The Botanist Bar & Restaurant Exeter in Exeter

Took 40 minutes for food to come and they forgot deserts and they were stood around talking

Do not book The Botanist Exeter for a celebration meal. I booked The Botanist Exeter, to celebrate an intimate wedding. It was a group of 24 people. I contacted the restaurant by email two months before the date and to request certain edits to be made to the menu and seating requests etc. They over promised by email and under delivered on the day. Apparently the staff working that day had not been informed, by whoever I was emailing, that we had made requests. The service was slow, food overcooked and some of guests ended up paying for food they did not order. I have attempted to contact The Botanist but have been ignored so far. All I want is for a complaint to be made so other people do not have celebrations dampened by poor communication.

Friendly staff, in a good location and easy to.find. The food was good. I had a chicken ceasar. Shame the service wasn't as good. Table was sticky and needed a proper clean and i asked a server to wipe it down. But all my server used as a dry paper towel. My server never came up to my table to ask if everything was OK. It would have been the least bit appropriate to be asked how everything is or if I needed anything etc. So when paying for the bill, I asked to take the service charge off. Keep in mind I had to wait almost 45 mins for my ceasar salad.

Went in sat for 10-15 minutes with no service. 👍 left without ordering

Disgusting. Mold and mildew in every nook and cranny of machineries, especially the ice machine. Then-manager shrugged it off. Got told off for wiping the bottles of its dust and grime (normal protocol for any self-respecting bars, not even Coolings is this disgusting and they’re a dive bar). Would not throw a red nickel their way.

Clean, cozy, food is delicious, waiters are friendly and attentive. Of the minuses, the table for 2 people is very small.

Bad service, if i could give 0 Stars I would. Its too dark and the music is too loud.

Visited on a Saturday, and the restaurant was extremely busy. Our waiter was Josh who was extremely attentive and apologetic on the wait for our drinks and food. Once our drinks arrived they were delicious (more ice than drink, so I suggest you ask for no ice! And get the ice separate) The food did take sometime to come out, The Botanist are famous for their hanging kebabs, which we all had (but different flavours) they were really tasty (thanks to Josh who told us that there was a little hole ontop of the stand to pour the garlic butter through. We have visited numerous times and have never been shown that). It was really nice to sit in a restaurant and actually have great customer service, well done Josh.

Popped in for a quick pint of sharp harp. Place was quieter than the local crem......I'll put it down to being a Tuesday night!

The food was lovely but not impressed with the service charge being added on top as standard and special requests as was a birthday which no one acknowledged

Food was really nice enjoyable. There was a slight issue with our order, but the manner in which the staff apologies and recovered was absolutely first rate! We went on a Saturday evening, and a live band was playing. Unfortunately the music was so loud, conversation at our table was almost impossible. The toilets are shared with a bar and club upstairs, meaning by 8pm they were in a disgusting state. I would definitely go again for lunch or on a weekday evening, but the toilets and live music would put me off visiting at the weekend.

Sadly this was not a good visit we arrived having not booked a table were told we could only have a high table as everything else was booked up however throughout th whole visit not one person sat next to us on any of the tables my little one had a high chair and was very low down. Onto the food we ordered hanging kebabs when served the chicken was raw and I don’t mean a little pink I mean it was raw to the point it sounded like you were cutting the chicken to fry and it had touched the fryer. As anyone we complained my 9 month old daughter had just eaten some of that the guy offered us another meal to which we weren’t sure after what we just had but decide to have a burger again most was left think we were just put off 3 guys one at a time visited our table and even said how bad it was what we were served one said it was two head chefs and it shouldn’t have happened the other said it’s cause it’s grad week piss poor excuse and the other guy said he was sorry and he would make sure we didn’t pay for anything he disappeared and we were produced with a £54 bill and then tried adding a £6 service charge to which we refused to pay but still had to pay £54. Needless to say one of us has a bad tummy and the other is being sick Absolutely disgusting

Single handedly the worst hospitality / service I’ve ever received. No one has a clue what’s going on. Asked questions to the gentleman behind the bar about the menu etc and was told he didn’t usually work Sundays and openly admitted he didn’t have a clue. Wasn’t sure if I could order food to upstairs or not. Wasn’t sure what was on the menu as it was ‘reduced’. Absolute shambles.

