The Bolton Arms in Richmondshire

This is one of the friendliest places I’ve stayed the staff are so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent and a well stocked bar. The room was very clean and comfortable and the views around are first class. I would definitely recommend and will definitely be making a return visit.

We visited the Bolton Arms twice, on a short break to Marske. First impressions always count and from the moment we walked in we were made to feel welcome. Although there were only two real ales to select from (the bar was small so it's understandable) they were both excellent. The view from the beer garden at the rear was stunning. Don't miss it. Onto the restaurant and although a small menu it was full of classic British choices. I chose the Lamb and my wife chose the Steak pie. Simple enough food but top quality served up by attentive and friendly staff. Our second visit was just as successful on the food front and again we were highly impressed by the pubs friendly staff. When we return to North Yorkshire we will definitely be going to this friendly little pub/restaurant.

Superb Sunday Lunch the best I’ve had in years. The Landlord & landlady were extremely friendly & sociable, the landlord even very kindly gave us an extra Yorkshire pudding to accompany our lunch. We both had a starter, myself the traditional prawn cocktail & my partner the black pudding, both very tasty. I had the 3 meat choice Beef, Pork & Lamb. I cannot express how delicious & tasty each meat was to eat, perfectly cooked with sausage meat to die for. The pub wasn’t busy but with this offering customers should have been queuing at the door come 12pm to be sure of a seat with this quality of food. I’ve eaten a lot of Sunday lunches in many varied establishments, this is by far one of the best I’ve had in many years, one I would certainly go back for if I was in the vicinity. If you are ok the region for top quality food then don’t hesitate to drop in here because you don’t go wrong if you want great food. Being in the trade myself, you reply on people leaving a good review if they’ve enjoyed their visit. I’d happily say to people, make a bee line for this pub because you can’t find much better if you want good quality home cooked food.

Having driven past the lane end of Downholme village for years, we took the plunge and were not disappointed. A cosy and warm pub with a good atmosphere, just perfect for a January lunch out. Our meals were delicious and will certainly be back, many thanks, keep up the good work.

Just had a few days at this wonderful rural find to celebrate new year. This is our second time we have stayed here and still fantastic. Rooms are boutique, clean and comfortable.we have stayed in rooms 1&2 (There are only three) Staff are lovely and helpful. Breakfast with plenty to choose from and the cooked breakfast is a plate full. Ate here in the evenings with a good selection of pub grub and all choices very tasty. This location is perfect for us as very rural and walking routes literally from the doorstep. Owners are really helpful and add to the experience of staying or dining here …very welcoming and friendly. No problem filling up flasks with coffee and water ahead of walking days Will be back definitely

Mediocre food, expensively priced. Not what we were expecting from a country pub. If you really must eat here, avoid the fish and chips - fish tasted as if it had gone off. Dessert was ok and some of the locals were friendly.

Just back from another weekend away at this lovely traditional country pub. Owners and staff very welcoming. Booked room 3 this time, smaller than room one but cosy, warm, and clean. Bed very comfy, everything needed is in the room. Food superb, plenty of it and always hot both breakfast and evening meals. Definately will be returning when warmer so we can use he lovely garden and take in the amazing views. Thank you.

Bolton Arms Our party of four, including my adult son and his wife, made a reservation for 6:30pm, having read the numerous positive reviews for the restaurant. Arriving at 6:36 with a friendly smile, we informed the proprietor at the bar that we had a reservation. She inquired of the name and time, and after receiving the details, delivered such an unexpected reaction we were at a loss to know whether it was to be taken seriously or not. Turning around to look at the clock and seeing it confirmed a late arrival of no less than 6 minutes, she then shook her head and tutted at us, audibly, as if my family and I were naughty school children rather than paying customers. Assuming it could only be a joke, we immediately asked if there was something wrong, to which no reply was given, and the lady's disposition remained decidedly unamused. We looked at each other briefly before asking to be shown to our table, to which she replied that we were to sit down in the common area until we had made our food order and only then could we be escorted to our reserved table. We were literally in a state of shock at such a frosty and bizarre reception. After giving our order to the waitress, we waited for the promised escort to the table. Even after waiting a further 5 minutes, our patience was not rewarded and despite having the proprietor in view, she occupied herself with paperwork at the bar, basically ignoring us until we had no alternative but to go over and specifically ask to be taken to our table. If we hadn't, it's a mystery how long we would have been left to wait! We had ordered the "crispy duck confit with honey and orange sauce" and "homemade Indian chicken curry". The duck was absolutely not "confit", it was simply baked in the oven at some time and then reheated for us until dried out. The sauce was basically warmed up marmalade, overloaded with sugar. The plate itself contained so little, it almost seemed like another unintentional joke. A dish of boiled peas, broccoli and carrots was put in the centre for us to serve ourselves. The "homemade" curry was likewise anything but "homemade". Nobody came to ask if we needed any drinks or if the meal was ok, as they did at adjacent tables. For some unknown reason, we were being made to feel wholly unwelcome and unwanted. We decided to leave as soon as we'd had enough of our disappointing meals. Paying at the bar the lady finally asked if the meals were ok. We replied that they weren't, stating the duck was dry and the sauce was overpoweringly sweet. She replied that it was a "marmalade sauce" so it's supposed to be sweet. Of course, it was clearly marmalade, but that wasn't what was advertised on the menu. She didn’t want to hear the truth. We left the pub with a bitter taste in our mouth despite the coating of the sugary "marmalade sauce" on our teeth or the salty tongue of the impudent proprietor.

