Renewing my reader pass was done very quickly today. Post their cyber attack you're asked to re-enter your details with them prior to pass issuance. The wifi upload speed got a massive bump it seems - tested at over 200mbps so you can go and upload heavy knowledge to t'internet there now too. Bring a wheelbarrow if it's too heavy. No grunting and heaving in the reading rooms they're for silent study.

I was very disappointed with my visit to the British Library. One of the displays emphasizes the importance of diversity and treating every visitor equally, but my experience was the complete opposite. I felt unwelcome, and one of the receptionists near the exhibit was rude. Additionally, a guard near the reading room treated me poorly, making the visit feel uncomfortable and uninviting. For a place that claims to value diversity and respect, my experienced left much to be desired.

I had a disappointing and disturbing experience at the British Library while trying to register for a reader pass. Upon approaching the desk, the staff member asked, “How long are you here for?”—a vague and unnecessary question that seemed to imply something about my immigration status. I clarified that I am a permanent resident and British citizen and mentioned I had my ID and address proof. Before I could even take them out, he abruptly asked me to step aside so he could serve the people behind me—even though only a couple were waiting. What followed was even more troubling. The same staff member chatted casually with the next visitors, made a comment about one of them “looking Irish,” and let them proceed without requiring ID—just reminding them they’d need address proof. They were not asked to wait or step aside. The contrast in how I was treated versus them was glaring and made me feel racially profiled and unwelcome. As a climate researcher and long-time UK resident, I came to the library for academic purposes and expected professional conduct—not bias. After reading several other reviews describing racist incidents at the British Library, it’s clear this is not an isolated case. If no action is taken, I am seriously considering raising this issue more formally, including ringing the bell to draw attention to repeated discriminatory behaviour at what should be an inclusive public institution. This experience was unacceptable, and I sincerely hope the British Library takes immediate steps to address such incidents and properly train its staff to treat all visitors equally and respectfully. These staff who lack basic courtesy and decency should never be allowed to continue as they are a shame in a place like this.

Review of the British Library – Excellent Study Space with a Few Drawbacks The British Library is undoubtedly one of the most respected and valuable public institutions in the UK. Located conveniently on Euston Road, near King’s Cross and St. Pancras, it offers a quiet and focused environment for study, research, and academic work. I’ve used this space during several exam periods and truly appreciate what it provides — but there are also areas where improvement would make a big difference, especially for students. A Clean, Peaceful Environment – But Not Enough Space One of the first things I noticed and appreciated was how clean and well-organised the library is. The reading rooms, public areas, and toilets are all maintained to a high standard. Staff are generally polite and helpful, and the atmosphere inside is calm and serious — ideal for studying. However, considering the number of students and visitors who rely on the library daily, the general study areas feel quite small. During busy hours, especially in exam season, it’s genuinely hard to find a free seat unless you arrive early. For a national library, the public space for study feels limited. An expansion of seating or better space management would benefit those who come here to focus on their work. Café and Shop – Overpriced for the Audience The on-site café and shop offer decent quality food and drinks, but the prices are noticeably high. A simple coffee and snack can cost more than at many cafés just outside. Since most of the regular users of the library are students, researchers, and young academics, the pricing feels out of touch. Prices should ideally be lower than average — not higher — to reflect the library’s role as an academic support space, not a commercial venue. Perfect for Study – Not for Tourism This is not a tourist attraction, and that’s exactly why it’s so useful. Unlike other London landmarks, the British Library is quiet, focused, and purpose-built for serious work. Of course, there are small exhibitions and interesting public displays inside, but the main use of the space is for academic work. It’s one of the few places in central London where you can sit quietly for hours without interruption. Great for Exams – But Limited Hours If you’re a student preparing for exams, this library is an ideal spot. The quiet atmosphere, strong Wi-Fi, and presence of others working seriously can boost your focus. It’s the kind of environment that makes it easier to concentrate and stay productive. That said, one major drawback is the library’s opening hours. While they’re fine for regular days, they feel limited compared to similar institutions in other countries. In places like Europe or North America, many libraries stay open late — even 24/7 during exams. Unfortunately, the British Library closes quite early (around 6–8 PM depending on the day), which can be frustrating if you’re in a good work rhythm or studying after work. Extending the hours — at least during peak exam seasons — would help many students and researchers. Final Thoughts Overall, the British Library is a fantastic resource for anyone needing a serious place to study or research. Its location is ideal, the atmosphere is peaceful, and the facilities are clean and reliable. However, limited seating, expensive café prices, and short opening hours hold it back from being truly exceptional. With a few thoughtful changes, it could be even more welcoming and supportive — especially for students and regular academic visitors. If you’re looking for a place to focus, revise, or write in peace, this is one of the best spots in London. Just be sure to arrive early, pack your food if you’re on a budget, and check the closing time before you go.