Food was ok had the hanging kebabs to share. The staff were very slow to take order and wouldn't have minded if busy and had offered us water as appeared to be case with the other diners that had entered the restaurant. The 3 staff members where chatting amongst themselves and appeared our table of two had been forgotten. After waiting and trying to make eye contact to no avail had to go up and politely disturb the conversation. Would have been happy to place order at the bar if able. The atmosphere and ambience was lovely.

Food was just above average, the service was good, staff are very nice & professional.

Good service and atmosphere, live band playing Friday night buts is not too loud so we can keep a conversation at dinner. Food was not impressive, had the pork belly kebab and was kind of dry. My friend didn't like her steak either but the rest of the group seemed happy with their food.

After booking a table at the botanist after previously being here we expected a pleasant afternoon of drinks however the Bouncer on the door of the 6th of July was extremely rude and discriminating towards military especially when shown MOD ID! So we went back to our hotel and got his driving licence thinking that they didn’t accept military. We provided his driving license and he didn’t even give it a look and said no military are allowed here. So we had entered top floor of the botanist, bypassing the security and had a chat with a senior member of the staff who also was concerned with our ordeal. This manager was accommodating and understanding and offered us drink on the house. Our experience was therefore made better. However this discrimination needs to be addressed. The original concern of the staff was specifically royal marine recruits which is understandable however the security did not at all specifying nor care who we were and seemed on a power trip. In conclusion the door staff were very bad and the manager had amended the situation l, (if you can make it through the back door).

Lovely place, lively atmosphere. Decent music. Ordered a sirloin steak, it was cooked to perfection. Chips were spot on as well. Thumbs up for the food. The staff on the whole make you feel welcome. Our server katie was just the best. She even told us that they had a smoking area upstairs. Beats going out for a smoke as you can sit, smoke and have a nice alcoholic beverage. I would definitely recommend this place for the food, atmosphere, and the warmth of the staff.

Went with my other half for some food n drinks. We we're served by a lovely young and bubbly girl named Katie. She kept the drinks flowing all night, and was good at banter. If only all staff everywhere were as funny and also well informed about menu items as she was. Very rare that you meet someone who's so down to earth and welcoming. Will we be paying another visit? Most definitely a yes!!

The Botanist in Exeter is a quintessential British restaurant with a touch of pub ambiance. It's very laid-back and cosy, making it an ideal spot for having drinks and chatting with a large group of friends.

Nic place, a bit pricey but pretty good service

Firstly, I stood out like a sore thumb compared to the other 'hip' patrons. I am neither young or slim. There should be a sign on the door. I tried to blend in by using the cool app way of ordering a drink. I pulled out my Nokia 7650 snapped a photo and after only 2 hours and signing my house over I managed to order two drinks. Yay!! I'm a pro at this. Next, we waited, and waited and waited some more. Now, not only am I old and fat, I'm high maintenance and don't have a tattoo of a dragon on my chest for nothing. The wait put me in a very bad mood. After FORTY minutes, I went and cued up for another 20 to tell them I wanted my money back. When I was just about to be served I saw a waitress with my order and my bad mood instantly dissipated. Finally, our drinks. Unfortunately, after a few sips of my strawberry and elderflower mojito I realised I wasn't cool and hip at all and should have stuck to what I know. A rum and coke. Well, I wasn't going to hang around for another 3 hours for that so we drank and left. Sadly, we had waited so long spiders thought we were part of the decor and made themselves at home on my partners head. We've named them 'Cider' and 'moijito' so we never forget our day out. (At our age, that's very possible). The Botinist is not for us this time. Maybe we'll try again in the winter. If we don't dehydrate by then.

