First time in this place and will be the last. I have a disabled sister who can not walk or talk and has tendencies to drink cups of tea (to stay happy) unfortunately this two minute probably even one minute job was to much on that day for the staff. (Wasn’t busy) They sarcastically with a smile declined to pour some hot water for a young disabled girl, one guy was willing to but this horrible woman told him not to. Although we had around 15 people who had just ordered drinks. One drink and we was gone. Place is very run down and isn’t clean. Needs a full refurb and a full change of owners/staff.

What more could you need, a pub next to the river and a nature reserve! I have been coming here for 11 years, when I moved to the area. I have feel now the menu is the best it’s ever been- so varied. Ranging from classics like scampi, lasagne, hunters chicken to name but a few - to nachos, jackets, burgers, sandwiches, pizzas and specials! To which we’ve had most of. Never can fault it! Today we had cheeseburger, peri peri burger, chicken Yorkshire pudding wrap and chicken strips and chips - it was faultless! Always accommodating and staff are great and it’s why we come back time and time again.

The pub is in a strange place , we stumbled on it looking for the ferryboat inn ( dont ask ) . Seen as we were there we decided to give the place a go , friendly bar staff and average drink prices . We ordered some food and was pleasantly suprised at the home cooked quality of it . In this day and age you kinda expect a pub to be tied to a chain of somewhat and with that comes microwaved meals . Not at the Boat Inn , lovely home cooked food and daytime meal deals to cater for those on a budget . A lovely beer garden ( size of a football pitch) a definate must for summer time next to the canal . Give it a go , worth a visit .

Foods nice enough and cheap enough, pizzas are very good, fair pub grub, drinks are a bit on the expensive side. Some of the bar staff are a bit rude, ignore you when they can see you are waiting to be served and look you up & down (oh im sorry is my hard earned money not good enough for you), not seen any service with a smile, at least smile when you take my money. Could be brilliant with not much effort. Large garden to the rear or the riverbank to the front are nice places to be in good weather, dont think I would bother eating in the bar or restaurant area.

We decided to visit here for something to eat for lunch. We arrived and the atmosphere wasn't friendly. We got looked up and down as we entered. We asked if they were doing food and they pointed at menus on a table. We sat in the room to the left which was dark and looked old.We ordered at the bar and they gave us a wooden spoon with a number on it. The food came and the girl dumped it on the table. Didn't ask if needed anything else. I had to go look for condiments. No one came to see if the food was OK. Poor customer service grotty eating area. Felt uncomfortable will not go back again.

Not sure what has happened...usually a good pub serving food...the whole place was dirty, plenty of staff just stood about, tables needed clearing. They can only cook one pizza at a time (although broken so no pizzas at all). Toilets filthy with no toilet rolls. Wish we’d have stayed at The Victoria.

Just been to the boat and ate a fair meal. Made a mistake when leaving through the beer garden door. The patio area was covered in cigarette buts and there were two piles of sick one of them right at the gate. I would presume both of the above was from the night before? Owners/managers need to get your act together and clean up the pub inside and out before opening up to the paying public. Disgusting

We were travelling home from our holiday and dropped in for meal meeting up with a relative who lived close by to the Boat Inn. Unlike some reviewers we found the place clean as was the table the five of us sat at. Though the arrival of our meals was staggered we all enjoyed our food, I had ordered the steak and ale pie on special. I thought it was excellent and the gravy up there with the best. Perhaps we were fortunate in eating at lunchtime but can only write as we find.

Pedí hablar con el gerente ya que la comida estaba anunciado hasta las 8 de la tarde (este debería ser el momento en que se aceptan pedidos de última! ). On arrival we asked if they're serving food and the guy pointed towards some steps, no more said. The menu has a nice selection of food and the prices were reasonable but this is where the good bits end. 1 kids sausage and mash, gravy like piss water, mash potato extremely lumpy. A pulled pork baguette, containing huge amounts of burnt meat with extra sauce as an attempt to cover. A beef and onion baguette, average. A 'Tuna melt', containing half a kilogram of cheese and hardly any tuna. Overall, food was very poor. The toilets did not flush and were very unhygienic. Overall experience was dreadful will definitely not return and will go to Samuel valentines in future.

