The new Brasserie is really nice and beautifull furnished. The food was excellent and the menu had a good set up. We had a chowder and the scampis as starter, the duck and the chicken balmoral as main and the panacota at the end. All beautifull served and very tasting. A real good experience and we will come again, thanks

Thought we would pop in for a drink while walking the dog which then developed into another drink and then a three course meal and cocktails. Absolutely fantastic, the food was delicious, the team serving us were great and I’ve already been in touch with friends to go back. Spicy crab, followed by a delicious rib eye steak and sticky toffee pudding that was out of this world. If I could avoid getting fat I’d be back there tomorrow. Brilliant.

We found the menu a little challenging. Rabbit satay…Guinea fowl…cheese soufflé. There were a selection of pricey steaks to choose from and the usual burger or fish & chips. Dinner was over very quickly..an hour max from arrival in the bar to being finished! We only had a main each tho. The fish was very greasy, the steak was good but pricey for what it was. Only customers were wearing masks, not one member of staff was seen wearing one at any point during our visit despite it still being required at the moment in Scotland. Nothing to entice us back unfortunately

Of course the castle, the grounds the surroundings are impressive. The rooms are lovely the open fire in the hall and the grand staircase all worth the trip. But the key to the restaurent is something a little more simple yet very hard to get right...seasoning. Adding condiment. Watch master chef, British menu or any other array of cooking master classes that pass for tv these days and what you will be told is this simple but oft-forgotten rule of cooking that will make or break your dish, your episode, your career, your life....and it is this taste, taste, taste ....it’s that simple. Taste the forking food for fork's sake!! Tasting is certainly something the chef does a lot here and it shows.... So down in the basement that smacks of an atmospheric cellar with neat intimate booths, the staff that greet you are not only well trained but trained and multi-skilled for delivering excellent service when they are alone and under pressure (Monika well done at breakfast! And the Spanish waitress at dinner on Friday whose name i didn't get and of course Ryan who my mum took a shine to!) Of course, we came for the food my mum and I and she doesn't often clean her plate at 84 but here there was no stopping her! The ox cheek was melting and soft and surprisingly encrusted in a crispy pastry. The accompanying sauce had a great depth of flavour. Fish that my mum had was quickly dispatched as I say unusual for her and was crispy and light of batter and deep white and meaty of haddock. Haggis starter croquet was rich and moist and served with a delicious pickle to cut through the haggisness (it’s a word now) The burger was meaty deliciousness and crispy yet light and fluffy perfectly fried chips were a welcome theme with fish and burger. Desserts were delicious, Sticky toffee pudding was just perfectly toffyesque, the raspberry macaron was just the epitome of raspberryness and pannacotta obviously had the elusive but essential wobble. We went the first evening but went back on Saturday no need for a trip to town when there is food on your hotel doorstep or rather basement like this. Oh and its incredibly well priced (I know im from London but even so it was immense VFM) We will go again and I would certainly advise anyone that values well cooked well seasoned well-presented food served by friendly knowledgeable staff (Nearly forgot the mini whisky tasting!) staff a trip as soon as you can... Ah lastly...One cautionary word through reading a previous review...There's no napkin around the wine thats correct (wine list does however provide a good choice and excellent value by the way) If you want someone to put a bib around your wine bottle you’ll likely find that in an Angus steak house or a beefeater ....that’s nice to stop the drips, all the important things in life..it doesn't drip anyway if you pour it properly.. if you want a bib gourmand around your restaurant well that’s a different matter...

Although close by we hadn’t eaten there in a while, and were disappointed with our dinner on our recent visit compared to previous visits. The food on this occasion was average compared to previously when it had been outstanding, and although it was a Friday evening it was sparsely attended. Maybe we just caught it on a bad night, or maybe their focus was on the wedding reception, which appears to be their main business. We were disappointed.

