Nice place, good food, service was slow.

I was in on Christmas Eve (I’m a regular) and was very disappointed to observe the person in charge (small slightly older man dressed very casually) using foul language towards his overstretched bar team. I won’t type the words used here but as a customer this was disappointing to hear. Rather than mucking in to help he was happy to stand and watch them struggle. Poor management style and surely should have been dressed like a manager.

Beautiful place and has great staff service. The price was a little expensive but worth it.

Was OK, staff where pleasant and restaurant was tidy. Went for afternoon tea food was OK but not as good as I've had before elsewhere sandwiches had gone a bit dry round the edges. Cakes on top where meh more tray bake however the scone was very good and fresh. Was disappointed I was charged extra £6 for tea even though it was ment to be included...

We nipped in for lunch at short notice. Really good range of lunch options, including an impressive Buddha Bowl! Tye views out into the terrace are fab.

Went for afternoon tea and was pretty good on the most part, staff where attentive and the food was pretty good. The only real niggle was the cost as it was £24 pp including tea however I was charged £24 plus £6 for the tea? plus a service charge. I don't mind paying a tip but tea was ment to be included...

As locals, we took visiting family for brunch the weekend after Christmas; our reserved table was ready for us, the food was excellent, staff cheerful and attentive, and atmosphere lovely.

So disappointed. First time at The Papermill lasswade tonight with 3 friends. Starters were all ok . 3 Turkey dinners were luke warm/ cold. Gravy was stone cold . Had to be sent back. 1 Fish and chips were fine. My friend had finished her fish by time the Turkey came back. Basically they had tried to reheat the original plates and we had identify who’s plate was who’s by what we had eaten. Not ammused. Ok the Manager apologised and refunded the food and we only paid drinks. However left hungry and disillusioned.

I recently visited “The Paper mill” and unfortunately, my experience of service was quite disappointing. We were served by a young boy named Finn who was very attentive to our needs and went above and beyond his job title. And not only for our table but everyone around us too. Thank you for all your help, it definitely didn’t go unnoticed! Even though our overall experience wasn’t great your kindness and effort made it a bit better. We appreciate it! We ate of the bar menue which was great with no issues! However I would like to raise a concern about the manager named Emma, while eating we were made to feel extremely uncomfortable, (this isn’t the first time she has done this while at The Paper Mill) while being laughed,pointed and stared at…After this she raised a concern, very unprofessionally may I add. About a misleading Email due to being underage however she had no proof leading to this false accusation and my friends and I were all the legal age to drink and had valid forms of ID. She failed to check ID before serving us any drinks, so by this point the business was already in trouble due to them serving us all night. We then proceeded to finish our meal and wait for the bill. The restaurant was relatively quiet and we waited 35 minutes for our bill with our jackets on clear that we were ready to leave. While she was wandered around our table several times, chatting to other staff and looking pretty uninterested to ask if we were wanting more drinks or ready to pay. The customer engagement was very poor and we were pretty fed up waiting as it was getting late. Overall my experience was disappointing however not from all member of staff. I’ve been to this restaurant several times and 9/10 the service is great from all staff minus the manager, it’s highly disappointing and do respectful behaviour coming from someone in a key position. The situation is unfortunate as it puts me off returning in the future.

Excellent venue. A real gem of a place! Service is excellent, and the food is amazing. I really can't fault it.

Friendly and welcoming on arrival. Food was excellent. Thought it was a small menu. Pity the sandwiches were not available after 5pm. It was a particularly chilly night and sitting by a window made it not as cosy as I’d hoped. But all in, I was very happy and will definitely return.

Abysmal service. Drinks order forgotten about and took 30 minutes to get more drinks. No water provided at table, no checking in with us when we had ordered food. Missing steak knife when ordering steak. Delays on general service at every part of the meal. Rubbish place, crap unfriendly staff and the food is below average. Generally ignored our table in favour of the larger party next to us. Took 30 minutes to pay the bill as we were ignored again and not once we're we asked about the meal when paying.

Very busy had to wait a while for food but worth it

This place is much nicer inside than it looks from outside and was busy on a Wednesday lunchtime. We were given a warm welcome even tho we had not booked. Service was great, Cullen skink delicious, fish & chips did have quite a heavy batter. Would definitely revist when in the area!

Afternoon tea is very good and reasonably priced

I went in for a late breakfast at 11am and I had the smashed avocado on toast with poached egg with an americano. My partner had a full breakfast and tea. The food was delicious. The staff were helpful and friendly. The place is light and airy. It has a lovely atmosphere and was very busy. The prices were reasonable. I can't wait to go back as they do lunch and dinner.

This is a great looking place however wouldn't recommend as the customer service is diabolical. We were having a baby shower with roughly 14 people. The area we were allocated was great just up the stairs at the back. However we had to continually ask for someone to take drink orders. We had planned to stay later and have more drinks but it was pointless. Had to ask more than once for someone to take orders then they would come with only half the order would arrive after a good 20minutes. This spoiled the day so I wouldn't recommend for this place because of the very poor service. Go somewhere else.