There are two tripadvisor entries for this pub. My review is copied from the other.Popped in at 12 on a Sunday lunchtime after a walk along the embankment. A lot of garbage strewn through the beer garden (after what looks like a busy Saturday night) made us decide to eat inside. Inside on first inspection seems much cleaner. Friendly bar staff took our drinks order from a good selection of beers. Chose a table in the conservatory area but where but were put off by the dry rot on the wall. Sat at table 8 instead. The important bit: We ordered two burgers (Hawaiian and Stacked). Both were hot, juicy and cooked to perfection and came with crispy and tasty fries. Waiting staff member was very friendly. What concerned us was the state of cleanliness and repair of the restaurant. Our table was very sticky (I believe we were probably the first cover at that table since the night before). If it had been cleaned then the cleaning fluid residue was still present. If it hadn't been cleaned then I guess we have more to worry about. The area smelt quite strongly of drip tray. As an indicator of possible lack of attention to detail; the light fitting of approx 15 bulbs above us had only 1 working bulb. All things considered our impressions are of 1. A bar and kitchen staff who prepare food and drink very well and with fast and friendly service that WILL bring us back soon and 2. A management with little or no attention to quality control in terms of routine cleaning best practice and site maintenance. I'm genuinely looking forward to sampling the food and drink again and hope that inroads will have been made to these important experiential dining qualities. Visited July 2016

Been here on many occasions in the past and although the food is cheap and cheerful it's usually been fine. Went on Saturday 7th may 16 was a quick visit as we were on our way elsewhere, myself and my partner ordered a couple of pizzas as they are homemade. The service was quick within 15 minutes for myself but my partners food took another five minutes. I thought when you order together you ate together! The pizzas were awful too much tomato purée and not a lot of care the paste was so strong we were unable to eat it. Our drinks came in dirty glasses covered in lipstick and my partners Guinness, the head was brown not good at all.Overall the pub is run down, it needs decorating and someone who takes pride in the place, the manager wearing trackies says it all, from what we witnessed the guy is not bothered and the staff probably know that so their not bothered either. Five staff including the manager behind that tiny bar and nobody wants to do any work. It was like a children's playground so unprofessional! Will we be visiting again? NO!! Until I hear good reports about the pub this is the place to avoid.