My wife and I were married at Melville Castle in August 2008 and did not plan to visit again. We saw that it had changed hands and been used for different functions over the years and were worried that if we visited again, it might not be as special. However, for our 10th anniversary in August 2018, we decided to give it a try. We booked the Castle Suite, where we spent our wedding night, and a table in the brasserie for dinner. We were overwhelmed by the kindness and consideration of the staff as soon as we entered the castle, but our greatest praise is for John in the brasserie. He could not have done enough to make our stay special and had a cracking wit to go with it. Thank you John and the entire castle team for your kindness, generosity and for a wonderful stay. Melville Castle may be a grand house, but its staff make visitors feel at home from the moment they arrive. We will certainly return soon. With best wishes, Ben & Michelle Evans

We were not sure quite what to expect, but decided to give it a try and were very well rewarded. It takes a little work to find this place. There is plenty of free parking in front of the main building. This is more of a residential manor house with Gothic decorative castle architectural enhancements than a "real" castle, but it is very picturesque, nonetheless, and you are likely to find yourself taking lots of photographs of the property. The restaurant is not that large, therefore you might want to consider making a reservation in advance. The restaurant furnishings are relatively simple (compared to the other public rooms of Melville Castle, which also serves as a hotel), but the food is very good and the service was also quite good. We left well satisfied. The menu is quite typical of the region, which includes various seafood options.

Arriving at Melville Castle tired in the late afternoon, we decided to eat in - big mistake.Descending the stairs to the restaurant could well be compared to entering a dungeon and the wait staff generally played the medieval jail keeper role quite well. No place for smiles or greetings here. We asked for a table for five and were placed at a small square table in a corner that would be pushed to seat three inmates. (We moved ourselves, thankfully not being tackled for an attempted escape.)The only staff member with any warmth was a poor young lady with a cold. We wondered if she should have been serving food, when she was unable to control a cough. The meal itself was almost satisfactory. Suffice to say for the second night at the Castle, we ate out at a nearby establishment. (Much better.) Yea, not a great experience by any means.

Food okay for lunch. Background music was bizarre... music from The Jungle Book movie interspersed with radio ads including one about disposable nappies. Not really pleasant when you're trying to enjoy lunch. We asked to have coffee in the library which was actually rather filthy. I could write my name in the dust around the bar area, in fact I wrote 'Hello' in the dust and sent an email with a photo of the dust to the duty manager, he pointed out to me that Melville Castle rate very highly on Trip Adviser! I wasn't questioning this, I was simply expressing my disappointment in the service, cleanliness & quality of my lunch. The experience really fell short box my expectations and the poor response I received when I wrote to the manager did not impress me with any faith in their customer service. Might be ok to use a Groupon voucher rather than pay full price for poor service. The castle is amazing, the grounds gorgeous but I don't think the staff really care that much

