A lovely restaurant and bar serving freshly home cooked food. Portion sizes are good and the food was excellent. My wife is very fussy about her steak pies but loved the one she got here. I had scampi and it was good as well. The decor and surroundings don't scream "modern" but that is part of the charm. A warm welcome from the hosts (and the locals) in what clealy is a well loved community hub. The prices are very reasonable and while it's not the most extensive of menus you should be able to find something you like.

Whilst staying in Kirkcolm we popped in for fish and chips. The landlord is very welcoming and his wife is a wonderful cook. This is a traditional pub which if you hanker after memories of what a pub used to be like before Wetherspoons took over the world you will not be disappointed.

What a fantastic welcome from the min we walked in x we were greeted with such a friendly smile and were seen to immediately x we were shown to the back where there was a beautiful welcoming garden, drinks were served within minutes x the owner wasn't shy and spoke to us as of he knew us forever, conversation was easy 😀 We placed our food order, we were already told it would be 30 minutes but we were happy to wait, we weren't in a rush at all x my gosh those 30 minutes were WELL WORTH the wait.. the food is to die for, ive never seen a pie 🥧that size before and such reasonable prices x Such a shame we had to leave and just wished there was room to stay, we will 100% be back again and hopefully have a room at this fantastic and beautiful building x ❤ Thank you for your hospitality x

I decided a few weeks ago to book a hotel for the night in Stranraer for my family before our ferry to Ireland as the 3 1/2hr Saturday morning drive from Cumbria may’ve been a little tight. Booking.com came up with this little number just outside the town. We arrived a little later than expected at around 7.45pm with a board saying outside they serve food til 8pm. The landlord was very friendly and happily accommodating as he stressed that not only he caters for guests through the week but to all visitors to the village. The food was amazing - the lasagne that I saw people previously giving a high reputation was the best one I’ve had and my wife said that her fish and chips were really light. I booked two rooms with one to house our two and three year-old daughters for the night and the landlord happily put our rooms side by side. The rooms were really comfortable and I liked how they were updated in decor but maintain the historic structure of the building. Plenty of hot water for a shower. The girls loved their stay and their food and so did we - the plentiful breakfast set us up nicely for the lunchtime ferry crossing followed by a four hour drive. If we ever visit the South West Scotland area again, this would be a place I would return to!

Had brilliant fish and chips here, incredibly cheap. Had to sit in the bar as we had our dog with us and the surroundings were not inspiring. Very friendly landlord. A short menu of homemade food but only served Friday & Saturday evening.

Nice friendly welcoming pub with a good selection of home cooked food. The lasagne was one of the best I have had. We were a party of 7 and all clean plates. Food is served only at weekends (thurs to Sunday I think) but after our first visit the landlord and his wife offered to cook for us on a Tuesday so we could join in the quiz. Would recommend

Sadly food is served only Thursday to Saturday evenings at present, which is a shame because the food is excellent. Fish and chips are the best in the Stranraer area.

We recently went to the Blue Peter with friends for an evening meal. Alan made us feel very welcome, including the dog. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Fish and Chips with mushy peas are fabulous. Real ales fantastic. A great pub and well worth a visit.

So, the blue Peter doesn't look much, but step inside! The bar is old fashioned and interesting, loads of trinkets and history of the landlord's and the pub's life! Beer changes regularly, reivers IPA went down well! Good kids menu, usual pub offering but nothing wrong with that! Haddock and chips was excellent, Cumberland sausage in Yorkshire was huge with thick gravy, chicken curry was nice, steak with peppercorn sauce was nice! Staff were great, friendly and kind and we will back!

I popped in for a bite and an ale. Food is home-cooked and is average really, veg was over-cooked and bland, gravy is a mix and the potatoes come in scoops like at school. The pub itself is quaint but feels dated. Does it need to change? probably not as it has the feel of pubs that no longer exist and I think it's better for that. Would it do good trade if it became boutique? probably it may. Kirkcolm and the surrounding area in a way is a hidden gem and still needs discovering, when it becomes mostly holiday homes I would fear for pubs like the Blue Peter. The landlord seems like a nice guy and he is definitely trying to maintain a sense of community through his pub.

We ate an evening meal here on Saturday 26 July after having driven nearly 500 miles from our home in south-east England to our holiday cottage which was nearby. We ordered hot cooked food for a family of five, at about 5.30pm, and waited about 30 minutes for it to arrive. The portions were generous and the quality of the meals was good. Service was with a smile, but the place was rather quiet. The décor was pleasant, but the atmosphere was rather flat - not helped by the intermittent rain outside. The meals were reasonably priced and the prices of the drinks not unreasonable. Overall, it was a good choice in the circumstances.

Upon checking website noticed service closed at 6:00 on Sunday so rushed to ensure arrive in time. Upon arrival well within time, were advised service finished at 5:00. Spoke with barman who initially said kitchen was open however after ordering drinks told no food was available. Told him website information and board outside pub timescales and all he said that he would need to change this! No apology so we left without eating and despite previous visits being satisfactory, we will not return.

We looked on trip advisor and found this was local to us we were staying in a farmhouse. We arrived after booking a table at 1.30 but were told there were no Sunday lunches left but was only 1 other table in when we arrived!! We ordered a variety of meals which took over an hour to come and we were the only table in! The meals were home cooked but were of a poor standard with bisto instant mix gravy for one meals chicken. Not a great place to eat and the service was poor! Wouldn't recommend glad it's only a small place as it's got its work cut out in future.

We were staying in a holiday cottage on the nearby estate and had heard very good reports, so decided to make a visit. As it turned out, we turned up on the off chance and were welcomed and with a bit of organising were able to be accommodated. The food was excellent. All home made and cooked to perfection. Fish and Chips were brilliant. Waitress who served us was ever so polite and friendly. All food and drink it has to be said was excellent value for money. My only do different would be to keep the pump clips on the bar up to date. ie only show those that are serving. I suspect there may have been a wider selection of ales in the bar rather than the lounge, but in fairness I should have asked! A great meal though. Very friendly. If we come back to this area, we'll definitely be back!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

The Blue Peter Hotel in the wee village of Kirkcolm, south west Scotland is a hidden, almost, gem. The new owners, Alan and Jackie, took over in December 2012 and have put a new menu in place. I've tried the Lancashire hotpot, very good and the fish and chips, excellent. You have to wait a little longer than usual but that's because all the food is home made and cooked, no bought in food at all. The fish is fresh, moist and tasty with crunchy batter and the chips, well freshly peeled and fried delicious. Most places get either the fish or the chips right but rarely are both cooked to perfection. Washed down with an excellent real ale in front of an open fire, what more could one ask for? The only down side is with the food being fresh they can sell out quickly.Bed and breakfast also available and should you take advantage of a stay there's an abundance of wildlife on the doorstep, literally, you may even spot red squirrels in the garden.