We have had a few hit and miss meals at the boat but haven't been in over a year.I must admit we really enjoyed the food on this visit. Homemade burgers all round and they were so so nice as you will see from the picture. Homemade coleslaw as well 1 stacker (double) burger, 1 Texan burger, 2 kids meals. 2 pints and 2 kids drinks for £30. Same price as a hungry horse for example but food was so much better. The setting is also brilliant. Situated by the canal with a secure playground at the back. We had dinner and drinks with friends & family.I was able to reserve a table nearest the back garden by telephone which is great as we had young children with us.The quality of the food we received was of good standard, no microwaved veg etc etc. They cooked a chicken breast for my Sunday lunch on request as I do not eat red meat which is great as some pubs will not do this. Ok, where do I start. Firstly after a long dog walk I went in to purchase a couple of pints for me and the wife before ordering some meals. I asked the Barman to give me a couple of minutes whilst we decided what food we wanted then he could add the drinks to the bill. He asked for my card to which I replied "don't you trust me" and he said well basically no. so I gave him my card and he then put it in the till until I returned with my order. I said I did not want my card leaving in the till as this was actually not the correct procedure (as well as being illegal) and I then asked him where the lock was for the safe keeping of the cards. He hadn't got a clue what I was talking about so I then went on to explain how normal restaurants keep your card safe, unfortunately the restaurant did not have these facilities so I just paid for the drinks by card. (This would now actually cost the restaurant more as they would now have 2 transactions which costs them more!!). We then ordered our food which was 2 starters of Chicken Goujons and a main of Steak and Ale pie and Creamy mash and sausage with peas. When ordering I asked for the pie to come with Chips instead of Creamy mash and Veg but I was charged for an "upgrade" because I ordered chips. I asked why was this the case and he replied because you have upgraded to chips so I asked if i was still paying for the creamy mash and veg to which he replied yes. I then asked him "well seeing as I am paying for the creamy mash and veg then can you please put it on a separate plate" his response was we can't do that. We then spent a further 5 minutes explaining why would a portion of chips be more expensive than replacing Mash and Veg and the principal of taking something off the meal should mean its actually cheaper not more expensive. By this time the guy was flustered and huffing and puffing quite a lot and just kept referring that the system wouldn't allow him to do it. In the end he put it through as normal and walked in to tell the Chef to put chips on instead of mash and veg which begs the question why didn't he just do this in the first place to save all of that hassle!!When the waiter came out to deliver our starters he asked us how we were (he clearly had already known about the issue at the bar earlier) to which we replied well we are ok now after the trouble earlier, however he clearly was not bothered in the slightest. (why ask the question if your not interested in the answer?).When we got our food we were bitterly disappointed, we received 3 chicken Goujons on a plate with a little salad and a massive pot of Garlic Mayo which took up a third of the plate. The Goujons were just clearly frozen and deep fried however they were edible. The mains were delivered and again we were disappointed. The steak and ale pie was a small 2" x3" slice of pie (bit like a school dinner slice) which was microwaved ( the clearest sign of this is the soggy pastry) and a generous portion of Frozen chips and a small jug of gravy. If I had of known I was going to get a plate of crappy frozen chips after the earlier issue in the bar I wouldn't have bothered. we also got a plate of 3 sausages which were again microwaved but pre cooked ( again a clear sign of this is the anaemic colour, texture and heat) and the Lumpiest mash I have ever had at any eating establishment, oh and some bullet garden peas. Where they get "Creamy Mash" from is beyond me, in fact I would say no other product had been put into the mash whatsoever so how the hell it could be classed as creamy is beyond me. Some of the lumps in the mash was actually hard and inedible. One good point was the gravy, clearly taken from meat juices and very tasty. At no point during or after our meal was we asked how the meal was which was a shame because I would have loved to see the reaction of the Kids who were running the place. And there I think lies the problem, cheap waiter/Barman/chef labour. No experience in Customer service or how to deal with certain circumstances which is a shame because this place could be a little Goldmine. Great Location good views but sadly lacking in the things that matter. I did think of phoning the owner before this review however they would probably think I just wanted my money back and that's not what I wanted to achieve, people need to know what the place is like. Rant over now!!!

We live a stones throw away from The Boat but we haven't eaten there since the last change of owner/manager (2nd day open and no chicken items on the menu were available). The food we ordered was tasty but very basic (disappointingly so...). Steak and ale pie was a "slab" of pastry with the appropriate filling but looked similar to an "old school" serving. Toad in the hole was simply a (shop bought, maybe!) giant yorkshire pud with 3 sausages and gravy, not the toads expected enveloped in a fresh made pudding and the cheese and tomato baguette was simply that... cold and unadventurous! The menu has a wide and varied choice and is most definitely not going to hurt the wallet too much but the presentation of the food needs to be better for The Boat to be regarded as a dining experience to remember. The tables in the dining area felt sticky as the varnish is peeling away ant the walls were a little tired in a few areas. Such a shame as this pub has a fantastic location alongside the river with ample parking and a huge beer garden.I am a firm supporter of local businesses and would love this to be a regular evening out. With a little TLC, a lick of paint (inside and out) and attention to detail and flair on the food side, this could easily become a polished gem of a pub!

Didn't know anything about the Boat inn as we were passing on the River Aire and it just happened to be lunchtime. The mooring was a bit tricky to use first time due to its height but I will know how to handle it next time. Not expecting much given the price (quite a few mains available for 2 for £12) I was delighted with what we were served. Big enough portion, homemade and in the case of my meal the vegetables were perfectly cooked. The total came to less than £20 for 2 mains and 2 pints of lager. On the basis of what we found we will definately be returning next time we are coming up the river Aire.