I came here today after almost a 50 year gap. What a wonderful experience to be back. I got a reader's card and went to the Science Reading Room. I was not amazed by the huge number of people with laptops, but I was very delighted to see a few readers with a book! The Library has a vast area for free study. Also you get food and drink easily! There are on many occasions free exhibitions. This is a wonderful place to escape to for a day!

My visit to the Business and IP Centre at 11 AM on 28th April 2025 : While readers are usually expected to adhere strictly to the no-noise policy, it was disappointing to find two members of staff engaged in a prolonged and quite audible conversation, with little apparent regard for the rules. We visited the library because it was close to where we were staying. The building attracts attention. Upon entering there is an outdoor space where you can be, there is an area with tables and chairs. There is a control at the entrance but we did not have to wait. Once inside, the space is impressive. The number of people with their computers working anywhere, even sitting on the floor, is striking. We have moved a little between floors, we have not seen books because they are in rooms that we have not entered.

The stars are for the impressive collection of books, manuscripts, maps etc this institution is a trustee of ... Also it is free to visit which is magnanimous and beneficent..I was greatly moved to be standing in the presence of such greatness and antiquity. It was touching to see all the young people sitting studying in such an environment that surely must encourage scholarship and academic endeavours. Mortally disappointed however by the architecture of the building housing such a nationally and internationally important collection, which stands in stark, brutal contrast to the majesty and graceful beauty of St. Pancras which reinforces this all the more(!!! )while standing in silent protest and repudiation of this architectural vandalism. As an avid reader from child hood and current collector and reader this was on my bucket list of visits for decades! I felt as if I had walked into a library in postwar Soviet Russia! We were dismayed and saddened to see the treasures of the Library ( the Magna Carta (from1225, not 1215), 1st to 4th Folio Shakespeare were displayed in a space that wore the depressed air of a neglected council house.. King George the V donated his Library to the collection, but I very much doubt he would have approved of it's current accomodation. What our King makes of this i don't know but may well be surmised from his past views on what is pleasing in constructing all manner of structures. Wherefore this philistinism?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!😭😭😭 A choice few of my husband 's comments: 'You can see St.Pancras has aged like fine wine, this turned to vinegar..' 'Quarryhill, Leeds must have been the inspiration and may this also follow in it's footsteps..' 'The most charitable thing you can say, is that it is a triumph of function over form'...

I left with a bitter taste in my mouth. The lady lacks customer service skills, she was so rude and petulant. I went to register for a reading pass today at The British library. As I was queuing to register for my pass, an orthodox jewish man was queuing behind me who had lost his pass but his identity was know to the staff because they acknowleged they recognised him and had him on their data base. He simply wanted to get a replacement pass. He was asked for proof of address, which he didn't have as, as an orthodox jew it is rare to have this type of document, aside from maybe a gp letter with an address on ( which the library staff did not ask for ). A gentlemen they mentioned to him that he coukd show a bill on his mobile phone, when it is welllnown that orthodox jews do not use or carry phones with internet on them as this does not adhere to jewish law for jews unless authorised by a rabbi in exceptional circumstances ! They would not allow him access to the reading rooms but then decided they would allow him access ! This was a totally humiliating process for this gentlemen to go through as other people were observing him and staring due to all the fuss from staff around such a simple issue ! As a conservative jew myself, I found this disgusting especially in the times we live in ! Everyone should be made to feel equal and inclusive in society and have respect for each other in every circumstance that occurs not matter the religion or ethinicity ! Kindly educate or retrain your staff accordingly on how to show respect and inclusivety for other religions and cultures ! Furthermore, the restriction on not being able to take medications prescribed by the nhs into a reading room is ridiculous ! Why does taking in an asthma inhaler, or epi pen require a security check ???!!!

The British Library itself is an architectural masterpiece. What is amazing is that there is a huge glass bookcase in the center of the library. Awful staff. I visited the library for the temporary exhibitions Medieval Women and Silk Road Oasis, for which bundle tickets were available (which we bought from an unfriendly person at the counter). The bundle allows for the booking of a time slot for entry for Medieval Women only, whereas Silk Road Oasis is walk-in at any time (no option to book a specific time slot). My family and I were then stopped by a staff member when trying to enter Silk Roads first in a very rude and extremely unhelpful manner, and told to refer to the ticketing counter for clarification. Back at the ticketing counter another staff member said the exhibition was sold out for that day and there was no way that I could still enter, even though I already bought tickets. She refused to understand I had already bought tickets and simply needed clarification on why I was not allowed inside the Silk Road Oasis exhibition. She made many rude gestures, pointing at her head with both hands, insinuating I was crazy and dumb for "failing" to understand the exhibition was sold out. She then sent me away and also looked to other patrons for approval, which was even more insulting. Her behaviour was extremely inappropriate and unbefitting a public organisation. In the end, the situation was only resolved because I persisted with trying to enter the exhibition yet again, and finally encountered a helpful, understanding, reasonable staff member who swiftly allowed us to enter. I never write bad reviews, but this must have been the worst experience with museum/library staff I have ever had. The exhibitions were nice, but the awful, awful, awful behaviour of multiple staff members left a bad aftertaste.

