - possibly not, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good.

I booked this restaurant as a special night out with friends on our New Year trip to Yorkshire. As we were staying some 25 miles away and wanted to enjoy our evening, we booked taxis to and from the restaurant, allowing ourselves 2.5 hours for dining. Our table was booked for 8:30 with pre dinner drinks at 8. We were still sitting in the cocktail bar at 8:50! In the restaurant the head waiter was friendly and very knowledgeable and the meal began well. We had chosen the al a carte menu, so a 3 course dinner with a couple of tasty extras thrown in! By 10:20 we had not been served our mains so we asked for these to be expedited. Unfortunately 2 of the meals were cold when they arrived and had to be sent back! As our taxi was due at 11 we gave our desert choices before the end of our main course. Everything was rushed and spoilt because of this. It seemed that the number of staff had dwindled after 10pm. We even had to pour our own wine. This was not the experience we had expected. We were offered a complimentary desert wine and there was no service charge put on the bill, but when spending over £450.00, one doesn’t expect to be so disappointed.

We booked this very last minute after seeing an offer on Secret Escapes. We knew nothing about the hotel or chef but decided to take a chance. We were very glad that we did. We chose the 9 course tasting menu which was excellent. We have eaten in many Michelin starred restaurants and this definitely is on a par with some of them. There are just a few things which in my opinion could be improved. We had a pre dinner drink in the lounge which we thought came with canapes but only sugared nuts were offered which were a bit sweet with the drinks. However when we were seated canapes were brought to the table which seemed strange as our pre dinner drinks were already finished. However as we were having the wine flight we were given another drink which although ok would not have been of our choosing. In my opinion the canapes would have been better to have been served in the lounge. We chose the wine flight which was good but for the wines on offer perhaps a bit expensive. There was sometimes quite a long gap between courses and it would have been easy to finish the wine before the next course arrived. I think tablecloths would have made a better impression rather than bare tables . However all in all we enjoyed our evening very much , the staff were friendly and professional and I would expect a star to be coming soon. I could not pick out any dish as my favourite as each one was as good as the one before.

We have eaten here on a number of occasions and the food has always been excellent. When eating here in October I was pleased to see that they they have introduced a separate vegetarian tasting menu, although on this occasion I wanted a vegan menu. All we had to do was request this when making our reservation and, hey presto, I had a lovely 6 course tasting menu to enjoy. I'd love to tell you what I ate but I'm afraid the menu was not printed out and I can't remember exactly what I had. So, all I can tell you is that if you're vegan and concerned that you won't be able to get a fantastic meal here - don't worry - you can. Just provide a couple of days notice and they'll be able to accommodate your needs. Apart from this, my only comment is that the wine pairing is very expensive and makes the cost of a meal here rather pricey. Perhaps buying a bottle instead would be better.

We had some drinks and canapes and they took our orders for food & wine before sitting us down at our table at 9pm. The staff were all very pleasant but the service was incredibly slow. After waiting for half an hour, our first course still didn't arrive so they kept bringing us more bread. Our first course eventually arrived at 9:45pm and our main at 10:20pm. We were unable to leave the restaurant until 11:30pm. My poor parents were so tired. My husband & I were really tired too. They obviously need to get more kitchen staff. Food was ok and nothing very special. We live in London and so are spoilt by the choices and high standards we get in London. The wines were hugely marked up. Most restaurants mark up wine prices by 3-4 times but the wines there were 5x marked up which is just too expensive.

Thankfully, that quantity was more than we required. Champagne cocktails to start it was. We stayed in the hotel for two nights and ate here on the first night having the nine course tasting menu and accompanying wine flight. The food was pretty good although the most memorable dish was the three small appetisers we were served before being shown to our table. The service was good throughout and at a nice pace which is essential with so many courses. The accompanying wines were lovely and measures quite generous. My only real complaint would be the distinct lack of ambience in there. We had a 1900 table booked for us by the hotel when we booked and when we sat down there was only the two of us plus a single diner. There is no background music so felt rather uncomfortable. More diners joined us at 1930 and 2000 so it did get a bit better as the evening went on (and no doubt the wines had a mellowing effect on me!). Overall, a nice evening but not overly memorable which was a pity as this was for a special occasion. We actually had a slightly better evening the next day in the Brasserie.

From the amouse Bouche? to the cheese and port at the end I could not fault any of the food and the excellent service we got. ( ok I could have eaten 2 of most things) We celebrated our friends Birthday and had a very special evening.

We made a return visit to the Burlington restaurant for my birthday this year. We had eaten there previously when staying at the hotel. We had the Tasting menu, as on our previous visit. The food was exquisite, we had been very impressed previously, this was better. Beautifully presented, the main element of the dish was enhanced with tiny morsels of vegetables, fruit and other textures, to make each mouthful a joy to eat. I have been lucky enough to eat at some wonderful places, but feel this meal was the best I have ever eaten. The chef had changed since our last visit, I feel that the standard of food is even better now.

I don't often pay £70 for a three course meal but this was a real fine dining experience. From canapés, pre-starter, starter, main, pre-dessert and dessert, we enjoyed every course. Each had a very defined flavour or texture or both. I particularly liked kohlrabi with crab consommé. I wasn't keen on the veg offered with the lamb but it was happily swapped with the beef accompaniments - no stuffiness here! The room is relaxed and elegant and the staff exemplary. A lovely evening all-round.