We stayed at Melville for a few days June 2016. The food was very good all the times we ate. Breakfast is good but you aren't told you can order eggs other than scrambled and we had to ask for a small dish to put our marmalade in at every breakfast: not acceptable to have to take the plate over to a large dish of marmalade and put it on there. Basically, service standards aren't very good - the staff aren't trained to a high enough standard ie, anything goes, and often they don't understand what you are saying the first time. I would rate our visit to the Melville 10 stars if I could. First and foremost the food we had was outstanding and obviously cooked by someone who knows their stuff. Portions were large, but so tasty it was sad to leave anything. I had the Ham Hock terrine to start which was excellent and hubby had the prawn cocktail which was a strange choice for him, but he thoroughly enjoyed. We both then opted for the Grilled Sea Bass which was superb and of course I had to try their rustic chunky chips, a very generous portion and lived up to their description. No room left for deserts, but they did look inviting. The Staff are excellent, from the lovely Romanian receptionist Alina (sorry if I got the name wrong) to our great Host Carlos (thank you both). The surroundings are beautiful and tranquil, the welcome brilliant and the interior is comfortable, spotless and beautifully decorated. Also have to make a mention of the lovely muted background music. I had mentioned on booking that we had some mobility problems and we were allocated a table on the ground floor overlooking the Fountain and the pony paddock. Otherwise there are around 10 steps, I believe down to the actual Brasserie. This may seem a little long-winded, but all in all a lunch to remember and can't recommend it enough. This would be an excellent Wedding Venue or for that matter any celebration. Feel we really wasted a day coming along yesterday. The afternoon tea was certainly not up to scratch and quite frankly the worst I've ever had!! Worse thing is I have another voucher to use and feel it's not one that will probably be used. I wanted to treat my friend and I certainly didn't feel that happened. We were at first shown to two bistro tables in what was like a little hallways space for our afternoon tea. A couple were in talks with a staff member about their wedding plans ( very unprofessional) I offered the voucher up at beginning of lunch but was told to wait till the end. But during our lunch a staff member came over and asked for it, not good practice at all!! The afternoon tea was not home baking it was mr kiplings cherry bakewel and a tiny bit of chocolate brownie and another shop bought sponge. Totally uninspiring to look at and worse to eat!! Just because it's a groupon voucher shouldn't mean the standard drops. Also the toilets left a lot to be desired. I scraped myself trying to sit on toilet off a tightly jammed right next to toilet sanitary container. This place appear beautiful on the outside but a place is only as good as its inner workings ie staff and quality of meals and surroundings. Didn't say to staff at time as I didn't want to upset my friend. Not good enough quality for my liking, very unhappy.

Had afternoon tea here in 2015. Very good and no complaints whatsoever. Returned yesterday for afternoon tea which was very disappointing. Sandwiches were stale, fillings tasteless. Shop bought cake and bakewell tarts, dry scones. Really dreadful standard. On the plus side - good coffee, tea and home made brownies. Waitress was very pleasant and helpful.Such a pity that the standard had fallen after our 2015 visit.

I took my mother for lunch for her birthday today. We both ordered Fish and Chips. You probably wouldn't find such horrible chips in the whole Edinburgh - looked reheated (probably from the weekend), soggy, burnt. We complained about it to the waitress but nothing was done to solve the issue. Wasted money and time, wasted birthday lunch.

The entire visit was a shambles. On arriving, the waiter seemed irritated at our presence and grunted rather than spoke to us. Initially we thought they were maybe understaffed and stressed so gave him the benefit of the doubt. It took maybe twenty minutes to give our order. Then we waited. And waited. And waited. An hour passed. A waitress returned to say the main course that I'd been told was gluten free was not, so I changed my order and waited. After an hour and twenty minutes passed (during which time other than our first drinks we had been ignored) and our starters arrived. I was then told the second main course was also not gluten free. Only one meal was - stovies. Not exactly a great choice for lunch. We ate our starters and waited again. After an hour and forty minutes we gave up and left. The diners around us were having similar problems (and had all arrived before we had). There was no acknowledgment far less apology from staff regarding the ridiculously long wait nor the ineptitude of them handling a fairly comment food intolerance (that they'd said they could accommodate at the time of booking). Service was rude, slow and lackluster. You got the idea the staff couldn't stand being there far less dealing with customers. Would not go back, would not recommend it, a huge let down for such a beautiful grand-seeming setting.

My daughter had paid for the afternoon tea voucher for a Mother's Day treat for me, however it was a couple of weeks later we went. Absolutely no finesse, the three tier pllatter was plonked on the table, no communication from the waiter about what was on it - or maybe he was embarrassed!! The sparkling wine was awful, there were tables where it had been left. The sandwiches still had their crusts on, and not completely fresh. And I'm sure you have all tried humus with cranberry jelly!!!! The one forgiving thing was the setting - beautiful setting, and nice room. I would suggest if you are continuing to serve afternoon tea, you should go out and see what the competition has to offer. Definitely would not recommend this.

Great food and friendly service at the Melville Castle Brasserie. The terrine of locally shot game was rich and meaty. The tomato and bssil soup was sweet and aromatic. A couple of haddock stovies for main course and we were well fed. Took tea in a beautiful drawing room. Lovely.

