The Britannia Coaching Inn in Gwynedd

Visited on Saturday afternoon early March and had a very friendly welcome. Enjoyed the beer and a chat and will be returning soon. Thanks Gary!

Always found this a very welcoming pub with good well kept real ales and premium lagers. Food is very good. Pricewise it's no different than the other 3 pubs. It's a small two room which is always clean and tidy. If this the worst pub a single review thinks they need to get out more.

That was the worst experience I have ever had at a pub, it started within the first 30 seconds of entering the very grimey and very grotty establishment when me and my mate went to buy some drinks and some bar snacks 4 pints were £23, i thought that this was a little overpriced but gave them the benefit of the doubt as most places in aberdovey are similar pricing, now onto the bar snacks, 2 packets of crisps was £3.20, my mate bought the crisps and was served by the new landlord Gary, my mate simpily said to Gary "are you joking?", probably not needed but ah well, Gary did not like this and then had a very rude conversation with my friend, We then sat down and drank out mediocre pints and ate our overpriced crisps, and one of his emplyees apologised for his behaviour, clearly a regular occurance with Gary. later in the night one of my friends dropped his glass on the floor, luckily Gary came to the rescue with his dustpan and brush that is clearly not used very often in this establishement, we offered to clean the glass up beacuse who wouldnt? Gary did not like that either and very aggresivley said no he will clean up our mess, to that i thought okay then Gary you can clean up the glass then, Overall we felt very attacked throught the night for not much reason and i dont believe we behaved badly at any point in the night, on the other hand the Dovey inn and Tides in was a much better experince and was much better value in those establishments, I will not be coming back to this pub again and will be a regular at the Dovey as it is a much better pub. We called in here on a Thursday evening in late September. Took advantage of their 'Steak Night' offer and had 2 superb steaks accompanied by a bottle of excellent Tanners Douro wine at a reasonable markup. Great service from the friendly young waitress upstairs. Just wish we had a pub as good as this near our home!

We stumbled across The Brit in the summer whilst holidaying in Aberdovey, and we must say what a little gem it is! Our favourite pub in Aberdovey by a country mile. Gary and Seona are fantastic landlords. Very warm and welcoming with extremely friendly staff such as Sarah. You even get a friendly visit from the pub dog Terrier. We have eaten several times here. The steak and gammon which I must say are superb! They are always cooked to perfection 😋 and with a view over looking the Estuary whilst you eat, what more could you want. If you are looking for a good old fashioned seaside pub with a genuine great atmosphere with superb food then this is the place for you. 5*****

Having tried other bars in Aberdyfi We were delighted when we found The Britannia with its friendly staff and the best pint of Guinness in the area by a mile. Then to find they let rooms and shown one can’t say I was disappointed lovely room over looking the Dovey estuary at a very reasonable price. We will be booking next visit to this wonderful town.

Have visited the Brit on a number of occasions most recently in late October. I have always found Gary, Shona and Sarah friendly and welcoming. I think if you haven't run a pub you can't appreciate how tough it is, 14 hour days and full on in the season. Great real ales and home cooked food. If you want the standard pubco stuff there are other places. Even our slightly awkward dog Louie was made welcome. Keep up the good work and any other ventures.

We enjoyed several hours in this pub over the week that we stayed in Aberdyfi. We were always made welcome by Gary and by the lovely Sarah. We were accepted like locals.

The spot is lovely, staff are welcoming and friendly. Would definitely recommend coming. Food was excellent.

My wife and I have visited the Brit many times over the course of 10 years, and therefore have seen the change over in ownership, and we are made to feel so welcome every time we walk through the doors. We are in aberdovey at the moment and we haven’t been since July this year, and soon as we walked into the Brit, gary welcomed us and said ‘hello you two! Not seen you in a few months’, which automatically makes us feel at home. We have also eaten in the restaurant and we can not fault any meal that we have had. If you want a local pub away from home, then the Brit is definitely the one to visit. We’ll be back, as always.

We nearly didn’t visit because of the negative reviews. Our experience was good throughout. Starting with the welcome from the young man behind the bar who produced a surprisingly interesting wine list, to the bubbly waitress in the upstairs restaurant. It was a Thursday evening so we took advantage of the steak deal. We enjoyed well cooked steak and a bottle of Portuguese red.