The restaurant offers both a la carte and tasting menus. We opted for the a la carte and weren't disappointed. The food was delicious with dishes that offered both strong and subtle flavours. We choose the lobster and veal starter, lamb main followed with the almond parfait and chocolate ganache for dessert. There were also appetizers, palate cleanse etc. Due to the nice weather over the Bank Holiday we were fortunate to have a table in the beautiful conservatory. The wine menu was extensive and you could buy by the bottle or glass. Despite having lamb for our mains we chose a smooth Pinot Grigot which was worth the price. The food was absolutely faultless but was let down by the service we received. Service started off really well and it wasn't until we had finished our main that we became invisible for a good 15-25 minutes. The staff seemed more preoccupied with a couple behind us who were on the tasting menu, the service they received was exceptional but it was to our detriment. We were sat with our finished plates for quite some time despite trying to get the attention of the preoccupied serving staff. By the time we received the pre-dessert palate cleanse this had become a pointless dish due to the length of time after our mains. Service did pick up for us again which was a relief as we were worried that we'd be eating our dessert for breakfast. To put it more in perspective the two couples on the same menu, on either side of us, who arrived after us, finished and left the restaurant before us.In addition to our meal we had tea and coffee with petit fours in the cocktail lounge which was a nice way to finish off our evening. Despite the lull in service we had an enjoyable meal.

We enjoyed the a la carte menu as part of the Devonshire Arms experience. The new chef had created a range of fine courses and amuse bouches which even got our niece trying new flavours. While the drinks were pricey, the overall package was served by excellent staff, and left a great taste in the mouth, and memory for us all.

Food ok, but not impressed with their dress code and service dwindled towards the end of the meal. Was looking forward to the new chef's stamp, but failed to deliver

This has 3 AA rosette but the service and food was actually of a higher quality. Perhaps it was the new chef, who was anxious for some positive feedback. All the dishes were excellent, but so were the incidental dishes: amuse bouche, appetizers, palate cleansers, so forth.Recommended were the duck breast, the Angus beef, and for the true carnivores, the veal sweetbread. Desserts were of the same high standards, but we couldn't find the space to fit in that very inviting cheeseboard.

We include a review on the Resuarant in a review of the Devonshire Arms. What more can we say other than its fabulous. Food was exceptional as was the service not cheap but worth the extra cost as quality and care in preparation costs! Great for a special occasion!

One night staying at the hotel and the Burlington was a must. Although my wife would have liked to experience the Taster menu, for me there were a couple of items on this menu that I would not have appreciated so we both opted for the A la carte instead as you can't mix menus. The wine list is extensive and expensive. Despite this, we were led by the French Maitre de table to the cheapest bottle on offer as the ideal to accompany duck and Yorkshire beef; a bottle of Californian Cabernet Sauvignon at £32 and uniquely in my experience we were given a sample to taste to compare with an Argentinian Malbec at £40 which had been my first choice.A delicious mise bouche was followed by local lobster for both of us, the duck and beef to follow and delicious chocolate deserts. We also added the cheese course as an extra. The restaurant is currently between head chefs at the moment with the new chef due to arrive in August. Our meal was cooked by the sous chef of 15 years experience and all I can say is that he clearly is a wonderfully talented deputy. As with all fine dining do not come expecting large portions it is the quality of the flavours that are important not the quantity. Whilst not quite the best experience that I have experienced in fine dining it was close enough and not far off Michelin standard but a little way to go yet.Highly recommended

Overall the food was good but generally missed the mark on being exciting, which I thought it would be. We were a party of 4 and being told we all had to eat the Tasting Menu or the Al a Carte by a member of staff that was surly, unsmiling and unwelcoming was not a good start.

The whole food experience here is perfection. The cooking is amazing and the service, though a bit formal for me, was done with wit and style. I can vouch for the scallop starter and the lamb main course and my partner loved the turbot. It's not cheap but this a labour-intensive operation that fully justifies the price. We'll be back.

We opted for the "8" course tasting menu. To call it "8" courses is maybe a bit ambiguous as they class the amuse bouche as the first course. The food itself was well presented but no course stood out as special. The butternut squash was lacking in flavour and the duck had undercooked skin. The service was poor we were offered bread 3 times before we actually got any (though the onion bread was very good.Clearly more work is required to get back to it's former glory!

We had a delightful 6 course meal at this restaurant. The food was simply brilliant. The staff were excellent (some courses needed some explaining!), they were always on hand when you needed them but were never intrusive. It was truly a delight to eat here!

Our 8 course taster menu was an absolute masterpiece. Fresh local ingredients mixed with the chefs exceptional talent combine to deliver a true dining adventure. I was very disappointed that I was starting to feel quite full by course 6 but there was no way I was going to miss out on some wonderful food. And I was so glad I did. We will definitely be returning.

We went here as part of a wedding in march, The devonshire arms is an old, beatiful hotel and expensive to stay at, I think its overpriced for what you get, the service is average, the drinks not too bad priced compared to other things in the hotel. The wedding ran late due to the hotel, the bars serving drinks were very small and you had to form part of a long line of thirsty drinkers, the food at the weeding was really good and tasty, but some guests food was cold, were the wedding took place was nice but there was an strong smell coming from the kitchen which filled the room (think it was cabbage). Service was slow so by the time the evening event was due to start and evening guests were arriving the wedding breakfast had not fully finished.Overall it was a good day but due to the people the day was spent with, not due to the hotel or staff. It could have been done better, plus staying here at the hotel in its overpriced rooms can be costly and doesn't compare to other hotels in the area.