Warm and friendly welcome, good choice on the menu and a specials board. Four starters, four main courses all different all first class. Been to many restaurants around the area this one's the best upto now.

Dinner, bed and breakfast. Really boutique feel to the rooms. Great attention to detail. Really clean and well presented. The food was lovely. Well cooked and a really great choice of fresh produce. The team were so lovely too. Would absolutely definitely stay there again.

The barmaid was so rude we felt our dinner booking was an inconvenience to her. She was more concerned with the contents of her mobile phone and didn’t even lift her head up from it when we entered the pub nor did she greet us. It was such a bad experience I felt the need to write this review. On a lighter note the food was okay and the young waitresses bringing the food out were a pleasure.

We just had an overnight stay in this lovely pub,with another couple of friends ,we hadn’t seen for a couple of years. We stayed in room 2 with a lovely clean comfy bed,slept like a log!We all had the evening meal,rather a long wait,boy,was it worth it.I thought I had a good appetite but my meal would have been enough for 3! Tasty and cooked to perfection,oh,and the beer was good too. All in all, an enjoyable experience Thankyou to the really friendly staff.

Consistently good food, we met friends for a birthday celebration and, as ever, were not disappointed. Friendly service, great views if you are lucky enough to visit on a sunny day. Outside or inside the staff are welcoming and attentive. Lots of choice for everyone - but being a fish lover their Haddock and Prawn Crumble is the best!

Sadly we were very disappointed in the quality of the food we had. I had the pork belly for starter which was very tasteless. I had the fish crumble for my main which again was very tasteless … my husband had the pork which was just a giant slab of pork on his plate.. again tasteless . The chips were nice though …

We visited for lunch on a grey Thursday, and were warmly welcomed. We sat in the garden, listening to the birds and enjoying the views. The ducks in the next field, and a visiting stoat were entertaining! I had the most delicious steak pie - the meat melted in my mouth, and there was plenty of it. My husband had the pork, which he said was also delicious. The service was prompt and really good - even though we were outside the waitresses still checked we had everything we needed. We will definitely be going back again.

After a long drive returning from Alston to our home in Skipton we planned to stop at a certain pub. Sadly on arrival it did not live up its billing and certainly was not somewhere we would stopSo faced with this dilemma and realising many places would be fully booked we thought best to get back near home and hopefully find a supermarket for ready mealI realised that we would be passing the Bolton Arms and having stopped there a couple of times for a drink decided to see if we could get a tableThe young staff could not have been more helpful and whilst they apologised for the table being next to the bar for us it was perfect in the centre of thins rather than on the edgeThe menu whilst not extensive was very well thought out offering pub classics and something along the lines of fine dining in fact something for everyoneWe had the pie which with some well chosen and cooked vegetables was excellent. For pudding although nearly full from the pie we opted to share the sticky toffee pudding an inspired choice as it was nearly a complete meal on its ownThus from a near disaster to a great meal we left very pleased knowing we would return

I have eaten at The Bolton Arms on a number of occasions over the years and have always enjoyed their food; for the rest of my family this was their first visit. We ate in the airy conservatory and service was friendly and prompt. Our prawn cocktail and pork belly starters were good. Responses to the main courses however were mixed. The salmon, lamb and steak and kidney were successes, but the cod was overcooked and the chips not the best. Similarly the desserts though plentiful in amount were slightly short on quality. Past experiences have been better, but we were generally happy overall.

