I went in about half an hour after opening and bought a pint of draught beer. It felt warm as I carried it back to my seat - ditto as I drank it. Yes, I ought to have taken it back, but I decided to give it a second chance, and just mentioned the temperature to the girl behind the bar. I was assured that it was meant to be served at room temperature! It was then obvious that the beer had been sitting in the lines from the cellar since closing time the day before, without the stale beer drawn through and discarded. The Brownswood is an attractive pub, but if it's a good pint you're after, then wait until sales have built up and the warm beer sold to somebody else.

Just visited here we are local and just stopped in for one drink. Myself, and my wife are cocktail enthusiasts and were pleased that we met Keiran who really knows his stuff. He suggested a cocktail based on what we like, slightly off menu which in this area of hipsters and individual characters. I was disappointed that the staff seem to be encouraged to be rigid and not going off the menu and hope this changes as they have a fantastic west end style mixologist in Keiran who is one of the old school artists of the cocktail. Due to him and the service he gave us ( plus they are dog friendly) we will be regularly coming here.

This was our first visit to the pub & we booked for Sunday Lunch. We were met with a warm welcome & great service throughout. The Sunday lunch was really enjoyable, the rib-eye was full of flavour & delicious, as was the pork which was served with outstanding pork crackling. The Yorkshire puddings were cooked to perfection, as were the roast potatoes & selection of vegetables & the portions were so generous! They have a great selection of drinks, including alcohol free. We would definitely recommend & we will be visiting again very soon!

I booked a space at the Brownswood for my birthday. It was for 24 people. It was a last minute booking and they could not have been more accommodating. Due to it being sunny when we arrived they found us a table in the garden instead of four tables inside, so we could all be together. They were really helpful and friendly and I would recommend this place for a few drinks on the weekend and definitely if your having a party

By 4:00 pm the dinner still wasn’t out, so we had to cancel after and hour and half waiting for food.Others were in a similar position, and but the time 3:30 had come the pub/restaurant was a lot quieter, so don’t understand why this took so long. The guy on the table next to us also had to wait 45 minutes for a bit of cake and custard.Need to sort this out, or people will turn their backs on your restaurant.

I visited the Brownswood today for a family lunch and have never been treated so poorly as a paying customer! I ordered fish and chips and overdone fish turned up with burger fries and not chips as you’d expect . I complained to staff and literally no one did anything about it. My husband and son carried on eating (on my request) whilst the staff watched me wait for a resolution...nothing! They stood by the bar with no effort to try and make things right. Eventually after my husband and son’s food went cold, the manager came over and gave me a refund on my order and told me he had only been working there for two weeks and the rest of the staff for a week. The menu is limited, the staff do not communicate and the manager refused to give us a full refund on the food (my husband had left half of his cold roast). I wouldn’t recommend this pub for lunch, they have changed hands and the current owners / staff just do not seem to care that your lunch has been ruined. They should’ve just said they had run out of chips and not donned me off with burnt fries !Terrible shoddy experience - avoid if possible.

as usual, the collective wisdom of the TA crowd is about right; this is an old pub (I recall drinking there 40 years ago - it was ok, a bit rough) which has been done up and now does food, not very well; we went for Sunday lunch, as family lived nearby; big place, very good selection of beers; so far, so good. Service slow; waiters seemed friendly enough but rather disorganized; very limited menu (mostly roasts, though that's not usual for bog standard pub grub on a Sunday); reasonable portions; shank of lamb ok; but smothered in glutinous gravy, with veg (broccoli, potatoes and a thing that I think may have been a parnsip) that seemed like it had been round the block a few times. Definitely NOT a snip at £15. Didn't risk the desserts. Conclusion: DON'T eat; drink and be merry. I see that a new Sunday menu is imminent. Maybe not before time.

I wanted to go have some lunch with my cousin before an arsenal match, I recommend the brownswood as I had been there a few years back and it was lovely, sadly I cannot say the same for this visit, we waked in and the first thing I noticed was the persistent smell of urine and urinal cakes, we ordered and despite the prices looking rather inflated for the area,we continued and as it was that much we assumed it was going to be worth it. Sadly once again we were mistaken as the starters were insultingly small, burnt and shockingly presented and just down right not worth the money, we went to the person who served us who was rude and unhelpful and almost wasn't willing to accept that the food was inedible, eventually they took the food back and gave us some more which was still pretty awful but was at least edible. The mains we're not great and looked like they could have been easily replicated by a 15 year old in good tech class.

