Food was awful tasteless and greasy.

Homely atmosphere, lovely decoration as I appreciate vintagee style. Food was great at a reasonable portion. Staff were nice and polite. I highly recommend this place for everyone who wants to chill out.

Once again, the Bottemley Arms Shelf earn five stars the foodus Excellent the service is excellent. The staff are excellent.. I recently booked an outside catering for a special event and all I can say is that it was absolutely amazing. They made the day very specialfor me and my family. The food was delicious excellent value for money, excellent service they couldn’t have done anymore for me and my family. I would highly recommend them to everyone thank you so much once again Jo and your wonderful team you are all amazing.

Booked here as son visited and couldn’t commend it high enough. Met by two lovely helpful young ladies. Ordered food and within 20 minutes, hot appetising food appeared. Asked numerous times throughout the meal if everything was ok .. yes, absolutely delicious food, well presented and massive portions. Booked for Valentine’s Lunch and know Bottomley’s will be a weekly visit from now on .. need to plough through the extensive menu !!!

Awesome food and the staff were brilliant catered for 22 of us tonight thank you so much guys. Very professional. Mixed grill was enormous new cuts of meat and plenty of extras .burgers were massive and really tasty everyone enjoyed it .And to round it off the cheese cake wow .

A lovely little pub let down by its kitchen … great staff great atmosphere some poor food unfortunately not the first time we had pate(not great) mozzarella sticks (average) garlic bread (disgusting and barely cooked) breaded mushrooms (indescribably awful and burnt) ribs. chilli’s and sausage and mash average and when it came to pudding no cream no jelly ! What a chef ! In addition someone had had an accident and the seat stank of urine just to cap it off !

A little rowdier than we expected from such a small pub but the food and service more than made up for that

Lovely food all so fresh, the range on the menu was amazing- a choice for everyone. Staff were great too, so friendly and personable. I was being asked to be a bridesmaid and the staff came out as a surprise to give us our boxes- so cute! Thanks guys. Will deffo return for the delicious food!

Had to wait til half way through my meal for chips to arrive, then my friends veg didn't arrive til nearly finished, and it was swimming and over faced with mint and gravy, not very busy when we went, had better service when it's busy, will still go back cos when it arrives the food is usually lovely, a one off I'm sure!

Food not bad but not great either

Lovely meal again at Bottomleys, went just after 8pm Sat eve, food was served till 8.30pm. Little quiet at 1st but soon became busy. Great atmosphere, few locals brought their guitars & ukulele and had a little singing session, they were pretty good & later a family Hen party came in. Night was a little random, totally unplanned meal out, but turned into a really lovely evening 🤩💖

Traditional style pub. In serious need of a refurbishment (especially the toilets) However the food is good and plentiful with plenty of choice which keeps the punters happy. Friendly staff. Car park. Good choice of drinks. Vegetarian choices are available.

Great little gem of a place. Didn't expect food to be this tasty and so generous. I'd highly recommend everyone to stop there for a nice meal. They really look after you, and it feels like you're at someone's house having a friendly meal, rather than in a pub. I will come back to try a different meal for sure :) Well impressed 👍😁👍

Been for a catch up lunch with friends today, a really lovely little traditional pub. Good choice of beers, lager and gins. Staff were really friendly and did a great job, left us to it, no rush to order and no rush to get us out the door but still attentive with checking in as to whether we needed any drinks etc throughout our visit. Food was lush, really decent portions and food cooked well and good quality. Would highly recommend and we will definitely make sure to visit again!

Sadly, the first greeting was, "Are you eating. As we said, no, just a drink it was oh right what do you want. And once served it was you can sit there only. Pointing to a couple of tables crammed in a corner. And when you looked around, every table was set set up for food. It's such a shame as I used to be a good proper pub.

Went in yesterday with my partner his mother and my daughter. Was very impressed with the customer service, they where very attentive and eager to please. All the food was very tasty, fresh and delivered at a fast and high quality. The pub itself is a gorgeous traditional pub, inviting, good atmosphere also nice and clean. Will definitely be returning and recommending to others.

