Not a great welcome and the service barely existed. We felt we were intruding. The bread & oil/balsamic was an expensive disappointment. Two slices (4 halves) of Inexpensive characterless white bread for £6.50? The venison pie was excellent but the vegetables tasted as if they were covered in oil or some such. My wife’s fish was good but 2 glasses of expensive wine and a bill for £75 just didn’t seem just. Sadly we won’t be returning. And I think they knew they had failed us.

Pleasant place and service, with a decent menu at a fair price. Good atmosphere - not noisy - and good car park make this a very good choice.

We were spending time with family in Kelso and selected this hotel in St Boswells which is rated at four stars. On arrival it was not easy to find staff for check-in. Having done so we went to our "Classic King Room". It was not as clean as one would expect. Like the rest of the hotel it has a tired, dated appearance and was in poor decorative order with out of date furnishings. The duvet was too small for the king bed. Repairs and decoration not attended to. Our room was not cleaned after our first of three nights and used cups were not taken away. There was no hairdryer in the room. We complained that evening and were told that the manager would see us at breakfast next day, but he was not there. We eventually caught up with him in the car park and he promised to put things right, which was done as far as was possible. Breakfast was generally good, but on the second day we were told that there were no tomatoes, or salmon (as on menu). There was very little fresh fruit. The waitress was only member of staff present at that time. She was rushed off her feet and even had to check out departing guests as well as attend to all the tables.

Firstly I can highly recommend the staff - helpful and friendly. It's a very old building so don't expect level floors! Room was comfortable and great mattress. We ate in the restaurant and the meal was excellent and we had a very flavoursome breakfast. Had to knock a star off as our room was on the side of the hotel that was on the A68 and there was a lot of traffic noise through the night so I didn't sleep very well.

Our family of 6 and our wee dog went here while staying nearby on holiday. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We all had starters and mains. The mushroom bruschetta was delicious as was the trout pate and gravadlax. 3 of us had homemade burgers which we all said were fantastic. The other meals were fish and chips, the chicken on the specials board and sea bass. There were no complaints whatsoever. Food was piping hot, delicious and staff were all lovely. Would highly recommend the Buccleuch Arms and we will definitely go back if in the area.

Was staying in Selkirk on a Tues evening and couldn't find a pub / restaurant open except for the Indian. This one was suggested on an Airbnb site our friends were staying in. Friends were from France and Spain and wanted an authentic experience. despite mixed reviews on Tripadvisor we decided to give it a try, it was open and could fit the 6 of us in, we were happy we went .Not sure what they meant by an authentic experience but it was a charming bistro - inside the hotel - with welcoming, helpful staff and a range of Scottish dishes - Haggis bon bons, steak pie and venison feature on the menu. Anyway we had 2 lots of Haggis bon bons, soup, steak pie (one of the best I've had), haddock, goats cheese salad and 2 chicken curry, shared an apple sponge and vanilla tart. 3 med red wines, 1 coke, 6 half pint beer = £160 without tip. Food hot , tasty and value for money. Id visit again if I was in the area.

Thank you so much to the staff of the Buccleugh Arms especially Val who dealt with our booking. They managed to fit us in at last minute when there was miscommunication with another restaurant in the borders. We were a group of 31 with only a couple of days notice. We had a lovely 3 course meal in their Salmon Room. The room was beautifully laid out and a gorgeous Christmas tree in the corner. There was plenty of staff to evening the food and drinks. A great evening was had by all. Sorry forgot to take any photos.

On Saturday 18th Nov we looked for a local restaurant to book a table for 3 adults for an early 4 pm early evening late afternoon table for a meal due to circumstances. Phoned and got an answering machine. Took advice from the answering machine and sent an email specifically asking for a table for a meal at 4 pm. No reply so phoned again - still same answering machine and message left and then on Sunday Morning got an email in reply asking if we would like 5.30pm or 6 Oclock? At lease we eventually got a reply!! We did go somewhere else.

Having frequent this establishment many times over many years and enjoyed the breakfasts and service for our shooting party. But things changed some two seasons ago and we had very poor food and no choice. All meals were full Scottish breakfast. Cold badly cooked and greasy. So we went elsewhere. Until last week Booked in on7 th Nov for the Friday 10th. We walked in to be told we were not booked in. But after a little sorting out They said they would sort it out. WE organised the tables. Got one caffetaire between 6 men. Eventualy after one hour They took orders. Two breakfasts never arrived ( 11 people in total). I received one egg scrambled with one slice toast which was disgusting Yet cost same as full breakfast. Crap food Crap service No Butter No Toast. No supply of coffee and tea. No Sauces and poor service. We will never frequent this Crap hole again and will not recommend

Food and service were great (although maybe a bit overpriced). Decor is lovely and done to a high standard too. The thing that spoiled our meal though was the group of customers at the bar who swore continually (including the ‘c’ word) and one belching loudly in front of diners, including families. The staff did nothing to try and stop this, in fact one staff member seemed to come off shift and join them. I’m an army veteran so not a prude, but th continuous foul language really put a dampener on the meal. We raised it with the waitress when paying the bill who promised to address it, but had only just come on shift so hadn’t heard it. Very disappointing really.