We have been visiting this pub for years thanks to its closeness to the local climbing wall. Something must have gone really wrong during the past few months, both in the menu choices and service provided. The food menu has changed and is now really basic. The waiters seem to have no idea of what they are doing e.g.: they need instructions on how to prepare drinks, they take wrong orders, they have no idea of what is in the menu etc. To be noted that these issues were not an isolated case, but have repeated consistently over the course of several visits.

So I arrived at the Brownswood hoping for a delicious sunday lunch with a couple of friends. My advice if you're thinking about going here is to not bother, it's really very sub par. Firstly, I asked for beef and was brought what was definitely sea bass, which they kept insisting was "sea beef". Not what you want on a Sunday! The waiter also kept looking at me funny and came over a number of times to ask if I wanted anything else, in a strange tone of voice. Later on, I was in the little boys room and he came up behind me with a can of coke with something poking out and asked if I wanted to "ride the aluminium train". Very strange and a little threatening. Avoid!

After a friendly voice answered the phone to take my booking, I was looking forward to a roast dinner at The Brownswood. But from the moment we arrived the staff were rude, promptly informing us we had to order downstairs. The waitress then came over and looked shocked that we were all eating, before plonking down the cutlery at our table. When the food arrived (I ordered the veggie option) it was disappointing to say the least. Watery gravy, rubbish potatoes, burnt Yorkshire pudding and just relatively tasteless. Worst of all was my friend who ordered leg of lamb, but received slices of beef. After we questioned it, the waitress pointed at all the meals and said pork, veggie, lamb. LAMB. That seemed to seal the deal in her eyes, despite the fact that the meat was definitely beef, and she'd served it with horseradish, not the mint she'd promised. Made sense I guess, as it was beef. When we told her it was definitely beef, she whipped it from under my friends nose, apparently "taking it to the chef to prove her wrong." Next another guy turns up, with half of my poor friends dinner confirming that we are WRONG and she had been given lamb. There was no arguing with him, no apologies and certainly no compensation. The chef then came out to confirm the identity of the meat, telling us that again we were wrong, and that everyone else loves the roasts. Either we're crazy or this pub is rubbish. Avoid if you like polite staff and delicious food. Go there if you're missing the tesco's lasagne scandal and fancy some mystery meat.

My friend had decided that she would try the lamb Sunday lunch. This was delivered with all the vigor of a wet fish, and looked whole lot like beef. She was tired and though it's fine I can have beef but we thought we would mention it to the staff. So followed a constant instant from 3 members of staff, including the chef that my friend had been eating lamb. I Would avoid this place unless you want to be insulted and disappointed. I would recommend just drinking at home and burning your own food, it would be cheaper and less bother.

There is a large beer garden and first floor but I was still allowed to sit (with luggage) in the reserved area with an agreement I make room for quizzers later. I'm ok with this. The Guinness was good; and the sirloin steak cooked as asked. The peppercorn sauce was served separately, which I like. It was a little too intimate with the low level lighting but that is the way with pubs and indeed everywhere these days. Whatever happened to well lit rooms...sigh. If visiting the area again, I'd happily call back.

I came to this pub with my friends just for a drink and then we then saw the fantastic menu and had to order, I had peri peri chicken which for the price was a very good size and tasted amazing, one friend had a Brownswood burger and said it was one of the best burgers she had tasted in a while, while another had the ravioli which I must say I tasted too and the sauce was amazing, we have already made a date to come back on the weekend to eat more lol. Plus the bar staff were fantastic, they made us laugh and it was a great atmosphere with them making us feel so at home even though it was the first time coming

Went here for the pub quiz (a good quiz btw) last night with some friends and ordered what I thought was a house burger with extra cheese. Upon arrival, the burger was cheeseless. Not a problem, I thought, as I queried this lack of cheese with the waiter. After an overly-lengthy discussion as to whether or not I had said actually said I wanted cheese when I ordered at the bar (the waiter did not take my order), the waiter begrudgingly took the burger back to put a slice of cheese on it, grumbling that it would cost me £1 extra for the cheese. After having given me the cheeseburger, the waiter returned after 5 minutes proudly declaring that the order ticket given to the kitchen did not include cheese. I was therefore required to pay £1 extra, despite the mistake coming from the barman who took my order, and the fact that I had already paid for the burger when I ordered it. My issue was not with what was on the order ticket, the barman had just made an honest mistake of not putting the extra cheese down on said order ticket.I think the waiter thought I was trying to scam the pub out of a slice of cheese (which must have cost them less than 5p to buy). He proceeded to ask me for the £1 extra, but I didn’t have any coins so asked if he wanted to go and get the card machine. He was about to go downstairs to get it until my friend just asked if he could let me off the £1, seeing as it was their mistake. After much deliberation, he agreed. Very odd experience all in all. The customer is not always right at the Brownswood.