i lived in Allerton Bywater for 15 years and always loved the location of The Boat. It has had several owners over the years but, for me at least, they have all struggled to serve good quality food.We were there yesterday lunchtime to celebrate our grandson's 5th birthday. It was an informal gathering of around twenty adults and children, some eating, some not. We hadn't booked tables but staff seemed concerned and insisted on knowing how many we were expecting! My husband ordered sausage and mash which came with bullet-like peas and mash. I asked for a small Sunday lunch as I have a small appetite. Yes, it was a small portion but it was crammed onto a small oval plate and I really struggled a) to see what was on the plate and b) to actually eat the meal without it spilling off the ridiculously under-sized plate. The food here isn't overly expensive but I'm afraid the poor quality means that it isn't good value for money. We may call back here sometime for a drink as they have a good selection of hand pulled beers. However, we won't be eating here again.

As a group of friends, we visit The Boat every 2wks on Sunday's. The service here has just got worse over the past few months. We arrived this Sunday and on placing our food order, was told there would be a 40min wait. Although we thought this was excessive we decided to wait while we sat and chatted. The actual wait time was 1hr30 mins when half the food came out. We had finished eating ours before the other 3 got theirs. The food wasn't up to their usual standard or quantity by any stretch of imagination. We asked to see the Manager but was told he was unavailable. We were however, given a full refund with a complimentary drink as compensation. Ours wasn't the only complaint that day as we heard a lot of customers complaining and also walking out. The staff are really cheerful and do try to help, especially Katie and Lauren but the Management need to pull their socks up or it will close again as customers look further afield to eat out. It would be a shame as this is a lovely pub at the side of the canal where walkers, boaters, bikers, families and friends can sit in the countryside. While writing I would also like to say about the state of some of the table tops inside. They need a good scrubbing down to get rid of whatever is caking on the surface. You can scratch it off its so thick.

Mind you, the youngest being 14 and the eldest being 22, can we still call them kids??The food is good, honest pub grub. Easy on the pocket and very filling. We all have good appetites and we never fail to leave here stuffed!!We cant understand why there are so few diners there during the day. The Landlord is always friendly and comes to do a table-check to make sure the food is ok. One of the kids had an all day breakfast the other day and we asked if he could have fried bread too as it didnt come with it. This was no problem and he enjoyed every bite.My other son had a roast beef baguette and chips with gravy. We were all fighting over the last drops of gravy. It was stunning!!One stacker burger and wedges and a scampi and chips and we were done. Not to mention the sharing bowl of nachos the kids had to start. Loads of guacamole and cream cheese!!No doubt we will be back there in the next week or so. :)

We last called in to the Boat a long time ago. It was dated and dingy and not very nice food. Had heard from people it had changed hands and was a nice country pub, decided to walk from Castleford over the fields to get some exercise and call in for a bit of lunch. It looked fresh and inviting. The menu had lots of reasonable choices, from starter, mains to light bites etc. Some specials on such as 2for£12, or less.We had fish and scampi, both came with gorgeous chips, done with skin on and lovely and crisp. The fish was freshly battered. The scampi was good and well cooked. Then had treacle sponge and custard. 2 portions for a fiver! Was lovely and light, not at all stodgy and the custard was creamy.A drink each and it all came to about £20! And the portions were lovely and plentiful. Infact, due to full tums, the walk back to Castleford took ALOT longer!Excellent and we will be taking the kids on Sat. A nice walk followed by some nice food.

The peas were not nice the colour looked like they had been boiling for a week. Roasts tasty would of liked another one on my plate. Only one thing I must say is the mash disgusting there not real potatoes (smash or some kind) Please please sort your peas and mash out, just a let down. We will return again just hope you change these itemsKeep improving this great pub

Called for family meal. Great pub and gardens but...... Pub grub but not at its finest. Bland menu, processed frozen food. overcooked.Really lets the place down. Chef, gain some inspiration and use fresh seasonal products, The location of the place would ensure a great business on the kitchen side if the menu suited the great look of the place.Dark entrance to toilets, couldn't find the door! And table 30 thick with grease.....next time I am in the area i will use the sandwich shop round the corner.