I would just like to say what a brilliant lunch we had the food was delicious the place was amazing and clean The lady called Monica who served us she was excellent so professional at her job nothing was a problem a great asset to the Paper Mill all the other staff were very friendly and spoke away even though they were very busy We will be back soon definitely 👍 Thanks Monica and staff and the Paper Mill!! Really nice place let down a little by a pretty limited menu. My burger was excellent though.

Booked an afternoon tea as a special birthday treat. Staff were very friendly, cheerful and helpful. The tea itself was a huge disappointment. Cakes were tray bake melts, dry and stale looking. Scones were heavy, hard dry and stale. We sent back the first ones, but the replacement ones although fresher were very heavy and could almost be used as cricket balls. Sandwiches were ok, but sliced cold cooked aubergine ones weren’t appetising at all. Place itself was busy and noisy and not a relaxing experience. Cannot recommend.

Visited for a Birthday Breakfast with my mum and dad. Seated in the booths - the leather seating is looking really worn and needs replaced. The restaurant was very quiet at 10am and a member of staff (can only assume the manager) started rearranging tables in the private area by dragging them along the floor rather than lifting. There was lots of staff around who could have helped to lift the tables. Not a great noise when trying to chat. As for the food it was nice and the service was quick. Apart from the 2nd round of drinks we ordered but we were given an apology for the delay which was due to the computer system.

The slowest restaurant I have ever been to. Booked a table for 12.30pm on a Friday and it was dead. Starters came out relatively quickly, but were overpriced and tiny servings. Then we waited 35 minutes for a main, which was alright, and another 30 minutes for a slice of cheesecake, which came out hard, chewy and overall inedible. We barely touched it. To their credit they took it off the bill for us without asking. The staff were mostly milling about and were hard to get a hold of, even with two people sitting alone in an empty restaurant in the middle of the day. Won't be back.

A visit to The Paper Mill in Lasswade for Sunday lunch has been on the cards for a long time. We phoned to book a table on Sunday morning for 2pm and managed to get one which was great. It’s a very nice restaurant, a bit quirky with a large outside area for that day in July when we get the sun! We started with Black Pudding & Chorizo Bon Bon’s followed by Mac & Cheese with Bacon and Steak Frites. This was all washed down with a nice bottle of red. All basic pub restaurant food and very nice.

We have visited the Paper Mill several times since moving to Bonnyrigg, and we are delighted that we did. The restaurant's location is ideal, and the interior is charming. On one of our visits, we brought my grandmother, who has a severe gluten intolerance. The staff was incredibly accommodating and ensured that she had a safe and enjoyable dining experience. She ordered the fish, which she declared to be the best she had ever tasted, and she experienced no discomfort afterward. The restaurant is also dog-friendly, and the staff is very welcoming to pets. While the location may seem a bit out of the way, I assure you that it is well worth the journey to visit this fantastic restaurant.

An amazing restaurant in the heart of Midlothian. We came here as a family to celebrate my mum and dad's 40th wedding anniversary. The big appeal for this restaurant was the gluten-free options, which was great for my sister. The portion sizes were incredible, and my father (who is very picky when it comes to food) kept raving about how delicious the food for was days after! I personally went with the chicken, brocolli and potatos which were both moist and perfectly seasoned. As for dessert, me and my family all chose the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. Probably one of the best sticky toffee pudding's I've ever had! 100% will be coming back here. Highly recommended!

Very nice setting. On the other hand, service that leaves something to be desired. For breakfast, the dishes did not arrive at the same time for a table of 4, even though we had only asked for pancakes and toast.

Breakfast date with my daughter. Food is consistently good in the paper mill as is the service and atmosphere. There is plenty indoor and outdoor seating and on a nice sunny day the view is lovely outside. There is 2 disabled parking bays right outside and additional parking on a sloped carpark outside too. Booking is advisable on the weekends as it's generally fully booked and very busy.

Never had food but one of those sunny nights we get in Scotland around 5 times a year. Lovely sitting out the back on the deck. Loved it. Service with a smile. What more could you ask for.

This is my local, so have to give 5 stars. Great place, good food and very friendly staff. Dog friendly and Tess the pup also enjoys her lunch too

Absolutely loved this gorgeous little place, that was literally 5 minutes walk from where we were staying! Staff were incredibly helpful, and more than happy to allow us to bring along our own food for our boy, who is extremely particular about what he will eat! Actually had one of the best steaks I have ever eaten here, it was cooked to perfection, exactly how I like it done...overall food and service was exceptional...we really hope to come back again in the future!

Brilliant venue for brunch, lunch or dinner. Private dining area too. Fabulous menu with lot's of local seasonal produce. The French toast with bacon and maple syrup was AMAZING! Serving staff were really friendly and attentive. My only slight criticism was the temperature inside....wee bit chilly....I know it's meant to be summer but we're in Scotland 😃 Will definitely return again and again.