We went out for dinner last night for my girlfriends birthday, and for the most part it was a good evening. The atmosphere was nice and our main course really good. However, when we asked to look at the desert menu, the waitress told us the kitchen was closed, this was at 22:05, and we checked their website and it said the kitchen didn’t close until 23:00. The waitress didn’t even let us know that the kitchen was closing so we could have ordered a desert in time. So we just said we didn’t want anything else, but then 5 minutes later she come over again and asked us the same question, ‘can I get you guys anything else’ as if she was trying to rush us out. It was a shame as it had been a lovely evening up to that point, and the food was really good, but it felt like it all came to an abrupt ending because the waitress wanted to go home.

We had a really nice time on Saturday evening. There was a great atmosphere and the live music was great. Our food was good, in particular dessert. Unfortunately our starter didn’t get ordered (the waitress at the time didn’t write anything down when we gave our order) and there wasn’t much of an apology or an attempt to correct the issue. We were just told it wasn’t on the order. This put a bit of a dampener on a lovely evening.

Popped into The Botanist for a drink and bite to eat with my wife after a hard afternoon of retail therapy. The place was lively and busy, and Josh, our waiter, was great. However, when the drinks arrived, my wife’s champagne was dead flat. When we pointed this out, they opened a new bottle - which was the right thing to do but the first glass was obviously flat so I don’t understand why they served it in the first place. Then the food arrived (we both chose Bang Bang Chicken Salad) and her chicken was RAW inside and mine was cold. The manager and staff were very apologetic and offered to remake both dishes but when these arrived, they were just reheated and over-cooked stodgy mush. We left after an hour without eating anything except a shared bowl of pork scratching (and without paying the presented bill) and we won’t be going back.

Came here for my 18th birthday with my family, been here before and instantly knew i wanted to come here again and it did not disappoint. everyone loved it, the food was great and our server josh was amazing, very patient and helpful throughout the evening. 10/10

Had a booking for my daughters 18th birthday but was denied entry because I defended my self outside against an individual that was agressive towards me and my children because I whistled on the street leading up to the restaurant, absolutely appalling and unjust decision, will never ever go there again.

I ordered the bang bang chicken noodle, noodles were undercooked and too big also the chicken was very tough inside. Pitta bread was solid couldn’t eat it and the hanging kebab was tasteless. Staff were really great and drinks were lovely.

Went to have lunch here on Easter Sunday. We booked but there wasn't any need as it was pretty quiet. The staff were really friendly and the food great. 2 of us are vegan and there was plenty of choice on the menu. Would definitely come back.

I had the bang bang noodle salad it was bit disappointing it had same things miss that where on menu. It needed more doing to it be worth price another else really enjoy rest of the food

Absolutely stunning service!! Staff were exceptional and need a pay rise! They’d run out of mint sauce for the lamb, and one of the staff ran to a local supermarket to get more due to our disappointment. Lovely people, very friendly and warm, would 100% recommend!

Came to the botanist for food today with my family. All our food was delicious and Hayden our waiter had impeccable customer service… thank you so much! :)

I decided to have my daughter's 16th Party here and we are so glad we did. The buffet food was absolutely gorgeous, lovely friendly atmosphere, really lovely and attentive staff that really looked after us all and the table was absolutely perfect!! We all had the best time celebrating!! Will definitely be returning in the future, thank you so much to you all.

Hanging kebab great but chips over cooked, second meal; chips fine but fish overcooked.. Unpleasant smell where we were seated, but was moved elsewhere with no problem. Staff polite, decor beautiful, but food wasn't worth the money.

Shockingly disappointing. £50 for a beer and a very basic burger. Save the money go to weatherspoons or get a burger king and a can of Stella, will be better quality. I say this as person who doesn't really like burger King. Used to go to the botanist and they had incredible food and decent drinks. Was a bit pricey but well well worth it. Huge dive in quality since then (about a year). Staff were great though!

Fantastic place to visit for not only a great selection of drinks but also the opportunity to see the drinks made with very pleasant staff.