Came here on Sunday for a drink and for the kids to have a run around and it's so much better than it was. We last came before it closed and it was horrendous, dirty, horrible outside with hardly any seats. Vast improvement, lovely inside and lots of new seating outside. The kids had some food, sausage and chips and burger and chips which looked really good and were polished off. Very basic menu but good value and now a pleasant environment to spend a few hours. We'll definitely be back

This has been our local for years and really went downhill. Since it has been re-vamped it back to it's best. Food is basic but cheap (you get what you pay for) cannot go wrong with the 2 meals for £10.00. The beer garden is great for families.

Not what it used to be for food unfortunately. New menu and at a guess new kitchen staff. or more likely a lack of dedicated skilled kitchen staff. So in short, it's gone downhill and needs pulling back. Still nice for a drink though

Spent 3 nights drinking and dining here whilst visiting our son in the village. A pub with a good atmosphere friendly staff and nicely upgraded surroundings. There is a spacious well equipped outside dining area with slides for the children and its setting by the edge of the canal is great. The food is typical pub food and the two for a tenner offers good value for money. Kids meals are less than £3 each too. The local hand pulled beers included Hobgoblin Black sheep and Silverking were the highlight of my husbands visit and all were served in good condition! If I had to be critical, there is a shortage of staff and often you wait for 10 minutes to get served. There needs to be someone to clean and tidy the outside areas as dirty pots and glasses remain on tables for hours which spoil the setting. Staff do not seem to be able to clear tables and they deliver food in total ignorance of clearing dirty tables returning to the kitchen empty handed. We saw and abundance of glasses left on walls and floors which in turn are dangerous. On Friday they were asking people to accept beer and wine in plastic containers despite there being a garden full of dirty glasses. A shame as this really spoils the ambiance.

We ordered our food we was told there was a hour wait with them been very busy. We didn't mind as we was told before we ordered at least you know it's fresh and not just warmed up in a microwave. Excellent food very tasty my hubbie had steak he likes it med/ rare. I had the burger.

Decided to give this place a try been reading the reviews there mixed. Got a warm welcome young lad served us we had to tell him 3 times our drink order. After we decided what everyone wanted we placed our order we was told there was a delay on food. 1 hour 10 minutes later our food came out all hot and freshly made. I can say it was worth the wait. Friendly young girl brought our food and asked if everything was alright. It's a shame we had to wait that long for our food, maybe more staff or bigger grill would help.

Sun was out and I right fancied a pint, so we took the kids to the boat. The beer is kept very well and you always get a good pint. We decided to have some food so we ordered the burgers and scampi. We were told that because it was very busy we would have to wait over 45 mins which we didn't mind. After 50 mins the food was out, freshly cooked and very tasty. Only negative was the peas. Good service by our waitress called Katy and Lucie behind the bar

Not my first visit and not my first bad service at the bar.Has the art of scanning the customers at the bar whilst pulling a pint gone? The only way you get served in this bar is to stand next to the person being served when you get to the bar. The bar person (and I mean all of them) have no idea about working a bar. How hard is it to look who is at the bar waiting as you pull a pint? In this pub it's very hard as even if you have been waiting patiently some one can just walk to the bar and stand next to the person being served and they will be the next person served. This is so frustrating and one way of causing trouble between bar staff/customers. Its not hard.....train the bar staff please.

I don't always believe the dreadful reviews I read on here so I decided to treat the family to a meal out and make my own mind up. Really wish I had paid heed to some of the reviews on here and not wasted my money. The bill for 4 was £25 so okay - not mega bucks but a total waste as none of us ate all our meals and left hungry. I had scampi with home made chips. The chips were overdone and a bit soggy, 5 pieces of frozen scampi and tinned peas which were lukewarm. My husband had burger which he said had no flavour and was dry as a bone. My daughter had the surf and turf with chunky undercooked oven chips. Her steak had a dreadful blue cheese taste - probably mould? So we told the waitress (when we found one as the staff were very thin on the ground!) 'Oh' she said. No apology or offer of a refund. My grandsons childs meal of fish fingers, beans and chips was okay but macdonald type chips were really undercooked and he didn't eat one. The restaurant service was dreadful. Tables were sticky and unclean. The bar area is pleasant and a good size beer garden although the roundabout in the children's play area has seen better days with seats missing and sharp metal edges. This could be a gem of a place being in a beautiful location and the only eatery in the village and it is so sad that you cannot get a decent simple meal. How simple food can be so dreadfully cooked is really beyond me. We have eaten here previously and been disappointed before so we will not be returning or recommending this place to anyone unless some serious changes are made with the food.