Stopped in for Sunday lunch, although it was off the menu today for some reason. Nice place , we ate in the bar and the barman put the tennis on for us. Food was decent, and the service was spot on.

Booked for afternoon tea and was so disappointed that we refused it and left to go elsewhere for food . I just wish I had taken a photo to show the sparse amount of sandwiches and cakes for 2 people at the cost of £44 ! A couple of cheese sandwiches , egg sandwiches and wafer thin ham sandwiches. 1 sausage roll each , 1 scone and a couple of tiny cakes . You would need to go home and have your dinner as you would be starving ! Ended up leaving and going next door to another restaurant which served lovely food at half the price !

Dropped in as we were passing by. We have seen the paper mill before but had never stopped at it. It always looks busy. Anyway in we went. Nice welcome and it was reasonably busy but as there is a lot of space you don't feel crowded. Nice selection on the menu not to much choice but more than enough. Fish and chips were amazing ( my go to choice ) and my wife had culenskink and she said it was amazing. The staff were friendly and best of all didn't bother us mid bite asking if everything was ok 😂 that's a pet hate of ours. Would recommend and would have no hesitation in popping in again if passing by

This is a great find outside of Edinburgh outskirts for visitors like us. We came in between regular hours so we had staff's full attention. The owner put in a lot of details in the restaurant and food which we appreciate. We spent a quality 1.5 hour fixing hunger and jetlag. Will certainly revisit in our next visit.

Beautiful setting and atmosphere. Love how it’s decorated inside. Friendly staff. My friend and I had the eggs Benedict and the eggs were all overcooked and a bit cold but they were busy so it happens and still tasted nice. I’d still highly recommend and would come here again.

The restaurant is lovely, but the attitude of the person at the reception desk left alot to be desired. He initially tried to turn us away as they were no longer serving breakfast - understandable but did not offer a table for us to order lunch we had to ask if we could order lunch items and he seated us with reticence, making us feel quite unwelcome. Food was good but not worth the lacklustre service.

Ordered the falafel burger and when I first bit into the fries I thought "THIS is what a fry should be like" and, although I didn't think it possible, the burger was even better. Genuinely the best vegetarian burger I have ever eaten. The service was lovely and very efficient with a perfectly appropriate waiting time for the food we ordered, and we sat outside on a sunny day which was absolutely perfect. 11/10, I'm tempted to go back and try more of the delicious menu.

Having had the most fabulous lunch here in April I was really looking forward to dinner. However I was very disappointed in the menu, which I felt was very uninspiring! The staff, however, are amazing, work hard and have great customer service skills. Certainly won’t be back for dinner.

Location is great and the waitresses were nice but pre ordered food arrived 2 hours later. I won't go again.

As title says, really nice food but we requested them to make it special for our anniversary. Instead we were sat by the toilets on a 4-person table and not even acknowledged. We'll go elsewhere next year.

A lovely brunch with friends, a good selection of menu options and very tasty. If I were being picky the service was a little slow but when your having a good chat it's not really an issue.

Was a bit cold today. But otherwise can’t fault it. Waiting staff were excellent and we were very well looked after.

Just back from lunch at the Paper Mill. Food was alright but I have a couple of concerns. Firstly the plate my food was served on had a massive chip out of it but more importantly I ordered a vegan, gluten free bowl( which was very tasty) and found a piece of pasta in it. Fortunately I did not eat it and am only gluten intolerant so it wouldnt have affected me. However I am left questioning food and hygiene practices. Raised it with the waiter who did apologise. I am not sure I want tovreturn here.

Lovely characterful place. Good selection of beers. Food is delicious and very well presented. If you are local or just visiting, I can fully recommend getting a good meal here. I can only imagine it being even more glorious when the sun is shining.

I was here with friends to watch the rugby and stayed on to have a meal. The staff were friendly and helpful. The surroundings were very pleasant and the food was good. If I could change one thing tho, the background music was very much in the foreground - far too loud! This made conversation over dinner almost impossible. Turn the volume down and I will definitely be back.

The burgers were not as good as they usually are. A bit chewy and overcooked. Burger buns burnt. Service very good

Booked the back area in The Papermill for my daughter’s baby shower, it was superb, staff couldn’t be anymore helpful and the food we had was delicious. Area was just perfect for the 20-25 we had there, and private enough but still able to experience the lovely surrounds, highly recommend

Excellent place to have a breakfast, lunch or dinner catch up. We used the private dining area at the back of the restaurant for a birthday dinner. The area has lovely views of the river below. The food was excellent, really delicious and presented beautifully. The staff were very friendly and attentive. They also have some really lovely cocktails which went down well in the bar afterwards. We were lucky enough to land our visit on a live music night (Fridays) where they have a musician or band play.

Love this place. Great breakfasts, lunches and cakes!