We go to the Bottomley's Arms quite regularly even if we haven't booked thay will always accommodate us. Food service and atmosphere is always first class xx👍❤️ 💯

First time trying this pub - I'm from Leeds but staying in Clayton for the weekend looking after a friends dogs. Fancied pub tea and after having a look online I chose this place. Good variety of beer, ale, wine and soft drinks. I was sat at a table and given a menu and my drink brought over to me. It's quite a large menu but I chose the Chicken Fajitas with a portion of chips (I didn't know it came with a handful of chips already). It took longer to come out than your typical greene king / wetherspoon pubs, but that's because its fresh and made to order instead of microwaved, and they did have a large table too, so was glad I was accommodated as I was on my own. The fajita's came out sizzling, the portions were extremely generous especially for the price! They came with 3 torillas, 3 dips (Salsa, Garlic mayo and sour cream) all were lovely and the salsa was clearly homemade, as well as a basket of chips and salad garnish. Taste was incredible, I really enjoyed it and had some to bring home too. The staff were very friendly and attentive too. It's a great historic pub, clearly ran well and the food is very tasty. I will be travelling from Leeds to visit here again in the future without a doubt.\

What can i say about this place. Beautiful food every time I have visited, it's an old world kinda place, no fine dining but the sevice and food are great. I had the black pudding and smoked bacon starter in a mustard sauce and it was special a must try. Haddock goujon sandwich on granary bread with a beautiful portion of home cooked chips and a large portion of super crunchy onion rings. Please try this place. For a foodie like me this place is perfect

We popped in on Sunday for the first time with the hopes of a table to which the lovely waitress found us one. We were greeted with a warm welcome and big smiles. We were so pleased that the full menu was available as well as the Sunday dinner! We both ordered the steak sandwich which came with cheese, onions and mushrooms. Went to order chips and onion rings extra but was told it was included in the price! The food came in a timely manner and wow! The plate was huge; big thick tiger baguette, home made chips and home made onion rings, salad and coleslaw. The steak was so soft, melt in the mouth, delicious! We were so full and had no intention of dessert until we saw the table next to us have theirs bought out! so we ordered sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie. Home made and huge portions again! 2 mains, 2 desserts, 2 pints and a coke for under £40 - bargain! Pleasurable experience from start to finish, the staff were so lovely which is wonderful to see. So glad we popped in on the hop because we will definitely be back! Thank you so much!

Could not rate this place any higher - the staff are amazing, the food is great. They did a brilliant job of hosting my family and I for a memorial meal and went above and beyond when my mother-in-laws phone was left! We'll definitely be back!

Me and my partner came here for food on NYE, we heard the food was nice. The food arrived and it was very bland, it didn't look very nice when it turned up. Me and my partner are not very well now and wasn't after we ate the meal which resulted in our night being spoilt :( unfortunately we will not be returning. On a positive note the staff are very nice and friendly.

Very much a favourite local venue. Food freshly cooked to order, so it can take a few minutes to be ready, but well worth the wait. Lovely staff and excellent food. Can't go wrong.

First time here,nice cosy traditional boozer.nice pint of John Smith's or 3, Family of 4 ,All had starters which were very good 👍,and 4 mains .excellent food,we had no complaints (and I can be a bit picky).The portions are big, no complaints here . Was given a warm welcome by the lady behind the bar. Definitely glad we tried this pub out,we will be back ,our new go to pub for a midweek meal. Oh and a reasonably extensive menu..👍👍

I would recommend paying a visit to this unassuming pub, the staff are all very friendly and attentive. The food is excellent, has a good menu and great tasting. We will be returning next time we are in the area. If you live locally and haven't been to eat the you are missing out.

Super nice pub with amazing good quality food at very reasonable prices. I had a special off the board, a T bone steak with garlic mash and it was superb. My chunky Spam fritter starter was also very nice, sent me straight back to my childhood and were super nice.

Great staff gorgeous food and a lovely warm atmosphere, my parents Golden Anniversary the other night was lovely , a great night by all .ps The size of the portions of the food ...WOW.... also a good variety on the menu & specials board. Worth every penny and a very good price for 10 people .I defo will go again and recommend them to anyone......

Popped in for tea and wish I hadn’t. Ordered Yorkshire pudding beef wrap roast potatoes and veg. The wrap was hard on the edges the veg had a strange taste but with the potatoes being raw that was unacceptable. Another member of my party ordered burger which was black on one side! Needless to say he is ill today and not attending school! Will never return here…avoid!

Beautifully cooked food; genuinely home cooked to an extremely high standard. Without doubt the best pub meal I've ever had, and better than the majority of posh restaurants I've been to, all at extremely reasonable prices. Desserts are to die for. Staff were friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much trouble, real ale was perfect. I'll be back on a regular basis from now on!