We live in the village and would love this pub to be great. Sadly, on the half dozen chances we've given it (each time rumors of a new chef) we've been so disappointed. We went as a family ranging from 2 to 55 and none of us finished our meals. The steak in the Surf and Turf tasted of mould. That would have been lovely if it was a blue cheese but not for a plain steak. The burger I had came with soggy sad chips and a so so salad. The bun was dry but not as dry as the burger in it. Maybe that's a ploy to sell more beer? Speaking of beer, these are kept to a good standard and we've never had an issue with those. Back to the food; tinned peas are never really welcome and the scampi one of us had probably was ok at some time but not at the table. It too was soggy and tepid. Problem being, when you've paid up front, there's no recourse other than to complain, which we did. No joy though and barely any interest. We won't be going back until we see consistent 4 star averages on here. It might not cost a fortune but if relate cost to edible portions, as a ratio, it's extortionate.

Pre booked a table for 10 for a family get together for a Friday night after hearing good reports so we were looking forward to our meal. We had to hand over a credit card which didn't seem to secured and very well looked after , we were sat within view of the bar and hardly likely to leave without paying . It wasn't handed back after the bill was settled by another member of our party..We were informed there was a 40 minute wait on food and didn't mind as we hoped it meant it was all freshly prepared and cooked. We were disappointed..The food was below average and and poor value only 5 pieces of scampi for £7.25 with over half a plate of cold tinned peas. Very poor and not very good value. We passed this on to the waitress but heard nothing more. The burger was overcooked and under seasoned with the home made chips nothing special. A lot of our party didn't enjoy their meals we... couldn't wait to leave .The toilets were dirty, no lock on one if the ladies doors, no toilet roll at all and broken seat in the disabled. Informed staff no toilet roll and given roll from behind the bar to walk across the restaurant myself...!!! Really...Totally unacceptable and embarrassing. No apologies, will not be returning. AVOID...

Having been a couple of weeks ago and had a pleasant meal, we called again last night and what a let Down. Ordered the burger with chilli sauce again, this was very bland, no flavour. My daughter had the smothered chicken, this was described as chicken breast, with bacon and melted cheese. The cheese was in fact a square cheese slice.....really!! I did tell the waitress how bad the food was when she cleared the table and she did apologise. We were not the only diners who left unhappy.Having enjoyed our first visit, we were certainly disappointed last night and not be hurrying back!

I've eaten at the Boat Inn many times but never thought to post a review until now for some strange reason. The food has always been good but last night it was particularly good and the service was exceptional, as all the staff were extremely attentive and pleasant. At busy times in the past we have had to wait far longer than is reasonable but last night it was moderately busy but we were still served very quickly. The menu is also a little different to the average pub, so that gives it a bit of an edge. I'll certainly be going again and I'd recommend it to you all.

Went today for a few light nibbles for lunch on a lovely hot day. Our eldest child was thrilled with the playground and we were quite content with our drinks sat on a bench in the lovely quiet surroundings. My partner went to order 4 starters... 2 of which were "out of stock because of a late delivery" due that day. So our nachos had no sour cream and were cold, chicken goujons seemed half cooked, chicken wings were probably from the night before and chips were greasy and very sad looking! I could have put on a better spread with my eyes closed. Safe to say we will only be returning for drinks and a nice beer garden. ..not disastrous food :(

Chose to visit due to the excellent reviews on trip advisor. The positives are that it's a lovely pub in a fantastic setting - I imagine it will do a roaring trade in summer. We ordered haddock and chips, surf and turf and scampi and chips. Food was promptly brought to the table on warm plates which is good. However, the haddock which was a miniscule portion was erring towards burnt (both dark brown)as were the handful of chips, the peas were like bullets, no tartare sauce was provided and the salad garnish was too plenitful, which I thought was odd to serve with fish & chips, and was probably so large as to make the portion seem larger than it was. The food had that taste where the oil needed changing. My husband had the surf and turf, the chips were a different to mine not overdone but not handmade, again too much salad and rock hard peas. My son had the scampi which was soggy, bullet peas, too much salad and overdone chips. Given the previous reviews I'm not sure if the chef was having an off day, but we won't be returning.