We have been to the Botanist a few times and have always loved it. The staff are lovely and the restaurant itself is very impressive. The food is usually great, but this time it was a little bit disappointing and underwhelming. Little bit dry and tasteless. The manager was, however, very understanding about this! Sadly won’t be going back :((

I’ve been to other Botanists before and had a good meal but sadly it wasn’t to be this time. We were seated at our booking time of 8.15pm and whilst the table was pleasant it was very crammed, had to squeeze in with other diners having to move their chairs to allow us to take ours. We ordered and had 2 very nice cocktails which I felt were reasonably priced. We order bang bang cauliflower and crust mushrooms as a starter. They arrived in a reasonable time but were very disappointing. In a blind tasting you would have been hard pushed to identify the filling amongst the huge amount of ‘batter’ coating both these dishes. There was little flavour, other than the taste of oil and batter. Our plates were cleared by our friendly waitress and we ordered 2 glasses of wine which arrived shortly after. Then a long wait ensued before I managed to ask a passing waitress if our food was on the way. By this point we had been there for over an hour and finished the wine we had ordered for our main course. Some confusion from the waitress followed and another, seemingly more senior waitress, attended to us to advise us that our meals were being rushed through now. So we had essentially been forgotten about. I suggested a complimentary glass of wine to accompany our meal and this was eventually provided. The main course arrived after another 10 minutes. The chicken katsu curry was pleasant and the house salad was excellent. The lamb kebab was pretty underwhelming and the fries weren’t exactly hot… or particularly tasty. But by this point we just wanted to leave as we had spent a long day travelling to get to Exeter. At this point no staff seemed to be around, after another 15 minutes or so we did eventually manage to have our table cleared and I asked for the bill. Now comes the hilarious part! The bill was received and I advised I would not be paying it in full but felt 50% was reasonable given the lack of service, poor food and being forgotten about. The waitress disappeared again and about 10 minutes later a chap came over and sat down at our table, seemingly to ‘negotiate’ about how much we were wiling to pay!!!! He turned out to be the Manager and whilst he was pleasant and friendly he blamed the issues on having new chefs and also on the fact that ‘everyone books a table for dinner between 8 and 9pm’. Fancy that!!! Wanting to book a table on a restaurant at dinner time!!! I was quite taken aback by the implication that this was somehow the customers fault! I advised what I would be paying and he left our table, rather disgruntled, and send the waitress back with the card machine so we could finally be released from this place!!! What made it extra funny is that the same chap was also doing an excellent job or negotiating bills with the 2 other tables remaining around us who had had a similar experience!!!!! One lady was actually getting quite heated in her discussions with him about just how terrible the whole experience had been! I don’t like to berate waiting staff as I don’t believe poor service is always down to them…. It’s often down to training and working together as a team, clearly something that isn’t happening given how quickly the Manger blamed his chefs for the issue and the punters for daring to book a table at dinner time. We were in Exeter for the weekend and ate in another few places and had pretty good service and delicious food. As is often the case, independents usually provide great service! Would I go back to the Botanist… probably not based on this experience.

What a great place, visited here on Saturday for pre dinner drinks. Wish we could have stayed there. Great live music. Fab drinks including non alcoholic. Staff were so helpful and friendly. We will be returning!!

Came here with family for a meal and drinks and we absolutely loved it. Fantastic service with such attentive and friendly staff. Delicious food and tasty drinks. Definitely worth the visit and will come again. 😊

Unfortunately I would say the overall experience was certainly nothing like my experiences in London or Manchester. My Mother was unable to lock the door in the WC as all locks were off, no toilet paper was available in any of the cubicles and a couple of young ladies entered the toilets to powder there noses with white powder. My Mother made sure staff members were alerted about the toilets and one member said she will pass it on! I mean why not take ownership and at least put some toilet paper in! As for the overall service, we had arrived early at 1:30pm (table was booked for 2pm) we was advised that we could stand at the bar and have a drink which we was happy to do, we stood at the bar and the barman then said who sent you here as its table service - I then highlighted the lady sent us over and we was then served a drink. 2pm soon came and we was seated I then had to wave my hand at 2:30pm to ask if we could order a drink and when they arrived the waitress had dribbled it all over the show so we then had cocktail juice running down the unbalanced table.. I asked a passing waiter for a cloth and that never arrived and then had to pin another member of staff to then order food (food was actually pleasant) but again our condiments never arrived and needless to say had to chase for further drinks. We decided not to stay any longer and left to find an alternative.