Booked Sunday lunch but was disappointed by very limited and pretty mediocre menu. Despite advertising Sunday roast it was off - and had not been on the menu at all. Whilst I understand things selling out...this was not the case today. They'd simply decided not to feature a Sunday roast at all. When I asked what was on in its stead - the answer was nothing. So my husband had a hard and dry venison burger and I had soggy fish. Service was ok but food was disappointing to say the least.

You get nothing but a good hearty Scottish breakfast to keep you going in the morning then in the afternoon relax by a fire having a few drinks .Then at evening meal time the menu was not too big but just right & as for rating the food it was second to none ( even mr ratatouille himself would be proud of this chef.

We had a very enjoyable day. We opted for the earliest slot of 12pm. this was a good plan as by 1pm it had become quite busy. The food was lovely very fresh and all local. Our waiter John was more than helpful a man happy at his work. Will definitely go back.

I phoned and booked a table for two for the Sparkling Afternoon Tea For Two.I was told that 14:30 has been taken but 14:45 is available. We arrived and was shown to the Library for our Sparkling Afternoon Tea.As we entered the Library there was two tables occupied. At 15:00 we overheard someone saying they have been sitting there for 30 minutes and not seen a waiter or waitress. At 15:30 a waitress come in and started to take the drinks orderWhen every table had their drinks the food was served.Sandwiches was freshly prepared but no wow factor. The cakes was all bought in nothing home-made with the cheapest strawberry jam for the scones. Not once did the waitress come back to ask if we wish to have a top-up of tea or food. Not to rush back for Afternoon tea and makes you wonder if the evening meal will be the same.

We opted to visit Melville Castle as a change to the usual City Centre dining options. The venue is lovely and the atmosphere homely and relaxed. The meal was great and the price very reasonable, with a good selection. The only down side was the service was a little on the slow side and seemed a tad disorganised at times. Other than this, we had a pleasant evening and would recommend giving Melville Castle a try.

Had a lovely relaxed dinner in the atmospheric cellar bistro at Melville Castle. My husbands assures me that his vegetarian selections were just as tasty as i found my meat dishes to be. Desserts were excellent. Service from John the waiter/barman was friendly and efficient, with excellent advice on food choices. I consider that we got good value for our money and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

My friend and I had afternoon tea at Melville Castle and I would thoroughly recommend this. The sandwiches and cake were really fresh, nice tea and lovely Prosecco. We had a deal on Amazon Local but the portions were not any smaller than everyone elses. Our waitress was really nice and efficient keeping an eye on when our tea needed topped up with a hot refill. Lovely afternoon, it was a wet day when we were there but on a nicer day the grounds looked really nice for a wander

Spent an evening at The Brasserie at Melville Castle. Were well looked after by Neil and the staff. A good selection on the menu with two or three fixed menu options. Would like to rate it good as it was better than average.

Friendly informative staff, well cooked and presented tasty food in a fantastic location. Only slight complaint was the house wine which wasn't cold or fresh enough for my taste but in no way spoiled the whole experiance.

Waited almost an hour for food and the reason given was the chef must have been up late watching cricket!? When we made a complaint they didn't get back to us. The food was overpriced for what you got. Beautiful setting shame about food and service

We waited a long time for each course to arrive (we were a party of four and it wasn't very busy at the time), but I do think the food was worth the wait! The vegetarian options suited me and my partner, and the other couple confirmed that the beef was excellent. We enjoyed the leisurely meal and the relaxing atmosphere.

This place is much nicer inside than it looks from outside and was busy on a Wednesday lunchtime. We were given a warm welcome even tho we had not booked. Service was great, Cullen skink delicious, fish & chips did have quite a heavy batter. Would definitely revist when in the area!

A hidden gem in a lovely setting near Edinburgh. Friendly service, the best bacon rolls ever, delicious scones, cakes and traybakes, along with excellent coffee or tea and a variety of soft drinks. A bonus is the craft work on sale made by local artisans. Can't recommend it enough! Eliz