We visited the Boat based purely on Trip Advisor reviews and we enjoyed a pleasant, if unremarkable, lunch. The menu is pretty extensive and offers really good value; portion sizes are generous and the service was efficient and welcoming.I imagine that The Boat will be extremely busy through the Summer given its location alongside the river, it's good selection of beers and the 'hearty' food on offer. We will return with the warmer weather and look forward to another pleasant experience.

We discovered this only because of Tripadvisor - and we are glad that we did.Wonderful location on the banks of the River Aire and delightful even in the depths of winter. Look out of the window and not another building in sight.Beautifully redecorated and spotlessly clean.Excellent welcome. The food was excellently cooked and the steak is particularly good value for money. When we visited is was a new chef's first day and service was slow. But if this is typical of his cooking, then it will be very well worth a return visit.

We sometimes pop in for a drink when walking along the river as it was always dog friendly - not sure if that is still the case. Wanted somewhere for lunch with a friend that was close and it seemed to fit the bill. I used the voucher which ~I got from their facebook page. I had messed up printing the voucher but the staff were very nice and accepted it anyway. The new decoration is nice - it still feels like a local pub but it is nicely freshened up. I'm not sure I'd want to take a muddy dog in there on those nice new carpets! The restaurant was very quiet so we picked where we wanted to sit. We ordered the 2 for £5 starters and a burger each. I ordered at the bar as specified, and was a bit taken aback to be asked for a card for security - I suppose they wouldn't do it if it wasn't a necessity but it does jar a bit in a nice friendly pub atmosphere. Service was friendly without being obtrusive throughout, staff were really nice. When our starters arrived they were a little bit small - at £2.50 each I wouldn't be fussed, but at full price I would have been. 4 garlic mushrooms and 3 breaded prawns! They were very fresh and tasty though, and there was plenty of fresh salad with them. The burgers were absolutely fabulous though - well seasoned and meaty, full of flavour. We had a bacon and cheese burger and chilli cheese burger to share and they were equally delicious. The chips have been praised in other reviews and I can see why - they were absolutely perfect. Again lots of nice fresh salad with them. The only thing they could improve would be the buns - the burgers were so meaty and juicy that the buns completely disintegrated. We were too full for pudding, but the menu looked great.I would definitely go back, especially if it is still dog friendly. The food is reasonably priced and good quality.

We visited on the 22nd December (mum's birthday party) and it was superb. The staff are friendly and the whole set up is very child friendly (good for us as we had 4 in tow!!). I had the burger and it was huge! The homemade chips to accompany it were also excellent. One of the kids had fish fingers and chips; this was actually a lovely piece of battered fish (rather than the usual frozen offering in family pubs!). The beer was also really really good and moreover the Boat is exceptional value for money. Highly recommended and we will be back very soon! One bit of feedback - it is best off serving the kids as quickly as possible (and before the adults if you can, it makes it a bit easier to keep the kids occupied and allows the adults to enjoy themselves more!). Kids also tend to like their food a little cooler so best off serving their food on colder plates...maybe get some kids style plates??

Very overpriced, slow service and got my order wrong even tho I repeated it 3 times. Should of had a panini and got a toastie, had to pay 3.25 for some chips to go with my " panini" and for that you basically get a handful of frozen fries. Wont be going back again!

We used to love this cafe together with a great, well stocked garden centre. Fabulous cakes, buns and meals and we've never had a problem. However, our visit during the first week in Jan 24 was an eye opener. I gave my cup back because it was dirty so was given a clean one. Both teapots were stained outside even though we only got hot water to put our specialty tea bags in. When we used some of the milk we found the inside of the jug was covered in black mould spots. The person I spoke to and showed the jug to just shrugged her shoulders and said everything goes through the dishwasher. Funnily enough my review on Google has been taken down as have the pictures of the filthy crockery.