We arrived to our table with not enough seats. Our table was right next to a live band which started at exactly the same time as the rest of my guests including my 70 year old mum & her sister who’s 80! I complained and we was moved. Our booking was for 7 and we didn’t get our food till gone 8pm. Two of my guests had to wait another 15 minutes after ours was brought out!! Waitress service very slow we ended up going to the bar for drinks. A little disappointed, hope our next visit will be better as we do enjoy the food.

Love this place the food is great,only downside you can't book an outside table less then 10 people,which is quite frustrating.Very slow service in all areas.

Expensive for the standard of the 3 different meals we received. The side dish of pigs in blankets was soggy uncaramalised bacon that had fallen off the sausage into the bowl of liquid.The vegetables were less cooked than al dente ! Had much better quality in a ready meal !

We went for my birthday. We all had the hanging kebabs except my 8 year old daughter who had the kids burger. The food was delicious and so was the cocktails. We had cookie doughs, a banoffee sundae and a brownie for dessert and all was just as good. Definitely be back soon xx

Great afternoon/evening cooperate event. The team were excellent and catered for our every need.

This place is gorgeous. It was clean and the atmosphere was electric. The food was incredible, we tried the cheeseburgers with ‘properly seasoned fries’ and we were blown away at how delicious our meal was. All of the team were so friendly, in particular Edward, who had incredible energy and kept us smiling all night. The best part of our visit was the strawberry mojitos, we’ll definitely be back for more!☺️❤️

Food: I ordered the Red Thai Prawn Hanging Kebab, and my fiance ordered the Roast pork belly. Both arrived cold. The Prawns were tough where they had been sitting getting cold. The roast pork was tiny, the gravy was thick and frozen cold, and the veg was cold. Portion size and quality were terrible for the £17-£20 per main course. Service: The waiter, Edward, dropped his keys and kicked them across the room as we entered. Does not show a high appreciation or standard for his place of work. There were two waiters and one cook who clearly struggled with the restaurant half full. Edward did act quickly when we told him about our food, but it all came back microwaved. The gravy had boiled over the small jug, the veg had wilted down to nothing, and the glazed Carrots were shrivelled down to nothing. My fiance, who is a chef, refused to eat the dish. Edward was understanding and apologised profusely. We begrudgingly paid the bill even with 25% being taken off. The 25% did not cover the untouched roast pork that we still paid for. We would have argued it, but at this point, we did not want the fuss. Atmosphere: The lift was out of service. The restaurant was half full, with everyone sitting on one end by the windows. When Edward tried to sit us amongst all the other customers, I requested we sit further away, which he had no problem accommodating for. The restaurant felt borderline uncomfortably cold. Overall poor experience: We went to slim chickens after, spent half the money, had a much better customer experience with the staff and was served HOT food. Avoid the Botanist, go to Slim Chickens.

To celebrate my partner's birthday, we went to The Botanist for food and drinks in the evening. The service was faultless from Michaela. She was very attentive and friendly to our table, and the quality of food from the chef was excellent. Fresh and tasty kebabs! Botanist Bingo was a plus and we all really enjoyed the live music. Overall, an amazing evening and a great atmosphere.

Not a great experience tbh. The place looks amazing, but it was a coldish winter eve and we sat outside, and although the heaters were on unless you sit directly beneath them, you can't feel them, so I'd suggest them adding a few more. The fire pits weren't working and not a lot of room for 13 of us to sit inside. The staff were very overworked and not a lot of them. We waited over 20 mins to get served each time, and they looked stressed and were a little abrupt .. more staff and more heating outside would make the experience a whole lot better

Hanging chicken kebab with Raw chicken! Responded very well and replaced but early hours the following morning went down with food poisoning

Got locked in the toilet with no apology, not a single male toilet had a working lock 1 got me trapped the rest didn’t lock at all. The food and drinks took ridiculous times to arrive and one member of the group had his food arrive 15 minutes later than everybody else, then we got charged an automatic 15 percent service charge for terrible service

Our first time… although the food was very good and the staff were very attentive the place was let down by the shocking state of the toilets. There was water on the floor in the cubicles, no toilet paper, no push plunger in more than one of them. Finally the cocktails, although tasty, were more ice than drink. We will not be going back mainly because of the toilets. I question the hygiene!!