As the Stag do in March keeps being brought up, I thought I’d tell everyone what really happened. The lads on the stag do did not kick off because we were refused drinks, nor did we get spoken to or cautioned by the police. we were served and then received abuse from Gary because we had been in the Dovey drinking then came over to the Brit. His actual words were ‘so you think you can drink in the Dovey then just come over here do you!’ Something that wouldn’t be a problem to any other pub owner but seems to be for them. One of the members of the group was kicked out because he was smoking a vape in the pub, he tried to go outside but all the doors had been locked (against fire regulations with close to 70 people in the building) The rest of the group were then shouted at for standing in a hall way and then in no uncertain terms told to leave. We didn’t because one member had brought a round costing over £70 (we were apparently refused a drink though according to the owners comments on other reviews) so we went back into the front bar, where poor judgement on my part, I decided to throw the contents left in my glass over the bar and then proceeded to leave. To even be able to get out of the pub I had to give seona a secret password (her name for anybody else who gets trapped in the hell hole!) Once everyone else had made their way out we started heading home when seona decided to walk over while recording us on her phone, she came straight up to us and slapped a member of the group round the face! She then proceeded to tell everyone over social media the next day that 4 kids chased her down the road and pushed her! Every member of that party are from the local area and 30 all the way up to 60+. So to summarise, if you want to be abused, lied about and assaulted!! Head to the Shitannia inn! Where, if your lucky, you might just get spat on!! Ohh and before it’s said I a reply, yes I am another Mr one contribution! I’ve made an account purely to comment about your ‘fine’ establishment 👍🏻

We used to visit the Brit regularly pre-covid, so this was our first visit since then and first since the new owners took over. What a difference - and not in a good way either. Unlike previously, the food was blasé and over-priced. One of the beers was ok, which isn't great as they keep harping on about them being a pub, first and foremost. The real disappointment however was in the surly attitude of the owners. I thought it was just the heat and the pressure of the summer holiday season that had got to them but talking to some locals in the Dovey Inn - where we had much better food and better beer the following night - they're like that all the time - and never wrong! Always the customers' fault and the customers don't know what they're talking about! That's no way to run a hospitality business, but I guess they'll find that out soon enough.

Absolutely brilliant bar. The most polite bar staff I have ever met. Service was superb. All staff super friendly. It is a pub first and foremost but what they do, they do very well. Had 2 absolutely delightful evenings in here and could not fault anything at all about the place.

Lovely atmosphere & views over the Dovey river, the food was excellent although the sauce was tasteless & we were charged £2.50 each for a large mushroom, however the steak was very good.it was very peaceful & intimate. Poor quality food and expensive, place seems very tired and grubby. Very small pokey bar areas, looked like a stable the front bar. Not sure how it gets positive reviews ? Except one from Gary L was the guy behind the bar, guess the owner. Would explain how !!

Stayed in Aberdovey for 11 days and visited this proper pub most days, whilst always being mindful to drink responsibly ! Great atmosphere, the owners couldn’t have been more friendly. Steak night is on a Thursday with 2 steaks for £30 ! We were a table of 8 and the 2 girls upstairs in the restaurant were polite, efficient and looked after us so well. Food was good honest pub grub and we made sure to book for the following Thursday as it was packed. During our time in Aberdovey at the Brit sometimes there were 16 of us, sometimes 6 and on one occasion I may have snuck in on my own for a little libation! On every occasion nothing was too much trouble and both landlord and landlady had great banter with us all. Whether drinking in out or shaking it all about this is the best pub in Aberdovey. The Thunder toffee vodka is a must.

The Britannia is my default watering hole when in Aberdyfi. Friendly, serving good beer and always warm. The upstairs eating area has a lovely view at lunchtime (December review so no view at night) and serves competent, tasty bar food. A good pub.

What a wonderful little hotel. We booked 2 nights here for our wedding anniversary and it was fabulous. We stayed in their delux double with sea view and we loved it !! Great little find and would definitely stay again.

The table service was moderate, had to ask for the wine list and starters and main course had to be ordered together!! Poor management policy.The shared starter of feta and olive salad appeared immediately, no bread,pita bread would have lifted the event to a higher level. Main courses were disappointing - very thin, dry, unappetising gammon that looked like it had been finished sous vide rather than grilled and was basically inedible. Lightly battered haddock had a noticeably thick coating totally lacking any seasoning. The portions of chips and garden peas were well prepared (who could fail here?) but were far too generous. Ambience was not inspiring and could not give this venue a recommendation.

visited the britannia for a lunchtime drink as i saw it advertised an upstairs balcony view over the harbour, balcony only caters for 8 , right next to the upstairs restaurant, not dissappointed fine views over harbour and restaurant, did not order food but from what i saw on other tables looked very good, inexpensive for drinks

We stayed here last May and returned a week ago. We really liked the Britannia before so gave it another go for dinner. Really nice. I ate a steak which was almost perfect (I'm a fussy steak eater!) and we had a great meal/ evening. The beer is great and the staff are friendly.