Stopped here for one night the staff were very friendly, such a homely place with fantastic homemade food. Room was a lot better than I expected, for such an old building the rooms are modern with a powerful shower. Would highly recommend

First came years ago for a night away. Loved the food, the atmosphere and the lovely location. Came a while later...still loved it. So when we were able to at last have a night away we came to the Bolton Arms and...we still love it. The rooms have been upgraded to a fabulous standard, the staff still as friendly and the food just as delicious. The breakfast is outstanding so for all you who want a nice night away in the lovely Dales this is your place.

We (a group of four) were in soon after lockdown lifted in July, walking coast-to-coast. We had walked about 20 miles to get there which tends to give you an appetite but.... wow. Well presented, every mouthful absolutely delicious. We also stayed, and thoroughly enjoyed that too (especially the hot bath!). If and when we do the walk again, this is #1 on our list of venues we want to make sure we can fit into the schedule! Did I mention the food was delicious? :-)

The staff are welcoming and the food was great and well cooked and presented. The social distancing rulles work and you are made to feel safe. This delightful pub is close to the superb Swaledale

Drove past a sign for The Bolton Arms on the way back from Richmond. After looking at it on the web booked a table for lunch. 2 of us had fish and chips(home made chips not frozen) and 1 had the shoulder of lamb. What can I say the meals were outstanding and the service excellent.Glorious views from the pub and beer garden. Very friendly staff and a beautiful clean pub. We will definitely be going back to eat and drink again. A great find. Would highly recommend.

We visited last night and had a wonderful time. We are still isolating quite strictly so chose to sit outside. The tables are at a good distance and we happened to be the only people in the garden. There is another outdoor seating option at the front. We only had to enter briefly to pay by card. The view from the garden is stunning with no obstructions. All of the staff were lovely and checked on us to ensure that we didn’t need anything etc. several times, even though we were out of the way and there were lots of people to serve inside. We had a selection of the starters and the pie, chicken escalope and beef burger. The food was delicious and the starters came with lovely warm bread. We would each recommend our meal and the starters were all perfect. The visit was a very welcome first meal out ‘post’-COVID and we feel confident to go back again soon and enjoy more of the menu - we struggled to narrow down our choices in one visit! Thank you to the front of house and waitresses for your attentiveness and for not making us feel awkward about being so cautious :)

Ordered a take away lunch ,tired of cooking at home ,in lockdown, Super Quality Sunday Dinner , just as good as usual eat in quality .All the trimmings ,good portions and even still hot when we got home.Give yourselves a break order for next week !

We went to the Bolton Arms for lunch last week with our family. We booked a table for 12 o’clock so I think we were the first to arrive as the pub was very quiet. The lady who took our order wasn’t welcoming or friendly and a smile and a hello would have been welcome.. When she brought the food one member of our party was busy with one of her children so she just put her plate of food on the next table and walked away. No offer to take it away and keep it hot for her. We all enjoyed our food in this lovely little pub but as other reviewers have said, a smile goes a long way, perhaps she does not enjoy her job?

My husband and I went for dinner last night.Food was very good. I can recommend the goats cheese salad and the crispy duck. The Bolton Arms, in my view, offers above average pub grub, presented beautifully and good tasting thought out dishes. Seafood pancake was excellent, as was the lamb. Recommend you visit!! Do book, it was extremely busy, but a very effective and efficient friendly team work hard to ensure you are looked after. Thank you for a lovely birthday meal. See you again soon.

I've eaten here lots over the years so when back in the area for work The Bolton Arms was a natural place for me to book to stay. I was not disappointed. Comfortable room, good food, helpful and friendly owners and staff. Accomodation is perfect for couples or small families. An ideal base for exploring Swaledale or Wensleydale. I'll definately be back again soon. Try the Guineafoul; its brilliant.

A family run local pub / restaurant. Such a friendly place to go, everyone says hello and is happy to chat about your trip or local goings on. The food was amazing, Duck cooked to perfection, my companion had the boar which was just as good!! Good selection of Wines, beers, spirits. Could not fault the service, polite and clearly very well trained. I would be cautious of travelling here in bad or winter weather, especially if you have mobility problems, Yorkshire is just naturally hilly but can not say a bad word.

Visited here with friends who have been before. They raved about it so we visited with them. Staff very friendly on arrival. Lots of dishes to choose from. Friendly little bar area and good to catch up with our friends before food was ready. We got shown to our table in the lovely conservatory area. Our food came out and it was all gorgeous and well presented. Piping hot and proper chips! Good sized platefuls but still managed deserts. Again these were really tasty with options for everyone. Waitresses were very friendly and chatty and actually seemed to care. On leaving we checked out the little lamb in the field next door who came over to great us - so cute!! Great experience and will visit again.