Food was very good, staff lovely. Only criticism was the restaurant was cold. A couple of ladies behind us kept their coats on! Would certainly visit again.

I have to say that the staff at the Exeter Botanist on Wednesday 3rd January at lunchtime were exceptional. It was my daughters 16th birthday and through no fault of their own a delivery of meat hadn’t arrived and after we ordered an alternative choice to be told they had run out of this option too they went above and beyond to provide us with a lovely lunch. To top it off they unexpectedly came out with a personalised birthday dessert board, to make it extra special. Brilliant staff and lovely food. Thank you. We will be back.

Thank you to Jess our waitress for her hospitality and attentiveness on New Years Eve. Amazing staff, beautiful food as always and all the staff were fantastic they couldn’t do much more for us. Full vegan three course meal and prosecco, thank you to the chef who was on his own in the kitchen yet produced fast and delicious food. 10/10 will be back thank you guys so much

Decor looked tired. I had to change my chair as it was wobbly and the leg was about to fall off. Very loud atmosphere, staff took a while to check us in to table then to take our food order. I ordered the halloumi kebab and it was over cooked and hard and like rubber. We didn’t complain to wait for another meal as we had another engagement to get too after the meal so was pushed for time to wait again for a replacement. One of party members was Gluten Intolerant and we’re went told about scanning the qr code until she came to take our order. I made a point of mentioning a GF member on the booking so surely, when the menus were given out it would have been better to tell us then about scanning the qr code. She had to change her mind and felt rushed into choosing something as we’d all ordered before she was told how to see the gf options. Wouldn’t go again. I have been to the Botanist in Cardiff and had a completely different experience there. It was lovely.

Service was very slow & waitress not very communicative. They had also run out of several cocktails we wanted to order.

The waitress called Katie was brilliant and really helped make our Christmas Eve dinner very special. So helpful and cheerful 😁

It was a nice evening but they had ran out of chicken so my husband could not have what he wanted which was a shame as it was his first time and he has said he would not go back in a hurry.

Perfect ambience and the location is perfect coz it’s just within the city centre. A great place to chill after shopping or roaming around. We were satisfied with the food choices that we ordered and the drinks that was suggested. We really enjoyed our time and will definitely recommend to friends. 😊

Toilets were a disgrace, missing toilet seats and smells of urine

Disappointed that our second visit wasn't as memorable as our first! Appreciate that it's a busy time of the year, but at a 7.30pm table, we were told that a lot of options on the menu were unavailable. Think I counted about 4 pieces of pork belly on my hanging kebab. Toilets need better attention...no running water in hand basin, cracked mirrors...all makes the experience!

It was during the festive season late night shopping. Surprised by quite a lot of drunken noise. On the other hand though it is a bar though so probs shouldn't have been. Our childeren loved the meal and didn't seem to mind.

please do not go here. Hour and a half wait for mediocre and overpriced food, it doesn’t take that long to microwave a kid’s meal. Offered us free drinks as an apology for the wait which they never actually served us, the cooks aren’t wearing gloves, portions are minuscule compared to what they are priced at. Their child seats are also incredibly dangerous as they only have one buckle, they then complained after we put the baby in a pram instead even though we were seated at a table next to the window and out of anybody’s way.

Food was delicious, cocktails was delicious, staff was friendly enough just extremely slow waiting 30 mins + for a drink and non attentive they disappeared for a long time and we had to hunt them down every time we wanted a drink

Noisy, draughty, slow drinks service. Hanging kebab was tasty but bit of a rip off for the price.