I was a bit annoyed to see that despite ticket slots selling out (tickets seeming capped at a sensible level), Medieval Women: In Their Own Words was oversold/its entry (and exit) times were not being monitored. It was absolutely rammed. A snail-pace queue formed, maybe partly due to the exhibition’s linear format, and trailed around the entire space. We were at this relatively small exhibition for about 2 hours and I think we saw maybe half of it, and even then it felt like we could only look quickly due to the pressing line behind us. I’d have liked to have had the time to try to read the women’s writings in their own words, rather than having to clip through the placards in a hurry. People kept pushing in and standing smack in front of the artefacts, no doubt impatient to see them but infuriating nonetheless given the queue. A range of women’s stories are represented from different cultures in Europe. Heartfelt work blighted by the ticket management.

It's worth a visit if you like books as much as many other museums and art galleries. In particular, the treasures in the exhibition room on the first floor feel like discovering a real treasure when you see the handwriting or original work of a famous writer. The King George Library surrounding the center of the library also seems like a golden tower of books. It was a shame that I couldn't see the Newton statue outside because it was under construction, but I'll leave it as a memory of my time in England. Panterras Station is right next to it, so it would be nice to see Harry Potter Platform 9 and 3/4 as well.

The Library itself is a world renowned institution that is a must visit. If you're just passing or have a need to study, this is the place for you. A good cafe & separate restaurant inside are very popular & the outside plaza is a hive of action the summer. The exhibitions that the BL put on are excellent and always informative. You will need a Reading Room ticket for the main section. Very easy to find too, next to St Pancreas Railway Station.

I loved the place and the collection of rare books like Shakespeare or magna carta. I would love the information point to be more helpful however. I had to find out what to do from different places. Also the daily library was cancelled because there was a private booking... and there wasn't enough guides... so basically whoever pays more wins. Also to get to any reading rooms you must have a library card. If you live in the UK you need a driving licence, otherwise an ID and proof of address is needed. It's really nice and quiet in the reading rooms.

As a regular READING ROOMS user, I don’t get the level of chatter coming out of the staff. Right now, the security guy is - very loudly - discussing the ins and outs of his medical schedule, swellings and scars with someone over the phone. Earlier this morning, also in Maps, the security guys were chatting about nothing and everything in proper loud voices, while we customers kept our side of the bargain by keeping it down and attempting to get on with our work. Totally unacceptable. Needing training?

The free collection here is amazing! So many fascinating manuscripts, books, and even sheet music and other relics. My personal favorites were the codex sinaiticus and an original Tyndale Bible. Other highlights for me were Alan Turings notes, original Monty Python scripts, and Mozart sheet music.

Centre of my universe, what more can i say. Only the library of congress comes anywhere close, but the city of washington DC can't compare with London.

Silk Road exhibition, small room, not many exhibits most or all borrowed from the British Museum. Interesting but disappointing as too small to warrant visiting. The library was also underwhelming, public areas uninteresting, all desks and seating utilised by home workers.I guess u need to be a fully paid up member to access or see any of the books. One monster glass encased book case in the centre. Some collections of stamps.

Went visit two exhibitions, The Silk Road and Medieval Women. Both enthralling in different ways and well presented. Took a good hour to look around The Silk Road Exhibition and over two hours visiting Medieval Women.

The dishes were quite good but the proportions are ridiculous considering the prices. 12 pounds for 3 mini teryaki chicken skewers and 6 pounds for 3 small beef meatballs as a starter. The quantities are only correct for starchy foods. No vegetables offered. Furthermore, we came for the bao, but we didn't see them on the menu.

We loved our lunch at Carrots and Daikon yesterday. I had the garlic tofu Banh mi and my husband had the tofu lunch box. The baguette forming my Banh mi was the perfect combination of crunch with a soft centre and the tofu was nicely garlicky. What really made our day were the ice creams! The chrysanthemum and mango ice cream was such a fantastic combination and the matcha and pistachio was delicious too. We then bought one of each of the other flavours and I must admit that the combinations are creative genius! Who would’ve thought that mint choc chip would go with coffee and raspberry and jasmine tea with its floral notes would hit the spot?! I thought that the coconut and lemongrass was super refreshing too. Thank you to the friendly folk at C & D.