Beth who was the hostess was friendly, welcoming and efficient. After a lovely stroll from Dryburgh along the banks of the Tweed to St. Boswells we called here for lunch. It was very nice. Two had the hot Sirloin sandwich and fries, one the fish finger sandwich and the last of our party a humble cheese sandwich with fries. It was all made with nice fresh ingredients. The staff were friendly and service was good so a healthy tip was forthcoming. It’d have been five stars if the steak was cooked to personal preferences and sliced but these are small matters on what was a very nice and reasonably priced meal. The lager was good too.

When our food eventually arrived it was good, we had great burgers. But the service was poor, the staff lost / forgot our order…which can happen… but when your sitting in a restaurant seating area and by 21:00 still have no food arrives you would think the staff would ask themselves if there was a problem. But when we did get our food it was good. The staff just need to up their game and be more aware of their customers.

Called in for Sunday lunch. Shunted out into chilly bistro, told food not beaming served in the bar - it was. Lamb was nicely cooked but the vegetables were a little disappointing. Staff all seemed a bit gloomy. Main issue was being in a chilly part of the bistro, would have been much improved if the wood burning stove had been lit. We had had a recommendation to try the 'Duke of Buccleuch Arms' by our hotel. It had great space between the tables and felt very spacious!Although we were a little undecided we ordered a portion of 'Hornig's Haggis Bon Bon's' as a starter to share. We then ordered the' sea bass risotto' from the specials board and the 'Sirloin Steak.' Unfortunately due to a bit of a mix up our starter never arrived but the rest of the food was delicious, well presented and the service polite and efficient.Regardless of the little glitch we thought it was super and have no hesitation in giving it five stars as anyone can make a mistake! For pudding it had to be the 'Pear, Cardamom and Honey Tart with Saffron Ice Cream' which was delicious and 'Mint Chocolate and Chocolate Ice Cream' Super!

Covid restrictions, in early May 2021, meant that wer had to be in tables of 4 and no alcohol with meals. Most of us thought our meals were excellent although one person returned a cool steak to be warmed through. Comfortable room was perfect for our two tired golden retrievers. Adjacent cricket ground is perfect for an eary morning dogwalk. Best breakfast on our 4 hotel visit as we were served exquisite Eggs Benedict.

Got an overnight B&B with a bottle of wine deal through a voucher site. When I booked the date, I asked for an upgrade to a superior twin room and also asked if they could book us a table for dinner. Never heard back from them, so assumed all was well. We arrived, after a long drive up from Shropshire, on our way home, at just after 3pm, their check in time. There was no-one about and my husband had to go searching for someone to check us in. Eventually a young chap arrived but he patently didn’t know what he was doing. I asked if we had been given the kind of room I had requested - he didn’t have a clue. I asked about the table booking - he didn’t have a clue but said he would confirm it for us - he never did. He said the room we were allocated No. 4, was “very nice”.:Well, it might have been, in the 70s but it was dated, poorly decorated and cold. The bathroom was pink! There were lots of wee notes stuck to surfaces about hot water and not leaving electronics plugged in. The fairly thin duvet barely came to the edge of the small double bed - not the twin room I’d requested. There was no hospitality tray. I told him I wasn’t happy and he said he would try to get hold of the owner. The owner eventually arrived and didn’t offer an apology about the room not being as I’d asked but said he would show me two others and we could change if we wanted. Neither of the two was a twin room. We did opt to change to a much bigger room - No 8 - a family room with a king size bed and bunk beds. It was slightly better decorated and the bathroom had obviously been revamped. Still no hospitality tray and the room was really cold. We had to put on the heater they supplied but it too, failed. I asked the owner why no tray when there was no reason under Covid regulations for one not to be provided. He said they had just decided not to supply one. There was no tumbler in the bathroom either. Not much use when folk need to brush teeth or take medication. Very, very disappointing. We did get a table for dinner and the meal was very good. As was the bottle of wine included in the deal. My husband paid for the meal before we retired for the night. Breakfast was good too. Lovely coffee and poached eggs on toast. When I went to check out the lady on reception said that as we had already paid for the room, all that was left was the £89 for food and drink! I was able to produce the receipt for our food and said we had nothing to pay. I certainly wasn’t going to pay for a superior room when I don’t actually think this hotel has such. She was quite flustered and said there must have been some sort of mistake. Very poor organisation here. We enjoyed the food but as for staying at the Buccleuch again - no way.