Beautiful relaxing afternoon, in a pub obviously frequented by the locals giving a lovely friendly atmosphere. Despite being extremely busy inside and out in the beer garden foodservice was good.

Wow... had a lovely night at the Bolton Arms this week. There were four of us and we all ordered Rib Eye Steaks, my mouth is watering just thinking about them. Cooked to perfection medium rare, the steak melted in your mouth. Three of us had desserts Sticky toffee puddings and forest fruits Eton Mess. My husband had a cheese board... it was superb. Service was great, food was hot and so tasty. We will definitely be returning

Visited with friends. Had table in conservatory with lovely view. Friendly staff and efficient service. We all enjoyed our food very much. Clearly fresh and home made - two of us had fish and seafood - also very fresh. Husbands had lamb and steak. Both very pleased with their choice. Will try Sunday lunch next time we visit.

I have known about this pub for years but never had a meal. We went here tonight via a gift for christmas. I wish now that we had gone before as the food was great.

We benefitted from a Burgoyne Hotel mistake – having booked a dinner to celebrate my wife’s birthday by email on 13 April 2018 we were informed by Nigel the night before that the hotel didn’t do dinner in the 1735 restaurant on 30 December 2018 as it was Sunday!!!! – But then it was still a Sunday when it was booked in April and why wait until the night before????– Therefore we had to make alternative arrangements…..

Having ordered well in advance from the menu for New Year's Eve we were quite disappointed with the quality of the food and very disappointed by the service.

We pre ordered our new years meal about a month in advance and were looking forward to the night in general. When we arrived we were welcomed by the most amazing staff. When our food arrived we were all stunned at how amazing it was, both in appearance and taste. For desert we decided to share a cheeseboard between us all. The staff were amazing and I found out that the waitresses were local girls, which gave a nice sense of community spirit about the whole place, and they clearly were trained well as their whole demeanour was fantastic. All in all a fabulous night, fabulous food and fabulous staff. We will certainly be returning.

Contrary to the review before. The service was great, not great in a yes so no sir three bags full sir, great in the sense that it was a warm family atmosphere.

We enjoyed our food which was well cooked and well presented. The location is lovely and the interior attractive and welcoming with a log fire burning in the bar area. However, when we arrived the landlady was on the phone. After several minutes she beckoned us, and another customer, to the bar and took our orders for food and drink, and even poured our drinks, whilst she was still on the phone. Being a little hard of hearing I really didn't know whether she was talking to me or into her phone. I may be old-fashioned but I just do not consider this acceptable.

My friend and I very much enjoyed our Sunday lunch last, so friendly to us. We booked in advance and I explained that my friend would like to have chicken, (it wasn't on the Sunday lunch menu). No problem was the reply. On arrival i mentioned this. Not long after our roast dinner arrived. Hot, home made Yorkshire pudding, selection of fresh veg, roast and new potatoes. Very nice experience. I was to full for a sweet but my friend had a home made bonoffe pudding. All in all a fantastic meal. Thank you.

Always good food, beer and a friendly welcome. You can dine in the pub area or in the conservatory restaurant for superb views.

Over the last ten years almost all rural inns appear to have taken on one of two identities.

Pleasant staff with good service, starters were delicious followed by acceptable main courses. Unfortunately, the tables were quite close together and two couples were discussing rather loudly their rabbit hunting stories with tales of their dogs savaging rabbits and hearing their bones crunch. Not the pub's fault but we decided not to stay for dessert. Will try again another night.

Thought we'd give Steak Night a go as had been recommended. Almost half my steak was gristle and poorly cooked. Yes this steak is cheaper on the Steak Night but it was so obviously cheap poor quality meat and dreadful so it wouldn't make me come back and pay full price!!

What a fantastic gem of a pub. As it was steak night, we had the steak and it was superb. All the staff were so friendly. And our waitress was very efficient and a pleasure to speak to. We found out she was the landladies daughter. She’s a credit to you!! If you visit the area then you’d be mad not to pay a visit to the Bolton Arms.

We have a house locally and had heard good reviews.

This pub is set in beautiful countryside, has very friendly staff (except one). To be honest my only criticisms were the surly waitress and the lack of vegetables. I don't understand why this is a common theme in pubs; vegetables are not that expensive and are not difficult to cook. Having said all that we will definitely visit again.

Was expecting more. Had to order from the bar as no menus and felt uncomfortable staring over people in front of the blackboard who were eating. The service wasn't great. Slapped the change down in front of us. Food was okay but wouldn't return.
