Like many bars it's not quite the same after lock down. Prices are getting silly. Choice and quality of ale is poor, Bridge Hotel get better beers in. Open understaffed. Some staff not cellar trained Not a penny of investment in maintenance of this pub in over 20 years

Stunning pub in a historic location. The old domed skylights and wooden booths give the place real character. It, feels like stepping into history. A lovely selection of real ales and ciders are reasonable prices. Bar woman when we were in was lovely, happy to talk about the history of the pub and about the ales on cask. Very quiet on a Sunday night.

Unfortunately I have found the service here very poor for quite a while, not just recently, but a steady decline for the last few years. This edited review is based on my last visit here and I can't possibly leave a higher score than one star as I didn't actually buy a drink. In the 20 minutes I stood in the queue last Sunday the queue barely moved - apart from when thirsty would-be punters walked out to go somewhere else. We have drank here on a match day for well over 15 years and the service now is as bad as I've ever known, which is a real shame as it has been a cracking boozer over the years and still can be. The bar is severely understaffed on a match day now and those who are serving are doing so very slowly. I understand the establishment had a change of ownership a while back which has had a detrimental effect i am sorry to say. There is no excuse for not being able to cope with the demand on a match day as that demand is totally and utterly expected.

Nice enough pub. Large and spacious. I rarely criticise staff but instead of serving customers waiting the staff stood talking. Slowest service for two drinks ever and only one other customer waiting to be served and he was there before me. It was the male member of staff who basically ignored customers and would not stop talking to the other employee when I eventually got served

Out with a few work friends as I was up visiting, and they know a love a good pub and some fine ale. 'You must come to the Bodega' they said, and I wasn't going to refuse. Walk through the doors on a fine fronted and good old fashioned pub, and what greets me, but the most amazing glass dome and fantastic architecture I've seen in a while. The owners have resisted the fashion of 'Starbucking' the joine in favour of retaining that lovely character, and I'm in full agreement. A great ale selection, and a lovely patient lady behind the bar ready to serve. Fair enough, it wasn't busy at this point as it was just before 5, but coralling 5 people, of whom 3 are enjoying the wow factor of that entryway is probably quite tiresome after the first few hundred times! It's a proper old boozer, with loads of wood panelling and beatiful decor. Lots of nooks and crannies to hide away with your pint after a hard day's work. We played darts. The house set aren't the best, but they never are, are they? What I really like about this place, though, is its potential for being a true Winchester in the zombie apocalypse. As long as there's no access to that dome up top, then you're in for a safe 'lock-in' here whilst you sit back and wait for it all to blow over! If I'm in Newcastle when that kicks off, I'll be knocking on that door in the hope of shelter!

I will not pretend to be a reguler of this pub although I have spent may happy times there even when it was the three bulls (a long time ago). This includes being there when the pub was ram packed before and after NUFC home games and whilst it is clearly slower to get served on such days the service was always quite efficient. Today was completely different, although the pub was very busy but not as busy as I have seen it in the past, I waited without moving in the queue at the bar for some 20 minutes. In the end I decided to leave and go somewhere else. The inability of the staff today to cope with this predictable busy period meant that my trade was lost and that given the fact that it was taking so long to get served the pubs takings today would have been no where near as great as they could have been. In short the service was nowhere as good as it was under the previous owners. So all in all very disappointing.

Fantastic selection of ales, all kept to perfection. Great atmosphere especially during the football season for pre and post match beers. Away fans welcome. Update after 5 years. I have been drinking here for many years as a SJF pub but, following the removal of covid restrictions the bar reopened under new ownership. (Not SJF). The place still gets full but people are leaving to go elsewhere. Very poor and slow service from the new staff. Beers not kept as good as they should.( I've had to return several as undrinkable). What a shame as this pub used to be one of the best places for a drink pre and post football match. The website still shows as being SJF but it's not. 4 stars removed for this new regime.

We had an early morning flight just before Christmas, so we thought we would have a nice breakfast before the flight. I really don’t know how you can mess up a cooked breakfast!! We found a table, that had drink stains all over it I had to ask the lad to clean the table which he did with no urgency or elbow grease, I wanted to do it myself. The breakfast arrived the bacon was that cremated we had to pick it up to eat, I didn’t want to take someone’s eye out that brittle, the eggs were sunny side up and all runny round the yolk not cooked properly. The prices that you charge would have expected something a tad better. I was not impressed at all!! I have had a catering business for several years and I would never serve something I wouldn’t eat myself. If you would like me to come in and show how to cook for the great British public, just give me the nod and I would do it free of charge. The staff are very pleasant, the only good thing about the place