After reading the reviews since lockdown had come to an end, we nearly didn't go but so glad we did. The starter of Grouce and Black pudding was out of this world. Yes there is a smaller menu like most restaurants have at the moment but the standard was as high as we experienced two years ago. They have stopped putting the food on a table for you to collect and I dont understand the comment in a previous review that the bar is spartin, it has lanimate flooring like it always has had but fewer tables as you would expect at this time! The other changes are they have paper menus and the wine list is up on the board and you have to book ahead. The next time we are in the Borders we will be visiting again and perhaps we will be staying there as well!

At the time we visited the bar and bistro were bare board and quite depressing. We understand about the virus but other venues are managing without going full Spartan. Quite honestly l found teh bistro noisy although a staff member told me l was wrong. There is no table service and you are expected to clear your own dishes. I was told that it was uncomfortable for the staff to wear masks. The food was good overall. My wife had the bon bons and gammon and both were very good. I had the asparus starter and the venison. The venison was lovely but the asparagus was very poor in both dishes. We have discussed a return visit and decided against. At our age self service is not on and with the staff not wearing masks we did not feel that our interests were being put first. We did not feel safe.

We like the food, the staff, the rooms, but why can we not lie back in the bath and reach the soap? It may seem a small thing but it is so obvious and so annoying! Don't know how they cook the sausage as it was still pale pink on the outside. Bacon must have jumped in the pan and straight out again. We like a runny yolk but not a runny white. Just had cereal and toast on the last morning. Couldn't face another undercooked breakfast. Sorry Billy, but your breakfast chef needs training. Such a shame that these faults spoilt our opinion of Buccleuch. Probably think twice about future visits.

The food here is fine - we had a tasty meal (although the prices seemed to me to be a little on the steep side for the size of portion (and I do not expect a heaped plate)) However the service let them down - we bailed out without ordering dessert having waited 20 minutes for a dessert menu which was promised and never arrived. Would we return? No, since there are better options in the area which are less busy and better value.

Stopped for lunch with a mix of very young children and adults and as the weather was good we opted to eat in the garden where the children could play on the slide and swings.

Ate two nights in a row here, despite staying in a nearby hotel (but that's another story!) food was lovely, great portion sizes and the staff helpful.

Bar area busy and vibrant whilst the restaurant area is usually more tranquil. Good food well cooked, served with panache; use local ingredients.

3 friends and I visited for a lovely meal here. We were not disappointed in anything. The food was delicious. One of my friends is a bit of a foodie and she was most impressed by the sea bass. She loved the texture and flavours. I have been here a few times with my husband and I remembered last night why I decided last time not to have the steak pie again. It is huge! So well filled with the best meat but I could only manage half. We all had different choices and there was not one bad plate amongst them. It was a fabulous end to a “girlie” weekend in the Borders

Had the Don Coo burger. It was very nice, well cooked pattie just the right bit of pink ness in the middle. I would have been happy with a bit less meat in it. It was advertised as having scotch bonnet salsa in it, but to be honest didn't really have any kick to it the only spice of note seeming to be from the jalapenos.

Sometimes difficult to find a parking space nearby but definitely worthwhile to have lunch or dinner there.

With a combination of Staying near by and all of its good reviews to complement it, we were really looking forward to eating here, but whether we caught them on a bad day and/or too late of a Sunday evening (7.30pm) our roast ham & roast beef dinners couldn't have been more tasteless or bland than they were and we couldn't find anything to commend them. What a shame.

combining comfort with relaxed Scottish borders chic - the rooms are classic with vintage wallpaper, comfortable beds and goosedown duvets. The bar has all the feel of a local pub, with lively banter and a great selection of beers. The gardens are picturesque and the greenhouse at the back provides a decent supply of homegrown produce. But for me the moment of triumph was the breakfasts. Wow - fresh and delicious smoked salmon eggs royale or the full scottish breakfast with eggs done to your specifications. Given that all proper tea is theft I even pinched a couple of their earl grey teabags as a keepsake. It's the simple things in life, but suprisingly hard to get right nevertheless. They managed to tick every box during our two day stay. And there's plenty of fantastic things see and explore in the area if you are feeling motivated. I hear the fishing is also out of this world if that's your bag. Mine was just chilling after what turned out to be a brilliant but bibulous wedding in the private rooms - dancing until 2am. Thanks for the hospitality folks and congratulations on getting it so right.

Called in here for lunch recently and we were not disappointed. Excellent menu with lots of choice to suit all tastes. One of us had steak pie with all the trimmings which was tasty and filling and the other had the camembert tart with roasted pears, nuts & rocket which was absolutely delicious. We can also recommend the lemon meringue cheesecake - gorgeous. Can't wait to go back.