Been here a few times. The food was good . On my last visit ( last night) we didn't get chance to eat because of the time we waited. We waited over an hour for our food . It wasn't until I approached the bar and wanted to pay my bar bill that I was told our food was ready....sorry too lated! My partner was diabetic and needed the food. But we we're not informed of any delays or updated by staff why the food was late. There we're a few groups that had waited and approached the bar because of the late food. We decided to leave without eating. To say I was angry is an understatement. We won't be going there again.

Breaded Chicken Kiev.was ordered, all it was soggy breaded coating and Chicken was dry the garlic butter was poured over the top, wasn't nice, garlic mushrooms they was only bout 2 mushrooms cut up very small portion, big chunk of bread instead of sliced portion, waited far too long for it to come out of the kitchen , won't be back for a long time, you need to find a proper chef

Lovely pub with reasonably priced food

Food was good. Massive portions which some would enjoy but myself found a little overwhelming and I have a pretty good appetite. My first drink of cola was flat and not very cold, however my second was very fizzy...think they must have been serving from a bottle supply rather than a tap. The decor looks dated and needs a pick me up. Worth going and giving it a try. Bring an empty tummy!

I grew up in the village of Shelf and the Bottomleys always had a good reputation for good food in a friendly atmosphere. I since moved to Hampshire & it’s always a pleasure to visit the ‘Bots’ again. The warm welcome, great food and friendly service still remains. The food is homemade, delicious, and portions generous. All served with genuine Yorkshire hospitality (I miss that living the the south). Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Been coming here for Sunday lunch for years, don't know what's gone wrong maybe they have change hands. Roast potatoes not nice at all neither was the veg & very slow service. Not sure if i will go back ?

Food normally fantastic but got hot roast beef was ment to be white farmhouse but was just white sliced,beef was lovely though and the chips used to be really nice golden brown with skin on what I remember but the chips was pale and not very nice 🙁

We have used Botts many times but have found recently the food is disappointing. Not up to the standard it has been in past years.

Food was a lot better than I expected. I didn't expect it to be bad, I expected it to be standard pub food. I got the Prawn Curry, and I'm not lying when I say this, but it was fantastic! I poured it all over my chips and swept it up with the poppadom and Naan. I'd have preferred a bigger naan, but that's because I'm a greedy C. We ate in the outside earing area as the sun was beaming down. I will 100% be going back! I 4*ed the atmosphere just because there weren't many people in, but I'm sure it's probably 5* when there's a few more in.

I had chilli con carne with chips. The chilli was home made and quite mild so good if you dont like food too spicy. Hubby got mixed grill and he loved it. Staff are friendly and attentive and not overbearing. Looked to be child friendly, too.

I have dined out many times at pubs, cafes and restaurants and true, good pub dining is few and far between. When I came here last week, I had the mixed grill and was very impressed. Even though the meal is £18.50, it was worth every penny. The food is absolutely fantastic, I highly recommend it. The service was very good and the staff were very attentive. I will definitely be back here. Also, the portion is an absolute belly buster. I was full the next day.

ab fab food & it is amazing & great value for money. as someone with a smaller appetite I asked tonight & they can do smaller portions for some dishes, they also offer a take home service if you cannot manage it all

Great find. As a fussy eater I normally struggle to eat out. Nothing was too much trouble. Food is reasonably priced, portions are more than plentiful. Staff are pleasant and very helpful.We'll be back very soon. Cheers

We were in this area for the weekend in our motorhome from South Wales, so we walked to one pub which was closed, so we had a 20min. Walk to the Bottomleys Arms. On arrival, we sat at a table, and a lady came over and asked us if we'd booked as they had a big party coming in and all tables were reserved. We were very disappointed and told her we had walked from the other pub so she asked the manager if there was anything they could do. They then got us a table and we had beautiful meals and all the staff were really friendly. Thank you so much to the Bottomleys arms

Had my Dad's 80th Birthday Bash here tonight from start to finish they couldn't do enough for us. They decorated the space we were having for me, the food was amazing big portions and value for money. The bar staff and waitresses were very helpful asking if it was OK and if we needed anything. One waitress even spoke to our younger members asking if they were having a good time. All in all a really fantastic night was had by all 20 of us will definitely be coming back again for my mums 80th Birthday in August.