This place used to be a great place to come after a climbing session at the Castle but I've not had a decent meal here in 6 months. The roast dinner I had most recently was dry, overcooked, the potatoes were rock hard. Then came here for dinner with friends after a climbing session and for £8.95 got a pasta dish with 3 pieces of actual pasta swimming in sauce. Just pathetic. Is it gentrification? Hard times? Who knows. I also ordered chips with my beer that never turned up.My partner's burger and chips looked pretty good. I'll just get that next time.

Popped in here after visiting castle climbing and got some great food. Our group had venison sausages, steak, crab burger and falafel burger and everyone enjoyed they food. They have a nice little range of craft beers and ciders too! Atmosphere is nice, there's also a great outdoor patio area, and the staff were friendly. Service was quick though - we ordered and ate within an hour!

We have been coming here a lot over the last couple of years. It has always been a great pub, with great staff, a perfectly adequate selection of beers, great beer garden, buy most importantly, it punched well above it's weight on it's food. Sadly, recently the food has deteriorated to slightly below average, and the staff often don't appear to be as happy as they used to be. The Brownswood Burger, and the Chicken Burger used to be fantastic, and the Superfood Salad had the power to turn a devout meatarian to the vege side. In the last few months, the burgers have dropped some of the ingredients that made them so good, and the price has remained relatively unchanged. The meat is sometimes dry, and the burgers just generally lack punch. I would rather pay a bit more for the old burgers, and to have the salad back. Still holding out hope for improvement, as this is a fantastic pub, but in the meantime, we'll be looking for other options for our weekly post-activity hydration and sustenance.

The UCL climbing club have been using the brownswood for years but the service has really gone down the drain. One member of staff is particularly abrasive and his service is slow. There are always long queues at the bar and the staff are aggressive and unapologetic. Needless to say we will no longer be drinking there.

Let me get one thing straight: I'm all for the employment of young people. But when a brash, churlish young man pours me my hard earned beer there's bound to be fireworks. I've been frequenting The Brownswood now for close to four years and the recent turnover in staff is making me consider renovating the White House down the road, or even worse, have a half shandy at the Robinson Crusoe. Something's got to change

Four of us dropped in for a Sunday Roast recently on the recommendation of a barman down the road. oGour of use odered Sunday roasts and out of the four roasts we got none were in anyway decent. The meat was so thinly sliced that it was practically transparent. It was also over cooked and tasteless. The gravy was shop bought as it had some flavour because if it came from the beef I ordered it would not have tasted of anything!! The veg too was bland and tasteless, overcooked to within an inch of its life and the roast potatoes........look if you advertise Sunday roasts at least have the decency to home cook the roasties. They were so obviously frozen shop bought roasties, again bland and tasteless. If the staff are wondering why my fork was slightly bent after I ate.........its because I was trying to cut up a roast potato and could not even get the fork to pierce the overcooked potato. All four of us ended up going to a Turkish place on Green Lanes instead, waaaay better food, tastier and fresh!! Lastly if you are going to allow kids in with toys/scooters etc can you at least ask the parent to keep an eye on them as most people do not like eating in a creche tripping over toys and small humans!! To clarify I have no issue with kids!!

A large pub done up in that familiar gastropub garb (stripped wood floors, mismatched furniture, artisanal beer): trouble is, the food is shockingly bad, and unbelievably expensive. A 'superfood salad' contained around 50p worth of spinach, some watery asparagus and little else - half the promised ingredients were missing! After sending it back, it returned with a few lumps of feta and a scattering of nuts, topped with a bone dry piece of overcooked chicken breast. And all for a mere £11!My friend's 'special' was a tiny pie, with a very high sauce-to-meat ratio.Oddly this used to be a very good pub, but something has gone very wrong.

Whilst visiting friends in North London they suggested their local as a cool place to enjoy a few fun hours together. Who was I to say no, they then mentioned they served pretty good grub and sold me when the mentioned Beer Battered Fish, real chips and authentic mushy peas, I thought heaven. We arrived to find a great local pub with a huge fantastic garden, well kept and in pristine condition. The signs were good. The staff a real eclectic mixture of characters were all friendly, big smiles and nothing was too much trouble. A really pleasant evening , chilled drinks served by attentive but not intrusive staff, I don't think my glass was empty !!! The food we ordered was a selection of different dishes so we could all try each other's. Not a single crumb was left on any plate, my favorite was the Fish, Chips n mushy peas. They also have specials so lots of choice . I wholly recommend this place to all comers, we will be back , with more friends , great evening by all Thank you .