This was my first visit to the Buccleuch Arms after several years and returned based on its excellent reviews in recent times. I certainly wasn’t disappointed. There was eight of us and went for lunch on a Sunday. Service was excellent from the start. Very attentive and professional, even although the restaurant was busy. I had the steak pie with new potatoes. It was hot, freshly made and extremely tasty. Portion of a very generous size also. My wife had the fish and chips and others in the company had roast beef with Yorkshire puddings, all excellent. The menu was extensive and caters for coeliacs very well. Prices were acceptable for the quality of the meal. They also keep the local Ale from Born in the Borders which was very well kept. Can highly recommend

We've stayed before at The Buccleuch Arms and if anything, the choices and quality of the food just keeps getting better. Breakfasts are served in the bistro bar and as well as the usual cereals, fruit juices and porridge you can have a choice of either a full Scottish Grilled breakfast or Eggs Benedict or Royale or a very delicious 3 Egg Omelette. These we have tried and found any off them to be the perfect start to the day before we toured the beautiful Border Country.

Can`t find anything to fault after having lunch here on a Sunday. Everything was top drawer from starters through to desserts and service was very good. Staff are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Will definitely return to try more of the menu.

Chose to eat in the Bistro - one can have the same menu in the bar. On a Sunday night DBB deal so the roast was included - no choice remaining but the one option was still good. Served on the plate. We treated ourselves to ice cream afterwards (the meringue that I had fancied was also all gone). Staff friendly and helpful.

Visited this small pub for lunch on a trip to the Borders on a very cold day. Arriving at 12.45, we had to wait quite a long time to be acknowledged before we were shown to a rather poor table and then another long time until we were asked for our drinks order. No drinks appeared and, anxious about time going on, we had to get up from the table and speak to a staff member. There were staff around, just no one attending to our order. After that, we ordered main courses, thinking we no longer had the time for starters.

My husband and I came here on Hogmanay for lunch and it was excellent. We ate in the bistrot. The lady apologised for a reduced menu as they were gearing up for the New Year’s Eve party but we thought it was a great choice. Having visited before, we knew to forego a starter as the portions are BIG. I had the steak, ale and mushroom pie and I can honestly say it was one of the best pies I have ever had. The meat was so tender and the gravy was delicious. A great selection of vegetables too. I unfortunately could only manage to finish half of my portion even without a starter. I hate wasting food. I think next time I will ask if it’s possible to have half portions. We will definitely return.

We are in the bar for the first time yesterday. Previously we had eaten in the bistro several times but we preferred the atmosphere in the bar. I had the mussels as a main course and my wife had the burger . Both were well cooked, tasty and well presented. The service was friendly and efficient. Dogs are allowed. I recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We thought that we would have a treat for the last night of our trip to Scotland and chose the Buccleuch Arms for convenience. We didn't look up any reviews prior to our booking. The place was very busy for a Saturday night and we booked a table in the bar. The service was good to begin with, then faded as the evening wore on. My starter of pate was served in a ramekin and the top had gone grey under the butter, indicating that it was not freshly made. My partners steak, though cooked as ordered was served on a cold plate - inexcusable. The manager was remarkably casual in his apology and no offer was made to compensate. My daughter and grandson were satisfied with the food which she said was unexceptional. Pub grub with a high opinion of itself.

The bars and restaurant are very big in size and look to be well patronised, an added bonus is that Dogs are allowed in the bar (plenty of room for them), you can also eat the main menu in the bar plus some interesting black-board specials. We visited a number of times whilst in the area and both food and drink did not disappoint. there is also plenty of car-parking. One minor criticism is the till process, all orders are entered into the till and then drinks served, on two occasions the coffee element was missed. Certainly the drinks should be served and then till processing follows, customers should not wait unduly. However overall experience good.

Best bakers in the Scottish Borders, their apples pies are absolutely delicious. In fact anything you buy is lovely highly recommended.

With its dark wood furnishings, including a very large gantry, and most of the wall space covered in framed rugby strips, photos etc, the public bar in the Black Swan could almost be described as dark and old fashioned. It can also feel cramped at times as everyone tends to shun the other bar (and rightly so - ‘cos it’s horrible). The public bar is a place where you have a decent chance of meeting some wee, unintelligible drunk bloke (or two) in the corner, but it is also a place where it is easy to strike up conversation with locals at the bar. In many ways the Swan is like a pub from the past and is pretty unique in Kelso. Perhaps that’s why we always come in whenever we visit the town. It is an ordinary, no frills, traditional Scottish pub with good service and good lager and good banter. It suits us perfectly well.

Sadly now seem to be closed. Unfortunately the Main Street of Jedburgh offers nothing in the way of dog friendly cafes... the only town in our trip across central Scotland to have that issue.

Had a great afternoon tea. Our dietary needs were catered for and we were offered lots of tea and coffee. There was a lovely selection of savoury and sweet things and it was very good value for money.