I stopped in after a longish ride on a very crowded pre-Christmas no.106 bus. Imagine my delight: full but not crowded, bubbly but not blasting, an air of real, un crazed merriment, commodious, not cavernous. It was even possible to have a conversation. It might have been easier if I had come with someone, but undaunted I spoke with the bar staff -- real conversations in spite of the pressures of their jobs on a Saturday night. Amazing that they made me feel so welcome. Thanks. They also knew about the many real ales on offer and guided me toward two I'd never tried before and liked quite a lot. Again, thank you.Complaint Dept: the food was merely ordinary and the portions were niggardly. A tablespoon of coleslaw with my pulled pork sandwich? Straight from Iceland fries fried in not very fresh Frymax? Come on! Essentially this is two reviews. 5 stars for the bar and service. Three (or less) for the food. It shouldn't be impossible to bring the food to a higher standard -- more generous portions could add another star almost immediately. Better quality ingredients would help too, starting with real chips. Until the food improves, eat somewhere else and go for the beer, the cheerful service, and the great vibe.

So, i was part of a group of six guys who turned up around lunch-time on Saturday 2nd August. We were having some lunch prior to the Emirates Cup Games.Initially i didn't think much of it. Seemed like a reduced menu and the pub was a little tatty. This didn't put me off as i was hungry! We found out that there was a bbq being held in the beer garden, but this didn't start til 1pm so we had the food from the normal menu.I had the pulled pork burger and everyone else had the normal beef burger. The food arrived after a little while and we chilled in the quite nice garden to be fair. When it arrived though a couple of the orders were mixed up. This delayed us leaving and we were slightly late to the games, but the point i'm making about this is that the manager came over and surprised us all with the offer of a round of drinks on the house. I thought this was a a brilliant thing to do and something i'm not used to. Thanks for that!Overall a great visit, and despite my reservations about the decor, the experience was a good one.

Great to read positive reviews of the Brownswood. A mob of six Aussies and an Irishman lived next door for six months in 1972 and it was our regular every bloody night (except Sundays for live music at the Arsenal Tavern). I went back on a visit in the 80s and it was a bit depressing despite all my happy memories. So I'm delighted the old girl is lifting her skirts again....maybe I'll get back in a couple of years for my 70th birthday.

This was my local for a year, and I truly loved it. Really missing it now. I think the atmosphere is great, from the back garden, lively downstairs and peaceful upstairs. We used to take a board game upstairs and settle in for hours. Great ale and cider selection. The food was generally good - the weak point being the veggie sausages, which were pretty much just frozen veggie sausages. Was always satisfied with everything else though.

Keep really trying to like this pub. It looks good and the beer is usually ok. The food is really disappointing though. Have now tried the burger several times (dry and tasteless), the steak (really badly cooked) and the chicken supreme which was actually like the sort of thing you get on a plane; the veg was watery and the potato cake was just mash. Felt pretty mugged off after paying £11 for it.Think we are giving up on it for anything other than the odd beer.

The staff are always really friendly and the food I have had during the week has been really nice. The Sunday roast was very disappointing. Everything on the plate was fine apart from the meat, which was the thin sliced kind and definitely didn't come from a slow roasted joint. I should have known for £9.95 it was unlikely to be that good but I just thought I'd put a review up to warn people.

On the recommendation of some friends we decided to go to The Brownswood for Sunday lunch. It is just as well we reserved a table as it is obviously a popular place and we would not have got a table otherwise. The decor is really nice and the refurbishment has kept a lot of the original features in place, like the really nice cut glass mirrors and window features. On offer are plenty of real ales and other such drinks, and very nice they are. Also the exposed kitchen puts out really good food. Unfortunately, and not immediately obvious, is that the menu on a Sunday comprises no started and ONLY the roasts on offer. So I was a bit disappointed to find out that my choices from the menu were not on offer. However, I soon got over myself on receipt of a good plate of proper Sunday roast. Lovely lamb, lovely roast potatoes, decently cooked vegetables, a Yorkshire pudding and gravy. Certainly it was quality over quantity and if you want to eat huge groaning plates of food, then this is not for you. Also it is, in my opinion, good value considering how much you could expect to pay elsewhere.
